Xanatos Serdear hated his mother. He hated a lot of things, but he especially hated his mother. He had never known his father, and Kali had never told him anything about the male who sired her first brood of children. He knew he had sisters, the same way he knew he had a father. His mother had alluded to the fact without giving him any more information. When he had been a kitten, he had been curious. There had been no concern or longing to know his family. No, he had simply been curious why Kali had chosen to keep him when she didn’t seem to care what had happened to the other two baskets she had abandoned. Asking had always led to a swipe from her that left him bleeding. He had learned not to question his mother, just as he had learned to hate her. Throughout his kittenhood, he had been beaten and trained by the older skinwalker. Trained for what, he didn’t know.
Today, he was in his feral form, hiding in the branches of a tree, scarcely daring to breathe. Kali had given him ten minutes to hide. The idea had been that he was to find and stalk her, then “kill” her. Obviously she didn’t expect him to actually kill her, but he was supposed to try. All the while, he had to avoid being “killed” by her. When he was younger, he had thought this a game, now he knew it for the torture it was.
Kali always won.

From another tree, Kali watched her, rather disappointing, prodigy. When she had first spawned the annoying little balls of fluff, she had had such great plans. She had chosen one rather at random and had planned on training a mini-her, a child to be as vicious and bloodthirsty as she was. Well, the male was certainly that... but he was disappointingly dull. Case in point, as many times as she had put him through this particular exercise, he always hid in the same tree and expected different results. And he was surprised every time she eviscerated him.

A rustle caught Xanatos' attention. He tensed, his tail flicking as he peered through the leaves, watching, waiting for Kali to reveal herself. This time he would beat her. For once, he would draw her blood. He couldn't wait, his fur stood on end from the pure anticipation of raking his claws through her flesh and hearing her scream in surrender. Oh, he wouldn't stop then, oh no. He'd kill her for real. A soft growl of excitement escaped.

Kali watched the younger skinwalker tense, his attention focused on... something. A slight flick of her ear, and she could hear the heartbeat of a small creature on the ground in front of him. She spared a moment to hope that he realized it wasn't her. And then she dismissed it, realizing her offspring couldn't be that smart. He had yet to display anything even remotely resembling that level of intelligence. She heaved a soft sigh of disgust.

Something, a small sound, a sigh of wind, a slow waking instinct caught his attention. The sound could have been the wind. Was probably the wind. He shook his head slightly, trying to keep his attention on the rustling leaves. The rustling leaves that he KNEW was Kali. The rustling leaves that would lead him into his first victory and, if he was fast and vicious enough, the end of these painful games. But still, that instinct kept nagging at the back of his mind. Something wasn’t right. Something about that sound. It had to have been the wind, right? Of course. His prey was in front of him, not behind him. Why would she be in a tree? There was no way she could have found him again, not so soon. No, that little voice needed to back off and shut up. He growled softly, his tail flicking back and forth angrily.

Back and forth, back and forth went the tail. Something had upset the kitten. Kali tilted her head slightly, wondering idly if he'd figured out his mistake yet. She decided she would give him a few more moments, and then... Oh, he was about to do something...

His muscles tensed and bunched and then… He pounced, landing in the bushes with a louder rustle than before, and a dull thud. There was a startled squeak and his reflexes kicked in. He snapped, his powerful jaws closing around a small, fuzzy form. His fangs pierced flesh and the tantalizing taste of blood and meat filled his mouth. He prepared for retaliation, but felt no pain. The pulse beating rapidly under his mouth slowed and then stopped completely when he shook his head sharply. He let out a triumphant snarl, dropping his prize as he did so. Finally! Victory was his!

Kali watched as the younger skinwalker ripped viciously into a rabbit and killed it. She shook her head a bit, annoyed at how messy he was. Really. He should be full grown by now. Was it really necessary for him to get blood all over himself?

Xanatos finished devouring the creature, realizing only as he swallowed the last mouthful that it had been far too small to be Kali. He shook his head sharply then quickly scrambled up into the tree that he had been hiding in. Stupid! Now he had the scent of blood all over himself! There was no way she was going to miss that. She’d be able to find him in his clever hiding place! Once he was on his branch, he began to groom himself furiously, trying to lick up every last delicious, traitorous drop of blood. For a moment, he considered laying a false trail and leading the older skinwalker into a trap, but he quickly dismissed that idea. He didn’t have the time for it, he was sure. The game had gone on for nearly an hour already, which was the longest the game had ever dragged on. Usually, Kali found him and ripped into him much sooner than this. He, of course, took that to mean that he was getting better at playing, not that Kali was feeling more patient today than she had in the past.

The very patience that he wasn't aware of wore out right about then. She could see what he was doing, and it irritated her that he thought he could clean up the blood and think she wouldn't find him. With a snarl, she sprung from her perch in her tree and landed suddenly on his branch. Without pausing to allow him time to see what was happening, she flashed out with a claw and dragged the sharp blades through his side, drawing blood.

He hissed as the all too familiar pain rippled through him. He fell out of the tree, landing on the ground with a sharp thump. The cuts weren’t too deep. He was bleeding, yes, but Kali hadn’t been trying to kill him, just teach him a lesson as she always was. What that lesson was, he hadn’t yet figured out. What he did know was that she had drawn first blood, and by the rules of her stupid game, that meant she had won.

Kali lunged toward him, planning on pinning him to the ground. She preferred to tender her lecture when he was in a position of complete submission. She knew, of course, that he hated the position, but she didn’t care. No, that wasn’t true. If he had enjoyed being pinned, she wouldn’t do it to him. Then again, if he was so weak as to enjoy being dominated, she would have killed him before he had grown this large.

Xanatos knew what was coming, and he hated it with a passion. In the past, he had always fought the humiliation. Now would be no different. Xanato’s instincts may not have been the best, and sometimes he was even willing to admit that to himself if not to anyone else. However, those less than reliable instincts told him that if he didn’t find Kali, she would stop playing with him. He hated his mother with an unabiding passion, but, when he was in pain and bleeding, he knew that there was very little keeping him alive. The second she lost interest in him, she’d kill him. So, he tried to dodge her, to avoid letting her claws sink into him again.

A soft chuckle escaped Kali as he tried to dodge her attack. She smirked. “Run, kitten,” she purred. This wasn’t an uncommon end to their game. Often times, attacking Xanatos would get Kali’s blood up. When he dodged like that, like he actually had a chance to escape her, she felt the overwhelming desire to chase him down. It was a fine reward, she thought, for winning the game.
