Leda sat atop the roof, legs cast off over the side like tired fishing line, while she stared down toward the featureless street below. She knew the scene well in terms of white, with nothing but the lilting blankets of snow to carve out any manner of path through the buildings. And there she lay, arms splayed outward while she gaped vacantly toward the stars. For a moment, Leda wondered if that night harbored clear stars. She hoped it did - if nothing else, their clarity offered a modicum of comfort and marvel to those who knew to look up from time to time.

It wasn't like Victoria Moreau had a choice.

Since then, she met the man partially responsible - for she counted herself as accomplice to his blame - and attempted what she considered revenge. She thought it fitting to end the man who murdered her, as she knew the phrase 'eye for an eye' and thought it rather typical in employment with revenge. Maybe she was wrong, she considered, while looking down toward the grey sidewalks spanning the black road. Maybe she was overthinking it now. Maybe she wasn't thinking hard enough. Maybe she just didn't know.

Maybe her heard hurt for days from all this rumination, especially since it landed her no farther from the rut that she sank into that night. She remembered the resistance offered by his skull when the pan struck its mark, and she never cringed from it. Yet... In considering murder, even for that fleeting moment, she felt a wretched knot tie its way into her gut so fiercely that she nearly puked. Leda didn't like it, and ever since, she felt as though a shower never truly got her clean enough, and that no amount of reconciliation truly excused her from simply thinking about it. Maybe, just maybe, the older woman didn't want her attacker dead.

Maybe she just wanted a little closure, a small funeral, a flower offered by those who had a hand in her demise. Maybe she thought of her husband, her kids just before she passed, like all those movies mentioned. And maybe Leda thought far too hard on the subject, trying to make sense out of an incident where all parties bore a little fault yet none would find closure from it.

Before she even fully recognized it, a page's auric energy approached the senshi and sat nigh on top of her. She jumped slightly, smoothing her skirts before rubbing the tiredness from her eyes as she tried to render herself presentable for company.

Too much had been on the Cosmos page's mind as of late, but he was always told that was a good thing. Others accursed Sarras of being too cold, too stoic and distant, to the point that he came off frigid. There was being polite and professional, but then there was being a heartless Snow Queen. Given the white in his attire and the complete and utter disgust he held with everything about his battle uniform, he certainly felt like one, and what a pity that the lightness of the fabric didn't do s**t in regards to the summer heat. Even at night, he found himself damp with sweat and the attire didn't breathe as well as one would think, so not only did he come off as frigid and off putting to the presence of others, but he looked and probably smelled like a overworked ballerina. People asked why he kept shunning others away, and he would only had to motion to himself for the answer. When one looked and felt as miserable as Sarras did, who wouldn't want to steer clear of him?

But appearance alone wasn't the reason he wanted to be away from others. Recently, he found himself regretting his decision that night, even when the alternative would have meant his own death. Why had he been chosen to become a knight, when he found his hands and conscious filthy with blood? Every night he'd transform, it'd be cleaned from his attire and the stains would be gone, but he could still feel them there. Existing, only invisible, just under the skin. And as much as he tried to hide this, he hated it. In his brief tenure, he managed to isolate himself from his allies, kill a young teenager instead of save them from the clutches of the Negaverse, and watched his fellow knights fall, one by one, and what for?

On the outside, he simply looked angry and disgusted, but if one tried to look deeper, they'd realize they were only scratching the surface of his misery. It didn't even start there, he reminded himself. He recent endeavors were only a part of that turmoil, and the driving force, the constant reminder as to why he reached for the cup in the first place, would periodically rear its ugly head, when he was most vulnerable.

Maybe that's why he found himself moving towards a familiar building. He passed by it many times before and never did it truly have any significance. He didn't even look inside to see what laid within- was it a store, was it an apartment complex? He never looked inside, and still he wouldn't look inside. It wasn't important to him. What was important, however, was the alleyway between the buildings, where a small cross laid, propped up and serving as a reminder to the life that was taken. The civilian life, and the sanity of one of her son's.

Only one. Sarras was absolutely certain that he was alright. Hurt, angry, full of rage, but he was not broken, he told himself, as he peered down at the alleyway where his own mother was murdered...

