"Well, we're early." Chaci murmured, pushing her way through the thick underbrush into the clearing. She could hear Delphina behind her, trying to stay in her footfalls. The mare was a tiny thing, and could barely keep her head above the thick tangle of vegetation. Chaci was having similar issues, but she had a bit of height on the winged female. She stood at the edge of the brush, holding it apart so the mare could shove her way through. "You okay Del?" She asked, wandering over to help the mare pluck twigs and leaves from her mane and feathers. "I have to say, Not having wings does have its advantages."
Del snorted, ruffling her wings in an attempt to shake lose the offending foliage."Yeah, I'm okay. I think I have a twig in my ear however." Del made a face when her friend laughed, presenting her ear so Chaci could remove the twig. Turning her head, Del couldn't help but laugh at the sight of herself. "I'm excited to see your sisters again... Dad mentioned he'd heard she was seeing some mystery stallion. Any clue about who that is?"
Chaci huffed, leaning back. "No, but I intend to find out. She tells me everything, I don't know why she won't talk about this guy. I'm worried, maybe he's bad news or something."

"You know they're going to beat us there, since you were late to meet up with me this morning." Kaishara Immareska sighed to her sister, giving the burgundy-coated mare another searching look over her shoulder. "And they're going to want to know why, I hope you know that."
They were pacing through some very crowded wood on their way to meet Chanci and Delphina, which meant that for the moment Masque was safe from the full-fury of her sister's questioning gaze. It was difficult for Kaishara to make her way through the woods and avoid getting caught in razor vines or injuring her wings. Still, the wind mare did her best to make sure that her curiousity was properly telegraphed. Hopefully, if she badgered Masque all the way to the glade, by the time they got there she would have softened the dark mare up for when Chaci took her turn.
And Chaci could be lethal in the name of curiosity.
Considering it a moment, the black mare shrugged and flicked her sunset-colored tail. "Now that I think of it, I hope you have a good story ready... Because Chaci is going to tear it apart."
"Yes, I am aware that I was late in arriving to meet you this morning.. And as a consequence of that, we are going to be late to meet Chaci and Delphina in the glade." Masque answered tartly, flicking her ear idly to shake off a low-hanging vine as it tickled her. "And as I in-fact have met my sister many-a-time, I am well-aware how tenacious and nosey she can be. As such, I am fully prepared for the interrogation I am no-doubt about to receive."
She sighed internally at the thought of the 'tribunal' she was going to have to face when they reached their destination. Bad enough that her sisters were going to be there in force to question her, but so would their mutual friend Delphina. However, Delphina had manners, which Chaci might forget in the pursuit of secrets... So Masque hoped the presence of the wind mare would keep the others in check, to a certain extent.
"You know that our get-together has nothing to do with the stallion I've been spending time with. I fail to see why this will be a main talking point." Masque huffed and wrestled her way through the brush. "Afterall, we're supposed to visit since it's been so long. Surely we'll have better things to discuss?"

Delphina gave her companion a long look. "Now, you know she's going to clam up if you go in full tilt. There's obviously a reason why she's kept this quiet, maybe she's just not ready to discuss it." Chaci was a sweet mare, but had a tendency to be... overbearing when she wanted answers. Masque was quiet, but no pushover, so Del knew this was going to be an interesting meeting. Having a daughter of her own made the wind mare more patient than her cream coated counterpart, and as a result, she tried to reign in Chaci's lethal curiosity. Or nosiness, depending on you're point of view. " Come on, don't jump in head long. Broach the subject slowly. Remember, you get more flies with honey!"
Chaci made a face at the other mare. "I do have SOME tact you know. I'm not a barbarian. I'm worried is all! I mean, she hasn't even told Papa." The mare scuffed her hoof along the dirt, making an attempt not to pace out right. "How would you feel if Sitara was off seeing some Stallion that you'd never met before? That she only mentioned in passing. I don't even know this guy's name Del!" Chaci perked after that, turning towards the thick brush behind them. "Hey Shara, Masque!"

