After meeting with those that he was going to be patrolling with and leading Merikh had been quick to learn what it was that each of them were good at, made sure each of the three miniature units within the whole were balanced, then they were ready to go. They had been pretty well off for the most part and it had taken only the smallest bit of rearranging before he felt that things would be a lot safer for those in his charge. Just as his grandfather had said it was up to him to lead them, to keep them safe, they weren't just there to be sacrificed. He'd be damned if he let any of them fall before the toy soldiers that wench Aevah had unleashed upon the world. His kind only had one life to live due to their lacking of a soul, he'd make sure that all of his men were able to live those lives to the fullest, allowing them to enjoy battle to the fullest, and if they were lucky they would see Aevah and her awful lot of birds fall in their time.

Instead of hiding in the back Merikh, flanked by Yolana, had taken the lead, with the twins and Igone behind him, and behind them were their troops. Everyone was armed and at the ready, prepared for whatever the Mara might throw at them and it really didn't take long at all before they made their appearance. As they did so Merikh was that much happier that he had been assigned these troops, the groups the Mara were traveling in seemed to be growing. Likely because they were on the move, going to war against everyone it would seem from the way that they were expanding outwards from Eowyn. He could only hope that they did wipe out the Orderites or those cowardly Dovaa before he had the chance to do so himself. It really would be such a waste.

Drawing his sword Merikh said, "I want the Archers and the magic wielders to ready themselves, stay in the back, take shots when you can." He glanced at Igone, "You will keep a close eye on them, make sure they fall back if they need to, I won't have the lot of you getting into hand to hand combat, that is our job." Turning then to the twins he said, "Lory, Volio, the two of you are with me, we will wait for Igone and his troops to send in their first volley of arrows and spells, going in to finish off what is left of this unit of Mara. Remember what I said about not fighting alone, we can't risk losing even a single member of our group, not when we are protecting Oblivion City. Ready, Igone?"

The archer nodded, taking aim with his own bow before he called out, "Ready! Aim! Fire!" He called out and a moment later a rain of arrows and dark spells were raining down upon the group of Mara, taking out a few and significantly weakening others, the moment the last arrow fell Merikh started the charge with the twins, Yolana, and various other warriors following along after him. The two groups, his own and the one made of Mara, met in the middle. Their weapons clashed against those of the Mara, against their bodies, and it wasn't long before their flickering souls were flying into the air, proof that they were doing well against the creatures. The group was a big one but Merikh already had faith in his group that they would be able to pull it off easily enough, why wouldn't he after all, those following him were all pure blooded Oblivionites, all armed to the teeth, well trained, and chosen by his grandfather to serve Merikh. They were the best there was to be had.

Merikh, flanked still by Yolana, moved to battle with a trio of Mara that was made up of a Rock, a Metal Mara, and a Mage Mara. An interesting group, powerful as well given the variety in which they were armed, but he wasn't all that worried, "Yoyo, from here on out, since there are so many of Aevah's toy soldiers about, I am not going to rein you in." He called over to his bodyguard as his sword clashed against the spear that the Metal Mara carried, knocking it aside so that he could lop its metal head off of its shoulders. He didn't even watch it land, turning instead to face off against the Mage Mara next. It took a bit of swift dodging on his part as it slung its spell his way, but soon enough its head was added to those already on the ground.

The moment that Merikh gave his orders to Yolana, allowing her to move as she would, she'd drawn her dual daggers and was rushing forward into the battle as well. She was a speedy little thing, able to dodge around and land blows against the Mara that were already injured by the volley of arrows and magic. Merikh gave her but a glance, not too terribly worried about her since he'd bet she was one of, if not the strongest, person here. She'd be fine now that she was free to move as she would. Just as she was fighting hard as were all those around him. It pleased Merikh, to see them fighting in the way that he had told them to fight, that was to avoid fighting alone since that meant they could be more easily overwhelmed. Instead they were paired off, watching each others backs, which would keep them safe.

The battle continued on leaving only one of the Mara left standing, a Rock Mara at that, which amused Merikh greatly. The weakest among them but it was still standing... though not for too much longer, he'd see to that.