Tonight was different, though, as he felt a stronger Senshi aura in the area, and he glanced forward, immediately spotting the senshi and wondering just how bad his tunnel vision was to not have seen her there before. Given her vibrant hairstyle and her dress, he figured it was pretty damn bad, but he decided not to bring any attention to it as he jumped across the way to join her. Normally, he'd like to be alone as he mourned over the site, but tonight... it was different. Tonight, he genuinely welcomed the company. "Evening..."

Leda nodded tiredly in the page's direction, offering him a soft smile. "Evening," she repeated. Soon afterward the smile fell away and her gaze returned to the ground below, hands loosely clasped in the folds of her skirt. She kicked her feet out listlessly from time to time. "I haven't seen a page in a long time. I'm Leda, Senshi of Steam. And I promise, I look a little better than this most days. I'm just..." She rubbed at her eyes. Lost? Tired? ... Stupid?

Oh, he's going to think I look like I've never done this before. Ooh, I'm not so great at making good first impressions...
"There's these dreams I keep having where a huge like... twister of darkness shoots through the sky and then it explodes and everyone turns to stone and buildings get destroyed and... Um, it happens every night. I keep waking up from it. So, um... I don't really sleep good. Well. I mean well." Oh, I'm making this worse, aren't I? Maybe I should change the subject before we get too far into that one...

Wringing her hands, Leda bit her lip while she considered broaching the topic of her being there. While the next logical step, she was unsure if she could talk about the incident without tears welling into her eyes. Her ruminations on it gave some strength against outright crying, but it wasn't enough to quell the hurt.

She sighed. "So why're you here tonight? Just out on patrol? It's a little bit cooler tonight than it has been. The nice breeze must feel good through your... tights." She finished, trying not to look at his uniform as a means to suppress a giggle. It worked, thankfully, and she only side-eyed him to stir those small threads of mirth. "I mean, no offense or anything. I've seen worse... I think." Finally she covered her mouth, as trying not to smile at it only made it worse.

"Sorry!" She cupped both hands over her mouth, turning eyes toward the man while giggles escaped her in the form of a few sporadic snorts.

"Sarras, Page of the Cosmos," Sarras said flatly, feeling equally exhausted as she probably was but deciding not to draw any attention to that. It would have been rude and whatever stressed her out was none of his business until she said so, and apparently it didn't seem to take much prying to get this one to speak, which sent all sorts of warning signs to the Cosmos page. He didn't immediately want to judge her or belittle her anxieties with assuming that whatever was bothering her were the typical teenage girl crap. He had learned that those in their field hardly ever concerned themselves with stupid, mundane humans things when there were heavier and much more important matters on their mind. Whatever was bothering her, he imagined it was something big, and that she'd need an ear. Or at least she wouldn't mind one. 'Lord knows I need something else on my mind...'

"Nice to meet you." He wasn't like Richard. He carried conversations but only out of necessity. But that didn't mean he wouldn't try to comfort her in some way. "You look fine from where I'm standin'. 'Sides, say what you want, Leda, you can't look as bad as I do, though I'd imagine you'd pull this attire off better."

But they weren't here to talk about clothes, now were they? What did clothes matter when she brought up her dreams... a very familiar dream, and he could not help but stare down at her. He may have joined her side on the building, but he hadn't taken a seat, and likely wouldn't. He didn't want to feed into the illusion that he'd get close to another ally again, at least not so quickly after the disaster on Mistral. Still, the dream she mentioned intrigued him, but he wasn't too eager to admit that he had this dream, too. "Sounds like hell on Earth, this dream. Let's hope it stays that way... I'd rather not see that become of our city, otherwise why would we be here at all? That'd mean we failed... and I just won't accept that."

Her questions were meant to distract them from the dream, and it was a welcoming distraction. Even with the crack about his tights, it was better than talking about that horrid dream and the nightmare he endured when on that wonder on Mercury. He allowed her to fiddle with the strands at his waist, not too bothered by it for the moment. "Patrol, I suppose. Mostly just clearing my head... got too much on my mind and I'd like for the lot of it to leave. Also to pay my respects to..."

Then she started laughing, and he knew it was bad when she snorted. That pretty much killed the mood for him, and he was painfully clear when he stepped away from her and indirectly pulled the strands away from her. "Why are you here? Don't you have other areas to patrol?"

Calming down, she tried to offer a genuine smile before rebuke struck her cold. Heaving a sigh, she stood and brushed the errant dirt from the ceaseless folds of her skirt. She found it far easier to cast her gaze toward the sidewalk far below than to meet ire in his eyes. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said anything... I haven't really met many people who, um... Dress like you." She bit her lip in an attempt to quell welling tears. It offered little remedy.

