Nemesis reached the outpost just before nightfall, clutching the wet mass of fluff and fur that was Invidia to her chest. The rain fell outside, deafening the noises of the wood in a most unsettling manner. She could have sensed something, if there was anything out there, on most occasion. But, she liked to have all her senses available when she was out on work. Business had been concluded in a timely manner, but what information she had gained wasn't all that much to be crying out in joy over. It was another life thoughtlessly wasted, another life she simply had to put to an end to try and tip the scales back into balance at least. Killing an agent of chaos was no longer something she hesitated over. It was a necessity. There was no saving the majority of them now.

Swinging the door shut behind her, Invidia jumped out of her arms and hurried to another area of the shelter, likely to dry herself off in peace. Nemesis was soaked head-to-foot from rainwater, her shoes leaving muddy imprints behind her before she even had the presence of mind to at least wipe them off on something. Her gaze swept across the small outpost, which was far more of a temporary place of rest than an actual habitable shelter. Someone had been by to at least re-stock it with snacks and beverages. The sleeping bags laid out looked relatively clean. Nemesis would deal with it.

Luxury wasn't exactly a common thing anymore, not when you were a senshi. She rarely got a hot bath when she was out on work, and thankfully the rain had washed away the blood staining her hands and clothes. It was dirty business, and she could see why most of the Resistance avoided it. It was far easier to kill someone than it was to extract information from them. But, even before the Negaverse seized control over most of the world, Nemesis had experience with torturing. The Blood Moon Court had served its purpose in preparing her for this path.

She sighed and unscrewed the cap off a waterbottle, quenching her thirst. With Invidia here she could rest for a couple hours at least, and then perhaps move back towards the main headquarters. She hadn't seen her own children in weeks, but they were probably better off with her away from them. The only company she seemed to willingly accept was Invidia's, but that was because their goals were aligned now, and forever Invidia would be Nemesis' cat. They had to save their stray knight, and then they'd kill every ******** Negaverser they came across. It was selfish for her to want to save only the people she cared about, but she also didn't give two ******** what anyone else thought of her actions.

"I need to go home soon, it helps straighten me out..." Planet Nemesis had a calming effect on her that was direly needed, despite how much energy it took for her to even reach her planet now. She waited for a few moments, and when Invidia didn't deign her with a response she muttered, "b***h", and carried on rummaging for something to eat.

The arrival of another body didn't go unnoticed, and while he'd been enjoying his nap, having to stay hidden and henshined was taxing on his body in general. At the very least he mused, the voice was one he knew, though with it came his usual sense of dread. "If you're anything like me, going home would be a hell of a lot better than trying to maintain yourself here." He didn't bother hide his footsteps as he walked to where he'd heard her voice. Knowing far to well how so many reacted towards surprises.

His own uniform was stained a deep red and brown, the feathers of his 'bow' caked together in the most unflattering of ways. While his face and arms were clean it was clear what he'd been doing before the rain had begun. And how long he'd been resting. Bags under his eyes, hair a mess, the royal of hail looked more a vagabond that a powerful force that embodied that nature of an entire world.

Not saying anything beyond his hello, Castor made his way over to a nearby cupboard, pulling out one of the few towels they had- even if it smelled like mildew, it would do it's job. Still in offering the cloth he gave his fellow senshi a very small smile. "Or would a shot of jack be better?"

Nemesis knew that voice, and she had heard of Castor's doings enough to know that he at least wasn't corrupted. Her loathing of him had diminished greatly over the years, especially now that there were more pressing matters to attend to. There were plenty of people who deserved her hate far more than Castor. Her instinct was still keen enough that she turned around swiftly, to keep her back from being open. Once she own eyes confirmed Castor's state of being, she relaxed.

She looked like a drowned cat, and he looked like a hot <********> mess. His clothes were stained with blood, and likely would have been caked by it if not for the onslaught of rain. At least he was doing something. They were weeding out the members of the Negaverse as much as they could, and so long as Castor didn't directly interfere with her work, she'd tolerate him. "It's quiet, back on Nemesis, and the overwhelming feeling of Chaos doesn't exist there. Nothing to drag me down, nothing to weaken me." But, her trips back to her planet were more emotionally and mentally rejuvenating than physically.

Reaching out, she took the towel from Castor with the faintest of smiles, her expression worn and half-hearted. "Both would be preferred, but I don't think they had the presence of mind to stock this place with anything decent." She had to wonder if booze wasn't readily available because there were still minors within their cause. Stupid to try and protect them in such a meaningless way. Their lives were already ********. All of their lives were.

"The years haven't been kind to you," she gestured towards his unruly appearance. Then again, she wasn't that much better off. She wrapped the towel around her head, drying her hair quickly. The braided pigtails she had been known for were gone now, her hair naturally wavy, lengthy and uneven. She hadn't cared to get it properly cut, and looking at Castor now, neither had he. It meant he had his priorities straight at least.

He listened to her, something that had taken a while for him to just do when others talked. He'd been brasher in his youth, to much ready to fight rather than listen and maybe try to talk it out. Or just thing for once in his life about things being said, told to him. Running fighters through his hair the unkempt mess was a touch better, the strands falling into place and odd strands forced to lay flat.

