Azzo had walked the entire city looking for him. Stopping at what was rumored to be the place of residence of a certain knight. He looked up at the building eyes half lidded and Snowball on his shoulder. Merlin was also by his side. Slowly Azzo knocked on the door unsure what to expect.
How long had it been since he was in the city? It seemed like yesterday they were celebrating his and Aurora's wedding. His eyes dropped with a sad sigh he stood there waiting. To see who would answer the door, Azzo hoped it was who he was looking for.
Granted the young man looked almost unrecognizable with the tattered clothing and startings of a beard. The black cat resting on the dog's back also wasn't recognizable as any mauvian that was known and he planned to keep it that way. "Don't say anything until we're sure it's who I'm looking for." He warned Snowball and even then, he hoped the cat wouldn't speak.

The knock came without any warning, and Finn's heart began to race. He'd schooled practically everyone on the shibboleth, and there was no way he'd missed it - his signet would have gotten the message no matter what. That someone was knocking with no advance notice... perhaps it was an emergency, or an oversight, or much, much worse: a raid. Fearing who might be waiting for him, Finn raised the cover off the peephole and looked carefully out into the alley. Recognizing the man on the other side, he breathed a sigh of relief - it had been a long time since he'd seen him, but his identity was clear. The unchanged glamour came as a reassurance: Azzo had not corrupted. He opened the door, just a crack, with the chain still on. After all, he'd skipped the shibboleth. "Hey, man," he said, peering out. "Long time, no see. You missed a security check, so, like, I hope you don't mind if I keep the chain on until you give me a reason to let you in. Times are tough."

Azzo looked at the door as it opened slowly and he dead panned. What did Babylon mean he missed a security check? The man stood there for a second before pulling out a pen, unsure of what it looked like. "Polaris." His voice cracked and looked at Snowball for help.Snowball looked around carefully before clearing his throat. "Sorry Finn, Azzo's a little .... shooken up. Found 'em a few nights ago back in the city. He won't tell me what happened but I think... Polaris is..... well...." The Cat sighed and dropped his head, "That's her pen."Azzo looked up at Finn having somehow pulled out a little composure he didn't want to be standing outside forever. He figured either the man would turn him away or something not just talk through the crack of the door. "What sort of proof do you need. I'm not powering up standing out here. I don't care if there is a cat." He sounded somewhat angry as he made the comment. He was sure Finn had good reasons, but times like this and having to gone through the trouble find the man and no one told him of the damn security checks?Snowball looked shocked at the sudden anger, which was one of the first emotions besides a hallow shell that Azzo had exhibited since he'd found him. "Christ cut the man some slack Azzo. It's been horrid here. . ."

Finn nodded and hurried to undo the chain. He flung the door open and ushered Azzo, the cat, and the dog inside, locking the door tightly behind them. "s**t," he said, eying the pen in the other man's hand. A senshi, separated from her pen, well - there weren't a lot of things you could read into that. "Azzo, man," he said awkwardly. "I'm sorry. I am so, so sorry." "It's no powers in the house, anyway," he added, gesturing for them to come upstairs with him. He'd - he'd put on some tea, he thought, and make Azzo take a shower and shave, and- It was sort of silly, grasping for normalcy when this was anything but. He kept up Kaatje's rules partially out of respect for the dead, but also because they were common sense. The shibboleth, two lines of call and response, those were his own addition, but look where that had gotten him, pissing off an old ally. "Can I get you anything to eat or drink?" he asked, waving them all into the apartment he kept for himself. "I think I've got some dog food here somewhere." Well, he knew he did - he kept it for Mendel - but Mistral's position was perilous without him blabbing that she was a deep-cover spy to half the faction. "And then we can get to what brings you to my doorstep."

Azzo watched as Finn seemed to realize the weight of the situtation and ushered the gaggly trio inside and watching as he locked the door behind. He looked around at the apartment building softly. "Really someone could've had the decency to warn me about the protocols. I would've rang first had I known." Of course he fell silent as he followed Finn and Snowball filled the gap."I'd appreciate some milk or a cheese sandwich." Snowball admitted, "Digging scraps from the trash is only so satisfying. If I'd known you were here sooner I'd join." He paused and looked at Azzo, "I think he needs something substantial food wise and a drink on the rocks. However, I don't think he'll take either without being able to work it off."
Snowball had hopped up on Merlin's back, "Yeah Merlin would probably also appreciate some food. I can only do so much for getting us food but I think I've done pretty well getting the dog fish sandwiches and other foods."
The cat paused, "He's a little less picky than I am."

