It had been a long day for Pembroke and the rest of the herd. What had started out as a nice day had quickly turned into scariest and most unpleasant of experiences of his short life. Even now he could feel his body shake now and then from fear, and hear the sounds the larger hoof beats at the edge of the spot where the herd was clustered. His family had been a huge help in keeping Pembroke and his siblings calm and quiet. They had each taken turns soothing the foals, giving them encouragement or simply just standing there with them - whatever they needed, they got. But now Pembroke was exhausted, it had been a long day and while the sun was still high in the sky he was ready to drop.

Lifting his head he nosed at his mothers should to get her attention. "Mother I'm tired." He told her in a soft voice, still worried that if he spoke too loudly the scary bigger Soquili might yell at him. Or even worse see through on their threat to throw him and the other foals to the condors. Normally he could make it through a full day without being exhausted until right before the sun set, occasionally through he would have a more rambunctious day and require a short mid-day nap to see him through the rest of the way. Today, right now he felt like he could sleep until the sun came up tomorrow morning. The stress and fear had certainly taken it's told on the colt but as tired as he was he could not bring himself to sleep here, out in the open, while monsters circled around.

If there ever was a day where the herd was being tested then today was that day. It had been tough to deal with, after all their lives up until now were fun of peace, never having much of a care in the world. Now they were all cowed into being silent and doing what they were told. So far though the only thing that was demanded of them was that they do what the Spider Queen said, which consisted of staying where they were. It wasn't easy of course, there were many questions left unanswered - and unspoken. The time since they were captured was spent making sure everyone remained together, easy enough when those larger beasts continued to circle around them. At least they had each other and took turns watching over all the foals, not that they went anywhere, but having such an extended family to lean on in a time like this was truly a blessing. Whisper had made sure everyone was eating while they were stuck here, they had no water, which would be a problem at some point, but for now they could at least eat and keep their strength up.

At Pembroke's nudging the small pale mare looked down at her son. She couldn't help but nuzzle him when he spoke of being tired. "I know you are." Her gaze lifted for a moment to spot where her other children were, they all looked exhausted. She was certain that even Syrrin's children would be feeling the effects of it now. But she could tell Pembroke didn't want to sleep out here, she couldn't blame him for that. Glancing around she watched the large Soquili that were guarding them shift around, making sure there were no opportunities left open for escape. Shaking her head she turned her attention back to Pembroke. "You stay here with your father, I will be right back." Her son's eyes opened wide. "Do not worry." She said and gave him another reassuring nuzzle before turning and walking to the edge of the group. She didn't see the Spider Queen nearby but she did see the other mare, who from the sounds of it was the Spider Queen's daughter, standing not far away. Taking a deep breath Whisper walked over to the mare. "I need to speak with you a moment." She hoped the mare would be reasonable.

Blossom was exhausted, it had been a long day or at least it felt like a long day. Although the sun had yet to set and she typically didn't fall asleep until dark fell the events of the day had simply worn her down and she couldn't quite stop the yawns that overcame her. She had been standing with Synder who had been trying to keep her occupied but even the older foal was tired and sluggish. "I'm tired." She told her cousin with another yawn.

She was tempted to just lay down and sleep right where she was but Blossom knew that if she did it wouldn't be a restful sleep, she would be far to worried and fretful to get a good nights sleep out here in the open surrounded by the vicious monsters who held them prisoner. "I want to go home." She told Synder tearfully and by home she meant the nice sheltered grove that she and her family typically slept in.

"I know, I am too." Synder told Blossom, giving the younger foal a soft nuzzle, it was almost hard to remember the mornings fun, then she had been a normal foal, romping and playing with her cousins without a care in the world - until that nasty traitor mare had shown up and tricked them all. She had ruined everything and Synder was bound and determined to get her back for it someday.

But..probably not today - or anytime in the near future, right now she had to help her family in a different manner, by helping to take care and watch over her cousins. "I don't know if they will let us sleep there tonight." She told Blossom truthfully, her eyes following Whisper as she suddenly broke ranks to walk towards one of the scarier creatures watching over them.

Syphax was surprised when one of the little ones approached her - she had thought the majority of them thoroughly cowed and put in their places. For a few seconds she considered merely chasing the mare back to the herd and fixed her with a stern multi-eyed look, tail flicking at the slight annoyance. The spider with her caught on to her annoyance and drummed it's legs in agitation, hissing at the mare who approached in a threatening manner.