"You're right, I shouldn't be sitting around here. I mean... A while back, a um, a Negaverse agent tried to catch this older lady and drain her. I tried to stop him, but..." Covering her mouth to hide the strain of trying not to frown, she pointed with her free hand toward the sidewalk, where snow once spread unmarred across the expanse of street. And for a blink, she saw the single strike of red punctuation against the pristine surface. "I'm sorry. I can't say it. I can't."

You have to keep going, right? This won't end unless you stop him. Unless you stop all of the Negaverse. You don't have to do it alone, you just have to try.

He's going to think I'm a loser, that I should've tried harder. And he's right - I should've done something more, or stopped her from trying to attack Buddingtonite with me... Oh, I don't know the answers anymore. Can't I just move forward and be a better senshi? I can't ask her what I owe her anymore, what she wants of me. The dead don't just get up and talk. At least she kept her starseed... Wiping her nose on the back of her glove, she sniffed. "I'm trying to be a better senshi now, but I don't know what to do - I don't know how to deal with the guy who tried to drain her. I can't kill him, but... What else can I do?" Nothing truly offset the misery garnered by her own personal failure that night, and she quickly discovered that she could not sustain this state of mind indefinitely.

"I should find somewhere else to patrol," she finished at last, voice quaking beneath her sorrows. She dipped her head low in circling around the page, fully intent on crossing to the edge of the building and departing into the night to search for some youma, some officer, something to ease her burdens.

"That's because most people probably have a Princess whose fashion sense isn't a sadist to her knights," Sarras said, in a flat manner, most of his anger dissipated but a small fraction of it lingered. He told himself that it wasn't her fault and that her reaction was the appropriate one to take, but since when did rationalizing an angered response ever work for him? He didn't hate the girl- he just didn't want people making cracks about his terrible attire... who wouldn't feel self conscious about wearing an outfit like this? Were there any Chaos in her, he might have socked her right in the-

That's when he noticed the tears swelling in her eyes, and he cursed mentally to himself. He didn't think he had gotten that salty over the topic, but before he had the chance to apologize for getting defensive, she was willing to explain herself. And he wasn't prepared for it. At all.

He recognized the words that were coming out of her mouth, even before she covered it. It was in plain English. But he was having a difficult time comprehending what she was saying. He tried to tell himself that there was nothing unusual about a Negaverse agent attacking someone, nor was a Senshi coming to that someone's rescue. That was normal, apparently. That he understood.

But she had said 'older lady' and with her other hand, she pointed to the concrete, where Victoria fell and gave her last breath. His Victoria. His mother.

She was rambling about being unable to say it, but she didn't need to say it. He knew exactly what she was going to say... everything else she had to say, about being a better senshi, being unable to kill the one responsible, all of that registered as white noise to him, as all he could do was stare down at her... and think of this new revelation. Leda was here when Victoria died. She knew who was responsible for his and Richard's mother's death!

And she was trying to leave!

Sarras reached for her, unable to stop himself from raising his voice as he tried to grab onto her hand, her dress, SOMETHING that would keep her from getting away! He wasn't sure if senshi could teleport away or not like the Negaverse officers could, so he had to grab something before she left. "DON'T! Don't leave! Please! I'm sorry I snapped, just don't... go..."

A sudden pressure on her wrist startled her and she stiffened up for a moment, temporarily frozen in a reactive state. Half-turning, she attempted to conceal her wet gaze while addressing the page. "Um, I'm sorry..." Unsure of why Sarras may want her to stay when he reacted so coldly before, Leda could offer nothing better in terms of a response.

Instead she blotted away some of the welling tears on the back of her glove.

Maybe he's lonely? Maybe he came out here for a reason, and it's a lonely reason, like he couldn't sleep tonight and had no one to talk to. I mean, he had those dreams too, didn't he? Gosh, we both must be so tired. I wish I could just go back to bed...

Sniffling, she tried to put on a smile. "Sorry, it's um, pretty mean to just... Run off on someone like that. Did you, um... Need something?"

Had he been more rational in his train of thought, he would have realized the dangers that came with grabbing onto someone with magical abilities, as she could have easily turned her magic onto him, and was justified in doing so. If she wanted to leave, he had no right to stop her and there had already been one incident involving someone falling from this rooftop...