"Yeah, well," shrugged Finn, putting on a fresh pot of coffee. "No harm no foul. It's just a call and response to let me know you're coming and so I can tell you the way's clear. But I don't expect anyone terrible to be running around with your face." He took a few minutes to get the animals all appointed to - kibble for Merlin, cream for Snowball - and put some soup on the stove for Azzo. The other man had a powerful scent. "Do you want, like, a shower or something?" he asked. "There are laundry machines in the basement and I can lend you some clean stuff." It was nice to have someone in the building who needed his help again. After Kaatje's corruption and subsequent death, it had fallen on Finn to stick to their mission statement. Sometimes, that made for lonely work, but he'd spent enough time moping and the soup was ready. "So, do you want to tell me what brings you to my doorstep?" he asked, setting a bowl of chunky beef and vegetable on the bar. "Hell, I can't even remember when the last time I saw you was."

Snowball pranced at Finn's feet waiting for the knight to give him the cream. When he received his treat he began lapping it up and purring happily, "This. . . is. . . the. . . best . . ." He said between laps. Finally something that wasn't garbage.Azzo sat there looking at Finn when he offered use of the shower. "In a little while maybe." He was seated arms crossed watching the other man work. He seemed, different than before he disappeared there was something off about the man who appeared broken at Finn's doorstep.
He looked at the soup when it was done and set in front of him. "I felt like you needed to know. . ." He answered watching the steam rise off the soup. Really he was trying not to just jump into that bowl and eat the whole thing in a few spoons. He was trying to give it time to cool and he was leaving a pregnant silence in the room.
"The last time you saw me was my wedding day or a few days after before the honeymoon." He finally answered before picking up the spoon and stirring the soup taking a small taste and feeling the hot liquid run down into his stomach which growled. Maybe he shouldn't've hobo'd it so long. . .

"Yeah, our little slice of paradise," said Finn, giving Snowball a scratch behind the ears. Straightening, he nodded to Azzo. "Yeah, I remember that much," he said. He just didn't see how Azzo and Aurora went from being the happiest couple he knew to Azzo, homeless, and holding a henshin pen. Like, obviously he could extrapolate - but they hadn't even been in Destiny City, had they? "You were in Alaska, yeah?" he asked, pouring two mugs of coffee. "You want milk? Sugar?" He dressed up the cups, then set one out for Azzo beside his soup. "I was there for a while - Fairbanks. It's a nice place." But it was no place for a knight. Time didn't stop back in Destiny City just because you were away from it. "s**t, that was years ago. Anyway. I'm not gonna pry, I just want to know what I can do for you."

Snowball purred again and leaned into the scratches. "Azzo, I think you need to start the story from the beginning. I'm not sure he's met my Senshi. . . My Princess." Snowball added finally looking up from the bowl when it was almost empty.
Giving the knight a serious look before going to finish the bowl and lick it dry."Yes, I was in an Alaska." He answered as he glanced at the coffee, "Both, two spoons of sugar."
Azzo paused when Snowball suggested he start art the beginning and not just the end. The man closed his eyes as he thought before taking another sip of the soup giving the liquid time to settle before digging into the meat and vegetables.
"So you remember Aurora from my wedding? Apparently, I missed the fact I needed to introduce you guys from the start as she was fairly important; like Snowball mentioned she was his senshi and a princess." Azzo swallowed pausing as he spoke to see if he could figure out how he really wanted to explain this. "She was my guiding star really, Aurora pulled me out of some of my darkest times when I didn't think I would be able to be happy again."
He paused, "Years ago, I don't even remember how long now, there was an organ ring, it was covered as this thing called Barren Pines. I had woken up from there with little to no memories of the years I spent there. A few broken bones, and the feeling of being lost without a compass. That sort of hopelessness will drive you to ends you never want to meet. Aurora pulled me out of that, and eventually I learned she was actually Polaris one of the senshi that constantly looked out for me before I was a knight and didn't make me feel like I shouldn't be out trying to help them and understand what was going on."
Azzo paused to take a few more bites of soup. "Well fast forward to when we got married. As you know the honeymoon was in Alaska but something strange started happening. I noticed there were Youma cropping up, where normally there wasn't. So we ended up having to run from our hotel."
He paused, "Both of us tried to fight off the youma the best we could but we ended up out numbered and had to find a way to flee away from the area. I don't know how they got there or why but it seemed like the whole world was falling apart around us. Then just when I thought we found some place safe. . ." He sighed and looked at her pen which he'd actually sat on the table not far away from his hand.
"I don't know what's happening. There's a lot going on everything pointed back here. While she's no longer here with us, I had to come back to the beginning and see what was happening." Azzo was being vague again not outright speaking the words she's dead. . . However, why else would one carry around a senshi's henshin pen? Snowball was now sitting facing Azzo staring at him as if he wasn't understanding some part of what Azzo was saying.
"Actually, I haven't returned home since I got here. It's hopefully untouched, I want to go board it up at least."

