It was only once there was some distance between them and the park that ********* even dared to speak. It wasn't difficult to tell that Irene was shaken up by the whole experience. In all honesty, the manx was a bit shaken up as well. Quenton's actions were extreme and left the Mauvian wondering about his actual goals as a senshi.
There had been doubts about the chances for success for this sort of attempt, but that didn't make it any less disappointing. Glancing up to the senshi who held her, the manx softly asked "How are you holding up, Irene?"

It was hard to say if Irene was holding up at all. ********* could probably feel her shaking as she walked, taking a winding route to avoid being followed back to Ellie's house. She was trying very hard not to think about what had just happened, and doing badly. The images flickered through her head- disappointed faces, a glint of silver, a blinding light-
She turned her head away, even though she knew there was nothing there, and scratched ********* ears absently. This was the time to say something. To assure the guardian that she was okay, that they would make it through this. But she wasn't sure that was true, and she knew her voice would betray that no matter what words she came up with.
"Why?" Yep, squeaky voice, trying not to crack. And the one word she'd come up with wasn't particularly inspiring. But it summed up her confusion, and so she repeated it. "Why?"

It was sometimes the simplest question which was the most difficult to answer. Leaning her head against the girl's gloves, she reminded her "...don't forget to power down once we are safe..."
It wasn't an answer to her question, and ********* knew that. She wasn't shunning the question, but it took more thought to keep the answer somewhat intelligent.
"...it means that it wasn't the correct solution." That was the logical response which was offered first. "Many of us went in knowing that this was a possibility, but we still put our faith into Iris' crystal. It doesn't make anything less disappointing."
With a deep breath, she closed her eyes, briefly picturing Quenton's actions with dealing with Bischofite.
"...people deal with their disappointments in different ways. Some will ponder the deeper meanings. Some will shed tears, releasing the sorrow from their eyes. Some will resort to anger and violence... punch the nearest wall and act on stupid impulses..."
The manx cat paused before adding. "I truly don't know the whys to all of this...but it is important to try and keep a clear head about the situation... otherwise worse tragedies could arise..."

Irene didn't really want to power down. Not when she felt vulnerable and scared. At least when she was a senshi, she could feel Chaos when it approached her. But the person who had frightened her most that night hadn't had an aura of any kind. Even her slightly enhanced speed and strength couldn't protect her from a desperate man with a knife, if he decided to turn his blade on her.
That wasn't her real concern, but it was almost comforting to be distracted by personal anxiety. It kept her from thinking too much about the people she was truly worried about. Ida, and that knight. Where had they disappeared to? Ellie was probably still unconscious, and would be for some time. And that poor man. What would he do now that his chance at freedom had been snatched away?
She could feel the tears start to come, and tried her best to blink them away as she let her henshin fall. "Is his situation bad enough that death is better?" Lydia asked, her voice still weak and wavery. "Is there nothing that can be done?"

Once the glamor had faded and Irene was left as Lydia, the cat shifted so that she pet the girl's arm. It was a sort of role reversal for a cat to be petting a human, but it was necessary at this point.
"...I can't answer that one, unfortunately. I do not know what his full situation entails. We can continue to try and figure out a solution if he does decide to blame the condition he is in now upon an ambush... I do not imagine his situation being ideal right now... but I do not know if death would ultimately be the best solution..."
Still stroking Lydia's arm with her little feline arm, ********* asked "...do you think you'll be able to handle giving the report, or do you want me to deliver the information?"

If ********* didn't have the answers, who did? Did anyone? Lydia was so used to problems that had concrete solutions that when she ran into one that didn't, she wasn't sure how to handle it. No amount of research or questioning would tell her what she wanted to know. And now that she was thinking about it, other concerns began popping up.
"If he tells others it was an ambush, will that make enemies of those who might have otherwise been willing to listen?" It wasn't something that occurred to her when ********* originally made the suggestion, but only when the topic was brought up again. "I don't want Mister Alois to be punished because it didn't work... but what if we've set ourselves up as the bad guys to them? What will that mean for the future?"
Again, there were no easy answers. Lydia sighed and held ********* closer. As appreciative as she was of the offer, she couldn't, in good conscious, accept. "I need to tell Ellie what happened. But we can do it together. You may need to fill in a few blanks." She hadn't even moved to cover her eyes when the knight had unleashed her magic, which meant that she missed whatever had happened right after that. And she still hadn't fully processed any of it.

********* seemed to consider the question, and with the accompanying jingle of her collar, she shook her head from side to side.
"...I don't think it will harm our goals if anything. The Negaverse already paints the Senshi and other forces of Order as the enemy. If the conditions are as terrible as Psyche or Kairatos had to endure during their time with Chaos... I do not think any proclamations by the Negaverse stating we are the enemies... will truly hold."
Having finished petting the human, she chuckled very faintly. "...Perhaps I am just an optimist like that!"