"No, not incident..." He told himself, as he reaffirmed his grip, even when she was trying to blot away the tears with her gloved hand. She wasn't going anywhere, it seemed, but he wasn't going to take that chance. He couldn't take that chance. She knew something about that night, because honestly, what were the odds that there was another woman who fell from this very rooftop, due to a Negaverse agent? Someone would rationally try and piece it together and normally Sarras thought himself to be the rational one, and yet...

"My mother was killed here. My brother's brain snapped because of it! I'm going to find out what happened... and if she had anything to do with it."

She asked if he needed something, and he answered bluntly, "Yes."

He tried to calm himself down, and though he had not released her, his slacked in his grip, loosening it so that it might not have been so painful. It was easy to forget just how much stronger he was in this state... he already felt someone's neck snap from his grip, and he didn't want to hurt Leda. At least, that's what he told himself. When he felt he had a tighter leash on his emotions, he spoke up again, though his words were still tense and far more taut than he would have liked. "You said something happened to an older woman. Tell me everything that happened here... everything. I need to know."

The sudden pressing for answers about an ostensibly unrelated incident puzzled her, but Leda instead focused on maintaining her own composure beyond trying to discern the nature of his questioning. Were they of opposing sides, Leda considered that she'd be wholly overwhelmed by his presence alone, much like the Titan who nearly caught her some time ago. Even now she found herself unnerved, but shut her eyes for a moment to quell the timid shakes encroaching on her hands. "Um, okay... Let me try to remember..."

But the memories hurt.

"I was just doing a normal patrol, and um, I felt this Negaverse captain approaching. So I figured, you know, I should try and see if he's up to no good... So when I went to investigate, I found him trying to drain this older lady wearing nice clothes... She had like, a mink coat on and designer heels and stuff like that." She stopped herself before her description grew substantially into delineation of her outfit and how it worked together to sculpt an overall successful look. "But when I told him to let her go, he just... Picked her up and took off with her. I was kinda surprised."

Drawing a deep breath, she opened her eyes and cast her gaze to the ground, perpendicular to the pair. "So I followed him... And we got to this cafe, here. I didn't um... I didn't really know what to expect at the time. Just that... Maybe he'd get tired of me being persistent, you know? But instead he set her down nicely, and removed her shoes for some reason. I don't know why. It was kinda absurd. But, um... Then he turned on me, and..." Swallowing, Leda tried to stymie the welling of tears soon warping the rim of her vision. Her lip quivered slightly, but a deep breath remedied some of the symptoms.

"I got him with my attack, then the older lady jumped on him and... He must've thought she was me or something, because he ended up throwing her off of him..." And into the street, she thought, yet she couldn't say it. "And, um, you know what happened after that." Lacing her fingers together, she tightened her grip til her knuckles turned white.

Bowing her head, she continued. "I found him again a lot later, and he's a general now.. Buddingtonite. I couldn't stop him."

He knew that this kind of behavior was beneath him and on some level, he did feel some shame in how he was acting. This kind of behavior wasn't fit for either a knight nor a grown man, but he felt it was justified. The woman she was talking about was his own mother... one would think him a heartless monster to not be so invested in her fate!

He also knew that he should have been more compassionate towards Leda's dilemma and that he should have tried to be kinder to her, but... he was cursed with a one track mind. Unfortunately for Leda, Sarras could only think about Victoria, and the more he heard, the stronger his grip had become, the more twisted with rage his face became, to hear of his mother's fate. The description of the woman was spot on- only his mother would wear that stupid mink coat and not seem to care how much of a target that made her! He continued to listen, trying not to allow his anger to consume him, trying to tell himself that Leda was only doing what he would have done, what anyone on their side of the war would have done in this situation.

'It's not Leda's fault... she did the right thing.' He told himself. Whether he believed it or not, though, had yet to be determined. There was still a deep rooted anger in his heart, but the revelation of her shoes being removed confused him, enough to loosen his grip slightly though it remained quite intact. That seemed like such an odd thing to do... one as vain as Victoria was to not go anywhere without her shoes, especially on a cold night like that, that was normal. What was NOT normal was the captain's actions, but there wasn't much time to dwell on that, no... not when Leda told the rest of the story, and Sarras listened to morbid curiosity.

