No, they're terrified of the white mages because they worked together with some dude named dragon.
WHO IS ALSO NOT EVIL, but instead seems to merely have ******** up in an exceedingly catastrophic way so as to make everyone think he's evil.

It's understandable that people fear magic if most people don't understand the concept of magic in that world. And it may be difficult to differentiate different branches of magic if they don't understand and repent magic. Kinda like in Dragon Age.