Despite the fact that the Rock Mara surviving the initial onslaught of his group amused him Merikh wasn't about to allow it stay alive any longer then it already had. Already he could see others coming at them from the forest, a bit distant still but close enough that he knew that they were going to have another battle on their hands quite soon. "We need to finish them off, quickly! We don't have time for letting them join one anotehr in bigger groups!" He called out before he lunged forward, locking his blade with the Rock Mara. It was tangled up with him good, its flanks left open, and instantly Lory was lunging forward with his hammer, slamming the Rock Mara in the chest with it, knocking it flat on its back. Once there the big Oblivionite was quick to bring his hammer down a second time, crushing its head, causing its sould to flee from its body before he turned to Merikh, giving him a nod, "Shall we keep going, Sarg?" He asked, getting a nod from Merikh who also seemed ready to get to the battle.

Taking a step back Merikh gave a quick sweep of his soldiers, checking for any wounds that any of them might have gotten in their first skirmish against the Mara. It was far from his first battle against them but for those he was leading it was their first time fighting Aevah's toy soldiers, he had been a touch worried. His scan showed only a few minor scratches here and there, some bruises, but nothing to be worried about though from the looks of things. Excellent, he'd hate to see any of his men injured this early on. The fact that they were all looking to be in such good health at this point was a good sign, it meant that they were more then ready for what he would be asking from them in these battles. So long as they continued to follow his orders he felt that they would not only get through this but they would do so with 'flying colors' as the saying went, not that they could see colors, but whatever. The validity of the saying what was important, it was the strength of his men that was and he felt that they were more then strong enough to keep up the fight against the Mara for some time to come. Turning his attention back to the coming Mara he called out, "Igone! It's your turn again!"

"Yes, Sir, Sergent Merikh! Soldiers, at the ready! Take aim and wait for them to come within range!" Igone called to the those under his charge. He then took aim himself, lifting his bow up, readying his shot. There was no reason for them to waste arrows or for the mages to waste their precious energy on missed opportunities. Only when the Mara were in range would they fire and once the coming Mara were in fact within range Igone grinned, "Now!" He ordered them, once more causing a rain of misfortune to fall down upon charging Mara.

It was a good tactic, one that allowed Igone's men to soften them up before Merikh and the others went in for the kills. Merikh was pleased with how well it was doing and meant to praise Igone for it, later though, now it was time to fight! Merikh made a motion with his hand, starting the next charge.

The sound of the two groups crashing together was ever a loud one Merikh noticed as his sword met the big hammer that another of the Rock Mara were carrying. He used his weapon to force the hammer the Rock Mara wielded to the ground before he ducked down, allowing Volio to come in this time, knocking the Rock Mara senseless with his hammer, one that matched that which Lory carried, leaving a spiderweb of cracks along its surface. Once it was stunned Volio moved onto take another good, hard swing at another of the Mara. It seemed that the twins were quite good when it came to leaving the Mara all cracked up and broken he thought to himself. He was pleased with the sight and found himself making a mental note to thank his grandfather when he next saw him. The man had gotten him some incredible soldiers to join him in the battle against the Mara. He watched, a grin on his lips, as Lory moved to take the cracked Rock Mara's head with a powerful strike from his hammer before everyone turned to look toward another Mara that had arrived. This time though it was a different sort that they hadn't seen up to this point in their skirmishes. It seemed that the Mara had more powerful soldiers in their ranks, those that that they had kept hidden from those on Eowyn.

The Crafter Mara were strange to them, at first they were uncertain what it was that they were here for since it didn't seem as though they were fighting too hard... but after a moment the group saw what it was that they were up to. They were mending the other Mara that the twins were smashing up with their hammers? Merikh's empty eyes narrowed, a hiss escaping from his lips before he called out, "Watch for these ones! They are healing the other Mara!" He called out to his men, pointing at the Crafter Mara. It caused a shift in the way that his men were fighting almost instantly as they went from fighting any Mara within reach to targeting the Crafter Mara whenever possible. Merikh meant to do the same thing. Due to the Oblivionite melee group targeting the Mara healer first it wasn't long before they had been wiped out, leaving the others to fight without their aid.

