Teepee*Proserpine is Maxed Out* Matania had found herself alone again, just shortly after payment of her services to a wounded soquili needing assistance from a nearby unicorn. His wound had been deep, but luckily not life threatening. There had been word of kalona nearby, so no doubt they were behind this older gentlesoquili’s pain. She had huffed in annoyance at the thought. The Kalona breed were nothing but trouble and haughty, full of themselves, attitudes. It annoyed her to no end. But at least they hadn’t been too horrible to take on and fend off. Most had fled shortly after the fight’s beginnings, if it even had gotten that far. Recently a couple of normal residents, those who had recognized her, had fled upon sight.
'As they should,' she snorted derisively.
Those holier than thou beasts knew nothing of fear and pain, let alone know it well enough to create they own. They were weak creatures that didn’t deserve their namesake. And they had the unfortunate additive of reminding her of home. A place she hated to think about. A place she had nightmares about. A place she couldn’t escape even if she wanted to.
That said, Matania had a special place in her claws for kalona and anyone who reminded her of them. Save for the pure idiots who called themselves Elyos. They had wings, yes. They had the ability of flight and looked almost exactly like her. But unlike her they were too bright. Too warm. And too damn welcoming. Life wasn’t like that. But yet the herds of Elyos inisisted on being eternal optimists.
Nothing bred egos than optimism. Matania knew she had that once. Back during a time when family was thicker than blood. When it was not okay to betray your family for the herd alliance. She stopped her forward momentum for a moment as her memory of her family flashed before her. Never again would she see them. Mataius had made sure of that when he cast his vote against her. And what made it worse was that she agreed with the decision.
Now the herd of Gelkmaros was destroyed. All of her friends were dead. All of her scouts and warriors were dead. All of this was because of her. More disturbing was that her brother signed her exile in his own blood. Not that she could blame him anyway despite her hating him to the core. His love was dead. But that was of her own violation, not his sisters. She was the one who screamed at Matania to run before the rain of fire obliterated the valley in which the herd took residence. But Mataius wouldn’t hear any of it.
So here she was, in the Kawani, alone, and wanting to atone for her sins.
And the Gods seemed it fitting to throw her the first in many curve-balls.--- Proserpine was so close she could almost taste the heavenly blood in which flowed through the little Nymph’s veins. So silky smooth and perfect for an evening snack. It had been far too long since the Kalona mare had taken such a small creature for a spin. But then again, most of the little breeds took to staying near places Proserpine could not tread. Namely in the form of differing herds that offered the smaller species a place in their homes.
But not this evening apparently. The Nymph was seemingly content to play catch within the fish in the crystal clear lake. Proserpine was more than a little amused at the thought of a mere lesser soquili trying to eat a fish with her blunt little teeth.
But alas, Proserpine didn’t have blunt little teeth.
She grinned darkly from within the shadows nearby. The trees providing a perfect cover for her little scheme as she slide her tongue over her sharp fangs. A little Nymph would provide her with a lovely dessert taste. A dessert taste she hadn’t had the opportunity to partake of in far too long.
‘A fitting reward for all the hard work you’ve done.’ the familiar hiss of her Shadow hissed in her mind.
Yes, it very much would be.
Proserpine crouched low to the ground, almost panther like, her glowing red eyes training on the unsuspecting Nymph mare.
'A fitting prize indeed my Shadow. Thank you~'--- Tanzi’s eyes trained on the brightly colored fish just below the surface of the water. It’s colors of red, orange, and white tantalized all of her tiny little senses. It was getting late. Sure. Would her family want her home soon? Yeah, that would probably be the case and she could just hear her mother now yelling at her siblings and father to go find her. But they wouldn’t find her of course. They were as snazzy in the directional department. Not like her. Definitely not like her.
She had a quick wit and a charm about her that wasn’t quite like the others in her large family. But she loved them none the less. Even though her brother stilled loved to pull her pony tails. And they were all grown up now too! She would have thought that the aging process would have helped define their masculine, MATURE, nature. But…apparently not, for she woke up this morning with a gecko on her stomach a tail full of honey!
