Claude couldn't help but look perplexed as she left the cove, staring down at the ruby ring on her finger that had once previously been a weapon. One that talked none the less. One that was apparently occupying her brain right this moment and could hear everything she was thinking.
Oh...that wasn't invasive, no, not at all.
She wasn't paying too close attention to where she was walking, but eventually to stilled and came to a stop. Claude finally managed to tear her eyes away from the ring and stared up and around her.
Damn.
What was this place exactly? She was feeling, admittedly, a bit overwhelmed at the moment, and wondered exactly what she had signed up for---
That's right.
Luckily, there were many other people in white coats, some who were giving her odd looks, she supposed from her lack of coat and bed head...well okay. She looked like a hot mess right now, but it was really the least of her concerns. "Hey--" She started, trying to get someone's attention. "I'm looking for someone--"

It was time for Lex's much needed break; 10 hours in the infirmary, 2 hours of deciphering old text from some crypt in the Baltic sea, then he had an hour of general studies and another hour of attempting to contact some university or another for their online correspondence programs, which ended in a simple email and no response. He needed a nap, some coffee, granola - maybe even a slice of cake.
He thought the exhaustion was causing him to hallucinate when he first heard the feminine voice. No, that wasn't her. It was just some new trainee that needed help. Someone else would find her, help her along to her dorm or wherever she needed to go. Certainly it wasn't Claude. He'd continue to the mess hall, grab his food, then get back to the labs.
Slice of cake indeed in hand (held daintily with a napkin, of course. He wouldn't dare get his coat dirty), he still heard her voice. Still sounded like Claudia. It couldn't be her - she was back in Vegas, living the high life. No way it was her.
Sighing, he decided to help this mystery person that sounded a lot like his step sister. He finished the cake and went to the source of the voice, black boots clacking as they touched pavement.
"Hi, what do you-" Lex began, then very nearly choked. He had to be hallucinating. This wasn't real. Abort mission. Go home, get some sleep, try talking to Ami about decreasing his work load. "C-claudia?!"

It was like a sea of people in white. Many weren't paying attention, and those that stopped long enough had no idea who she was inquiring about. She felt her hope start to dwindle the more time went by with little to no answers. Please say she hadn't come out here for nothing. Please say that her princess step brother wasn't in another castle island. Claude ran a hand through her long and disheveled hair and released a loud breath. The hand in her hair stilled though as a voice spoke up above the chattering. A voice that was very familiar, and a voice she wasn't sure she'd ever hear again. Claude slowly turned towards the source, and she saw him, and her eyes widened as her lips parted. There he was. Alive. She didn't blink. She didn't breathe. She just held still, like if she did something to disturb this moment it'd be over and he'd disappear again. She needed to breathe though, and it was a growl that got her going again. " You b*****d..." She seethed.

Going home sounded like a great idea, actually. Even if Ami was perpetually angry with him, or at least somewhat irked by his presence. They really were like a cat and dog living in the same pen. Claudia was fuming, he could tell. Her whole body said she wanted nothing more than to scream at him, tear him apart, then sew him back together to do it all over again.
He'd only seen Claud mad a few times in their years as step siblings, usually when Lex had either ignored her or come home stupidly drunk. This was probably case A, a large two year span of ignoring her. That was quite a bit of pent up anger, a long fermentation period.
"...Claudia...." He started slowly, backing away slightly. Those arms were volley ball arms, honed and made of steel nearly. His face in punching range was not something he needed at the moment.

Claude never did entertain thoughts of if/when she found him. That just seemed like she'd set herself up for disappointment. She did imagine though, that hopefully, she'd feel relief. Happiness. Joy. Maybe later. Not right now. This was a long time coming made up of loss, loneliness, pain, and anger. " Two years, Alexei." She continued to seethe, her hand dropping from her hair as her fists clenched, and she stalked towards the step sibling she considered to be her only real family. " Two ******** years without a warning, without contact, and without closure because of a ******** fake funeral."

"Watch your tongue." He reflexively quipped back, before remembering that they weren't at his mother's house any more and Claude was free to swear as she liked. Yeesh, she had grown too... and was dressed like a pirate. Where the hell had they picked her up at? Atlantis? Well... that wasn't too far of a stretch. She would have gone to Reno a few times...
Right, angry step sister that was now balling her hands in to fists. This was very much not good. Oh? Fake funeral? How had she figured that one out? "Well I can't really call you from the Island, you know." He defended, crossing his arms. "Not to mention I was given maybe an hour to get my things from my apartment. Also, I would never involve you in this place."
In fact... "Claude, what in God's name are you doing here? The shadows never bothered you much, did they? I thought I received the brunt of it..." Lex's face turned into a somewhat confused glare, pursed lips and furrowed brow. "Unless you never spoke to me of what they were really doing."