With them wiped out it allowed everyone to go back to battling in a less urgent manner, able to instead fight and kill whatever was closest to them. It wasn't long before the battlefield was once more empty of Mara, "If anyone is injured fall back to Igone, he has our healers with him." He called out, wanting for anyone who had been wounded to take advantage of the lull in combat to get fixed up.

The next wave of Mara that came out of the woods and toward his group was one that had a lot more of those newer Mara then the last couple waves. It seemed as though they were trying to bolster their forces, trying to together in a group strong enough that it would be able to over run the large unit of Oblivionites that were guarding the road to Oblivion City. There was a single member in his group that would allow them close to the city, not when there were civilians there, elderly there, and children still too young to fight. It was up to the lot of them to keep these things from getting there. Sure, there were other troops still in the city, yet another barrier between the city and the Mara but it didn't mean that he was content with that. He wanted to do all that he could, kill all of the Mara that he could, so that they could ensure the safety of his people.

"I swear once we are done here I want nothing more then to pummel a few Orderites into the ground for this." Aevah and her worthless race, he'd see them all pay for what they had done to not only his people but the damn world itself. They may have damned everyone in their attempts to make someone else fight the damn war for them, weak, worthless, cowardly wretches the lot of them.

There was a bit of a chuckle from the twins, "If you will have us, Sarg, we will be more then happy to tag along with you." Lory said, seeing no reason not to continuing following the guy in the future, especially if it meant going after the Orderites were they roosted. The bunch of birds had gotten them into a lot of crap doing what they'd done, they deserved a good beating.

"I hope that Lord Draco ends that woman after what she did." Volio added as he hefted his hammer up to rest it on his shoulder, he knew that they likely wouldn't get the chance to battle the woman themselves but they could all put their hope into Lord Draco, that he would see to it that the vain woman answered for what she'd done.

Watching as the Mara charged forward toward them none in the group of melee fighters moved even a step forward, not yet at least. They were all waiting for what they knew was coming, that being Igone and his troops bringing down a rain of death and pain upon the heads of the charging Mara. Three battles in and the Mara had yet to catch on... that or they just didn't care. Perhaps they felt that they had enough troops on their side then there would be no way to stop them no matter if the ranged fighters struck first or not. As though Merikh would allow for any failure, "Get ready, the fun is about to start." Merikh said, his lips pulling back into a bit of a toothy grin. There was no reason to attack, not quite yet, not until Igone's initial attack happened, not unless they wanted to get caught up in it themselves. After seeing the damage the arrows and magic caused, able to slow down the Mara and weaken them, he felt it best to stay out of range of the attacks.

It was only after said attack started and subsequently ended, did he lift his sword and pointed it toward the Mara, "Alright, men. Charge!" He called out, rushing forward along with the twins, Yolana, and the rest of the troops. Igone had done his job, he'd led his troops as he did well, softening the Mara, giving them many good targets. After those initial assaults there were always cracks, even if they were just faint ones, to take a swing at. By taking full advantage of all of the weakness presented to them it allowed them go through the Mara at a quicker pace. The faster they took them down the better he thought to himself a moment before he heard one of his men calling out, saying that they had a man down. Instantly he whirled around to face that direction, then pointed, "You there, take him back to the healers! And you, cover their retreat!" He called out, sending two of his melee fighters along with the injured man, sending them back to where Igone and the others were waiting.

"Until they get back we will need to push that much harder!" He called out to those around him, lunging forward into another battle himself, tussling with one of the 'knightly' Metal Mara. Amusing how they dressed most of the Mara save for the Rock Mara up in such a fancy manner. It was as though they weren't content with having just any toy soldiers, no, they needed pretty ones. The Orderites were naught but a bunch of pretentious asses he thought to himself, his mood worse now that one of his men had been injured.

He was quick to lop the Metal Mara's head off with his sword before he kicked the body out of his bad, moving forward to take on the next one. Being that it was just a Rock Mara it was almost too easy to take out, and then there was the Crafter Mara. He starred at it a moment, lips pulling back into a smirk, "Oh don't think that I will be holding back on you." He said, then called out, "Lory, Volio, you know the drill with these ones!" He called out to the twins.

