Finn's in the field medical training was underway and so far, going smoothly as he contacted a few of his fellow hunters, matching them up as he thought wise, and setting up dates and times for them to spar in an area where their Fear shields could potentially break. As Edith had suggested the beach as a good location, that was where Finn had been telling the white coated guinea pigs to meet.

For this match up in particular, he had trusted Oliver to choose his own sparring partner, knowing that it would likely make things go a little bit smoother in getting the young man to cooperate in the long run. It probably also helped that Finn had bribed him with the promise of junk food and soda, even going so far as to give him some before hand to prove that he was good to his word.

And now, the time had come, and as always, Finn had arrived early to prepare, with sleeves rolled up to his elbows and his weapon standing straight up and down in the ground while the moon intermediate readied his first aid supplies from the infirmary.

And now he just had to wait and hope that Oliver, and whoever he'd asked to join in, actually showed up.

Oliver should have known better, but the snack-deprived teen had been totally blinded by the one thing he desperately needed more of. Not confidence, junk food. Little whispers in the back of his mind were ignored in favour of crunchy, salty bliss, and the sweet, caffeinated drink that had kept him up half the night prior.

He had spent a great deal of time trying to figure out who he should invite, and who he would naturally share the spoils with. Most of the friends he had made on the island were intermediates now, and that would make their fight certainly one-sided. It was only after remembering his new friend Arorangi was still a trainee and promptly sending him a text message that Oliver realized it might still be a one-sided fight. The mist trainee could squish the life out of him in a bear hug without even realizing it.

Oh well, he could still enjoy junk food if he was stuck in the infirmary.

He arrived on the beach slightly early, his nerves already starting to fray. Not just because they would be on the beach, without any barriers, but also because this was the first time these particular friends were meeting. What if Finn was rude? And what if Arorangi didn't like him? It held the potential for confrontation, and Oliver wasn't sure that was worth the food...

By the time he approached Finn, he already looked like he was ready to bolt back to the safety of his dorm room.

Arorangi had gotten the text message and immediately responded with a happy face emote and an enthusiastic sure with lots of exclamation points following. The fact that Oliver was reaching out to him was a good sign, and hopefully meant that the other was starting to branch out, get out of his comfort zone, and do things that he normally wouldn't do.

Or maybe he was just scared and needed help, but either way Arorangi arrived at the beach the last of the trio, his dark, dreadlocked hair twisted up at the back of his head and kept in place by a length of red cloth that was tied around his head. He was wearing a pair of jeans and a red short-sleeved teeshirt, the tattoos all up and down his left arm clearly visible, and, as usual, there was a broad grin on his face as he saw Oliver and his friend up ahead.

"Kia ora, little bird!" he said cheerfully, reaching out to pat Oliver's shoulder in greeting. To the other man, Arorangi stuck out his hand for a shake, smiling widely.

"I am Arorangi! It is nice to meet you!"

He hadn't actually been made to wait too long, though he had checked his phone several times to count the minutes that had passed since he finished preparing all of the medical items he had brought with him, and had taken a seat next to his weapon on the sandy shore.

When Oliver himself arrived, it did not take Finn long to recognize that look in the younger mans gaze that implied that he was ready to bolt. The moon intermediate thought about telling Oliver to sit and relax, but from past experience, he knew that once the life trainee was far from easy to deal with, and bossing him around often just made things worse.

So instead, Finn got to his feet, brushing the sand off of his jacket and legs as he turned to greet Oliver with, "Afternoon Princess! Your payment for coming today is in that bag over there." Finn gestured towards a black, fabric sack that looked like it might have been from a grocery store, which was filled to the brim with various brands of chips, chocolate bars, candies, and pop. "You'll receive it upon completion of the spar."

When in doubt, re-enforce bribery.

Soon after this, another man arrived. A very tall and muscular man with an awful lot of tattoos on his arm. Finn gave him a glance over with his single eye, before reaching out to shake hands with him. "Finn." He replied, with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "A pleasure to meet you. Any friend of the princess is a friend of mine." See? He could be nice....especially when he needed things, and he really needed this spar to happen.

"Okay then, gentlemen. If you'd like to summon your weapons, you can begin whenever you're ready. However, I would just like to stress the importance of being careful out here. The point is to break each others shields if possible, yes, because it is only then that you will sustain an injury with varying degrees of severity, but there is also, of course, a very real risk of death. Trust me, I've seen it happen before." Well, he hadn't, really, but he had gotten a full account of details from when it had happened to Shiloh.

"As an added precaution, I will be defending both of you twice each, in order to charge my weapon. Once it is charged I will sit out the remainder of the spar until it's conclusion and my aid is necessary." He looked from one man to the other, looking for signs that they both understood what he was telling them, and were prepared to take this seriously.