Reaching behind him, he kept his movements slow and measured. Nemesis and he had never been allies outright, and while things might have died down a tad, things were tense as usual. Then again, things were always tense when you were on the run every single second. A small flask he tossed it to her. "Whiskey. Tastes like a cheap jack knock off but it burns on the way down. Some punk thought it would be fine to drink on the job." He didn't offer an explanation beyond that. He felt it unnecessary.

"You can have it if you want- I'd probably chug it the second I was home anyway. Helps suppress the memories sometimes." He looked around the place and seeing no real spot to so much site, he chose to lean himself on the wall, arms folding back behind his head in a pose reminiscent of his former more casual self.

"My fabulous war looks aside, I take it that you've heard the news? No crew but rather going the road of a basic quarantine. Not to mention a boost in their 'donation' quota." The disdain in his voice was thick. "We're going to be grasping at straws to survive soon enough."

For a moment, she couldn't help but doubt him, her eyes narrowing as he reached behind him. It would have been too easy for him to draw out a weapon, reveal some sort of corruption that she could not innately sense. Caution was the only reason she was still alive. Gunn had been easily corrupted into a DMC senshi, Vulcan had foolishly thrown her life away from someone else, and Gehenna had caved to the Negaverse's lies rather than fight on. Out of them all, Nemesis was the last one standing strong. It wasn't a position she enjoyed, especially since she had witnessed the deaths of so many. She had been the single cause of more deaths now than she could count.

Her reflexes still seemed to be fine-tuned as she snatched the small flask out of the air. "Can't blame them, what else do we have to live for?" Nemesis didn't continue fighting this war for herself, but for those who still had a future left that needed to be saved. Her's was destroyed. She would never rebound from this, and she knew and it accepted that.

"The memories..." she hesitated, drawn back into a dark train of thought that took her a few seconds to work through. "I am not sure I want to forget them. They're not a badge of honor, but rather a way... to reaffirm that I am doing something. Maybe all the effort I've taken has... reaped some sort of reward, somewhere, somehow." She sighed, and it was clear she wasn't even sure she believed that.

"I... hadn't. I've been tracking down a target for a couple of days. It was a waste of my ******** time too." There was some of the old bitterness, the natural resentment towards things not going her way. "********. Things were already bad enough. It's just another kick while we're down - I'm not even sure how we're going to get back up at this rate."
PostPosted: Sun Aug 03, 2014 5:26 pm

For him the memories were ones of a lost life, a wasted past that had been reborn in the hopes of a granted wish only to discover that it would not be granted - this time. Castor had long resigned himself to accepting that fact, and had taken to forcing down the shame of such a failure.

"We don't live. We survive. All we can do for now." His fingers picked at the wall, wishing he could afford a nice bed like he used to have- that maybe he should treat himself to one if he could find such a magical place that would offer a real bed.

"We keeping going until we burn out and die- after that we wait a good thousand year and poof." He waved his hand in the air. "We're back for another round. Get kind of tiring though. Maybe in another life they'll give us a break." He doubted it. War was war, and this was one bound for eternity. "In any case the camps will be getting more rowdy I suspect. What was scare will just become more scarce, and soon after fights will break out over supplies, mothers will worry over their children- People will start to flee. The city might be the home of loved ones, but the fact is there are other places they might survive unnoticed, might pretend to be normal."

He lowered his arms, staring at Nemesis as if waiting for her to correct him.
"Do you really think we can take this for much longer? If at all?"

"If we fail now, when we're reborn, what kind of world will we be reborn into? I don't want to live cycle after cycle of misery and grief, memories piling up onto one another until despair is something you can't escape from." She had been plagued enough by her past life already in her early years. At least, one thousand years from now, Alkaid would not be reborn. She would not suffer the terrible fate most senshi were facing now. Nemesis would not be reminded constantly of her failure to save that one person.

"You know, a couple thousand years of Chaos reigning does not seem so impossible now." She opened the flask then, and took a quick swish of alcohol, the liquid burning her throat on the way down. It definitely didn't taste good, but maybe it would take the edge off of her emotions.

Their future was bleak, hell, their present was bleak. She had to wonder what her own parents would do. After coming out to them, they had been... surprisingly supportive. Now they were raising her children, and she almost hoped they would move far away, some place rural... some place relatively safe. Anyone close to Destiny City was putting their own lives at risk now. If you weren't Chaos, you were an enemy.

"No," she bowed her head, her voice somber. "I don't think we can. But... we have to. There's no choice. I am not going to abandon the future. I'm not going to sit back and wait for a rebirth while I can still do something here and now." They were ********, they likely wouldn't last long... but Nemesis would fight until the bitter end. She gave herself no other option.

