It was a grand day, Corwin reflected with a soft smile. It was true that the weather left a bit to be desired; the sky was overcast, with grey clouds that hung heavy and low in the sky threatening rain. But a gentle breeze was blowing, and the world beneath the grey, overcast sky was lush and green. He knew that the year before had been terrible for the Kawani lands; a lack of rain over the previous few years had culminated in the terrible fires that had destroyed the main Kawani village, several smaller Kawani habitations, and numerous lives. Corwin hadn't known anyone affected; he and his sister were too recently arrived in the Kawani lands themselves. But disaters of that magnitude had a way of making themselves known; the news had reached their friend Hayalet's ears, and he had naturally informed the twins before setting off to see what, if any, aid he could provide to the afflicted.

But that had all been last year; this year, the spirits had finally seen fit to send the badly needed rains, and the land was once again lush and green. The meadows were filled with grasses and dotted with flowers; the forests were so full of leaves that it was impossible to see farther than a few Soquili lengths away. No matter where you looked, you were graced with the sight of natural beauty; it was hard to believe that only a year ago, it had been barren and desolate.

Corwin was happy to see the change; even if the sky was grey, the world itself was once again alive, and that was what was important. It was true that as a flutter, he had a vested interest in there being an abundance of flowers; flowers were typically a flutter's favorite, and primary, food source; not having flowers around could make life much, much harder. Corwin might be a grown stallion now, but he still remembered all too vividly the hungry times of his youth, when his parents had still been alive and they had all been teetering on the brink of starvation. People tended to try to block out bad memories, but Corwin would never be able to forget the gnawing, twisting sensation in his stomach. Nor would he ever be able to forget the fact it was because of that round of famine that he and Coralia had lost their mother.

Frowning, Corwin tried to shake off the negative thoughts. Goodness, where had those thoughts come from, and why did they always pick such inopportune places to crop up? It was a beautiful day, he was out in the open, he had no schedule to follow, his sister had finally accepted that he could wander around on his own without being kidnapped...

It must be the sky, he reflected as he once again looked upwards. Grey sky, grey mood?

No, that wasn't going to be him. Negativity had never been his thing; he didn't stress out, worry, or fret about the past. Life had had it's rough moments, but he had never been one to let the sorrows of the past ruin the beauty and wonder of the present!