Victoria fought back. When the opportunity presented itself, his mother, who more often then not was too afraid to even dirty her shoe to step on a cockroach, chose to rise up against a Negaverse officer instead of screaming for help or begging for her life. In a way, it was satisfying, knowing that she wasn't content to play the roll of the helpless victim, and yet, he found himself wanting to curse her name. She shouldn't have gotten involved. She should have just... stayed quiet and waited for Leda to handle the situation, or have just gotten over her own vanity and fled! Of all the times to physically fight back...

Leda had bowed her head, likely to hide her tears, but it was hard for Sarras to feel any sympathy towards her. No, he was exhausting all of his efforts in preventing himself from crying, and he muttered that name, nothing but venom dripping from his mouth as he realized he had met this general before. "Buddingtonite. Good, now I have the names of her killers."

Killers. Plural. Because Leda had just confessed a role in Victoria's fall. She was suppose to save her... and she failed.

"Killers...?" She echoed meekly, voice torn with tears. A timid glance upward toward the page offered a blurred view, so obscured by her sorrows that she had no way of making out his expression - and she wasn't sure if that terrified her more than his potential countenances. Sniffing harshly, Leda attempted to stifle the tears draining through her ducts and into her nose. It didn't work; already she tasted the salt on her lips. "So... What are you going to do? You're not going to hurt me, are you?" Uncertain, Leda started to back away.

The steps came slow, laced with tremors and falters. Each meager inch spread between the two played host to a rock, a mounted fan, a generator, a dislodged scrap of tar paper. "What are you going to do?" She echoed, as she slowly brought her hands upward to cover her trembling mouth.

A host of potential outcomes swirled in her mind, from him attacking her to simply walking away. With no way to tell which proved the greater potential, Leda stood wholly at a loss for how to react to the situation. She knew of her powers, of the steam she held as sole method of defense, but she found herself floundering in resolve when faced with the tough decision of using it on an ally. But was he an ally? Of course he is, you idiot, she inwardly chided herself. He's against the Negaverse just as much as you are. The only difference is... He's already that much stronger than you.

Everyone is. I'm not meant for this role. I can't do this anymore!

The sobs broke first, racking her shoulders while she bent her knees to curl inward instinctively. "I didn't know what to do!" She half-shouted at him. "I tried to stop him, I really did! I tried to catch her! I didn't know! I didn't know this would happen... I'm sorry! I should've died instead!"

ChibiGingi

Thus far, he was surprised with himself. He had wondered what he would do when he caught the one responsible for his mother's death, whether he would care if it was indirect or direct. He had always suspected it was the Negaverse at fault, but there was always the possibility that it was an accident, or she was simply caught in the crossfires, or that he had assumed wrong entirely and Richard had lied to him to cover it up. But this changed everything. Now he knew, and he was surprised that he could even think coherently to register a response at all. "What am I going to do? If... if I wanted to hurt you, would you blame me?!"

She was trying to back away, and Sarras simply wasn't going to have it. With each step backwards, he took a step forward, and he didn't think it was possible for someone in his attire to be so terrifying, and yet he could see it in her eyes. He should have felt ashamed, to cause such a reaction in an ally and a young woman, but he felt nothing of the sort. Whatever shame he had felt in snapping that lieutenant's neck was gone, as he felt his fingers twitching, wanting so desperately to wrap them around her neck and squeeze until the fear and life disappeared from those eyes of hers.

Seconds later she was sobbing, and Sarras' approached slowed to a halt. What was she doing? Did she truly think that tears could have saved her from this? He watched in seething silence as she tried to curl into herself, as though making herself appear small and defenseless would help her, and her heartwrenching sobs grated against his ears and conscious, combating that rage and trying to force the same emotions from him, but he fought. He fought with all his might, and he snapped when she apologized, unable to restrain himself from speaking his mind, knowing he'd be spewing too much but there was no filter now. "Do you have any idea who she was?! To me? That woman, that stupid, foolish woman was my mother, and her death has driven my brother insane! Do you have any idea what that's done for my family? Do you?!"

He didn't strike her. He wanted to- he could barely contain the urge. What stopped him? He wasn't sure, but he fought against the impulse somehow, but for how long? He began his approach again, not caring how terrifying he may have appeared, not caring that she was an ally. She was partially to blame for this! She was the reason why he was dragged into this war in the first place!