"Also, no Fear charges. If you use a Fear charge I will terminate this exercise immediatley and be very unhappy with you both." That meant no junk food for you, Oliver. None what so ever.

"So, whenever you are ready to begin, you may start, and I will take up my position as defense." Finn turned to wrench his weapon out of the ground, and then proceeded to wait for the other two to get to it.

"H-hi Finn," he replied with a nervous smile. The promise of junk food was apparently enough to keep Oliver in place. It was a larger bag than he anticipated, and although he didn't approach to investigate, he eyed it like a squirrel being offered a peanut. Until Arorangi arrived, he settled for pacing a little ways from the edge of the water. It was impossible for him to sit still.

When Arorangi showed up, Oliver couldn't help but brighten up at the friendly greeting. And brace himself for the back pat. And after several nervous glances between the old friend and the new one, he realized there would be no confrontation and it was safe to relax. Even the mention of his... unfortunate nickname was overlooked.

"Y-yes, no charges," The teen repeated with a hint of trepidation. "Um, y-you are still okay with this?" He asked Arorangi. He wasn't sure if it would be a relief or a disappointment if his friend said no. On one hand, no risk of getting killed. On the other... no food.

He touched the long tooth strung around his neck, and summoned the skeletal axe. taking a step back and holding it at ready. It was as heavy-looking as ever, Oliver had to use a two-handed grip to keep the blade from touching the sand. Jökul's pleased rumble was like a low undercurrent at the back of his mind, a sentient avalanche with the purr of a pleased cat.

Finn wasn't like anyone he'd seen yet on the island; the eyepatch made Arorangi curious, but he wasn't about to ask about it (that was just rude okay). He shook the man's hand firmly, raising his eyebrows a little. "Princess?" he repeated, with a sideways glance at Oliver. The nickname was a little strange to him, maybe even demeaning, but Arorangi let it go, unwilling to cause any strife between Oliver and his friend.

"Gotcha," he said with a nod after the instructions had been doled out. Arorangi lifted a hand, rubbing at the back of his neck, and then gave Oliver a bright smile, reaching to clap his shoulder and give it a reassuring squeeze that would hopefully alleviate some of the anxious look clearly evident on his face.

"I am good with this," said Arorangi cheerfully. "Let us begin the fight!"

Oliver had already summoned his weapon; an enormous axe that made Arorangi let out a low, impressed whistle. "That is a nice looking weapon, little bird!" he said, eyes raking the blades of it. "It looks very powerful, mate, I am not so sure how my little spear will compare!"

The spear in question was already summoned, and Arorangi spun it around between his hands before readjusting his stance. He gave a nod to Oliver, making sure they were both ready, and then lunged forward, swinging the spear around in a wide arc as he aimed for Oliver's torso.

Content with knowledge that both man understood, quite clearly, the risk that they were both taking by sparring outside of the safe zone. His weapon in hand, he waited for them to figure out just who was going to draw first blood, so to speak.

For a large sized man, this Arorangi fellow moved quite fast, his spear practically a blur as he struck out at Oliver. As soon as he moved, so did Finn, spinning his weapon in his grip once before he was pointing it at Oliver, putting himself nearly in between the two.

"Sorry, princess. You'll have to get through me first." He informed him, while giving Aro some defence that was likely not needed but entirely necessary for Finn to get his weapon charged.

There was very little time for Oliver to act bashful. The fight started, and he felt a moment of panic watching the large trainee lunge towards him. That spear was fast, so much so that the size of his own axe was nothing but a hindrance. He couldn't lift it fast enough to block, nor could he leap out of the way carrying such a weight. For a second he looked absolutely terrified.

The long cut across his midsection seemed to have an unexpected effect on the boy, instead of looking more terrified, the pain seemed to bring him to his senses. Taking advantage of having just been attacked, Oliver used the momentum from his ineffective dodge to get the axe moving. It would have been a fierce downward swing had Finn not suddenly jumped in between him and his target.

"Finn!" Oliver exclaimed, jerking backwards and pulling the blow. Even though he knew it was coming, Finn's interception and blocking, it was still enough to startle the kid, and almost ended with the blade buried in the sand. Oliver was only just barely able to maintain it's momentum.

With Finn blocking his every move, the large, oddly shaped lance appearing in a blur of white and magenta, it was clear that Oliver was going to have some difficulties getting a proper shot in. Arorangi had enough time to smash the spear towards Oliver and leap backwards before Finn had intervened, spraying sand.

"A good defense," said Arorangi lightly with a glance at Finn. "Are you in the Moon Division, mate?"

They were the ones that defended, right? Arorangi looked back at Finn, gave a small nod, and lunged forward again, twisting the spear around so that he could aim for Oliver's left side this time, the weapon whistling through the air. He felt a little bad for going this hard so fast, but it was important to learn these techniques, wasn't it?

