Once upon a time, Dollface trembled in fear, and was loving, mothering. He is cold now, expressionless. It is a harsh byproduct of his time at The Red Door. Very few things makes his expression change to more than a simple bloodless smile that never reaches his pallid eyes. In his tone, he is clipped and precise. Dollface finds he simply no longer feels things strongly. The world is a washed out land and the only thing worth anything is his devotion to Lady Kensington.
Every day, he dons a pair of white gloves. Skin to skin contact unnerves him and is almost the only thing that can make him react outside of polite interest or disinterest. Dollface has become utterly convinced that he carries a taint of filth on his body that he can never be rid of He is worried that he will spread it to others simply but being around them or worse, touching them. In his mind, he is teeming with germs of corruption and no one is safe. This kind of thinking is illogical, of course, but it is a belief ingrained deeply in his skin, just like his tattoo.
To those Dollface owes his allegiance, he is ever faithful. Lady Kensington could ask him to jump into open flames and he would merely respond with 'yes, my lady.' Because he believes his life holds no worth beyond what Kensington has given him, he is the ideal, unquestioning servant. He often does things of his own free will to ease her way. In this Dollface is utterly ruthless, caring not for societal dictates or legality. If there is a threat to her, he would find a way to have it removed. However, despite all the changes in his life, he has never forgotten Preacher, both his childhood friend and first savior.
History:
Clarence's parents died from a nasty fever when he was only six. Unfortunately for the boy, he had no relatives to take him in and, in a fit of utter stupidity, evaded the people who suggested he be put into the orphanage. He ended up straying into the Eastern Alleyway, as his parent's home was not far from there. The street was a cold bed that night. His crying attracted other street brats and they began harassing him, threatening to sell him or his pretty dark hair. Luckily, one feisty little boy named Preacher stepped in and helped defend him and escape. Preacher took him to Tinker, where he was given the nickname 'Dollface', for his porcelain skin and large, clear eyes.
In Tinker's gang, he was a beggar, working larger events for coin. He also served as the gang's drop-off - the other members passed him their valuables as the day wore on. Dollface became a bit of a mothering figure to the littles in the gang, showering them with affection and keeping the worst of Tinker's moods away from them. Life was pretty much as idyllic as it could get for a slum brat. But then Tinker found Preacher's letter of recommendation to the military. On the spur of the moment, Dollface steps in and saves Preacher from Tinker's immense wrath. The blow to Tinker's head shocked him, and he would have never found out if one of the little hadn't accidentally told Tinker of Dollface's actions. In a fit of cruelty, he cuts off Dollface's finger, drugs him and sells him to a brothel in Wall Rose.
The Red Door is not a brothel known for its gentle clientele. This particular establishment requires all workers receive a properietary tattoo. They may choose the location of it; if they refuse, location is chosen for them. The tattoo is red keyhole outlined in black, underneath it, it reads simply 'me fecit'. 'Me fecit' implies that the Red Door not only owns them, but also made them. After serving there for one year, Dollface falls horribly ill. Enraged at his sick lack of response, one of his regular clients (Joseph) beats him violently. Inex, the brothel owner, decides to cut his losses dispose of the sick and battered boy. Despite the earnest protestations of Zelda and Blaise, Dollface is put in a wagon for transport. During transit, delirious and beaten, he escapes, but eventually collapses on the grounds of the Kensington family estate.
Madelyn Kensington, one of the daughters of the Kensington duchy, takes in the boy. As she always skirts the edge of propriety, she bargains with her parents, trading midnight rides for Dollface. He becomes her personal servant, dressed nicely, trained. Her chaperone. As she is his savior of a sorts, Dollface will never report to her family any questionable activities, instead protecting her from unwanted advances and fabricating lies. Dollface is loyal through and through.
