So I played on session a year ago with a DM who played the game for year and I understood the basics but now a friend of mine how is brand new basically wants to play for just the fun of it. What books would be best to just get the basics for beginners?

I would say the basic books for Dnd 3.5: Player's handbook, Dungeon Master and Monster Manul

See the VM has a set of books to play with it's just there's so much and what not that it's hard to follow when starting your own campaign. I'm trying to figure out if there's just a select few book I could stick to and what would be recommended.

Oh its whitewolf, Definitely the rulebook and players guide. I see they have a storyteller book as well.
