A group of senshi had come back from the latest outing looking, to say the least, a little worse for the wear. There were three of them this time, Celsus noted; one had a broken arm that looked as though the arm had been bent backwards; another seemed mostly unhurt, except for the bruising all up and down the side of his face, and the last was unconscious, severe cuts lacing up and down his torso so that blood spilled out onto his uniform in scarlet splotches.

Celsus knelt down in front of the bruised one, frowning slightly. He reached out a hand and touched his fingers to his forehead.

"What happened?" he asked, as a gentle wave of energy flowed from his hand into the senshi, whose shoulders relaxed a little. The senshi took a breath and said roughly, "There was a Negaverse scouting party, just beyond the range where we were hiding out. They saw us, and came after us; buncha bloodthirsty bastards. We only just got away before they harvested us."

He looked angry and tired. Celsus gave a small nod and stood, giving the senshi's shoulder a reassuring squeeze before he made his way across the field, every now and then giving a nod or a smile to those he passed, his cape billowing out behind him.

In the middle of the camp, a man stood, his presence dominating most around him, though unintentionally. Celsus stepped up to him, his expression quite inscrutable, and said in a flat, even tone of voice, "Good afternoon, Prince Castor. Any news?"

Castor's eyes hadn'ty missed the sight of those who'd returned covered in wounds- it was too often that it was happening. To many were going out in teams just to come back as single man units. Some full teams weren't even coming back at all. Most when they came back looked like they had made less progress than anything- but they were alive.

It was more than enough.

His own gloves were bloody and his arms had flecks of brown falling off here and there. his boots had soaked in the blood from where he'd been that day. "The same as usual." He said, looking to Celsus. "Managed to get a captain and their lieutenant. No youma on the north side though- dusted a few on the west edge however." His tiara was dull, as if the energy drain had taken a wear to the very metal.

"The war keeps itself alive and we attempt to survive it." Finally, he sighed, arms crossing. "You'll be getting reports of malnourishment and a higher rate of fatigue soon. They've increased sanctions on the city."

Celsus, like Castor, bore the signs of war; there were bloodstains on the hem of his cape, streaks here and there, but unlike Castor, the remnants were not due to a vicious fight. In fact, they were due entirely to the rounds Celsus made through the camp, healing who he could while he had the energy to do so and helping when able.

"We'll have to send more to the West Edge," Celsus said. "See if we can't extinguish the youma left."

He cast a sideways glance at Castor, eyes raking over his form with a slight frown on his face. The prince was looking somewhat worse for the wear, though he was as stoic and calm as ever. Celsus still did not know much of him, even after all this time, which made it difficult to converse.

"There will have to be more care in how and when food is dispersed to the camps," said Celsus, reaching to run a hand through his hair, which was still vibrantly red and longer now, reaching nearly to his shoulders; though at present it was pulled back away from his face, tied off with a length of cord. "We cannot allow people to go hungry."

There was a pause, and then -

"Did they give any useful information?" he asked, referring to the "captain and their lieutenant" that Castor had spoken of. Celsus' tone was light, but there was an undercurrent to it that suggested a distinct lack of respect for the princes's methods.

"Sorry." He muttered realizing that he probably wasn't being the most hospitable towards the knight. "Just a bit worn." It was a poor excuse for his manners, but it held true- he was worn and it showed. He was either fighting, making the rounds at the camps, or resting while hiding his civilian self from prying eyes.

Elzo had to be dead for Marlo to live in the city. Just until the time was right- if ever.

"Try to see if we can't get something from the outside versus the city itself. I'd rather not have to take to theft from the trucks going into the city, but if it comes to that-" He'd do it. "They listen to healers more than they listen to fighters. Killers." He grined, looking at the man, unashamed and near prideful of that fact.

"Yes actually. They're upping donation requirements. No ideas how it's going to pan out, but we might get an influx of families fleeing with children. My guess is the young will start to be hit harder with the demand strain. It might mean more youma or more officers. Either way we're going to need to be more alert. Any time they gather energy it's nothing good for us."