"That's up to the cauldron unfortunately. We could purify everything, but a thousand years is a long time. It's no promise of a better tomorrow or a worse one. Though most have given up on recolonizing given the difficulty to just get basic supplies to even start cultivating let alone populating." His voice grated on the word, an issue he was not too happy with. "As a species, in theory, we can't die out- not without significant direct losses." His eyes breifly went towards her chest. Not our of anything sexual, but more to what was under the skin- her very crystal- her starseed. "Senshi are born to those who possess starseeds and right now, that means pretty exclusively humans." For now- the big ifs. The mysteries. The cycle would sustain itself but if an entire species was wiped out then it would be a slow wait until a new race was able to host the souls of order.

He eyed the flask he'd given her, near regretting giving it over. The future was grim and for all they did to ignore the reality was stupid. They would die. They would lose earth. This was a war that could not be won as things were. "We could do it you know. Kill all of them. Amass our powers and strike as one." They could kill every negaverse and corrupt agent in the city- as well as every other living thing and person within.

But it would kill them. It was a gamble, and one with odds stacked against them. If they failed then not only would they die, they would likely be taking all their supporters and kin with them. There were too few senshi willing to take such a risk- let alone senshi willing to support an act that would harm the so called innocents of Destiny City.

"Is it wrong that sometimes I think it would be better to just kill them all? The civilians- just how many really are innocent? How many have sold out each other just to make fast cash, to save their own skins?" Castor's eyes went to the door. "If I became the terrorist they claim I am, would it really matter at this point? Sometimes I really wonder."

The Nemesis of the past would have bristled at even the casual glance towards her chest. But, she seemed to understand what it was that Castor was looking at. Having transcended, Nemesis could not be corrupted, she had insured that in the future, there would be a Nemesis to fight. She knew well enough of the cycle of rebirth, that in the future the senshi could rise up to fight again. "I have faith that things will play out better in another time. Eventually we will put Chaos back into its place, decimate its agents... It is just not this time."

Folding her arms against her chest, she eyed Castor with a grim expression. It was sensible, to try and 'hard reset' the course of nature. "We could, but I won't. Damn, it's probably what we have to do and yet... I can't. I can't deny my children their futures. I can't deny whatever good is left on this planet the chance to thrive." No, she could not get behind that plan. It wasn't even about the 'honorable' way to fight, she honestly believed that those who were still good had the right to their lives. She would not take it from them.

She closed the lid to the flask and tossed it back towards Castor. There was still some left, and maybe it would be enough to start Castor on a different train of thought. "It doesn't matter if most of them are bad, I'm going to fight for those that remain good, who remain pure despite the bleakness Chaos has cast upon this damned planet."

A silent nod. "It's understandable. I- well." He smiled, bitterness in his words. "I don't see much a future for earth- not unless we go the route of the drastic blood thirsty prince." He even managed a laugh, though it too was bitter.

Flask caught, he quickly knocked it back before tossing it in what looked like a trashcan. It might have been someone's stash spot. He didn't particularly know or care.

" If we could... I'd take us away from it all. Go home. To just have the smell of the ice every morning- to hear the owls and horses again, so see the flowers blooming-" Memories of her. Memories of everything that had gone so horribly wrong.

Memories and dreams that would never happen again, not even in another lifetime.
"You have more hope than me Nemesis. Pretty sure I lost mine a long time ago. Maybe if I had kids I'd feel the same." But he didn't, yet another reason he was so lacking. "You think, that maybe, just maybe, we could save them? Truely, save them from their corruption?"

In her past life, she remembered feeling jealous for the wealth this planet had. In life, in peace, there was an abundance of everything here that Nemesis had not experienced on her own world. It was why she couldn't stand the thought of seeing this world turn into the dark, decrepit planet her inheritance was from. This planet and its people deserved to be free from Chaos, and Nemesis would fight for that. "Me too, sometimes I think of what I could make of my world. I am sure at one point I genuinely believed I could do it, make my planet inhabitable, free people from the Chaos here and build my world as the ultimate refuge from Earth."

But, how long would it take for the agents of Chaos to appear there? Escaping, perhaps, was not the ultimate answer... but it was the best one they had. "It's not a matter of if I think they can be saved or not. Instead, it is that I choose to save them. I will save them because I want to. I can't keep letting doubt plague my mind. I've always believed that if my will is strong enough, if my power is great enough, that it will become all I need to achieve what has to be achieved." Nemesis, above all else, had faith in her own abilities.

They were fighting a losing battle, but if she convinced herself that she could still do good with her life now, she'd keep fighting. For herself, for her children, for them. Everyone. "I just don't like losing," she admitted with a short laugh and a wry smile. "Even in the end, I won't admit it. I will not fail, and whatever I accomplish with the rest of my life will hopefully bring a little light back to this planet."

Her blue eyes rose to meet Castor's, "Have faith in me, because I'm the person most capable of saving this planet." If it could be saved, but they both knew how unlikely that was.

"We all think we could do it I think. Save, rebuild- but there is only so much we can do. Set the ground work. See how long we can last." He pushed off the wall, stretching out his back and arms, making his way for the door.

"I envy you Nemesis. I envy your hope." Opening the door, the rain still poured. One look back at her and he smiled. "Save earth Nemesis, because I don't think I can."

He didn't look back as he walked into the rain, ready to do what had to be done, just to survive.
