In a camp this size, there was always something to do. Nothing she, personally, did ever seemed to require any real skill, of course -- just the dull ease of long repetition -- but the lack of necessary skill wasn't enough of an excuse to get her out of work and into assignments that were less cookie-cutter. Even if it was all grunt work, and she felt sidelined doing it, like she was contributing less than her more talented comrades, that didn't change facts any. There was too much work to go around for her not to do her part.

It was nice, then, to at least get away for a little while. There'd been a recent successful capture mission, and that meant that there were currently four live Negaverse agents enjoying the hospitality of the castle dungeon at Camelot. The injuries they'd sustained in the course of their capture had initially been low-risk enough that Ida had declared them all stable for transport and incarceration -- but their injuries needed monitoring and their bellies needed feeding, a pair of tasks for which Hvergelmir had volunteered. At least it meant she got to get away for a little while, even if it was just to deliver four biodegradable clamshells full of camp food to a group of angry prisoners. And at least it would give her a chance to check on Camelot Royal Knight himself, which she was always surreptitiously trying to do. He worked so hard.

She was supposed to meet Camelot in the clearing where they stacked their firewood, so they could travel to his wonder together. Medical bag slung over one shoulder, and a stack of food in her arms, Hvergelmir made her way over to the clearing to find Camelot hadn't failed to be punctual.

"Hi," she said warmly -- mainly because 'hi' was one of the very few words in existence that could still say without a tongue, and tone was so important. If you only had one word with which to express that you were happy to see someone, you had to really sell it.

Camelot was all too happy to meet with Hvergelmir. As often as she tried to check up on him, he tried to check up on her. He could not help himself, feeling guilty for not being able to protect her, and wanting to ensure that he did not fail her again. He was the sort that took things like that very personally, though he would at the same time tell others feeling the same way that it was impossible for one person to be everywhere at once.

Sometimes he wished he could be the one exception to the very basic rule of physics that kept him bound to one spot at one time.

"Hi," he said gently, smiling at her with honest, paternal warmth. There was no point pretending he did not think of them all as his children, though he had never been good at hiding it, especially with the ones he was closest to. After losing his son to the Negaverse, there seemed to be a void inside him that would never be filled, though he was constantly trying, whether he knew he was or not.

He tried not to think about it.

"Are you ready to go to Camelot?" he asked, walking up to her. He had a roll of blankets with him and a bag of other basic amenities to give to the Negaverse captives. Unlike others, Camelot was not cruel, and he did not allow for the Shadow or others to use the dungeon or the prisoners of his Wonder for torture. Of course, what he did when no one else was there, with the aid of his crystal, was on his conscience alone.

He put his hand lightly on her shoulder and after a moment of mental prep, he took them to his Wonder. They appeared on a grassy field, and not too far off was the castle itself, the new banner he had hung atop its highest spire waving in the gentle wind.

Royal Knights were so powerful.

Once she'd hit knight rank, Hvergelmir had expected trips to her Wonder to get easier with time and experience. But as the years had gone on, and Chaos's hold on Earth had advanced, it had become more and more wearying each time to make the jump. As it was, she could only manage a visit to the Well once a week, just like always -- but no matter how much she drank from the Well while she was there, how much energy she drew, she never came back feeling any better than she had when she'd left, anymore. It used to keep her fresh and rejuvenated, as it was meant to: nowadays the only reason she could tell it was still working was that she never came back feeling near to collapse, like some of her fellow knights did.

But Royal Knights could do it constantly -- and despite the toll it must have taken, they still seemed to do it so easily. If Camelot felt even the slightest fatigue from the trip, he never showed it.

But then, of course he didn't. The great Camelot Royal Knight was never tired. He was never angry or terrified or miserably unhappy; he never complained; he never got headaches. He never smelled like body odor from a long day's hard work, and he always got eight hours restful sleep and ate a balanced breakfast.

