Seems a society from a Africa has it's own definition of virgin. Usually, it's understoon that once a p***s enters the v****a, the virginity is lost. This society emphisizes the state of the hymen. As long as the hymen is intact, you're considered a virgin. They even have certain ways to have sexual intercourse to preserve the hymen, so they can remain 'virgins'. Unfortunately, most of these people are misinformed on a lot of things about sex. They believe the hymen to be a barrier of the uterus. So as long as there is a hymen, there's no way for them to get pregnant. It's also against their religion to use condoms, so you can believe there were more than a few mishaps.... So much importance is placed in the hymen that women who tear theirs sometimes go for a reconstructive surgery of the hymen.

Africa is largely misinformed. There should be more sex ed. Even if it is against their culture. They think you don't get AIDS if you don't talk about it. Well, so far it hasn't been working.

Depends where you are looking at in Africa. I live in South Africa and I'm pretty clued up about sex. Yes, I am white and my culture is much more different than some of the blacks here but even some of them have altered their culture and beliefs.
As I've mentioned before in other threads, virginity is considered a sacred and important thing here, especially in black South African society. My maid and her family had to pay another family in cattle traditionally, the modern variation being cash money of course, because her son "dishonoured" this girl by taking her virginity - regardless if they were in love and/or consenting.
I'm not denying that there are those ignorant beliefs - there are even beliefs that if you have sex standing up, you won't get pregnant. I don't like the use of "against their religion" because most African ethnic groupings do not have a religion per se that tells them that "condoms are bad". Some ethnic groupings have roots in voodoo whilst others have a belief in nature which is quite similar to Paganism and the Asian belief of ancestors protecting you.
There is also a great deal of Sex Ed in the country starting at Kindergarten level already - not the full "this is a p***s and it goes into the v****a" intially. Just the basics that you should wear gloves if you are helping somebody who has a cut in their leg for example. The problem or challenge is that there are not many children that get schooled, that's what causes people to cause the disease and virus to spread - plain ignorance. But there is a further problem that people can't even afford to feed themselves and their families let alone get their children educated. So, the real issue is how poverty affects the spread of HIV/AIDS in developing countries in Africa - because it is evident that many urbanised black South Africans for example are well informed about the nature and cause of the disease compared to their rural counterparts. If you have access to education, then the world is literally revealed to you.
