Chariklo had slipped into the woods, wanting only seclusion for a few precious minutes. A chance to breathe without inhaling the particular odor of the Oasis. A chance to not have everyone's eyes on her as they wondered when she'd turn around and betray them all. Maybe before all this started it might have been a valid question. But not know. Not ever. The integrity instilled in her at an early age by her mother was as strong as ever.

Chariklo would sooner die than betray anyone in the Resistance. As the tall eternal senshi wandered through the trees, she caught sight of someone else and debated turning back. If someone else was looking for some peaceful solitude, it would be rude to intrude. But some instinct kept her from moving.

After a moment, she shrugged and called out softly, "Hey, mind some company? If not, just lemme know and I'll find a different thinking spot."

Nick had to get away. He had to. There was a fourteen-year-old girl with a suppurating chest wound and he had done everything he could, but there was nothing more--nothing more--it was all down to luck, and health, and healing, and he had confidence in none of those things in a small girl versus a Captain with a ******** knife.

He shuddered, and retched, but nothing came up. Nothing ever came up. He was stuck, like this, here, and the Negaverse ruled everything now, and it was only a matter of time before they got him and got Tallulah and Finn's little daughter and he couldn't. Nick had to do something--anything. Just had to make something happen, to get out--

He heard something, and on reflex, he reached for his henshin pen and slid into the too-awful, too-familiar skin of Oenone. "Sure," he said, recognizing Chariklo. She was a… good assist. "Hello. Nothing to do back in the city, I suppose."

Nodding slightly to herself as the man powered up, Chariklo recognized him as Ida's resident surgeon. Moving slowly through the trees, she approached until she was standing close enough to touch him. Heaving a sigh, she stretched her arms above her head and leaned back against one of the trees.

"Oh," she answered lightly. "There's always something to do in the city. BUt a lady needs a break, y'know? Check in with the peeps, see the family, have a few drinks. What about you? Anything new and interesting here that no one's told me about?"

She tone was breezy, distantly friendly and very clearly indicated that she was fine with people holding secrets from her. Just so long as those secrets were not of the sort that would get her or her loved ones killed in their sleep.

Then, she tilted her head and took a closer look at Oenone.

"Dude, you're a hot mess."

"Not really," he said, sitting back down on his stump. He didn't particularly care if she wanted to kill him, or if she wanted to do… anything, really, anything at all, he really didn't. Once he'd been scared of the DMC, too, but that time was long gone. He'd never actually met any of the cruel ones that he'd heard existed. "Nothing anyone tells me."

He looked at her and tried to think of some way to respond politely to being a hot mess. "When you're right, you're right," he said. He wanted to be dead, or gone, or… somewhere else. Far away. He took a deep breath through his teeth. Oenone. He wanted to go home to Oenone. "There's a fourteen year old girl dying and I've done everything I can do," he said. "I feel pretty useless right now."

Oh. Ouch. Wincing sympathetically, Chariklo turned her head slightly to wipe at her eyes. It was bad enough to see adults die. A kid though. Kids were always the worst.

"If you've done everything you can for her, then all you can do is try to make her as comfortable as possible if she can't be saved," Chariklo said. It was a logical conclusion, but not without compassion. "I think any doctor would feel pretty useless in the same situation."

Cocking her head, she seemed to be thinking for a moment before sighing and giving a helpless little shrug.

"Is anyone with the girl?" she asked, thinking that even if the kid was out of it, there'd be a part of her that would still somehow know that she wasn't alone when the time came. That someone cared enough to be with her when Death came a-knockin'.

"Her parents are coming," said Oenone. "The mother's a knight, you know. So. Probably going to have a few cases of exhaustion to deal with later, they intend to bury her at her Wonder."

In the meantime, there was an old grandmother of a civilian with her. The woman had looked familiar to Oenone from the half-hidden memories of Spinel, and he tried not to think about it now. "Any news from the city? Are the ones left behind caught yet?" Yet. It was an inevitability, it was coming, he knew it--the Negaverse was too strong to be defeated. Wasn't it proven by the sheer number of places they'd held even five years before?

He tried to take a breath but only managed a broken sob. "I can't do this," he said. "I really can't."

Well, that was good. Not that Chariklo quite understood the whole Wonder thing, but at least the kid wouldn't be alone when it was time. Turning her attention to his questions, she offered a small, tight smile.

"No real news. They were talking about upping energy 'donation' requirements and requiring special permits to leave the city. The usual Big Brother s**t."