He shrugged. "What's the moral like post battle? Most of the ones coming back look more worn than normal and i'm starting to worry about their mental states."

The apology surprised him; Celsus shot a wary glance towards the prince, but didn't comment, instead giving a small nod in his direction and letting it go. Times were not easy, but they had never been easy; they could not afford to be spiteful even if they did not always agree.

Celsus idly fiddled with the gold Chronos medallion around his neck, fingers moving restlessly across the smooth surface; a nervous habit he had yet to break. "I'll see if I can contact some of the others," he said, "On the outside, see if they can send someone to the West."

The pride in Castor's voice was irritating; Celsus turned a green-eyed gaze towards him, lips pressed together. "There isn't much we can do about the food situation unless we redirect some of the adult rations to the children, if that is going to be the case. We can't magically make more food appear, as wonderful as that might sound. The children should be kept as safe as possible to prevent anything from happening to them. As for the rest of us...I am sure we should be able to find those willing to bulk up our security; those who travel into the city should also be told to keep on their guard more than they are."

He gave a small sigh, shaking his head. "Morale is low," said Celsus flatly. "It's lower than normal, and normal is already low. I've tried boosting it by encouraging physical activity - endorphins tend to raise stamina and emotions - but a lack of energy and an increase of weariness means that many are just giving up. They see our situation as hopeless."

He shrugged, opting to turn his gaze at a woman who was staring at him. As soon as he did, she shuffled along. You didn't want Castor's attention unless you planned to engage him over something.

"I don't know why I ever expect anything different- but there it is. The news will just make it worse." He looked back to where the injured were being held and reached over to pat Celsus's arm. "Walk with me for a while. I'd rather not have our words heard by those who should not have to hear them."

It was a brisk pace he set, and as he moved people moved out of his way. Castor was used to such treatment, he was used to such reactions. He'd grown to embrace them and life with them.
Once far enough away, and few around them he finally asked- "How many do you think will attempt to take their own lives?"

The difference between Prince Castor and Princess Chronos was so startling that sometimes Celsus wondered at it. He eyed the prince warily, his expression inscrutable, but said nothing as the woman walked past, ducking her head obediently.

"But we can't keep things from them either," said Celsus with a small sigh. "We tell them too much news, morale drops. We keep things from them to spare their feelings, and they accuse us of hiding things because we don't trust them. It's a fine line, one we have yet to find a right balance with."

He fell easily into step beside Castor, his cape fluttering out behind him as he walked, making a slight jingling sound as he did so (he really had to fix that aspect of his uniform). It wasn't until they were out of earshot of most everyone that the prince stopped, and Celsus turned slowly to face him, hands tucked against the small of his back.

"...a few already have," he said heavily, casting a glance back at the people in the camp. "I have heard reports that one or two of the more...wounded ones - whether mentally or physically - have taken it upon themselves to remove themselves from this life, unwilling to spend more time in it. It is...frustrating, as well as tragic."

It wasn't what Castor had wanted to hear, but he'd expected something along those lines.Things were getting worse day by day, and soon enough there would be few of the lower senshi and knights who were able to keep up their guards mentally. Morality and spirit were two things that Chaos did so love to break.

Castor had walked the line long enough to know that the scales very well just might tip for him one day as well.

His eyes followed Celsus's line of sight, noting how they moved. Low, eyes cast down. Life was being drained from them, and it wasn't even feeding Chaos. It was just the spirit of war.

"Thought so." He might have not been the most sensitive senshi, but he did notice, he did remember faces of those who fought, and those who simply vanished. "There will be more- the key is catching them before they take the final steps and throw away their lives."

He looked at the healer eyes purposely distant.

"We can't stop them, but at the very least we might give their deaths purpose." It was better to die fighting then die by one's own hand. "We can't afford to waste anything- even our lives."