"Don't tell me to watch it!" She sneered, and her fists clenched tighter before she stopped, splaying out her fingers before clenching them lightly and flexing them again. She looked less than impressed, and even more angry about his quip about a call. " No, Lex, I didn't know." A pause. " I didn't know anything." She punctuated that statement with a glare. That was wrong. She should have known, and there was no good excuse he could give about keeping her in the dark. "I came here looking for you, Lex." She hissed, insulted that there could be any other reason. Yeah, the shadows were unsettling, but that wasn't what drove her here. "You're my brother, but I see how much you care about your sister." Low blow, low blow.

Lex was about to say something, a rebuttal that hid his actual hurt from Claudia's incredibly low emotional kick to the groin, but then he caught sight of a few Hunters in the area staring at them, some even beginning to write things down.
"Claudia, dearest, could you please come with me." Lex practically ordered, his tone sweet but underlining a sense of demand. They couldn't do this in public. Lex's reputation would be sent sinking, and Claude's... well, s**t. She had none yet, but he didn't want her to start off with a bad one. She couldn't escape, either. This wasn't a day camp where she could just leave after a while. The damn idiot had followed him, and now she was stuck here.
Damn this whole situation.
He grabbed his tall sister by the wrist, practically dragging her to his old dorm room, still empty considering he was technically assigned to it for all intents and purposes. Lex's bed would hold Claudia's bottom while he took the chair at his dinky desk and ran fingers through his long hair.
"Okay, start from the beginning. How did you know I wasn't dead." Lex asked, looking into her shockingly similar grey eyes, except that hers weren't on the verge of tears. Claude... you damned fool. You stupid, stupid girl.

She knew that was a low blow. An awful one. She was hurt though. The one other person she felt closest to, real family, had for all intents and purpose, had left her behind. "Oh, now you want to take me with you." Another one, damn it! She knew she shouldn't, but she couldn't help it. Claude was still, blissfully, unaware of how the Island worked, so really anyone around wasn't even on her radar at the moment. Claude let Lex grab her, and was dragged on after him, glaring at the back of his head. Upon arriving at a rather vacant room, Claude sat on the bed for only a moment before she was back on her feet. "Damn it, Lex, I just woke up! I don't need to be back down again." She muttered, before huffing, and crossed her arms. She shot him another glare. Oh. She was ready to give him story alright. "Oh, you know, after you disappeared and didn't tell me and left me alone, a police officer shows up and is--" Her tone went heavily sarcastic "Sorry to inform us that Alexei Jamil was in a horrible motorcycle accident. So bad, in fact, there was no need to come down to the morgue and identify ground beef." All the sarcasm. "So the funeral has to be a closed casket--so convenient--your mom is hysterical and dad is distraught for the sake of your mom . How wonderful." She sneered. "I didn't buy it though. You're too careful. You wear all the gear and you drive safely." She paused. "But during the whole arrangement, I checked. That casket was empty."

Lex had to roll his eyes at her protesting to just sit down for a while. She'd learn soon. Hunters took breaks when they had to, reveled in getting to sit down and do nothing. Sleep was a treasured substance that, if possible, could even be used as currency.
Lex squinted as Claude regaled him with her brief version of how his 'death' had been delivered to his family. Wow, they really couldn't come up with a better story? Suicide would have been better, or simply just a missing persons report. Lex had to let out a little snort of laughter at the last part. Of course Claudia had checked the casket - damn girl was always snooping around trying, sticking her nose right in the heart of trouble.
"Okay, so you're angry I didn't take you here with me, or at least tell you I was planning on this." His voice was calmer now, relaxed slightly. Lex could handle this, manipulate her into his side of things. "Claudia, you know I didn't have time to do either of those things. The same happened with you in your recruitment - the recruiter came, gave you an hour to grab anything that would fit in one duffel, and you were whisked away into a pod." He stopped there, fiddling with a sleeve. He kept his tone calm, neutral. A little hint of worry seeped through his words though.
"Claudia, you shouldn't have come. It's dangerous here."