That 'yet' bothered her, thought she couldn't quite put her finger on why. Maybe because it sounded so fatalistic and Chariklo was still forcing herself to look for a time when the Negaverse wasn't a threat. The broken sob that followed startled her. Jerking her head around, the tall senshi stared at Oenone before tentatively reaching out for him.

"Can't do what?" she asked softly, intending to let him cry on her shoulder if it would help. "Come on, dude, talk to me. It's gonna be okay."

"No," he said, "it's really not." Five years and here they were. Five years and here they still were. What was the point of power if it accomplished nothing in the long run? The Negaverse had won. It had been winning before Spinel was awakened. There was nothing left to do except hide, and wait. "We're not going to win," he said. "We were never going to win. Maybe way back when, in the Silver Millennium, when there were enough senshi spread far enough apart that they couldn't get to us. And hundreds of knights for every planet. But there aren't. Not anymore. Chaos is so prevalent knights who should be awakening now aren't."

What could they do in the face of such overwhelming power except die? "Now they're not even letting people leave the city? They're not pretending anymore. It's obvious. No one cares except us! What are we meant to do to make this stop?"

Blinking at the unexpected outburst, Chariklo could only stand there a moment, arms half-outstetched. She wanted to comfort him, truly she did. But the tone of 'might as well roll over and die' rasped against her nerves and she found herself straighening to her full height, arms akimbo as she bristled.

"You are a doctor, are you not," she snapped. "Is that the kind of bullshit you feed your patients when they come in with something you can't treat or cure? 'Oh, I'm sorry! I don't know know to fix this, please go die quietly in a corner now. Kthnxbai!'"

Her voice was mocking, angry. And the mocking was quickly dropped in favor of blistering cold.

"Or do you ******** fight and do your best to help them and keep helping them until the end? I don't see doctors letting ******** cancer go untreated and unfought so why should we do the same for the Negaverse?"

Granted, she had no idea how to stop the Negaverse. And she sure had her moments of wanting to just give up. But she didn't. And she wouldn't. Her mind flickered briefly to some poem that they'd tried to make her learn back in high school. What was that line...? Ah yes.

Rage, rage against the dying of the Light.

When, in one sense the light was definitely dying. And she was sure as s**t going to rage about it.

Oenone sat through it, not terrified, not upset, not any more than he already was--so much these days hit that point of horrific anxiety that he was almost used to spending his every moment mired in terror. "There are tried and tested treatment methods I would recommend," he said. "And perhaps you have noticed that I am a trauma surgeon, not an oncologist." He had made a deliberate choice to avoid such thankless, bloodless fights. Oenone was not, never had been, made for leadership or drawn-out conflict.

He looked up at her, wearily unintimidated. "Is there a time-proven, peer-reviewed method to excise Chaos from those who don't want it excised? As long as there isn't, this is a losing fight. And you know it."

Bristling with anger, Chariklo unthinkingly transformed, feeling her wings unfurl and mantle as she stared down at Oenone. How dare this man, this senshi stand there and say such things. Sure, there were days when she wanted to stop fighting, wanted to just give up. But she worked through them. She kept fighting. And she would always keep fighting.

"No," she said in a cold, steely voice. "I don't know that, little coward. I don't hide behind my blanket of 'Why Bother, We Are Doomed' and b***h and moan about how losing the fight is inevitable."

Reaching out for Oenone, wanting to grab him by the clothes and lift him up to shake him repeatedly, Chariklo bared her teeth and glared.

"If you think for one minute that I'm going to give up and just lay down and give the Negaverse my throat, you are ******** insane. And if you think I won't stop fighting for one minute to make sure that my kids, hell every kid can stay safe and not become youma kibble..."

It was too much. The awareness that her Princess form was creating a surge of energy that the camp didn't need finally got through her anger and she forced herself to power down. Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, she forced herself to take a step back. Before she reached out and throttled Oenone where he stood. Only when she was fairly sure that she had herself under control did she open her eyes to study ******** you and your 'losing fight'. History is full of s**t like that and I never saw those people give up. And don't you ********' dare say that those fights were nothing compared to the Negaverse. They were still fighting evil s**t."

Searching her mind for something that might shake him up, Chariklo pounced on the first one that dredged up. Oenone was married, wasn't he? Well, it might work.

"Bet your wife is real proud of having married a ******** coward," she spat out. "It must really ******** complete her to have to baby your a** constantly and listen to you whine about how we're all gonna die any day now."

Okay, she was just being mean now. But damn it, she wanted him to wake the hell up.