She arched her little hooves and brought them down quickly into the water. It wasn’t her intent to hurt the fish, but she did want to play with him. The splash covered her upper body, and the fish scattered quickly to get away. It didn’t seem like said fish wanted to play with her. It was agitated and very much looked upset with what was going on around his home.
“Sorry Mr. Fishy,” she mumbled and turned, wading out of the water and onto dry land.
Dripping wet was so last fall.
And with a quick shake, Tanzi began to rid herself of the water she had splashed on her body just second ago…okay maybe more than just a few seconds ago. Not like anyone was watching or looking at her…
Or so she thought.
It was quick but definite, and her larger Nymph ears caught the discreet noise just to her right. Tanzi snapped her head over to the side, eyes trying to find out what the source was. It caught her off guard for sure. Normally soquili weren’t out and about over here at the later hours.
Nothing.
‘Odd..’she thought to herself as she turned back to look at the clean, crystal clear water.
But it was whatever. There was a slight breeze going on but nothing that would garner her immediate attention. It seemed best if she took a quick drink from her favorite watering hole and head back home. Save her mom a heart attack and her father a quick tail lashing. Poor dad, he could never catch a break. Between her mom and her siblings he had a run for his money. But he was a sweetheart that was for sure. Tanzi felt bad for leaving him with them, ALONE, for a longer period of time than normal today.

Proserpine’s eyes glinted dangerously, her fangs poking hungrily from between her closed maw. Perked and ready for food, for lunch. Perfect size! Much like a single serving at the soquili a la cart! Her muscles coiled and tensed. Twitching and eager to feed. Too long had it been since her last true kill. The screams that would come would be her serenade during dinner as she ate the little Nymph alive. Piece by single piece.
’Strike when you’re ready my love,’ the voice hissed, ’strike while the sun is hot in the sky.’
And Proserpine did, springing into action and barreling towards the miniature soquili by the water. The clear blue will be stained red this afternoon. And Proserpine’s perfume would re-applied. Such beauty and warmth in the blood. Complete and utter perfection. The time had come to feed!
The thought was glorious.
---
Tanzi knew little of what was coming her way. She had done nothing she could think of to warrant her fate. So, when a dark kalona mare headed her way, Tanzi’s sensitive ears picked up the sound immediately. She turned abruptly to face the sounds, her eyes growing wide as the large mare ran towards her little form. What? WHAT? Tanzi wanted to move, to run, but her muscles wouldn’t budge. Why? WHY? What was happening?! No! No! NO!
She could see the menacing mouth of the kalona mare grin almost psychotically, almost lost in her single-mindedness to feed. Little did Tanzi know that it was so much more than that. But she wasn’t that mare. And now she was too petrified to move from her spot in the middle of the small clear lake.
“Help,” she murmered hoarsely, “Help…HELP!!”
And with that her muscles finally moved on their own accord, springing into motion as she tried to make her escape. She had to escape! She wasn’t ready to die! No! No! NO! She still had so much to live for! So much to do! Please! Someone help her! Please!!
Her tiny legs worked into overdrive as she tried her very best to run, to escape and hide. But of course the kalona mare was gaining on her, inch by painstaking inch. Tanzi could feel the hotness of the evil mare’s breath on her haunches, snapping at her fragile bones. A tear escaped her eye, and then another. She skidded along the dirt and mud around the lake. Scared out of her mind that her would be killer wasn’t using her wings. It was playing with her. With their food!
“Help! Someone! Please!!”
She slid harshly to the right, for the mud had caked her hooves and decreased her grip on the land, and she slammed into a large tree. Pain shot through her body, through her hooves, then legs, then spine, and finally her head. It made her dizzy, disoriented. And for a brief moment she forgot who she was and where she was at. What was going on. All lost for a slight reprieve until she came to a microsecond later. She shook her head to gain her balance, her legs curled under her as she laid there on the ground prone.
It was then a shadow overcame her. And when she looked up she saw the kalona staring down at her with a devilish grin. It had caught her. And it was proud. It spoke to her calmly and seductively, the voice a purr, a promise of death. Tanzi’s eyes widened, glistening with unshed tears.
“Please don’t,” she begged her killer, “Please let me go! I promise I don’t taste good!”