He didn't feel strong or brave, really; what Celsus felt was numb. He had long since grown used to the pain around them, the agony, the despondency, the sadness, and it was this, perhaps, that made him the most frustrated and the most angry. The fact that it was not only considered normal for scouting parties to come back with less members than they'd left with, but almost expected was sickening.

They were being slaughtered and there was little they could do except keep fighting for as long as they could and as hard as they could.

Castor was not ignorant; he was easily aware of the goings-on in the camp, but it didn't make it any easier. Celsus' eyes flicked sideways towards the prince, his own expression wearied. Once he'd taken refuge in his art, and his gift for healing, but now he found it exhausting.

"Any life is too precious to spare," he said with a sigh. "I do not want any death to be sad and meaningless. The more of our kind we lose, the more the Negaverse takes a sick pride in our demise. If I had any ideas of what more we could do..."

Celsus trailed off, his eyes hooded and dark.

"We send them to die Celsus." He spoke with detachment, with no emotion. A flat despondency and apathy.

"We send them to areas of high youma, of many agents, and have them kill themselves before they can be corrupted or devoured. We send them to take their own lives unknowingly." He did not stop. "The more it looks like they went down in battle the better. Suicide will make others lose hope. Death in battle at least, can make them fight a little longer sometimes, thinking they must do so as to not have let others have died in vain."

Castor looked back at the people.
"Do you think me a monster for saying it, or for knowing that is holds truth?"

There was no compromise with Castor. There had never been compromise.

Celsus passed a flat, annoyed look in Castor's direction.

"They know the risks when they take these missions," he said angrily. "I have never wished for any of their deaths, or any of their lives to be taken from them, whether unwillingly or willingly. The blood on my own hands is rampant; I will not have others be made out to be sacrifices just to inspire the fight in some."

There was no real solution to this situation, no real way out. Every move they made would result in death and destruction on both sides, but they were drowning in the blood that pooled at their feet. Celsus clenched his fingers into a fist at his side, more out of habit than an actual desire to strike Castor.

"You are merely blunt," he said, but there was a sharp edge to his voice. "You do not make excuses, which makes you a great prince, but it also makes you less empathetic to those around you. You are not a monster, Your Highness, but neither are you a saint."

Castor disagreed, but then, he was one who tended to disagree with things on the premise of just being disagreeable.

"Blood is more than on our hands Celsus. It stains a hell of a lot more than that." A final glance to those passing and he let himself sigh. There would be more deaths in the coming days. Soon enough, these deaths would be forgotten, the tolls of war making all things seem fleeting.

"I was once a great Prince- but that was a lifetime ago." A world away. "I am all that remains, and perhaps, that is the greatest tragedy we face. This is our end for when no host for us senshi remain..."

He turned, wings folded behind him. When the last human was gone, when Chaos had drained the world dry, so the senshi would remain in the cauldron- fated to wait until they could be reborn again.

Celsus had never liked fighting; or rather, he had known it was necessary sometimes, but he disliked violence purely for violence's sake. There were times when it became unavoidable to be flung into battle, which Celsus had (mostly) accepted; but torturing for the sake of torture, pain simply for the sake of pain was something he could not stand for. The methods that some used to interrogate their Negaverse captives left a sour taste in Celsus' mouth.

"You are not wrong; the blood is everywhere, until all we see is red," he muttered, casting a weary look towards the broken and beaten people around them, his gaze following the path that Castor's took. There was so much suffering around them; it was difficult to see where the pain ended, if there was even an end.

"Still," said Celsus with a sigh. "You exist, Your Highness. You are here. You exist, even if your existence has been marred, both by some of your beliefs and your tolerance for...somewhat less than agreeable practices upon occassion."

He did not want to die like this - wiped into extinction by the Negaverse's greedy hands. Celsus clicked his teeth together in annoyance.

"It is not the end yet, Your Highness. We have not yet lost the entirety of our hope."

"Yet. Not yet. Ponder what that means Celsus." He sighed, begining his walk 'home'.

"All things die eventually. It just is a matter of when."