"Yes?" Finn asked Oliver mildly, while a slow smirk began to spread across his face. "Look, I told you I needed to charge my weapon! You'll get your turn for some protection soon enough." His lance had managed to block Oliver's axe on the first go with a jarring clatter that sent vibrations all the way up to Finn's shoulder. Adjusting his grip, he readied himself for when the younger man's weapon might come crashing down on him again.

A quick side glance to Aro (luckily he wasn't on Finn's blind side) and Finn gave him a nod in return. "Yes, I am." He had left his jacket folded up off to one side, however, not wanting to get it dirty over a spar of all things.

"It's really dangerous!" Oliver yelped, letting the weight of his axe swing pull him back a step. It didn't stop Arorangi's spear from laying another slice across the other side of his ribs, but he took less damage. Sand slid under his shoes and nearly let the axe momentum take him down.

"Don't just jump in like that! You could get hurt!" Again, Oliver was missing the point completely, but his distress suddenly sharpened into something else the minute he thought of someone defending him instead of his opponent. "I don't want your defence!" He shouted almost angrily. Perhaps it was better than tears, but it was not like him to say something so reckless.

The axe swing had reached the 'right place' in it's rotation. Jökul had pointed it out once, a cryptic rumble about altering the flow, and the boy was starting to get the feel for it. There was a time for guiding the weapon and a time for applying force. And as it neared the two hunters, Oliver stepped forward and put his strength into a wide, horizontal slash.

"The Moon hunters are a good division," said Arorangi, flipping the spear from his right hand to his dominant left hand. "I have done a bit of research on each of the divisions, and I have enjoyed learning about each one for my own purposes."

Oliver seemed almost too small for such a large weapon, and as it swung towards him, it cut a wide, horizontal arc through the air. Arorangi leapt backwards with a shout of laughter, the blade catching on his shirt and cutting a line across his stomach. He didn't seem too perturbed, however, Arorangi straightening, a grin on his face.

"See?" he told Oliver. "I knew you were strong enough."

He spun the spear and thrust it towards Oliver's leg.

"It's also my job." Finn growled back to Oliver, one hundred percent done with any argument the young man might have to state otherwise. Obviously feeling a bit annoyed with the way Oliver was going on about it, and distracted in the aftermath, he was not able to stave off the full power of the other man's swing, and with a light grunt, spun to the side, watching as it grazed Arorangi.

He stayed for the side for a moment longer, lance still held in a double grip, waiting for a good moment to jump back in. Aro was about to attack again, and Finn probably should have stepped in to do something about it, but he decided to let that one go, perhaps partially because of Oliver's words.

"And you also don't have a ******** choice, princess." He still needed another hit on his weapon before it would be ready to go, and besides, this was good battle practice in something that Finn was meant to be good at.

"It's suited me well enough so far, I suppose." He replied to Arorangi with a shrug, now pivoting himself back into the fray, this time with Oliver at his side, facing Arorangi, waiting for the large, tanned man to attack again, before putting himself in the way.

Oliver wanted to tell Finn to save his 'job' for hunters who had a shot at survival, but instead he clenched his teeth and let the comment go. Those thoughts were still present and stung with shame, but he had buried most of them to avoid too much attention.

The boy felt particularly strongly about his desire to hide those thoughts from Arorangi. Between his certainty of death and the Mist trainee's unstoppable optimism, what would happen? Arorangi held such a high opinion of Oliver's strength, he could only imagine the disappointment when his flaws were discovered.

Jökul murmured disapproval, reminding Oliver to stay on track. This was not the time or place for ruminating over his own death, or he would meet it even sooner than expected. And that would both hurt Finn's training, and put a dent in Arorangi's optimism...

"Did you know how to fight before the island?" Oliver asked, letting the previous slash swing wide. Before it's weight could pull him around, Oliver directed it's momentum upwards, and brought it down in a gravity-assisted attack.

Did the pair of them always squabble like this? Arorangi was somewhat surprised with the sort of person that Oliver chose to keep company with. The nickname alone - girlish and indicative of a lack of experience - was bad enough, but now it seemed that Oliver seemed slightly wary of Finn, maybe more so than he gave off.

Oliver wasn't crying, though, or looking shy, which Arorangi took to be a good sign. He gave the younger man a questioning look, eyebrows raised, but said nothing at all, merely smiled reassuringly as the axe swung towards him again. The heavy weight of the blade caught him by the shoulder, Arorangi stumbling, and he regained his footing quickly, skirting to the side.

"I did a bit of fighting here and there," he said with a small laugh. "The haka, of course. But other than that, nothing too extravagant."