"Shut up! Don't you dare say that... what good would have happened if you had died instead? He'd had still killed her or who knows what! Stop... that wouldn't have helped anyone!"

"I don't know what else to do! I can't kill him - I've tried! And I can't do anything now... That man's a General, there's nothing either of us can do! Even if she was your mom!" I guess this is what all murderers face... The wrath of their relatives. I'll never do anything right in his eyes, I just know it...

"You're right, I don't know what that did to your family, and I'll probably never know... My mom is all I have, and if that happened to her... It would jsut be me. I'd get stuck in foster care, and then I'd end up on my own, and I don't even know what I'd be like. So no, I can't even pretend to know what it's like for your mom to get... murdered. I'm sorry, but I don't." Admitting to her own shortcomings felt a little easier. She shuddered, wrapping her arms about herself while she cast her gaze to the ground. "I'm sorry I failed, okay?!"

How do I even win with him? Is there such a thing? She sniffled while she scrubbed at the tears streaking her face. Maybe he wants to kill my mom too, but what good is that? If we're both stuck in these horrible holes, how are we going to help with the war? Isn't that what we're supposed to be focusing on instead of tearing each other apart? I don't even know anymore...

"What do you want me to do?"

Excuses. All this time, he had thought that his mother's killer would have been merciless, or cold, desensitized to the idea of taking a life, but he wasn't expecting one of them to be like this. A young woman, no older than a teenager, crying, making up excuse after excuse as to why she couldn't kill the other man responsible. To a rational mind, they were good excuses, but Sarras didn't care. There was not a single ounce of rationality in his mind, only rage, only a burning hatred, and now, a visible target. He had the face of both of his killers, and he wasn't going to allow this one to get away with it.

She had the nerve to apologize, and that only made Sarras' rage burn even hotter and brighter in his mind. "STOP APOLOGIZING! It won't change anything! She's dead! She was a horrible woman, but she's dead, and because of you, my brother's gone mad! He's insane, and it's all because of you two failing to keep a civilian out of your fight! So stop apologizing! STOP SAYING YOU'RE SORRY!"

Sorry wouldn't fix the broken ties in his family. Sorry wouldn't keep the rest of the family off his brother's case. Sorry wouldn't mend the broken psyche that Richard had suffered. Sorry was useless. It was a cheap escape in Sarras' mind, and the very idea that someone was attempting to sling the word at him as a 'get out of jail free' card was the final straw. Mistral said she was sorry, but what good was her apologies to him? What good were those apologies to the knights died collecting her trinkets? If apologies were an edible substance, than they offered nothing to appease his growing hunger. Only hate. Only revenge.

"What do I want you to do?" Sarras moved closer and closer, and his intentions were visibly clear, even before he rose his fist and shouted. "YOU CAN DIE!"

Leda visibly flinched for every wretched, gravelly yell that clawed its way out of the man's throat. With every flinch, she repeated a step. With every step, her head bowed marginally lower and lover until she looked toward the ground for answers. Toward the concrete, the tar and macadam that composed this wretched little roof that she so well remembered covered with snow and ... pearls? No, that didn't seem right. Tears drew to her eyes almost instantly when she realized that her memory faltered, that the indelible mark left by the incident might've eroded, as some of the truth eked out of the surface.

"Stop!" She finally cried out, bracing her hands at arm's length in front of him. With her fingers splayed, she strained even her metacarpals with a nonverbal indication to halt. "Stop!" She called again, repeating the gesture. However, even through the tears, she knew he wouldn't heed it. He didn't care. She ruined his life already - what worth were her commands to him? It ached, and she trembled terribly with the insipid grasp of fear, but she tried.

She tried. But, she realized, it was never good enough.

"Leda Swirling Steam!" She finally called, frantically holding her arm above her head while she waited for the wretchedly slow climb of steam as it spiraled up her body. When the superheated water pooled directly above her palm, all hot vapor and desperation, she arced the blast toward the page at nigh point-blank range. She knew it would hurt him, knew the scald might exacerbate his ire, that he may just lash out at her in a sordid repetition of the events that night.

But it didn't have to be. If she wasn't there...

Turning without a slip of hesitation, Leda pushed off from the building and leapt to the adjacent cafe before crowning the sidewalk below. With a little luck, the steam would've bought her enough time to escape... And to finally end the nightmare that haunted her so mercilessly.
