He went in through the window, during the dim hours of dusk, when Zac [and many other hunters] had slipped away to claim their dinner at the cafeteria, leaving the dorms relatively quiet, and decreasing the chances that someone would spot a dark-capped figure prying glass upward to slither in to a stranger's room.

Perhaps this was excessive, and perhaps he'd get in trouble for it eventually -- but in the moment, it seemed like the greatest idea Ever had come up with in his life, and really, only fair. If he'd had nightmares his first few weeks [no, months] at Deus, then they had been character-building, and had only helped prepare him all the more for his first adventures.

And so he didn't hesitate. Five minutes, maybe ten, and then he'd leave again: through the door, this time, and up the hall, back to 104 with the door cracked so he could watch as Zac came past again to return to his room and lie in wait to complete his plan.

It worked like this: around eleven PM, when he was perhaps trying to go to sleep, from somewhere in Zac's room came a soft sighing, just at the edge of hearing. It wasn't continuous, wasn't often. In fact, it happened rarely enough that he might just think it was in his head, except that someone at some point had mentioned the possibilities of ghosts haunting these rooms, and maybe that would build it up to be more than it was.

gunna do this like drabbles? ;D we can build up toward 'catching' Ever? little snippets and Zac can respond and eventually, I guess, find out where it's coming from....personally, I think it'd be more fun if it it took him a few days, but let me know lol

He didn’t remember leaving his door unlocked, but gods honest truth it had been a long day. He’d gone sparring to learn his weapon better and he’d learned a lot about what he didn’t know regarding spears. There had been at least SOME dumb luck involved, and a lot of teasing from his weapon, who good naturedly gave him some tips, but come down to it he was dog tired.

He waved off the door as forgetfulness and collapsed onto the bed with a heavy sigh. He was home sick, that didn’t help. It was warm enough here, but was an island but it wasn’t home. He missed the city he missed his surf board, hell he even missed his classes, and the shitty job, and being told over and over the history of tattoo and why it was so important even if he could recite that part of the lessons by heart.

He closed his eyes, draped an arm over them and let out a sigh…

Perhaps a moment later, something echoed it.

He moved his arm with a small frown, hearing things… yeah… definitely hearing things. Too many ghost stories for one day like ‘monsters in the water’ and murdered girls with broken locks on their doors.

He got up and checked the lock, making sure it –was- locked this time before settling again. Nothing, blissful peace and quiet and he was just starting to drift off to sleep again when he heard the whisper of a breath.

He froze, attentive to the slightest hints of movement or the whisper of something, or someone alive in his room… nothing, silence, silence, and more silence. Unless you counted the sound of his heart beating a little louder in his chest, but he wasn’t scared.
Nope, he wasn’t scared at –all-.

I mean really… they hunted monsters. They wouldn’t leave some…ghost around, assuming ghosts were part of the ‘things that are real’ quota…just because she used to be one of them…right?

It wasn’t even her room…

It had been –someone’s- room though, hadn’t it.

Had someone died in this room?

s**t….

It was going to be a LONG night.

- Sounds good to meeeee! I have some thoughts for when he DOES figure this out/tracks down the sound/pieces it together. So this could be rather fun if you're up for it!

The Sighing

It stopped around 3 am. It stopped because Ever needed to go to sleep, himself, because he had duty in the morning and as it was, he'd be tired.

The next night, though, it would start again. And the night after. Three in a row, soft sighing now and then. It was subtle, and that was what made it so amazing.

if you want to reply more to the nightly sighs, just label posts 'the sighing', as many as you want

The Little Girl

The fourth night would be different: by then, Zach probably frantically hunting for the source. The sighs had been frustrating, likely, and a little bit scary, louder sometimes and quieter others, but generally...pretty harmless. But this was worse: silence, not a peep, until about two in the morning, when there was just one quiet, plaintive, somewhat high-pitched, "help me."

or this one. or both. 8D

The Sighing ---

The second night went much like the first, anxious introspection on the probability that there was actually a ghost, only towards the later hours of the night did he start to wonder if there was just a joke behind this, more than imagination. He pulled the blankets over his head and groaned into his pillow willing the soft sighing to shut up and go away… and those were the polite thoughts. Of course, when he finally got up to try and hunt down the source of it, irritated enough to recognize that it seemed to be coming from a consistent location it, or course, stopped.

He swore and stomped out for a late night shower to rather literally cool his head.