"Alright, alright." Kaishara shrugged. "No need to get so grouchy with me. I'm on your side, remember? I just want you to think about this stuff before we get there.. Because the minute we step into view, Chaci is probably going to lose her head. I'm just trying to look after both of you, because that's what a big sister does!"
The wind mare sighed internally, hoping their first visit in ages was not about to devolve into an all-out shouting match. Dealing with family could be difficult, but for the most part the Phantom Clan managed just fine. They were social enough to thrive in a group setting, to thrill at the chance of performing for an audience. Even if that audience was one good friend, Shara rather hoped for a three-part harmony rather than Masque and Chaci at each other with Shara herself playing referee.
If that happened, she was bound to loose a few feathers. The idea was less than appealing.
"You try and tell our sister that you don't want to talk about your new boyfriend because 'we have better things to discuss'". She muttered under her breath. "But give me a warning, because Del and I need to be in the air when you attempt that."
"Sorry, Shara." Masque sighed, some of the fury melting away. She didn't mean to snap at Shara, and knew that the dark-coated mare was just trying to be helpful. Just trying to give advice and be the good big sister, the way she always had been. And she was right, to an extent, which is probably what made Masque all the more defensive.
Her sisters had every right to be curious about who she was seeing, especially since she'd kept him a secret. And surely Chaci would be concerned because Papa didn't know... But she wasn't a filly anymore, and talking to her father about some stallion she had a crush on just wasn't her idea of fun.
She shoved away the unhappy thoughts and put on a smile, ears flipping forward at the sound of familiar voices. Another few strides through brush and trees saw them safely into the glade, and face to face with the other two.
"Hello, sorry if we kept you. I got a little caught up this morning."
"It's great to see you both!" Kaishara enthused. "Surely you haven't been waiting too long?"

Chaci shot her wind companion a withering look, before turning to her sisters with a smile. "Not long at all. We just wrestled ourselves though that thicket when you two joined us. Hey Sis, you got a twig in your tail braid." The mare laughed, trotting over to Shara to remove it. "So, its been a while for all of us... What have you guys been up too?"
Del eyed the cream coated mare for a long moment, wondering where this tact had suddenly appeared from. Normally she was up front and honest. Demanding and brutish with her wants and desires. Now here she was, delicately broaching a subject that she normally would have bowled right over. "Lets see..." Del murmured, ruffling her feathers. "Ash is back after me for more foals. He can barely keep an eye on Tara and her roaming, adventurous ways, and now he wants more." She rolled her eyes. "Males. You know, I'd like a brood of all girls. That would really through him for a loop."
Chaci laughed, silently thanking her dear friend for tossing out a topic that was close to what she really wanted to broach, but not right then. "I'm surprised he waited this long! He's wanted a heard of children since forever, Tara's kept him distracted for a while. It serves him right to have a wanderer of a daughter, just like him!"

"I am glad to hear it." Kaishara laughed, shaking her head as some of the tension faded away. Both of the others seemed to be in good spirits, which was lovely. She was still hoping for a lovely "Girl's Day" and minimal arguing.
Though there would be no avoiding it when Chaci's hard-head encountered Masque's "Secret"... But she could hope for peace outside of all of that. It was easier to stay quiet and hope that her little sisters played nicely, and then jump in and be referee when the situation called for it. Thankfully, between her and Delphina (and their wings) they should be able to coral the two to separate corners until any frayed tempers were soothed.
"Do I?" She murmured in surprise, craning her head back around her wings to consider it before turning enough to allow Chaci to help her. "Drat. Thanks Chaci, the darn thing got stuck when we were pushing through all the brush. It must have been longer than I expected between our visits, the path seems outrageously overgrown."
Masque watched Kaishara spin as she fought to get good luck at her twig, shaking her head in faint amusement at her elder sister. When Chaci stepped over to help her set to rights, she turned to toss a grin at Delphina. "Hello Del. And is that so? So not only is your handsome man finally back to you where he belongs, but he's after you to expand the family? Well I will admit, the last pair were quite lovely as foals and are beautifully grown now."
She gave a soft laugh. "I agree with Chaci. Tara sounds like she is just like her father's side of the family... It would serve him right if you had three or so more girls for him to chase around."
Kaishara laughed softly at the mental image of Ash trying to bolt in three directions while he attempted to round up fillies. "Oh, maybe you should pray to the spirits... It would be worth it."