Which, of course, was a bullshit image that took a tremendous amount of effort to maintain for the sake of morale, she was fairly certain. Once she was done with the prisoners for the day and had her hands free, Hvergelmir would see if she could get Camelot to give her any idea how he was actually doing lately -- he was the only father she had these days, and she was never really too old to be in need of one.

Hvergelmir shifted the stack of boxed food momentarily over to just one hand, surveying their new surroundings. It was nice to get away like this, to stand in the full sunshine for a few minutes again. No one looking, no one waiting to pounce, no one meaning her harm. No constant tree cover or going out in the pitch of night. Just soft, green grass, gentle wind, and clouds passing calmly away from the sun. The world was not as much at war here, in Camelot.

She made a broad, sweeping gesture at their surroundings using her free hand -- then, eyes crinkled in an obvious smile, Hvergelmir passed a splayed hand in front of her face in one of the better-known sign language words: beautiful. The basic intent would carry, she was sure, even if the sign didn't.

Camelot did not show his weaknesses, or at least he tried not to. Sometimes, the weariness of his life showed in his face, and sometimes he had lapses of judgement due to his exhaustion, but for the most part he wore his role for what it was. He commanded a strength that ran deeper than just his physical strength, reflected in his character and his need to help others feel stronger just by seeing him.

He was lucky that his wonder was on Earth, and that he was a Royal Knight. That was not to say he was not impacted by the travels there, but he was much more prepared for it than others.

Letting her tend to the captives as she would, knowing they would not be as nice to her if he went in with her, he waited patiently and kept an ear out for any trouble. He let her give them the supplies he had brought, the fresh blankets and things, and waited patiently in the castle. It had been built back up over the long years, out of necessity, though it was still nothing like it must have been once.

He looked at her when she signed and nodded his head, clearing his throat though he was not going to be speaking. It was just habit, a nervous one that anyone about to do something they had been practicing but not performing might do. This was his first real test, after all. He smiled at her, a silly face, and signed back, simply, that he was glad she liked it.

He grinned.

"I thought I would learn a little sign language, so it might be easier for you to talk to me, and I'll... know what you're saying. Well, I mean, I still have a lot to learn. But ah."

He felt a little silly and was sure he was getting some of the signs wrong, his hands clumsier than he would have liked, but at least he was trying. And he wouldn't be the one signing all the time, anyway. He just needed to know how to read it, so it was easier for her.

Hvergelmir's face lit up. Some people had infectious smiles, and Camelot was one of them: not the soft, benevolent smiles he bestowed on people as a Royal Knight, distant and protective, but the personal ones, bashful and caring -- the ones that came from Anthony Darrow, if he really cared about you. Even with her face half-hidden, she couldn't help but smile back.

And it really was an excellent surprise. There were so few people she could talk to without feeling like her vague gestures or her dry erase scribbles were wearing on their patience.

Hvergelmir set her supplies temporarily on a nearby table.

You did well!, she signed back with enthusiasm, trying to keep the conversation simple. I'm very happy I can talk to you.

I'll be back in a little while.

She took the supplies Camelot had brought, along with the food, and made her way down the stairs to the dungeon to check on their prisoners.

* * * *

Her arms were empty when she came back up the stairs; a long stain of chicken grease ran down the front of her dress where one of the three lieutenants (the fourth was their captain) had refused the food they'd brought and thrown it at her in protest. Well, she wouldn't die of chicken grease, and the other encounters had been more jarring, really. It was fine.

The man in the fourth cell, she signed with slow care, his knee is infected. I gave him medicine. I'll leave you more. Tell me if it gets worse.

Hvergelmir took a small bottle of antibiotics out of her medical satchel and set it on the table, for the lieutenant with the septic wound. Six per day. Okay?

At his assent, she nodded, dismissing the issue of the prisoners. She wasn't sure she wanted to talk about them. People in captivity unnerved her.