Instantly the pair were coming forward, slamming into the Crafter with their hammers, once each, leaving the Crafter weakened by a spider web of cracks, before he lunged forward and finished off the Mara off. He starred down at a moment, spitting on its body before he rushed forward once more. There were still more then enough Mara to go around, they would likely be at this for a while he thought to himself as he fought. He was content enough with that, so long as his men were kept safe. They were what mattered most of all to him, even above personal glory, which was quite a show of maturity for the normally single minded Merikh.

The battle was continuing on, the group barely able to get even a moment of rest before they were suddenly set upon by another wave of Mara. It was strangely smaller this time though, enough so that his men were standing almost two to one against the Mara making Merikh feel as though they were up to something. What was it that the plotting now? Were they sending smaller groups out to exhaust them? If they were tired then they were likely going to be easier to beat or so he bet that the Mara were thinking. He would be damned if he let that happened though, motioning to one of his men he told him, "Go to Igone, tell him to concentrate all of his fire on the left half of the Mara. I want them to completely flatten that half of the Mara and the rest of us will take the other half." He told the man, sending the swordsman rushing back, across the rocky, battle roughened terrain to where Igone and his men were waiting for their next orders.

Leaning in the swordsman whispered the plan to Igone who nodded, moving to let the rest of his men in on the plan. They were going about things in a slightly different manner this time, likely to throw the Mara off as well as to really weaken, if not kill, a half of the current group of Mara that were heading their way. It appeared as though the Mara's much smaller attack force had put their Sergeant on edge, making him suspicious as to what they were up to, and Igone couldn't help but to feel the same thing upon looking at them. They had to be up to something, they had been coming in much bigger waves the last time around. It meant that the rest of them, numbers that were far grander then this, were somewhere. Where though, that was the question, "If you would, dear swordsman, check in with Sergeant Merikh and see if a couple scouts can't be sent from my group on a quick mission after this battle is done. I am a little worried as well as to what they are up to." What if they were circling around? It was obvious what their tactic was, that Igone and his men were the ones doing the initial softening up of the Mara, followed by those with hammers, then finally the swordsmen. If that were the case the Mara might be thinking about cutting the strategy off at the head much how one dealt with a dangerous serpent.

"Can do, Corporal Igone!" The man said, saluting before he rushed forward, able to hear the sound of their bows being drawn and spells being cast. He was in no way worried though, he knew that the men behind them were worthy of all of his trust, that they would never hit him or any of their other allies, they were there to protect them as their long distance guardians. Even as he ran forward spells and arrows arched over him and then down into the Mara, slamming down in a concentrated pattern on the half of the Mara that Merikh wanted wiped out. He watched for but a moment before he went to the Sergeant, passing on Igone's message before he moved to get into position for the fight to come.

Merikh looked over his shoulder to where Igone was standing, holding up a thumbs up to give him and his two scouts the go ahead. If he felt that something was up, a feeling that Merikh had as well, he would allow him to send out his scouts. If he felt that his scouts would be able to find out what the Mara were up to and help to end that threat then he was all for his Corporal taking such initiative as to come up with the plan that he had sent to Merikh to okay. The fact that he asked first pleased him as well, it meant that he really was in charge. It came with a lot of responsibility but it wasn't something that he minded, not when he already cared for all of his men and wanted to make sure that they were taken good care of and that they got through this alright.

"There is a Caster and a Healer in our half, Valio, Lory, I want you to give them a good smashing, alright? Yoyo, you hit each of them right in the epicenter of their attacks with your knives, and then I will finish them off, got it?" He got nods from the trio and a moment later they were moving to into battle, putting his plan into effect while his other melee fighters dealt with the rest of the Mara that had come along. Nothing that he felt was too much to focus on or worry about, mostly Rock Mara, and his men were more then good enough to end them. The battle was a swift one, with the small group of Mara getting cut down in no time, leaving him feeling a bit on edge about what exactly it was that was going on with them.