She heard the laughter, a deep psychotic laugh that chilled her to the bone. And she watched in horror as her killer came closer, teeth bared and ready to strike. That’s when she closed her eyes, waiting for it to end.
---
Matania’s ears perked forward as she heard something nearby. It was faint at first, barely something noticeable. But then it became louder, and louder, and louder. It became a scream Matania could not ignore even if she had tried or wanted to. A screech for help so loud it shook Matania’s bones. It didn’t take but a brief moment for her senses to spring into action. Her training coming forward at a hyper pace, flooding her mind and body with skills and abilities she hadn’t used in some time. Someone was in danger. Somebody needed help. And badly.
Her body sprang forward quickly, her mind and ears following the screams for help. She flew past the trees and brush, her claws digging into the ground to give her a better grip and extra boost of speed and accuracy. She flew over a fallen log, a family of rabbits poked their heads out to see what was wrong. She paid them no mind. Other things were more important. She charged into the clearing, her hair coming around to fly around her, eyes scanning around until she saw the source of the screams of terror.
A tiny Nymph. A tiny Nymph staring up into a kalona mares maw. Matania’s eyes narrowed as a growl escaped through her closed lips. Those cursed kalona! This one would not get her meal today!! She flew forward, her armor clicking around her form as she charged. Her mind on the soul thought of destroying that mare’s idea of using another living creature as a meal. It wasn’t going to happen, not on her watch.
She watched as the kalona mare turned to her for a moment, a brief moment of shock flitted across her face, but it wasn’t enough time for her to react and Proserpine slammed her body into the other, causing the darkness to fly backwards away from the tiny Nymph.
“How dare you try to kill another for your sick pleasure,” Matania growled darkly, planting herself firmly between the two.
She saw the kalona growl, eyes narrowing as her hoof pawed the ground agitated. But Matania stood firm, her eyes defiant. She wasn’t going to move. The other would have to fight her first in order to get her meal. And Matania wasn’t going to go down without a fight. She would fight until her dying breath. But she had no inclination to die to today. That just wasn’t in the cards. If she died, the fate of the Nymph would be certain death.
And that pissed Matania off. She was here to help people. And help she would. The kalona charged at Matania, wings outstretched as her fangs came out to play. And Matania returned the favor. Her wings flashed outwards as she seemed to almost grow her form. It was metaphorical of course, but Matania would match anything this kalona scum threw at her.

Matania clashed hard with the kalona when the dark one barreled at her at full force. In kind, the hippo’suti warrior dug her claws into the ground and braced for impact. And when it happened, there was a flash of pearly white fangs and black and purple. Matania growled lowly in her throat ad tore at the kalona. Twisting her body to meet her opponent in the middle. For certain this mare was not used to full out battle with an opponent such as herself, but for a dark one, she knew how to pack a hoove.
“Run Nymph!” Matania called out abruptly and kicked out with her claws, “I’ll take care of this!”
---
Tanzi watched in horror as the carnage unfolded. Not only was she shocked she wasn’t dead yet, but also that someone had heard her at all. Let alone come to her aid as this winged mare had. Her little body screamed at her to listen to her new saivor, but on the same front her mind wouldn’t listen at first.
‘Come on Tanzi! You know you need to listen!’
And so she fought with all she could to do as her savior had asked. Forcing her stiffened muscles to move and at least hide. She grit her teeth and stumbled backwards, falling over leaves and branches in her haste. And the more she moved the better and easier it was going to be to run and hide.
---
Proserpine snarled and bit down on Matania’s wing, causing the hippo’suti to cry out in pain. And with the gush of blood in her mouth her eyes glowed in glee. She would win this fight and have two meals this very night! She would make sure of it! Her shadow would bask in the blood and glory of a winning attack.
‘Go my pet! Finish her off!’
Her shadow was becoming more forceful in her head. It’s happiness thrumming through her veins. So full of darkness and death. Proserpine could feel the pure evil pushing her further and further into it’s madness. But in losing herself, she didn’t have time to react to Matania’s claws coming upwards and gouging into her sides. She grunted in pain and her hold on the mare lessened unintentionally.