When did you find time to learn?, Hvergelmir asked. You're so busy.

Camelot smiled and felt very proud of himself for a very silly reason. he had managed to learn some sign language over the long months, and it was because he had wanted to surprise her with it. Such a simple, little moment, and it was easily lost in the scheme of things. But he had been looking forward to it, and now that he finally had his chance to show her what he had been doing, he felt very good about it.

It was nice, to feel this brief burst of normalcy and happiness. Amidst all the suffering and loss, they had to hang on to simple, sweet moments like this. He knew he would, and he would keep it close to his heart.

He sat on the grass and watched the sky as the clouds lazily rolled over head, completely oblivious to the plight of the little, insignificant life forms below. His wonder helped him be at peace, and he closed his eyes, dozing in the beautiful weather until he felt her aura approaching. He opened his eyes but he did not get up in a hurry, reclining in the sunlight.

Nodding his head, following her motions and getting the gist of what she was saying when he did not quiet know the signs, he took a mental note to give the Nega his medicine. He did not want them to suffer, at least not more than they had to.

At her question, he chuckled. It took a lot of books and a candle in his room when everyone else was asleep, but he did what he could to practice at least a half hour, or more if he could swing it, a day. Sometimes he failed in that, but he had been working as much as he could.

"I do what I can, I just... it's been a very slow process. I'm sure I should know more than I do, but ah... you know, I've picked up a bit. I wanted you to feel comfortable talking to me, and for you to know that I still want to listen, even if it's a bit more complicated now."

He was still new, she had to remind herself. She couldn't just go signing everything and hope he got the right general idea. They could ease into the transition from paper to sign.

Hvergelmir reached into her subspace storage to produce her writing pad, flipping it over from the paper side to the dry erase board on the obverse. It was how she was used to communicating with people, except the rare few friends who could read ASL. It could be a little slow, but not too bad, all told.

It means so much to me, she wrote, underlining judiciously. I'd like to be able to talk to you more, too.

Hvergelmir waited a moment, holding up the pad so he could read what she'd written, before erasing it and writing again. Any news of Nathan recently? Has there been any sign of him?

"I'm going to keep learning," he reassured, nodding his head. He smiled at her as she wrote, responding once she finished her sentence, just in case she wrote something he was not anticipating. He was really good at making a fool of himself at the worst times, so he had to avoid unnecessary risks.

When she asked about Nathan he winced and glanced away, up at the sky. It was hard to be calm, thinking about that topic.

"I have not heard much. Just that Painite is using him as her muscle, and making him attack senshi and knights. I have not run into them again, though, since that fight. She attacked my wife, though... and killed her daughter. My step daughter. I'm sure I've probably mentioned that before, forgive me if I'm... anyway, with Harmony and Nathan gone, Shalott and I are just trying to keep each other and our baby safe. I think Shalott... is wants to do something a bit more dangerous... but I can't let her."

He knew that, really, together, they could out muscle and General and an Eternal, but there was more to it than that. He would not have the heart to fight his own son, as far as he knew, and he would not let her hurt him, either.

"Ah. I was hoping there might be a chance to purify Chaonis, but I know what that can do to someone's mind... I doubt I'll ever get my son back. Not the one I lost."

Hvergelmir winced, hearing the latest news -- which wasn't much of news at all, and really more just a recounting of recent tragedy from start to open-ended finish. She reached out to brush some of the graying hair away from Camelot's face, to lay a hand in brief comfort over her surrogate father's cheek.

His relationship with Shalott had always seemed to her to be proving ground for him, a balance point for his more slowly considered, calm moves to action. Shalott was vibrantly passionate; Camelot was gently reserved. At best, they tempered each other.

Here, she wondered if they were simply at odds, simply struggling with their pain in different ways that put huge stresses on each other. Shalott had lost a daughter -- who was Hvergelmir to judge her choices or intentions? But Camelot had lost a son, too: it was hard going to ask him to give Chaonis up for lost. Not his child. Not this soon.

