He arrived at Maebe's door five minutes later, armed with a rather large bottle of Southern Comfort (stolen from Otto many moons ago), a half empty bottle of Forty Creek Whiskey, and an old looking, well worn box that was labelled as 'Jenga'.

He also had a chess timer tucked into his back pocket, just in case.

The intermediate knocked on the door and waited for her to answer, despite already having an invitation extended over twitter, because he was lame like that.

Despite the shaky situation going on in her personal life, when Maebe opened the door she seemed relatively normal. Her room looked the same, and there were no signs of any issue. This was mainly because he'd given her enough warning to clean up, which she'd spent re-applying makeup expertly to hide puffy eyes, a red nose, and streaks where she'd been crying.

No, Maebe looked just as perfect as ever.

"Come on in." She offered, holding the door out for him with an easy smirk. "You look like you were ready for me. Did somebody tell you that you were going to have to get someone drunk today, or are you just always this well prepared for moments like this?"

Ripley was vaguely aware that something was up; nobody ever announced they needed a distraction for no reason. Distractions implied something was bothering them. All he needed to do was figure out what it was...well, if he even cared to find out to simply satisfy a very mild curiousity.

She looked fine though, the same as always, so perhaps it was just nerves, or boredom?

"The world may never know." Ripley replied dryly, stepping into the room at her invitation. "But here I am. Hope you like whiskey." Stolen and Canadian, in that order, because that was all he had at the moment. Everything else had mysteriously gone missing in the last week, though the empty bottles were still on his shelf.

"Here." He said, handing her the game, and then he reached back to pluck the timer from his pocket, and held that out too. "If you want to make it interesting."

"I like anything that's going to make me forget about the last few days." She responded, honesty evident in her tired voice. "You could have battery fluid and I would have gone for it." Briefly, she wondered if their weapons could save them from dying after drinking battery acid. Thaw informed her that she was not allowed to try, and this did not sate her curiosity in the slightest.

Maebe took the game that was handed to her, and looked carefully at the box. "I played this when I was very little. They had it in school, and my teacher brought games like this in when she wanted kids to just shut up and sit still for a while. It worked." But she eyed the timer, and quirked her head in confusion. "Interesting? I want to make everything interesting. What's the timer got to do with Jenga?"

She upended the box on the floor, after settling down on it herself.

"Ah. Next time, then." He half-warned, partially to test her resolve and partially because in that moment, he was curious to know whether or not the weapon would save them from that particular poison, but wasn't quite stupid enough to drink it himself. "I also don't have glasses. We'll have to be classy."

He took a seat across from Maebe, just outside of the carnage that was fallen blocks.

"Timed Jenga." It was a miraculously helpful answer, because that was the kind of guy he was. "You lose the game if the tower falls on your turn, or if you run out of time before I do." It prevented long pondering turns, and kept the game exciting because there was a timed factor.

"If you're interested, anyway." He hummed, starting to collect some of the blocks to begin stacking them on the floor between them.

Maebe was used to drinking straight from the bottle, when she shared a drink with someone. It reminded her of the night she'd first stayed with-

Her face tightened and she stiffened, as unfamiliar pain washed over her. She tried to classify and compartmentalize it, so that she would remember how much it hurt when she actually tried to love someone, and never make that mistake again. It wasn't working very well; every time she tried to put all the pain into a little box, it overflowed and made her want to crumble on the floor.

Seeing as that wasn't an option around Ripley, she tried to ignore it, instead. Explaining timed Jenga was a helpful distraction, and she focused as hard as she could on the concept. "Oh, so it's more of a race this way. That sounds exciting." She reached out to help stack the Jenga blocks with him. "I'm in."

Quietly, as she stacked, she stole a glance at Ripley and remembered the last time she'd seen him. For the first time that day, she realized that his offer seemed out of place. "Were you bored? Or just needed a drinking partner, too?"

It was subtle, certainly, but one lucky glance up to the woman had him catching the slight way her face pinched, and the way that, if only for a moment, her body tensed.

Curious, indeed.

He knew better than to think she was uncomfortable being alone with him in her room, though he supposed with the way things ended last time that could have been a small chance that was the case. Which meant that something was bothering her, which brought him back to his earlier, mild curiousity over it. Yet he continued to stack the blocks, saying nothing for now.

"Good." He offered only a small smile to her agreement with the whole timed Jenga thing, because it certainly was more fun. But as she asked after him, he glanced up at her from over his glasses.

"Something like that." Was all he gave, save for a noncommittal shrug. He had been bored enough to check twitter, and annoyed enough with Deus to want a drink - her message was just very, very well timed. "I feel less like an alcoholic if someone is drinking with me." He mused, his tone light as if poking fun at himself. Pushing his glasses back up his nose, he leaned back a bit and surveyed the finished Jenga tower.

"Plus, our last meeting ended negatively." He explained, as if that would answer every question about his being here. Despite his nature, he never did like leaving something like that, not without trying to make it better somewhere down the line. Timed Jenga and whiskey was a good way to make amends, or so he thought.

He then picked up the chess timer, and started messing with it to get it set up.