Syphax almost...almost let the spider go ahead and bite the mare , but that would case more problems then it would likely solve and her mother had been resolute in her command to keep the tiny soquili well - dead or dying hostage held little value after all and so she crooned the spider a soothing tone and decided to humor the tiny mare. "Speak then and perhaps I will listen." She told the mare, looking down at her from the greater height her stature provided. It was likely that the mare would have some ridiculous request and Sypha would simply send her back to the herd with a stern word about wasting her time but she would let her ask, this time.

Pembroke had no choice but to do as his mother said. He couldn't help but feel shocked and a little scared when she began to walk towards one of the scary looking mares. What was his mother doing? Didn't she know that mare was dangerous? The colt stood still, only a few inches away from his father. It was then that he looked for his sister Blossom. It only took him a moment to see her standing a short distance away with their cousin Synder. Synder wasn't normally one they would spend time with, as the older foal was more rambunctious than they were, but he had to admit Synder was being good now and it seemed that she keeping his sister safe and happy.

When he caught his sisters eye he gave her a look that said 'What is mom up to?' and then glanced to where their mother now stood talking to one of the mares. He couldn't quite hear what was being said, but he was nervous. That mare was scary, that mare had spiders on her who didn't seem nice at all and his mother had boldly walked up to her and was not talking with her. He hoped everything would be okay but he couldn't figure out why she went over to that mare. Only time would tell and so the colt could only stand their and wait to see what would happen.

Whisper felt a bit intimidated by the larger mare, and her spider. Normally she had no issue talking to the larger breeds of Soquili whenever she was out of the herd lands, but this one, long with the others, had proved that they were not open to anything except what they wished to do. Well, even so, she had her children to consider and Syrrin's for that matter and so when the mare told her to speak she did so, and made herself sound as confident as she could.

"We have done everything your Spider Queen has asked of us so far and will continue to do so." She began, hoping that would help to catch the mares full attention. "We do not wish to go against any of her or your orders. However I have my children and the other foals in the herd to care for. They are tired and require a quite and safe place to sleep. I want to take them to our grove just over there," she motioned with her muzzle "so that they can get the rest they require. Come with us if you must to ensure we do not escape. They simply require their home to sleep. Surely you can understand this, and once they are rested we can return here to the others." It was not a large demand of the mare, but Whisper wasn't sure if she would accept this. Surely the larger mare would understand that keeping the foals safe and secure was important, not only to the herd but their captors as well, and so should agree to this in order to keep the herd happy and in condition to be used as ransom against Mercy.

"but why not." Blossom asked, her lips trembling slightly - she was so tired and she couldn't understand why they couldn't just go home to sleep. In fact there was a great deal she didn't understand , like why these monsters had shown up in the first place and why they wanted to keep the whole herd just standing here doing nothing and why wouldn't anyone tell her what was actually going on?

It was confusing..and terrible and in Blossoms overly tired mind a more then adequate excuse to just have a complete meltdown. she started to sniffle and tremble. "I..I..I want to go hooome!" She all but wailed in her tiny foalish voice, throwing herself on her side on the ground and kicking her hooves in a tiny foal tantrum - which was considerably unlike her. Normally Blossom was pretty easy going and well behaved..but everyone has their limits and today had pushed Blossom well past hers.

Oh deer dung...Synder thought to herself as she spotted all the tell tale signs of impending doom in Blossoms voice. "I..I mean they might, I don't know..maybe that what your mom is asking them." Synder tried to placate the foal before she completely broke down but it was far to late and Synder looked around nervously as the foal thrashed around in a tantrum at her feet. What was she going to do now?!?

Synder might be older then her cousins and she might try to put on airs and be the big foal of the lot..but she was still young herself and Blossoms tantrum was well above and beyond her ability to deal with. "Help!" She wailed at the nearby adults "I don't know what to do!" She blubbered on the verge of her own panicky meltdown

Syphax was on the verge of telling the mare to have the foals suck it up and sleep out here with the others, I mean really why couldn't they...when one of the foals appeared to have some sort of spastic melt down. Syphax was stunned..what type of training did they creatures have? Never in all her life had she acted so incredibly..childish, not even as a foal! Her mother probably would have killed her if she had.