Del laughed, stretching her wings out before returning them to their folded position. "She really does have that wandering gene. It drives Ash bananas that she does, but Delri has it far worse, and he doesn't say a thing! If my girl wants to wander the lands, she can, and it shouldn't matter if she's a mare or as stallion. Ash tends to think she needs protecting, so I'm hoping to give him more daughters so he'll let Tara spread her wings, so to speak." She loved her mate, and he was an amazing father, but he did tend to focus on Tara and her behaviors and adventures. She was doted on by the 3 generations of males, and Del's own father, so it was a wonder her little girl made it anywhere alone. As a result, Del tended to keep her daughter's secrets from Ash, and helped her get out on her own adventures. "She's been out with Dad for the last few days, so its just been Ash and I, and he's been very serious about adding to the family. I suppose its time again, it has been a few years." Deciding to keep the focus off of Masque and her mystery stallion, Delphina turned to Shara. "What about you? What have you been up too?"
Chaci smiled, nipping at her sister's flank as she moved away. "Glad to be of service Sis." The cream coated mare couldn't help the smile at Del, knowing exactly what the winged mare was doing. If she babbled on, Chaci couldn't get a word in edge wise, making her quest to discover the identity of her sister's mystery suitor difficult . Well, the mares tended to underestimate Chaci's stubborn streak, and her lack of social tact. Sure, they know she was bad, you'd have to be dumb NOT to know, but they didn't think she could be as out and out boorish as she often was. She came by it rather naturally, their father had a stubborn streak a mile wide. He was also ridiculously dramatic, but that was neither here not there at this moment. "So Masque..." the mare murmured, stepping closer to her sister. "What have you been up to lately? I haven't seen you in ages!" Wow, that was pretty tactful on her part.

"The SilverShadows have always wandered far." Kaishara noted distractedly, flipping her tail to ensure no more twigs were caught in the long strands. "Sibalto's fault, at the very least... Though I am sure there are several stallions further back that we can blame for it, if we decided to look."
She snorted and shook her head. "It's probably a right of passage for the males, or some such nonsense... You'd think Ash would let his daughter try it too, rather than bottling her up. Though I'm sure it's not intentional, and he just worries... He adores them both so much. Telling a stallion 'no' is tougher than a mare... We understand things like 'danger'... And boys just hear 'adventure'. So of course they would be come outrageously irrational at the thought of their precious daughters doing half the things they did when they were young and foolish."
She shook her head. "More fillies would ensure he was distracted enough to let Tara live her life... I say again, praying to the Spirits would be worth it."
"That is the knight in him, speaking of protecting ladies." Masque agreed lightly enough. "Poor Tara, an over-protective father is a terrible thing to have. What it must be like to deal with, four of them? So many previous generations also telling her it is for her own good, and Ty as well... I'm not sure Papa was ever that bad, but if he was, he had certainly relaxed by the time Chaci and I came along."
She glaced at her elder sister in mute inquiry.
"Non." Kaishara agreed. "Papa was never that bad. But then, he was the born wild child."
She smiled at Delphina, fluttering her lashes teasingly. "Oh, and it's a hardship to think of expanding your family... What a hardship to have such a dashing LifeMate, Delphina. I am so sorry for your suffering."
The eldest Phantomess laughed and nosed Chaci's cheek in gratitude. "Thanks again."
She turned her attention back to Delphina at the inquiry, blue eyes glimmering in amusement as she considered the other wind mare. Oh yes, Delphina knew what she was about. At least Kaishara could count on her to help separate the other two mares if they got into a row.. As they were somewhat likely to do, truth be told.
"Ah... Well, I wandered quite a bit after things fell to apart with... Him." She wouldn't refer to her former LifeMate by name, but it was a little too dramatic to call him something like 'He Who Must Not Be Named'... So she left it at that, because the others would know who she meant anyway. They were all sisters, in a way.
"I wanted to get my head straight." She continued. "And while it was entirely by accident, I sort of found someone else? It's... It's very new still, we've only spoken here and there. But he is very kind... A ground, because I may never chase a pure Unicorn stallion again..."
She sighed. "But.. It is just a friendship for now, and a weak one at that. I do not want to give too much credit to it yet."
Besides, there was always a certain shadow that lingered around the edges of her world... And she couldn't quite give him up yet.
Masque gave Chaci a sweet smile as the cream-coated mare waited for the perfect opening (just after Kaishara had mentioned a new friend and then lapsed into a sighing silence that indicated an old flame was burning) and then jumped through it. It was so like Chaci, though the approach was honestly a gentler one than what Masque had been expecting.
A good thing Masque had her own shields, her own tales to spin.
"I do have a confession." She admitted with a flash of golden eyes. "There are several reasons I was away for so long."
But very few of them were what Chaci was hoping to chase out of her today... So she paused for dramatic effect.