The Sighing ---

The third night he was waiting for it, circles under his eyes, as much coffee as he could secret to his room given the lack of sleep and scowling so vehemently that had they been able to weaponize that glower it would likely have turned out in the shape of a shield with Medusa’s head on it, and possess similar effects to the mystical head.

He still couldn’t quite pin down the source.

The sighs were too inconsistent, the closest he came was a round of three sighs, right in a row, but lack of sleep was working against him for finding the source. Some hidden microphone, a tape recorder…something!

He finally collapsed into bed an hour after the last sigh and vowed to ignore any attempts by Aro to get him up and out for a morning run... or at least to try.

The Sighing

Arorangi had pushed his way into Zac's room with a cheerful "Wake up, mate, it is time to run!" - only to find the trainee in question sound asleep in his bed and studiously resisting his pokes and prods as Aro attempted to wake him up. Frowning slightly, he reached and tugged at a lock of Zac's hair, trying to get him to open his eyes.

"Up, friend!" he said, and then asked, "What is the matter? Did you not sleep well?"

Idle hands swatted at the tugging hand, a soft groan followed. “… aye… mate, I think my Blimin room is haunted.” He groaned and dragged a pillow over his head. “That…or it’s the worst RUDDY joke ever pulled…. Else I’m insane… could you shack up here tonight?” He asked rubbing hard at his eyes, words slurred together he was so tired.

The Sighing

Arorangi stopped prodding at Zac's hair to put one hand on his hip, still frowning slightly. "You think there are ghosts in your room?" he asked, tilting his head a little as he considered this. "Actual ghosts? That is pretty strange, but if it makes you feel better, I will stay over to help you figure it out. Maybe we can go ghost hunting," he added with a grin, clapping a hand on Zac's shoulder and in the process knocking the pillow over his head aside. "Do not worry, mate, we will figure it out."

“It is strange…why would an island full of monster hunters let a ghost stay in a dorm? Seems a bit contrary… unless it’s a test to see if I pass it?” He rubbed his eyes and grumbled at the pillow being knocked asunder.

“Tonight then. Ghost hunters I guess.”

The Sighing

By the time evening rolled around, Arorangi had made himself comfortable on the floor of Zac's room, his own blankets spread out in a makeshift bed and his pillow propped on one side. He was currently sitting, leaning back against the wall, a small Word Find book in his lap as he looked down at it.

Arorangi circled a word and looked over at Zac.

"Are you sure you are okay, mate?" he asked. "Do not worry."

The Sighing

There was no regularity to the sighs, and they were never frequent enough to trace to the source. In fact, they were soft enough that, unless Arorangi lay very close to Zac, he probably wouldn't hear them. Nothing more than a puff of sound that carried to Zac's ears, and maybe it really was a ghost. One haunting him, specifically. Fixated.

Or maybe not. If Zac had known the source of the sighs, he could have taken some pleasure in this, at least: Ever looked almost as exhausted as him.

The Sighing -

It was …awful, when Arorangi didn’t seem to hear the sounds, at least not unless he got really close. He was frustrated enough that he punched the mattress repeatedly until he was so tired that he collapsed against it and the pillow again with a groan.

“I’m so sorry mate, I’d kill to get a good night sleep about now…
He did sleep…eventually, but it was more exhaustion than anything else.

The Little Girl -

One night after Aro spent the night, one damned night, and there was the whisper. The ‘little girl’ voice that chimed in where the sighs should have been, breaking the irreverent silence with her tinny quiet plea and shattering what hope of peaceful sleep that had started to creep in at the edges.

He cursed, an explosive single word that was likely loud enough to have stirred neighbors from their own rest though it was half stifled in his pillow. He grabbed his pillow and blanket and found a corner, far from the bed as he could get and propped the pillow against the wall. It was probably the least comfortable thing he could have done but at least with corners he had a good view of the room, and the illusion of safety granted by the press of two walls, and the light warmth of the blanket that he held between him and the whispers like a shield.

Silent Nights

Was the silence a relief or was it enough to make Zac's blood run cold? Because for two nights there was nothing: not a blip, nor a whisper, nor a sigh, and there was no rhyme or reason for the sudden silence. In truth, it was because Ever had maybe downed a couple too many drinks, was too exhausted himself to stay up and tease, had actual work to do and couldn't simply ******** around in his off hours. But to an amped-up brain, to a panicked newbie, maybe the waiting would become its own kind of torment: when would the voice chime again? Or had it all, really, been in his head?