Finn nodded. He'd heard snippets about Barren Pines over the years from Elke and Laney - Elke had given him the whole story, about it being a Negaverse operation, but Azzo didn't need to know that on top of everything else he was dealing with. The guy had had his world turned upside down enough times for a lifetime. And god, he missed Elke. "The youma upwellings are everywhere," he said, cupping his hands around his mug. He'd heard about Vindemiatrix's death third-hand, and even though whatever they'd had was long behind him, it had still hurt. You couldn't save everyone. Some days, you could barely save yourself. And you couldn't stay in Alaska (real, metaphorical, whatever) forever. "I'm really sorry all that happened to you." But, moving on. "I think your house'll be fine," he said. "The Negaverse isn't interested in destroying the city outright." If anything, property damage had been collectively reduced since their takeover. Which made sense: no one wanted to rule rubble. Leaning back against the counter, he asked, "How much contact have you had with the resistance?" Obviously enough to find this place, he thought. "Everyone's gone to ground or settled outside the city. If you want to head out to Headquarters, you can stay here and I'll call someone to come take you."

"We managed to find enough to get here. I think I ended up doing most of the searching since I can still track youmas and what not. A little easier but still had to be careful in case someone was following or watching. Or in case they'd turned." Snowball answered and glanced over to Merlin who was sniffing for the few kibbles he'd managed to get on the floor and then once satisfied finally flopped down on the floor happily.
"I'm guessing you're comfortable there Merlin?" The cat asked and received a snort from the dog. "I'll take that as a yes."Azzo took a sip of the coffee, "Yeah I've had a little, it's difficult I've been trying to figure out who's with us and who's not. Like Ana." He paused, "Since she's working for them. I assumed maybe they'd find the message faster. I know at one point Polaris-- Aurora I mean, was probably big on their hunted list since she was a princess."
He yawned a little as he thought about the mention of outside the city. "Funny, she offered me a pass to the outside asking if I'd considered taking a hike." Azzo shrugged as thought about this possibility, "I suppose it couldn't hurt to see what's going on, get caught up, and get my bearings it's really changed around here."
He stopped and shook his head, "I knew things were bad when youma started popping up else where but I didn't know it was this bad. I just hope my parents and Aurora's parents are safe." There was only so much he could do to protect everyone and he was doing his best to try and draw attention where he wanted it to go. He picked up Aurora's pen and slid it back into the pocket he had it in before working to finish his soup.
"So how are you doing Finn? I know it can't be easy having to hole up here."

"Ana... you mean Anabel?" asked Finn, eyes knitting together with concern. Mistral had always been regarded with suspicion by the rest of their faction - it was what made her position as a double agent so believable. Still, if Niflhel had spoken to her since returning to town, there was no telling what he thought of her position. It was essential that Mistral remain in deep, deep cover - if she were found out, the Negaverse would not try to convert her. She was transcendent, and that would lead right to the executioner's blade. "Everyone still in the city has their own cover to worry about. The cowards have mostly turned traitor already, but everyone else - we have to hold our cards close to our chests. People will be more willing to talk if you get out of town," said Finn, and took a long sip from his coffee mug. "I can call someone to come collect you tonight, or I can take you tomorrow. I have some supplies to run out and could use an extra set of hands." Casting Snowball a sidelong glance, Finn added, "And, you know, cats are something of a limited resource. They'll be overjoyed to see you." He looked down at his hands wrapped around his mug. On his right ring finger, he still wore his knightly signet. On his left, he wore a wedding band, and he self-consciously looked to see if Azzo still wore his after all the bullshit that had rained down on him. "It's lonely," he said measuredly. "I miss my family. I sent my mother and my sister out of town and I'm not sure where they are right now." He could only hope they were safe - they both had knightly blood, but had no powers of their own. He was awkwardly reminded of his observation years ago that his family tree had been systematically pruned, century after century. "Avalon and I have a daughter," Finn continued, trying to cheer himself up. "Antonia. She just turned three a few weeks ago."