Maebe hadn't thought about their last meeting very much, especially not recently - but reminding her of it had her snorting with amusement. He'd turned her down flatter than she'd ever been turned down before, and it had stung. For a day.

Then she'd gotten over it.

"I wouldn't worry about that too much," She smoothly lied through her teeth. "I mean, sure, you basically crushed my self esteem and all. And it crippled me. And made me think I wasn't worth banging. But, yeah. Jenga and booze. We're totally even."

She gave him a sweet, but over-exaggerated smile. "Maybe one day I'll even think I'm pretty again."

She leaned over and, with one finger, flicked the Jenga block he'd just put up, off to the floor. "Whoops."

Her words, he hated to admit, cut right into him. He knew he was harsh, and cold, and not exactly a comfort to anyone at any time, but not very many people openly admitted it to him, or even used it against him. Typically they just uttered a colourful word or phrase and then left in a huff, usually never to come back unless they had good reason or were particularly stubborn.

Yet there was Maebe, laying out the aftermath of his pretty harsh rejection. One that he was not about to actively apologize for or express regret. He had been harsh, but she had been equally assertive.

"You are a very pretty woman." He conceded the point, though not in a tone that suggested he was trying to compliment her to soothe an ache. It was just something he could express, because it was true. "- And I highly doubt you're so fragile as to hold one man's rejection that close to heart." He glanced at her from under his bangs, and a moment later a small smile formed on his lips.

He watched the jenga block clatter to the ground in silence, and paused for a moment after it had stilled.

"And we haven't even started drinking yet."

As much as Maebe was well aware of the fact, making someone admit it was a highlight in life. She snapped her fingers, and tsked. "You got me. I guess I'll survive." Better than anyone would think, she told herself. She would always be the one to survive.

The reminder that there was alcohol to be drunk made her slowly slink to the floor, inchworming towards the bottle of southern comfort. She grabbed it and unscrewed the top, then sat up again. "Well, that is a mistake I am well qualified to rectify." She informed him, tipping the bottle to her lips and showing her just how ladylike a woman like her could open her throat up and guzzle alcohol.

Answer: Not very ladylike at all.

"I have faith in you." Ripley's eyes rolled slightly, just enough to look away from her and the tower for a moment. Though, seeing a grown woman inchworm towards booze was a sight one couldn't easily pass up, and the moment she was on the ground he was watching her again, his head tilted just slightly. She was...interesting, to say the least.

Then, for a moment, he was further distracted by the impressive sight of her guzzling that southern comfort - something that was by no means a comfortable thing to do. Impressive, yes. Crazy, definitely.

"Well then." He heaved an amused breath, leaning over to pick up the half empty bottle of Forty Creek. "Cheers." He offered belatedly, uncapping it to so something similar, though certainly not to her level. It burned the good burn, and he set it aside, pressing the back of his wrist to his mouth.

"Ah." He hissed, pleased. "Alright then. Let's play?" He set the timer down within reaching distance of them both. "Ladies first."

When Maebe pulled the bottle away from her lips, she hissed at the feel of alcohol tearing down her esophagus, and her eyes fluttered with euphoria. The problem with her and the burn of alcohol was that it was meant to deter people from drinking too much, not promote it.

"Hah," A hoarse voiced breathy little laugh left her throat when he handed her the timer, and she put it down between them and settled in to start the game. "Ripley, if there is one thing that you need to learn about me, it's that I am no lady."

That did not stop her from taking advantage of the offer to go first, and she slammed her hand down on the timer before looking for - and plucking out - the first piece. She put it back on the top, and hit the timer again, setting his in motion.

"First person to lose has to pour a shot into the other one's mouth."

"It's always fun to pretend." Ripley replied to her lady comment without missing a beat, though his eyes were focused on the tower and the block she chose to take. The moment she buzzed in, he moved to systematically find a safe tile to pick out and place on top, slapping his timer to kickstart hers.

"Are we talking an actual shot, or a 'pour until they choke'?" It was an important distinction, because one meant air and the other one didn't, and he was pretty attached to the whole breathing thing. Though now he was wondering if he brought enough booze with him to survive the night with her.

"A regular shot," She almost whined out. "You're not ready for the consequences of making me choke." If he'd been someone else, she might have given him a different answer. But she was still sober, as the alcohol hadn't slid into her system yet, and Ripley was not going to have to deal with her insatiable hunger for suffering.

As soon as the timer popped to her side, she grinned and bent in to look for a piece, touching them all softly with a finger to see if any were loose. The tick of the timer made everything more anxious, and she bit down on her lip until she found one, slapping it away as soon as she felt it move. She picked it up, dropped it on top, and hit the buzzer.

"GOD," She let out as soon as the timer had turned. "Okay, this is kind of fun."

"Just checking." Though he had a moment where he almost - almost - wanted to contest her observation. But alas, he hadn't had nearly enough to drink to do that. "Says you." Okay, so maybe he could, but still. It was a passing comment.

The first block he touched came free, and he was quick to grab it and place it on top, his free hand slapping the timer.

"Isn't it?" He agreed with a delighted grin, loving the way that metronome timer made his heart race. Contests were fun. Timed contests were even better. Jenga was just awesome on its own.

"Loser also has to rebuild the tower." He added, simply because why not.