Del huffed out a laugh, tilting her head. "I blame every single one of those SilverStallion males. I'd been more concerned if their hooves stayed in one place for too long. Take my child, for example. You'd think we tormented that boy the way he runs when its time to head back out again."
Lavender eyes rolled toward the sky, Del shook out heir mane. "So very true Shara. The second 'danger' is mentioned, they run head long in. Tara has the good sense, thanks to me, to turn and run the other way!" The grey coated mare smiled a the mention of her father. "Dad isn't near as bad, you know. He and Tara go off all the time and have they're own little adventures. He's such a wonderful father and grandfather. He'll be a wonderful mate, if he ever meets anyone.
Del's eyes widened as she regarded the eldest among them. "Truly? Wonderful Shara, I'm so glad to hear there's someone, even if it is new!"
She watched the mare for a moment, hoping she hid the smile that pulled at her muzzle, She could see the old flame burning in Shara's eyes, and it was beyond obvious who it was. It wasn't her personality to interfere in love lives that weren't her own. She wanted to shake Shara and tell her it was obvious that she was still in love, after all these years, with Del's father. But, as Ash had pointed out many a time, it wasn't her place, and it they were meant to be, they would come together in the end.
Chaci shot a startled look at Masque, before turning back to her eldest sister. "Well, that's wonderful to hear Shara... And here I would have figured you'd have gone for a burly Alicor- OW."
Del leveled a glare at the cream coated mare that was obviously her 'mom' look, because it shut Chaci up quick. As did that swift kick in the flank.
Chaci coughed, veering back on to Masque as quickly as she could. No need to draw Del's ire any more then she already had. Smiling slyly, Chaci leaning toward her. "Ooooh? A confession you say? Well, no need to torment yourself a moment longer Sister, unburden yourself on us!"
Del stared unabashed a Chaci. While she didn't much look like her father, the mare certainly had his flair for the dramatic.