Part of Lydia wasn't so easily convinced. ********* was smart, and she had tons of connections, but she didn't know everything. She couldn't predict the future. Still, the guardian's words were comforting, and Lydia let herself believe them. It was preferable to despair, and brought a smile to her face for the first time since she'd arrived at the meeting point with her teammates.
"There's nothing wrong with being an optimist," she told *********, turning onto Ellie's street. "It doesn't make you wrong! It just means you can see the good things, instead of only the bad ones." Looking at all the ways things could go wrong helped no one. She would rather be an optimist every day.
Her pace slowed as she got closer to the Spectre home, as she could make out the silhouette of someone sitting outside. If she had been followed, her pursuer wouldn't have been able to beat her there. And they wouldn't be sitting outside, as if waiting for her. So it probably wasn't an ambush, but she still approached cautiously, shifting ********* to one arm so she could grab her henshin pen quickly if she had to.

"I got tacos." Xanthus might not have remembered pre-purification time in which he had met some of Ellie's crowd, but he knew *********, and had to figure she wouldn't have gone far from Ellie's crew, so.. well... hopefully she wasn't trying to mooch from normal humans in which case this would sound like the worlds worst, creepiest pick up line, and he was trying to find ways to clean up tar or similar substances on his cell phone, since the soap at the Taco King hadn't really helped much. "Is he still pissed?"

The manx cat patted Lydia's arm with her paw as they approached the Spectre household. "It's okay... that's Kairatos..."
As they drew closer, the manx wriggled her way out of her girl's arms and onto the ground before going through the rocks near the doorway and pulling out one. Kitty noses were a lot more sensitive to figuring out plastic versus a legitimate rock. Once she had located the fake, she used her paws to attempt to roll it awkwardly over to Lydia.
Xanthus' question was not an easy one to answer, and considering the amount of work it had taken to calm Lydia down thus far, her response was tactical at best.
"...we will report it when we get back inside... with the others..." Things had gotten complicated, and explaining it now would just be confusing.

When the guy on the doorstep held up a bag of tacos rather than a weapon, Lydia relaxed a little. Surely no one would attack her with tacos. Though given some weapons she had seen Negaversers wield, that wasn't a guarantee. She relaxed more when ********* reassured her, and nodded in understanding. Though she had been present for Kairatos' purification, she hadn't seen his other form, since she'd needed to take Ellie home.
And now they were all there, but under far less encouraging circumstances. Lydia sighed and knelt down to take the key out of the fake stone, more than willing to let ********* explain for the moment. She wasn't sure she could go through what had happened more than once.
Once the key was free, she unlocked the door and held it open. "Shall we?"

"Sounds good to me..." Xanthus wasn't sure what else to say on the matter. That he'd go try and catch up to Alois again at some point? He wasn't even sure any of them would want to try again... it wasn't really his call... he didn't have the power to even try. Normally this didn't make him feel useless, but without the ability to even try and back up Ellie... he suspected they all did a little bit. It was a hell of a thing to shoulder on your own, and they couldn't even give her so much as energy. Just protect her while she recovered.

If it were a more normal time of the day, the cat would have had no problem trotting along the house. However, it was the middle of the night and there were two sleeping adults in one of the other rooms. It would have been inconsiderate to go jingling around the household. So instead the manx simply walked carefully in, easily guiding the way to Ellie's room.
Up the stairs and into the room with a door cracked, the cat managed to squirm her way into the proper room.
Who the hell needed covers when you had a mattress to flatten yourself on top of. Ellie was sprawled out, seemingly conked out. However, as she heard the door open, her eyes fluttered open halfway.
"...okay... th'f*ck's up?"

As they moved through the Spectre home, Lydia found herself lagging behind ********* a little bit. Which was fine in its own way, since she knew perfectly well where Ellie's room was. It wasn't as though she would get lost. And she was in no hurry to recount what had just happened, particularly since she didn't fully understand it yet herself. She wasn't sure she ever would.
Even dragging her feet, she still wound up outside her Captain's door, just in time to hear the drowsy question. It was, she thought, now or never. Opening the door further for herself and Kairatos, or whatever his name was in this form, she entered the room and sat on the floor near the head of the bed.
She opened her mouth, but instead of a report, a question came out. "Do you know why it didn't work?" That wasn't what she had planned to say, but it was something that was eating away at her. "I mean, I'm not blaming you- I know you did everything you could! And he seemed committed to it. So then, why? Is there any way to know?"
Instead of being a viable solution, purification was starting to feel like the sort of miracle that only worked when the stars aligned. And when it didn't, attempts to force it only ended in tragedy.

"If it had worked perfectly I would have been blown clear out of my boots in surprise." Kairatos provided, putting the taco bag down near the plump gray-blue cat. "Here you go, fluff-beast."
He shrugged and tucked his hands into his pocket as he straightened up.
"...I'll see if I can catch up to him. If he cools down he might be open to us trying to get some more information... I mean... if he doesn't try and take my face off or something."
He was honestly surprised that Ellie was even awake, given how drained she'd been that he remembered.
"You want me to save you some take out before ********* gets it all, or are you good?"
He left off 'Sparklefists' because she also had fast fists, and if she had energy to be awake he'd be surprised if she didn't also have the energy to fire an alarm clock into his junk.