"Your foals are ill behaved miscreants." She told the mare somewhat angrily,as the foals screaming was sure to draw her mothers attention and then Syphax would have to explain the entire situation and likely get lectured for not dealing with it faster. Drat the brats. "You may take half the foals and allow them to rest, when they have done so trade them for the remaining half." She finally snarled at the mare. "I will send guards..do not even think about trying to escape, my mother won't mind a few dead hostages in that case." She warned, though she was sure the mare would be unwilling to leave half the foals behind and as such would not consider running. Besides she would have some guards and condors watch over them.

"And for all that's sensible please quiet that screaming one!" she further demanded. "Clearly she needs proper training."

Pembroke watched from his fathers side as his mother and the large scary mare talked. He didn't know why his mother had gone over there, but the fact that the larger mare was talking with her gaze the colt a great sense of relief. What would have happened if the mare lashed out at his mother? It was a terrible thought and he shuddered. But no, it appeared the large mare was okay with speaking to his mother. When the large mare looked his way, though she didn't seem to be looking directly at him but more the herd in general, Pembroke couldn't help but to try to make himself look smaller and thus not draw in her attention. His eyes lowered and he stared at the grass for a few moments before lifting his gaze once more. Good, the mare wasn't looking at him anymore.

His attention was suddenly pulled away by his sisters outburst. It was so strange, Blossom, like him, was usually very quiet and so when she started crying he lifted his head to look at her. He could understand, of course, they had been through something terrible and still were going through it. In an act that went against everything he was, and against what his mother had told him to do, Pembroke left his fathers side and went to his sister. She was laying on the ground crying and kicking. He glanced at his cousin. "What happened" He asked the older foal before turning his attention back to his sister. "Blossom." He said in a quiet voice, hoping that his sister would hear him among her tantrum and stop to listen to him.

So far the mare was listening, that was a good sign. Just when she thought she might get through this without any issues she heard Blossom start to cry. Her motherly instincts told her to immediately go see what was wrong with her daughter. But she fought them, knowing that the herd was there to see to the small foal and she had to stay here with this mare to acquire her children proper sleeping. Even so her ears flicked and turned to track the sound but she resisted the urge to look back. She didn't trust this mare one bit so she had to keep her focus on her. The mares words bit into her and Whisper fought back words of her own. She was not th type to speak ill of others but when someone insulted her children and thus her mothering skills it got to her. Her patience paid off and the mare returned to the purpose of her quest. She could take the children, at least some of them to rest, it was better than she had hoped for.

"Thank you." She said with a dip of her head. "I will collect the first three and be ready to go in a moment." With no other choice she turned her back to the mare and made her way back to the others. She had to decide which foals to take, but first she had to quiet down Blossom. Whisper moved to the tiny foal, the others were clearly trying to quiet her down but it wasn't working. Stepping up to the tantrum throwing foal Whisper lowered he head and nuzzled her daughter. "Quiet now." Her voice but soft but firm, she needed Blossom to listen. "Yelling won't help. I'm going to take you to rest now, we can go to our grove, but you must stop this outburst now." She never ever wanted to yell at her children, and she wasn't, but she felt bad for being so firm at this moment, yet the situation left her no other choice. "Pembroke, you will come as well." She looked around, trying to decide which other foal to take with her. Sykes she spotted already asleep under Olo. "Synder, would you like to come and rest?" She asked the older foal. "I can only take three of you now, but the rest can come after the first have had some sleep." This would give the filly a choice between coming now or coming later.

Syphax waited with a slitted gaze for the little mare to say something - any sort of rebuke to her words or orders, anything at all that would give her just cause in punishing the mare. She was little - it wouldn't take much, just a quick strike would leave her bleeding on the ground and it was a delicious thought.

Sadly the mare seemed to have more sense then that and merely accepted her comments and commands with no arguments. Pity - it would have made this guard duty a touch more exciting and she was fairly certain that one wounded hostage wouldn't have made that much of a difference. Turning her gaze towards he comrades she nodded to several of the guards. "Accompany the mare and the foals to the grove, if they attempt escape ..kill the mare and wound the foals." She instructed. The foals were more important in the long run then the mare - a goody two shoes like Mercy would probably do a great deal more to save foals then she would to save a mare.