---
Matania dug in her back claws further and further into the dark ones hide, feeling the bones crack and blood rush forth between each of her claws. Despite the pain in her wing from being bitten she was not going down. Not now and not ever. This was to be child’s play. This mare had nothing, NOTHING on her! She was better than this! She was going to win!
‘Control your thoughts and actions young warrior.’
The voice of her long ago mentor echo’d in her head. His presence giving her a much needed boost of energy. With a flap of her wings she began to pull the kalona mare upwards by her tail, intending to flip her over on her back.
---
She finally had found a safe hiding place within the underbrush of the large trees. Tanzi couldn’t help but stay and watch in rapt horror at what she was actually witnessing. The mares fighting before her where pretty much neck and neck for power. But on that same note Tanzi was hoping that when the hippo’suti mare took flight, taking the kalona with her, that the former had the overreaching and needed strength.
“Come on… come on….” She softly ground out between her semi-closed mouth, “take out that scary dark one!”
She had to come out on top and win over the other. There was no other way or else they’d both be fresh meat for the slaughter. No, no, no! Her savior had to win! HAD to win!
---
The kalona felt her feet start to leave the ground her wings immediately flashed outwards to stop her ascent, or at least try to stop her ascent. She knew exactly what the other was trying to do. And it wasn’t going to work. Not if she could help it. She beat her wings downward and twisted her body around multiple times, not only getting free of Matania’s deadly claws, but also flying a tad backwards to stare at the other darkly.
“You’re more trouble than you’re worth you stupid mare,” she hissed darkly.
Feeling her blood flow freely from her now much unneeded wound Proserpine snarled again. This battle was nothing short of ridiculous. She was no coward. But this wound was going to keep her back a bit. A lost cause if the God Kalona called it anything. The little Nymph was long out of eyesight. She could still smell the stupid little thing. But at this rate her new protector wasn’t worth the hide she’d make if dead.
---
When the dark one was able to twist out of Matania’s own teeth and fangs she flew back to stare back at the evil one. Her breath short from the battle and sweat poured down her face. She was by no means out for the count, but this was getting rather ridiculous. And when the other mare sneered her comment at her, Matania grinned back at her.
“Should say the same thing for you dark one,” she called back snarky, “seems like you’re tired and in pain. You should leave now before you’re hurt worse. Take your dark hide elsewhere before I do it for you.”
Her bitten wing hurt like a b***h that was for certain. Matanaia figured the sooner this kalona left the sooner Matania could land before she fell out of the sky. That wouldn’t be comfortable. And this kalona didn’t need to see her own pain.
---
Proserpine snorted indignantly, “be lucky I see when it’s useless to continue. Be warned you ignorant fool. This won’t be the only time you’ll see me. I’ll be back and make that Nymph my next meal. When you’re not around and can’t help her.”
Her shadow may not be happy at this new development, but Proserpine had more sense than allowing a blind rage or hunger overtake her sense of logic. This mare was more than what she seemed, and Kalona be damned Proserpine wasn’t going to stay around much longer and allow her wounds to stop her from battling in the future.
“And besides, you’re in pain as much as I am. I say we call it a simple draw for now and fight again at a later time. You’re not stupid. And neither am I. You’re no killer.”
She said it somewhat gleefully. This mare knew nothing of killing or true death. And when her opposing mare’s eyes flashed dangerously and her teeth bared at the comment, Proserpine couldn’t help but laugh. She laughed loudly.
“See you around stupid mare. And next time be prepared to kill.”
And with a swift beat of her wings Proserpine took off towards the mountains. Towards Hellfire and her other newly minted minions. There would be time for more blood later.
---
Matania watched with narrowed eyes as the dark one left the clearing, her claws aching to tear that mare limb from limb. How dare she make comments such as the ones already spoken. She was the one who knew nothing of pain, suffering, and death. True death to be more precise. She was a cold blooded killer for certain, but in the truth of things, the dark one only knew how to kill and eat. That has nothing on what Matania had seen in her short life.
With a sigh she finally allowed her self to use the winds and slide down back to the ground and land. And with her claws touching the ground she rotated her wings to try and get the throbbing pain to go away. The dark ones words still echoing in her head and she did so.