Ah, how she worried.

Nathan is still Nathan, she wrote. Chaonis is still Chaonis. If you take away whole sections of a person, they're still there. Memory helps shape what we are, and afterward helps us understand what we've become, but without it we've still come to the same place even if it's confusing not to see the path behind. Save him because it gives him a chance to live and be happy someday, even if it's not in a family with you. He still deserves that. It's more than Chaos will leave of him. Your son is still your son. You'll still love him even if he doesn't remember enough to return it the same way. Keep faith in him.

Camelot looked at Hvergelmir and smiled softly as she touched his cheek and tried to comfort him. He was doing his best to keep himself together, for the sake of what family he had left. Through blood or through bonds like this, he needed to keep himself grounded and available to them. Losing himself to his sorrow was not going to help him, and it certainly was not going to help them.

"I am hoping we'll be able to save him," he said, once she finished writing and he stirred from his thoughts. He offered her a very gentle smile, his eyes distant and sad, the air around him heavy.

"I want to purify him, to talk to him about it. But... it... the last time I saw him, he was fighting for Painite, and she treated him like her dog. I cannot bear to let her keep him, using him like that. It goes against everything he stood for: he hated Chaos, and would never have wanted to be taken. I feel like, with each day that passes while he is on that side, I am failing him more and more. Some say I should kill him, so he is not a weakness to me or others... but that does not seem like an option either. I would never.... Ah. well. I am certain there is a way to help him, and you're right. Even if he is not the Nathan or Chaonis I knew, he can still be free of Chaos."

He took a deep breath, trying to chase away some of the sadness that had settled.

"Well, anyway. I appreciate the chat. I do not ah... want to bog you down with all this. Sometimes it all catches up to me, but we're all prone to moments like that. As long as we keep fighting through, we'll find a way back to better times."

She nodded along. Camelot may have been apologizing for 'bogging her down' with his burdens, but she was grateful he'd opened up to her about it. Sometimes even just talking about problems was enough to make them a little more bearable -- especially for the ones who tried to carry everything on their own. Hvergelmir was satisfied that hopefully she'd helped, a little. Reminded Camelot that he wasn't struggling in the dark.

We're the good guys, right? she scribbled. We don't ever give up.

Do you want to go back?

"Yes, let's get back," Camelot said, moving to get to his feet and brush off any clinging grass that stuck to the fabric of his cape. Sometimes having a cape was a hassle. In fact, most of the time that was the case, and there were only fleeting moments when Camelot found himself thinking he was thankful for the thing.

But, he supposed, he could not be picky about his outfit. There were far worse things out there. At least he had pants and reasonable shoes.

"Ready?"

Once she was, he put his hand on her arm, then changed his mind and tugged him to her for a gentle hug. With that contact he took them back from Camelot to the reality of their real world, though it was still quiet when they arrived. He took a step back and cupped his hand to the side of her face very gently, with all the pride and love of a father in his gaze. He never had seemed able to see her scars.

"You're beautiful, you know. And your heart is bigger than most. I am blessed and honored to have you as my friend. I don't say it enough, but I want you to know that." One could never tell when things would turn sour in the war these days. If something were to happen to him, he would hate for her to not know how much she meant to him.

"Well," he took a step back now, taking a breath and feeling a bit sheepish. "Thank you for the company, and for taking care of those prisoners. I'll stop being so sappy and uh. Go sit in a corner." He laughed.

His hug was incredibly welcome -- as hugs from him always were and always would be. Camelot was special to her; she held onto the embrace longer than the teleport back to camp required, and leaned into the hand he pressed to her face.

You're my family, she signed back, and I love you. Don't you know that by now?

Hvergelmir smiled.

Not too sappy for me, she signed back, careful and slow. Then, as he was her knight, was everyone's knight, she cut a formal curtsy, gave him a final wink, and took her leave.