The guards snapped to attention and moved off to the side to wait and escort the mare and foals.

Blossom completely ignored her brother, if anything when he spoke to her she fussed even louder, it wasn't his fault really - he just wasn't who she wanted to hear and this wasn't where she wanted to be. It was all just too much, too much to deal with in such a short bit of time. It wasn't until she heard her mothers voice that she started to calm down a little bit.

"We..we can go home?" She asked her mother in a hiccuppy half crying voice. She tried to listen to her mother and be good, but it was so hard and she was just so tired. "I want to go home now!" She went on though her wails were quieter and she stopped kicking to roll back onto her chest and sniffle, eyeing the adults and other foals around her to see if they really were going to go home or it they were just telling her that to make her calm down.

Synder didn't like to admit that she was tired or out of her league but she was and it was with great relief that she saw Whisper approach and speak with Blossom. "I don't know, she just freaked out." She told Pembroke in a quiet voice. "I guess it's all just too much for her." She stated and really she couldn't blame the smaller foal, it was a lot to deal with even for an older foal like herself. Honestly she was halfway surprised it wasn't Poe having the breakdown.

When offered the chance to go and sleep with the other's Synder had to keep herself from snapping up the chance right off the bat - she was soo tired but she didn't want to look like a weakling foal in front of the other's. Instead she pretended to consider for a few moments before nodding slightly "I can go and help you with them if you'd like Whisper." She told the older mare - there, now it looked like she was going to help rather then going to sleep - though sleep was about the only thing on her mind at the moment.

When his sister continued to wail after he had spoke to her Pembroke was at a loss for what to do. Even the adults around couldn't seem to break through Blossom's tantrum to quiet the foal. He looked up at Synder as she tried to explain the outburst. It made sense...in a way...even he wasn't all that happy with how things were going but he hadn't fallen into a tantrum like his sister. It was only when their mother appeared that Blossom finally started to calm down. He nuzzled up to his mother, taking comfort in her quiet ways. He had never heard her speak to any of them like she had just done to Blossom, but obviously even his mother was stressed over what had happened. "Okay mother." He told her as she explained how the napping would work. At least they could go to their grove to sleep.

"It's been a hard day on all of us." Whisper said to Synder and Pembroke as they discussed Blossoms outburst. In fact, she was surprised that they had made it this long without an outburst from one of the foals, so they were actually doing quite good all things considered. "Yes, we can go home to sleep." She told her daughter again and gave her a nudge to get to her hooves. "But we mustn't doddle, this opportunity can be taken away if we do not follow the rules." She turned to look at Synder and smiled as the older foal offered to help instead of going to rest. "Thank you Synder, I think that would be fine." She looked among the three foals. "Pembroke, you will go with Synder, and I will take Blossom. Now listen carefully the three of you, this is not play time, there will be no running or laughing or anythign else. We will walk as a group, escorted by a guard, to our grove. There we will rest. If anyone does anything to upset the guard then..." She paused not wanting to scare her children but also wanting them to know the dangers of misbehaving now. "...bad things will happen. But don't worry, I will make sure nothing happens, you just need to follow the rules." She glanced at the larger mare who had given her permission to do this before looking back at the foals. "Come along now, before this is taken away from us for taking too long." She said and nudged her daughter once more to get her moving.

Blossom sniffled slightly but the promise of going to sleep in their grove where it was quiet and safe and comforting was enough to keep her from dissolving into more fits. At her mothers nuzzle she gathered her feet underneath her and stood up. The rules made it sound like the grove wouldn't be as nice as it normally was but at least there was shade and it was familiar, she supposed a handful of guards was better then the ever circling squad of beasts that had been watching them all day.

"O-okay." She finally sniffed, rubbing her eyes on her foreleg to get rid of the puffy feeling that had developed due to her outburst before following along after her mother. It would be so nice to just sleep and forget about all of this. Maybe when she woke up everything would be over and done with and the mean Soquili would have gotten what they wanted and left. Blossom knew this was a far fetched hope - but at least it was a hope.

Synder's tail lashed slightly at the rules, it was wrong of these strangers to come in here and tell them how to behave, they weren't their parents, they weren't even a member of the herd and as far as Synder was concerned they had no right to be treating them this way.