“I know you’re still there Nymph. You can come out now. It’s safe.”
---
Tanzi cautiously came out of her hiding place to look at the hippo’suti mare in the clearing. She was covered in sweat and blood. Her claws were especially tinged with the deep red of the kalona’s blood. And Tanzi couldn’t help but feel bad. If it weren’t for the mare she would have been dead. But on that same note she wouldn’t be covered in blood, sweat, bitemarks, and scratches either if it weren’t for her. She should have never left home! None of this would have happened!
“I’m sorry,” she whispered ashamed and blushing, “you’re hurt because of me.”
When she felt Matania’s eyes look at her almost surprised Tanzi rushed out her next words, “I’m in your debt! I’ll help you out with whatever you need!”
When she saw the surprise mix with guilt Tanzi began to feel confused. Why guilt? That didn’t make any sense. The mare had nothing to be guilty for! She was the one who should feel guilty, if anything.
“Please? You’re hurt. I can help you. Please let me help. I can help. I know where there’s healing herbs and places to rest.”
Tanzi’s eyes cast downwards and waiting quietly. There was no way this mare was going to get away without some sort of help from the Nymph. That was proper manners.

Matania felt herself sighing softly when she was met with the almost begging nature of the miniature soquili before her. As much as she wanted to just leave the mare to her own devices, her sense of honor to the code of protection pushed and convinced her to stay, at least until she knew the other was safe. That the kalona mare was long gone and no longer an issue. That couldn’t take look long could it? And besides, Matania couldn’t deny the fact that she was injured, even if it was minor scratches and bite marks. Plus those marks were in obvious places and it seemed that this mini wasn’t going to leave her be either until she knew Matania was taken care of. So she felt herself giving in despite her wish not to.
“Alright, show me the way.”
Her words had the expected effect. She watched as the miniature mare’s eyes shot up in happiness. And Matania had to internally smile despite herself. It was good to help another in need, it felt right for a change.
---
The fact that Tanzi was happy and excited was an understatement. The clawed mare wasn’t going to leave so soon before she could repay her for her help! She swiftly turned away from the larger mare and began working her way towards her intended destination. It wasn’t too far from here, quiet, and small. Easy to stay hidden too if it was so desired. Maybe she could convince the mare to let her tag along. Tanzi was so easy bored these days and chasing after fish in order to play with them seemed less than exciting. The fact remained Tanzi, despite her fear of the kalona mare that had just tried to eat her, had just gotten a taste of a life outside of her own family. And that alone sparked a desire to see the world for everything it had to offer. And maybe this mare would be the key for her to be able to do that without fear of getting eaten.
And as she led that mare towards the end destination, Tanzi took note of her physical traits. How could she note though, the mare was fascinating! So different than anyone she had come across before. Dark gray coat with many scars, metal armor worn with plenty of use, large fluffy wings that Tanzi could only ever dream of having. This mare was definitely a war, had seen battle, and knew what she could do. Tanzi could only ever dream of being as awesome as this creature in front of her. And it was then that Tanzi had made the decision to follow this mare wherever, learn what she could, and become like her. A warrior who could help others.
Very shortly they came to their resting place, an alcove with a crescent moon shaped rock formation surrounded by forestry and shrubbery, minimal clearing space, and plenty of herbs and flowers to help with healing. The rock formation could provide enough shelter from the elements, especially rain and snow, and the greenery surrounding the small garden provided decent coverage for everywhere else. Wasn’t such a bad place if Tanzi said so herself. Hopefully her savior would think the same.
So, she looked up to the hippo’suti mare with hope in her eyes, hoping that she would like this place just as much as she. It was a favorite place of hers, a place she came to multiple times a week, sometimes for multiple days at a time. Her mother used to come here too in order to gather these plants for her own healing pastes and concoctions. But that was before her mother got sick...Tanzi quickly shook her head to be rid of those thoughts.
“All these plants can help with healing if I remember what my mother has said in the past. As far as I know nobody else comes here anymore, only me when I want to get away from everyone else in my family. Do you like it?”
