The sound of a hammer thudding into a wall didn't wake Kaatje up; point of fact, on this fine and beautiful Saturday, she had already been up since about four. It was nine now, and everyone with sense in the apartment was up, which meant that everyone with sense in the apartment was either working at an actual job, taking care of an amnesiac page, or working on Florence Court. Kaatje herself was drinking coffee after paying the utilities bills for the month, which was more annoying than she'd originally thought, but-- anything for the cause, right?

She considered the possibility of taking a nap, or maybe eating a sandwich, but decided--nah. She wasn't tired, she was just bored, and maybe she'd stop being bored if she just located her little worker bee and bothered him or her. That was part of the benefits of being a landlord, right? Bothering people. At least she would never be lonely. Tallulah had her hands full and so did Finn with their respective purified Negas, so like, couldn't bother them. Who knew where Delphine had gone, but it probably wasn't her on the--she checked her to-do list--second floor, nailing in baseboards. Delphine tended to stick exclusively to patrolling as her form of rent payment. Her roommate, not so much.

Taking her mug with her, she meandered down the stairs. They looked a lot better after the new coat of stain; she reminded herself to high five Nick, even if she was still pissed at him and Tallulah for eloping. Assholes. But he was decent with a paintbrush and he had helped her install five toilets in a single afternoon, so she guessed she would live.

She found her busy little bee in 2-E, exactly where she thought he would be. And exactly who she thought he would be, too. "Hey," she said, leaning against the doorway and sizing up the workmanship. "You're doing great here, buddy, I would have a hard time finding anyone better at installing baseboards, but like, you know patrolling is part of your rent too? Like, unless you and Del want to talk over you taking on her manual labor portion." Which may be what was actually happening, but she didn't have either of them on her one-duty-only roster, like Nick, who helped with construction and doctored people Kaatje thought needed doctoring. But like, Nick froze up any time he was confronted with a Negaverser. It was a serious problem and one that Kaatje didn't have the time to work on now.

"If you're having a Feeling, I can get Nick, he knows what to do with feelings," she offered. "Or like, some coffee? Would that help?"

Kamboja had become aware of the girl before she ever spoke but had foolishly been hoping she would just move along without interrupting him. Zoning out was a lot easier to do when people didn't barge into the middle of it.

He nailed the last section he was working on into place and stood, turning to size up the fiery haired girl judging him so nonchalantly from the doorway. Just from a glimpse, he had to assume this was Kaatje. Delphine had told him enough to recognize her - only because it was important to know who your landlord was. He had generally assumed he could just use the knowledge to avoid her altogether. That didn't work if she came looking for you. At first thought, he just wanted to tell her she wasn't his mother, but that never really went well with the ladies.

"I don't think you'd want Delphine to nail down your baseboards," he opened, but the remark seemed to lack an enthusiasm that should be there. He was all for jokes at his roommate's expense but this was definitely forced, as if he was simply reacting in a socially acceptable manner.

The dark-skinned man used the tail of his beater to wipe the sweat from his forehead, though it was no less saturated itself. With all that weight, he seemed to get sweaty as soon as he stepped out into the summer heat. Just to further avoid having to answer her questions, he reached out for a water bottle and dipped his head back to squeeze it into his mouth. When he sat it down on the overturned box he was using as a table, he glanced up at her - probably hoping she'd just gotten bored and walked away. Was patrolling really that important? Delphine did it enough for the both of them anyway, she had some crazy personal vendetta against chaos and always had since the moment they'd met.

She didn't like his sudden anti-power-up attitude either.

"I don't really want to talk about it, honestly." He set the hammer down next to the water bottle. "But I also can't be Gehenna right now."

Kaatje snorted. "Yeah, okay, she'd probably get spiteful and nail them in all crooked, and then I'd have to kick her a**." Because there was no one on Order side that Kaat couldn't take, totally. Like, Serenity herself would look at the muscle on Kaat's arms and run away crying.

She got the signals that he wanted to be left alone, but she ignored them. Pointless, really, to leave him be when he was clearly compromised. I am an American Airman. I will look after my wingman; I will report emotional disturbance in my wingman. "Okay, we don't have to talk about it," she said, dropping to the ground next to him and offering her coffee mug to him. "Let's talk about something else and if you decide to stop being a whiny pissbaby and talk to me, we can do that too." It was too bad for him that Nick probably was busy being traumatized. Or wait. Maybe he was at work? Why the hell had she offered to get him in the first place, she didn't ******** know.

"What color do you think for the baseboards," she asked. Right now they were unpainted, unstained; off in a corner of the room, a pile of paint cans and staining paraphernalia was stacked against a wall, stark chrome against drywall and stripped wood. "Like, white's always a strong option, but why not go crazy? We could theme apartments after planets, because I'm an a*****e."

There was an undercurrent of do you want to talk interior design or do you want to talk why you're being a lazy buttface and having emotions, but she wasn't sure if she was getting that across adequately. Maybe.

"Just avoid her hands," was his only word of warning, though her threat had earned a small smirk.

One that quickly vanished the moment she referred to him as a whiny pissbaby. He glowered down at the half-full mug of coffee that he suddenly wished he hadn't accepted so gratefully, but had no choice except to take a long sip of the hearty concoction. He was buying time again, trying to avoid giving her any kind of answer. He moved to sit down on an unopened box of something that had been left in the room, avoiding her eyes and listening to her prattle on about something clearly focused on irritating him.

Really? Interior design? He was trying hard to decide what the lesser of two evils was in this instance.

"Alright, alright, enough. I don't care what color the stinking base boards are." He sighed in an open admittance of defeat and stared down into the dark depths of the coffee mug a little longer, as if the universe would give him all the answers he needed in the caffeine. Probably not. He'd need something a lot stronger for that.

Kam's thick fingers drummed a light beat on the side of the mug as he tried to decide the best place to start. Emotions were not his thing. Talking most definitely was not his thing. Delphine herself only got answers when she threatened to beat them out of him.

"I can't control my Squire powers." He was still staring into the mug of coffee, but his eyes looked far away. "Everything goes red. I didn't think much of it at first, but I've been hurting people." He tore his eyes away from the mug of coffee as he broke out of whatever trance had snared him, though shame had clearly risen up in place of the distance.