"I will roll your eyes right out of your head, Lex-- Damn right I'm angry." Having been able to vent out a majority of her frustration though, Claude was calming down as well, from boiling to a nice simmering. She snorted softly, shifted her weight from one foot to the other. "Yeah, it did, but you know what, Lex? There was time in the moments before that. The moments leading up to that decision." She uncrossed her arms then, and spread them out in a 'come at me' gesture. "Does it look like I care if it's dangerous or not? I found you, Lex. I can ******** die peacefully now."

Lex shook his head, standing now and leaning his weight against the back of the chair through his arms and making small 'tsks' as she continued to yammer. Claude was always the rash sibling, the one who made impulse choices regardless of safety. Really, his step sister was more the one to die in a motorcycle crash. Lex cleared his throat, drumming fingers along the back of the chair.
"It was a decision I made in the moment, Claudia. I was sick of the shadows crawling around in Mom's clubs, sick of living a life that didn't have purpose other than to make her money. I wanted to make something of myself, be something greater." Lex explained away, meeting her eyes. "I didn't want you involved in this - you have promise, kid. You're actually somebody that can go places in life - yet you wasted it to find me."
A deep sigh rumbled from Lex's chest, his gaze falling on the golden ring on his finger. "You're not dying." Lex stated, ordered even. This wasn't how it was meant to be. She was supposed to take over mom's little kingdom of clubs, or get the hell out of Dodge and do something great in one of the big cities. Claudia was ambitious, tenacious, willing to go far to achieve her means. She'd make a great Hunter, and that's what Lex was the most scared of.
Claudia could very easily put herself in a position as a massive target.

At this point, it was beating a dead horse. She was still mad about the rash decision, and he was going to stand by his rash decision despite how mad it made her. "Don't call me 'kid', and you don't get to parade around and make decisions about my life, Lex, and <******** you. It wasn't a waste." She crossed her arms again and blew some stray whisps of hair out of her face as she stared back at him. "Because that's exactly what you wanted me to do with my life, right? Go on, get through college. Have the family except my brother be there at my graduation. Move on. Get married. Look into the crowd and see mom and dad, and the empty chair that was saved for you in memory. Have a kid. Tell them about the uncle they'll never meet because I don't know what happened to him. Be on my death bed, and <******** regret that I couldn't share my what went on in my life with him and that I didn't find out what happened." A pause. "Oh yeah, ******** life I would have had." She cocked a brow. "And if the roles were switched, you would have just gone on happily living too, right?"

Lex was exasperated already with his younger step sibling. Yes, Lex understood that she'd been left in the dark about the situation. Claude had always clung to him tightly, even though they weren't blood related. When mom had finally settled down on another man (some big wig in a water supply corporation), Claude had been introduced to him as "his new little sister." Lex hadn't had a younger sibling before, the only child or Mrs. and Mr. Jamil - so how could he possible have a 'new' one? Lex had been indifferent - he was a surly teen, after all - but ended up warming up to the girl.
Then Lex went to college, managed his mother's clubs, yadda yadda. The history didn't need repeating. Lex instead stared Claudia down, shaking his head slowly. "Yes, Claude. You were supposed to do all those things and I wasn't supposed to be there." Lex sighed, taking his steel eyes off her for a few moments. She'd never been the type to just let go. She formed bonds far more easily than he did. He shouldn't have expected her to be able to let go of her older brother.
"Look, it was selfish of me. I forget that you... care." Lex breathed, giving in. She would be angry, and he couldn't change it. "I cared for you too, and that's why I didn't tell you about this. I didn't want you to put your life on the line." His gaze hardened, steeled over. "It may not have been my call, you risking your life, but I made it."
Lex seemed to make a lot of those calls.

She knew he was exasperated, but she didn't care. He didn't have to sit through a fake funeral. He didn't have to sit and wonder for two years. "If you honestly thought I would, then you don't know me at all." The biting, heated edge had left her tone, and it was starting to sound more like how she usually was. Calm, collected and cool. Claude also seemed more agreeable as Lex finally relented and acknowledge her anger, though when he spoke about forgetting that she cared, something flashed, briefly in Claude's eyes. Hurt, maybe. It came and went though, and her eyes drifted to the side, out the window for a moment before she looked back at him, releasing a sigh. "It's not your call." She reminded him. "It never was. It never will be. Poetic justice for your decision is me standing before you know." Claude replied matter of factly. "You can't change it. Here I am. I'm not going anywhere now, so you can b***h and moan about me 'not supposed to be here' all you want. You're just going to have to deal with it."