But there wasn't much that she could do about it and if she tried it would only lead to the 'bad things' Whisper eluded too - Synder could only image what those bad things would probably be, it would likely involve the condors like the scary mare had threatened before. "Come on Pembroke." She told the other foal as she followed along with Whisper and Blossom. "Lets go and get some rest, things will be better after some sleep." She stated confidently even though she wasn't entirely sure if that would be true or not. They would probably feel better at least and she supposed that was something.

Syphax watched as the mare gathered up the foals - at least she had stopped the screaming one. Such an infuriating racket that had been! It surely made her reconsider having foals of her own someday , but then her own foals wouldn't be nearly so ill behaved and untrained. This whole herd was comprised of worthless savages as far as she was concerned, useless drains on the environment. It was a pity that her mother was so hell bent on capturing Mercy, surely the revenge would be just as sweet if they killed her family.

Shaking her head slightly Syphax eyed the guards as they surrounded the mare and foals before turning her attentions back to the main herd. Hopefully the rest of them would continue to be well behaved as the day wore on.

Whisper kept their pace steady, but made sure that they moved slow enough that the foals wouldn't be rushed and forced to run. If they ran the guards might take it as a sign of them trying to escape. Honestly she thought the guards were fools if they though she was going to try to escape, especially with three foals in tow and there was no way she would ever abandon the foals for a slim chance at escape. She looked at the guards that formed up around their small group. They were nasty looking brutes and judging by the looks on their faces Whisper was certain they were not all that happy about having to watch over a bunch of sleeping foals.

"It's just a bit farther." She told them all, though it was more for the benefit of the foals than the guards. Of course her children would be able to see that they were approaching their little grove but she wanted to make sure they knew that they were going home, even if for a little while, and that should ease them a bit. She led them through the trees until they entered their grove. It would be a bit crowded with the guards but she would make it work. "Here we are." She said looking at one of the guards before turning her attention back to the children. "Come now and rest." She picked a spot near the middle of the grove and nudging the three foals softly the pale mare laid down as well.

Pembroke fell into step beside Synder and looked up t the slightly older foal. Her words were encouraging, and he did feel that things would be better after he got a proper nap. Of course they would still be surrounded by horrible Soquili, but at least they wouldn't be tired on top of that. He stuck close to Synder's side, soaking up her confidence into himself. As the guards moved in around them he kept his eyes focused on his mother in front of him, he did not want to know what weird looking Soquili would be watching over him as he slept. All he wanted to know was that he was going home and that his mother, sister and cousin would be there with him. That made it a little bit better already.

He nearly let out a sigh of relief when the reached the grove, but he held it in not wanting to draw the guards attention to him. Pembroke watched as his mother settled down in the middle of the grass and then with a quick look towards Synder, to make sure she was coming too, he moved to Whisper's side and laid down. Having his mothers body pressed against his own gave him comfort, her warmth flowed into him and while he was still a bit nervous he found himself relaxing. Sleep likely wouldn't come instantly even though he was dreadfully tired, but he knew that soon enough he would fall asleep and that would be a good thing.

The closer they got to their grove the better Blossom started to feel, it felt as thought each hoof step was a return to some semblance of normalcy - well as long as you ignored the hulking brutes that came along with them. Blossom had decided that she would just pretend they were trees - big ugly trees that she would ignore, otherwise there was no way that she would be able to fall asleep no matter how tired she was.

And she was really...really tired. When her mother settled down in the middle of the grove Blossom was quick to follow, sighing slightly in relief as she snuggled up close to her mothers side. She closed her eyes..and tried to fall asleep but even with her eyes closed she could feel the giant beasts watching them and whimpered slightly, tucking her head closer in an attempt to block them out.

Synder Laid down with the rest of the foals as Whisper tried to settle them all in - and though she was just as tired as the others she told herself that she wouldn't let herself fall asleep until she knew the younger foals were sleeping and safe - not that she didn't trust Whisper to look after them all but two sets of eyes on the guards were probably better then one. Eying the guards suspiciously she almost missed Blossom's whimper and glanced over at the little foal - it didn't looks like Pembroke was sleeping yet either though she was trying very hard to do so.