"They are awfully sweet..." Kaishara murmured with a faint smile. "I almost feel bad to blame them... Especially Sibalto. But then again, when the guilt can clearly be lain at their hooves, what choice do we have?"
She gave a shrug, flicking a brightly tipped wing as though she were sweeping aside the conversation. "I am not surprised to hear Tara is the sensible one. She does take after you, in that respect, Del. I am not sure the same could be said for Delri... While he is a sweet and somewhat sensible boy, he does also seem like he'd strut right into the jaws of danger..."
She sighed and shook her head, thinking fondly of the young stallion. Stars keep him safe, if he was wandering like his father's family and soaring to the starts at every opportunity. She didn't want anything bad to happen to the lad, it would destroy Del and Ash.
"Ah yes, thank you." She ducked her head to hide a blush, coughing and trying to clear her throat. It would be better to steer the conversation to less treacherous waters, but at the moment she was utterly out of ideas that didn't end in throwing Masque to the lions. And she couldn't quite do that yet. "I do not want to get my hopes up, of course... At any rate, on to some more exciting news, perhaps?"
She spun, giving Chaci a dirty look before giving Del a grateful smile. Del could be relied on for a well-placed kick, it surely was the reason her mate and son were so well trained! And Del spared her having to reply to "the Burly Alicorn" comment.
Masque watched the antics of the females around her, shaking her head faintly to herself and humming in soft amusement. She wouldn't laugh at the antics of her sister and friend, but they were amusing none-the-less. She was so fond of all of them, but some of her life couldn't be shared... Not yet, not here. Maybe one day, and she hoped they would understand then... But now she knew the news would not be well received, and she didn't want to fight.
Though Chaci seemed set on it, since she mentioned 'alicorns' to Shara. And there was no doubt as to whom she was speaking of... There were very few of the alicorn types they all knew, and only one stallion came to mind to mention to Shara that would result in blushing... Or perhaps tears, depending on the moment.
The first, Masque could handle. The second she didn't want to.
"Indeed." Masque sighed, and a hidden burn-mark on her withers itched as though it was an omen. "Part of the reason I have not been around you all, is that during the summer I found myself caught in the forest. A summer lightning storm caused a wild-fire, and I was trapped...."
She trailed off with a duck of her head. "A unicorn stallion saved me, at great risk to his own life, and he was not uninjured when we made it to safety again. I hid, in part, to recover from the burns I sustained... And I could not stand to face you, scorched by my own foolish wanderings."

'Do you see now what you've been missing? Wasting your time with those males and wallowing in your own misery?' Kaishara thought to herself with a bitter-edged amusement. 'How could you have been so foolish, I wonder? How did you think hiding in shame was better than fighting for a new life, spending time with those you love? Be sensible about this and tell your sisters...'
It was far easier than expected to be swept away by the swell of laughter and the welcoming laughter of her friend and sisters. The chatter was light, even when more serious matters arose, and did much to soothe the rough edges of Kaishara's heart. Still, it seemed the general lightheartedness was not to last, if by Chaci's words or Masque's own. Frankly, Kaishara was surprised at the abrupt turn the day had taken, staring shocked at her younger sister.
"What?"
"And I could not stand to face you, scorched by my own foolish wanderings."
Watching her little sister as Masque bowed her head in shame, Kaishara was struck absolutely dumb. Frantically her mind turned the words over in her mind, over and over again, attempting to make sense of them. She couldn't possibly have, surely she didn't mean...
'Masque?' She wondered, weakly. 'You... What?'
It took far longer than she wished to admit, but the words were so hard to hear. They bounced stubbornly about in Kaishara's skull, foreign and discordant, like a bad note in the midst of an otherwise mellow strain of music. Abrupt, discordant and far too loud; foreign. Her little sister had been trapped in a wildfire, nearly died, been injured who-knew-how-severely... And they were just now hearing of it? Just now learning of the danger she had faced? Where had they been, how had she been so far away? What if that stallion hadn't been around?
Who would have told them? Masque had no familiar friend fluttering about in her shadow, haunting and guiding her steps. So? She was away on her own most of the time, only rarely visiting her father and family. How would they have learned? Poor, precious Masque would have disappeared and... and.... what? Never been seen again?
The thought made her heart tighten rapidly in her chest, cutting breath short for a moment. Giving herself a faint shake from nose to tail, the dark Phantom mare drifted close enough to nuzzle her sister's cheek. "Masque, I can't believe... Are you alright? Why didn't you tell us earlier? And perhaps we should find you a friend, a companion that could tell us when you're in trouble."
She trailed off, giving her sister a concerned goings-over. The seemingly healthy appearance of Masque made her racing thoughts calm, but then a new idea surfaced that made her wince. She tried to swallow the words, but they slipped free after another moment. "Does Papa know?"
Likely not. Papa would have a fit.