He turned, glancing over his shoulder as two of Igone's men broke away from the group, vanishing into the darkness, and he turned back to facing forward, "Regroup and get ready, I know that isn't all that they have up their metaphorical sleeves." He said, motioning for everyone to gather, regroup, and prepare for whatever it was that the Mara were up to.

It really wasn't all that long after they had all regrouped that the two scouts had reappeared, breaking off from one another so that one of them could rush over toward Igone, the other one going straight for Merikh, both stumbling and looking as though they had gotten a bit roughed up. The moment he smelled blood Merikh rushed forward, catching the scout as he stumbled, helping him to his feet, "Something happened, what is it?" He asked, looking over his shoulder, hearing something moving through the forest that the scouts had come from.

The scout looked up at Merikh, then back the way he came, "They are circling around! They mean to kill Igone's unit! Sergeant! You have to do something!" He said in a gasping, terrified tone, not wanting to see those that he had been fighting with harmed. They had all been fighting so hard and now the Mara meant to circle around and kill the lot of them!

The fear on his face was something too real and it bothered Merikh a bit, as if he would allow such a thing to happen to his men. They belonged to him and he wasn't going to allow anyone to take what was his from him! Helping the man over to the group he said, "You will have to stay behind this battle. We will have you healed up and back in the battle next time but for now you are to stay back. That is an order, soldier." Best to add that part, so that the man didn't get any foolish ideas in his head. He wouldn't have him rushing into a battle in which he might very well be harmed more then he already had been. He had to keep in mind the fact that he had a finite amount of soldiers under control, each of them, each life, was precious because unlike the others the Oblivionites didn't have souls. He wouldn't let that one life that each of them was born with be wasted because some animated rock decided that backstabbing was the best way to go.

"Go figure a creature created by that wench Aevah would be all for stabbing someone in the back." He said to his men before he broke them up into groups, "Group one, you're with Lory, group two is with Valio, and group three is with me. Yoyo, you will stay here with our injured man, keep him safe. I don't trust the Mara not to come after him to try to finish him off." He ordered her before he gave the rest of the directions, telling them where each of the groups was to go so that they could best protect their archers. He was then moving forward toward the woods, calling to Igone, "Best be prepared!" The fact that the second scout went to him meant that the man was at least up to speed with what was going on. They were barely able to get themselves between the ranged unit and the Mara as they came bursting forth from the forest on three sides. The only direction they were unable to come from being the back, where the Obsidian City was located. They wouldn't be able to circle around that way without being slaughtered by other Oblivionite units. It had been a gamble that he'd taken when he broke the melee team into three pieces and was glad that he had.

It was luck alone, or perhaps a blessing from the Dark Lady, that allowed them to throw themselves into battle against the Mara, giving Igone and his men a bit of time to try to figure out what to do and what to shoot at. Given that they were already in hand to hand with them it was impossible to shoot the Mara easily causing Igone to call out, "Mages! Concentrate on healing, archers, take shots only if you are positive you will hit!" With that order he notched an arrow and prepared to follow his own advice.

It was going to be a battle that was dangerous, not to mention brutal, already there were sounds of weapons clashing with weapons, weapons clashing with the hard bodies of the Mara, and more worrisome that of weapons against flesh. The mages were hard at work, doing all that they could to keep the men on their feet. They were stuck dealing with the pain, that was unavoidable, but at least none of them had been taken out of yet. By the time the battle was finally turned more in their favor the scent of blood was rather heavy in the air and there were many who, while healed of their wounds, were still weakened from the initial blood loss that they had sustained from the various attacks made against them by the Mara. The groups of melee fighters were being pushed back, even as they were cutting the various Mara down, making the battle seem one sided even if the number of Merikh's men were starting to out number the Mara.

It was a win, when finally obtained that had cost them a lot in the way of blood and magical power, leaving the mages in the group exhausted and forced to sit while those who could still stand moved to gather into a group, plopping down next to the exhausted mages. Merikh looked them over, sighing a bit as he took in the state of things, before he said, "We will rest for a time then move back closer to the capital, just in case." There would be a bigger chance of aid there, allowing them a moment of rest and recovery since it seemed as though they were in need of just that at the moment.