"Maybe a story?" She suggested after a few moments of thought, something that would take their mind off of things, surely hearing Whispers voive and paying attention to the story would let them forget about the guards just long enough to drift off to sleep.

Much like his sister Pembroke was having a hard time falling asleep. They were in their home and their mother was there, which was comforting in a way, but he could still see the guards not far away and the stress of the day was still present. He wished father and Sykes could be with them. He wished the whole herd was free right now. But those wishes would not come true, he knew that even if he didn't like it, but he could still be hopeful right?

His attention turned towards Synder. Before today he hadn't really liked his cousin very much. No that was a lie, he loved her of course, but she was usually too rough and tumble for him. But today he had come to see her in a new light and she had shown that she wasn't all that bad. He reached out and nuzzled the older filly. "I would like a story." He said with a bob of his head.

Whisper gave each of the foals a long loving nuzzle as they settled down around her. She knew they would not sleep easy, even though they were home, but she could be here to give them the comfort that they needed, when they needed it. When Blossom whimpered she rested her head over her daughters back for a moment. "Shhh. I will be alright. I'm here." She said in a calm and soft voice.

At Synder's mention of a story the mare looked the older filly with a smile. "That's a wonderful idea Synder." And before she could say anything else Pembroke stated that he too would like a story. Yes, a story would be good to take their minds off of things. She wa so proud of the older filly for behaving as she was now and truly being a help. Synder had been a bit of a wild child but Whisper was now seeing what lay deeper, it showed her that Synder would likely grow to be a very compassionate mare, who would likely try to hide such things from others by continuing on in her reckless manners. It made her smile. "I know many stories. Is there anything in particular you three would want to hear?" Having the foals help to pick the story would start to take their minds off of the guards but also allow them to participate in this as well.

Blossom was almost startled when Synder suggested a story - the older filly wasn't normally a fan of such mundane things, but she was grateful for the suggestion none the less. A story sounded like a wonderful idea to her and she set her mind towards a good suggestion. Maybe the story of how mother and father had met? They had all heard that one a great deal but it was a favorite considering how personal it was...and then there was the story of how father had almost been washed away as a foal... or how the herd had come to be a herd in the first place. There were far to many to choose from and her brows furrowed in thought as she tried to decide which would be the perfect one.

"How about the story about father almost being washed away?" She finally suggested, it was a good story as it had heroes and a good ending - just the srot of story she thought might be needed at the moment.

Synder had never really been a story girl - oh she had listened to them when the others made her but generally she would much rather be spending her time doing something more...active..and adventuresome. Of course that wasn't really an option at the moment and it certainly wouldn't help anyone fall asleep.

Still it meant that she couldn't really think up a decent suggestion, she just hadn't paid enough attention to them to know which was her favorite. Thankfully Blossom seemed to come up with something and she bobbed her head in agreement. "That is a good one." She stated, turning her head to see what Pembroke thought of the suggestion, it was more important that the story was good for the two younger foals then for herself - sure she was having trouble falling asleep too but they needed it more in the long run.

Whisper smiled when Blossom asked for the story of how her father had nearly been swept away in the stream. It was a story the herd knew all too well, for it had not only been what had saved Oloneric's life but had also brought in new members as well. "I think that's a great story." While she had been surprised that Blossom would pick that story she was more than happy to tell it so that her children could settle down and get the sleep they badly needed. "Is everyone settled in and ready?" She asked, wanting to make sure the foals were comfortable before starting the story.

Pembroke hadn't been sure what story they would end up hearing. There were too many for him to pick from. As he lay there thinking on it he heard his sister mention the story of how their father was almost washed away. He head popped up and he nodded. "Yes, I want to hear that story." He told his mother before looking at his sister. "Good choice Blossom." And just like that the world was starting to feel more normal once more. Oh there were still scary monsters standing about holding their herd hostage, but now in this very moment with his mother laying with them about to tell them a story Pembroke could almost forget about all that and see this as just another regular day.

Pembroke shifted and fidgeted a bit trying to get in the most comfortable position possible but still be able to listen to the story his mother was about to tell. Once he was nice and settled Pembroke looked up at his mother. "Okay, I'm ready." And he was. He was excited to hear this story even though they had been told it many times, mostly to remind them of the dangers of running off alone and most especially how something as safe as the stream could turn dangerous if they weren't paying attention.