Azzo nodded, "Yes Anabel, seems she's doing well for herself. I just hope she knows what she's doing on their side." He sighed softly worried for the girl, "I hate to think we lost such a valuable resource." If he suspected anything other he didn't say much, "Though I'm glad she appears to be safe."
"I can see that, it's why I figured walking around like a homeless person would keep attention away from, and dying snowball. . . well he was here too long by himself." Azzo looked over towards snowball, "We left him here to keep searching for Polaris knights and to keep them safe but it seems like the problems here have kept many from awakening."
Azzo still had both rings he nodded, "At least they're safe." He said as he waited, pausing when Finn said he had a daughter. He found himself biting his lower lip inside a little bit as he thought about the twins but smiled anyways, "I'm glad, I'm sure she's just precious. Aurora was excited about the idea of having kids. I kept saying we should wait until . . . the end of the war."Snowball's tail flickered, as he listened. Ears perked up, "I've done my best as it was to keep eyes on our senshi that were left." He yawned and stretched out moving over to Merlin who was already asleep and curled up beside the dog. "Finn do you any vanilla scented shampoo? Or something orange? I'd appreciate a bath too, this dye's been itching my fur."

"When did you see her?" asked Finn. It wasn't public knowledge that he was in regular contact with her, and he'd like to keep it that way. He sometimes wondered where people thought her technological innovations were coming from, if Mistral had truly turned traitor. Perhaps they chalked it up to the cats. "You might find some of Polaris's knights with the resistance," said Finn, although he wasn't perfectly sure. He knew he'd seen at least one on a report of losses to corruption - but it was better if Azzo not know that. Much longer, and it would be too late to call someone to take him out of the city tonight - and if both Snowball and Azzo wanted showers, then they'd be better off waiting for tomorrow. He made an executive decision. "I'll take you to camp tomorrow." Finn smiled self-consciously. "She's a delight," he said. "And to be perfectly honest with you, I wanted to wait, too. But she happened and some things are just meant to be. Gather ye rosebuds while ye may and all that." Antonia had been conceived against all odds and precautions, but Arkady had been too excited at the prospect of a baby for him to go against her. It would have been cruel - and in wartime, sometimes you needed a concrete bit of happiness to fight for. "I've just got whatever's in the bathroom," he said to the cat, pointing to an open door with a hint of tile beyond. "There should be an assortment. Check under the sink." Not that he had any idea how a cat would shampoo its own fur, but Mauvians were weird, and significantly more dextrous than ordinary felines. "So the dog," he said, nodding to Merlin, "Is just an ordinary bog-standard dog?" He was pretty sure Mistral had done some sort of mad science to Mendel. But not absolutely certain.

"A couple of nights ago. I told her I had some business to attend to in town and then I might take her up on that hike. Though . . . To be honest I wasn't sure if it really a safe hike or . . . well something else." He pondered softly, "I'm tempted to trust her, Snowball still does. . . for some reason. If she's with them I'm sure she has good reasons. I'm just glad she's alive."
Azzo nodded as Finn talked about the resistance and then mentioning he'd take them to camp tomorrow. "That's fine, at least I've got somewhere dry to stay if you'll allow it."
He did actually want a shower, "I bet she's got her father's looks." He seemed to warm at the thought, "Yeah, Aurora wanted lots of kids. . ." There was a sigh, "Yes, yes; very wise Mr. Keating." Azzo motioned as he looked towards snowball who seemed to want an actual bath. "You always hated when Aurora bathed you." He pointed out.
Azzo stopped and glanced sidelong at Merlin. "Yeah he's just a German Shepard, usually pretty good judge of people. Snowball's been trying to train him to distinguish order from chaos, It seems a little successful. . . unless Snowball's just training him to not like people he doesn't like." Both could be possibilities."Well I never asked you to help." Snowball said as he got up and headed towards the bathroom. "Not that I know how I'm going to shower myself but, I didn't ask you to help." His tail flickered as it disappeared into the bathroom to see what there was to be had. He really hoped it was something that smelled nice.
"Besides I only hated when Aurora bathed me without bathing herself toooo." Apparently the cat was trying to push buttons on that one, because as far as Azzo was aware that never happened. It still earned the cat a questionable gaze and frown from the man.
