It was HOOOOOT outside and the last thing Zach wanted was to be wandering around Destiny City in the late afternoon drenched in his own sweat. The boy wasn't particularly muscular (yet, but he figured running around in his senshi uniform would help build some muscle over time) so he didn't wear a tank top. One day, he told himself, he'd be beefy enough to show off some serious biceps and the ladies would swoon. One day. It was his current lifelong goal, as the teen had a hard time thinking beyond the next month or two, let along across the entirety of his natural life. He'd been out of the house, wandering, with no particular goal in mind. Zach had a little bit of cash on him and he thought of maybe cruising the nearby mall for a new pair of shoes, but in this heat, the mall seemed several continents away. Thank goodness Destiny City Urban Development saw fit to place many benches along the main thoroughfares for foot traffic to take a break. Right across from the bench sat an ice cream store and Zach's eyes lit up like Las Vegas. ICE CREAM.Immediately he busted into the place and reveled not only in the prospect of getting a delicious ice-cold treat, but in the air conditioning the place offered as well. Whoo hoo! The charcoal-haired teen dropped into a space in line almost instantaneously and ended up behind a mint-haired teenage girl he thought he recognized. Would it be weird to ask her? Would that be creepy? Part of him chastised himself for even pondering tapping her on the shoulder but he couldn't shake the feeling that he recognized her from somewhere. Swallowing a lump in his throat, Zach cautiously tried to make conversation. "Ah... excuse me? Miss? I uh... okay, this is gonna sound weird but I swear I've seen you before... Where do you go to school? Uh, is that too weird? Sorry, I just couldn't help it!" Smooth.

Lucifer Force Totally cool yo, and no pun intended smile
Nat had woken up half-dead a few hours ago. Okay, so maybe that was a little dramatic, but with the heat and their newly-broken air conditioner, that's what it felt like. Even a shower didn't bring her a whole lot of relief; even if her dad kept promising a repair guy would pop up by the end of the day, it wasn't enough to keep her in the house. After she'd thrown on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, bam, she was gone. (Good thing too; her dad got weird about shorts, and she wasn't about to wear leggings underneath when the heat was already this bad.)
She hadn't gotten far before the ice cream store had lured her in as though she were in a trance. The chill of the air conditioning had sent goosebumps running along her bare arms and legs, and she had never been happier. Well, okay, that was overdramatic; a lot of happy things were happening to her this summer. But this definitely won it for the day so far!
Then, all of a sudden, she heard a voice behind her trying to get her attention. She turned, blinking curiously as she met the boy's gaze -- and almost instantly, she smiled. "That's not even a little weird." Weird would be licking her arm and calling her fluffy, or waving a teddy bear at her and saying it wanted to ask her a question. Weird was an alien cat giving her a pen. This was nothing. "Besides, " she squinted a bit, even if she could see him perfectly fine; she was trying to place the face to a name. "I feel like I've seen you before. -- I go to Meadowview if that helps."

Zach snapped his fingers. That was it! "I knew I recognized you from someplace. I'm Zach Calloway, junior at Meadowview. I think we had chemistry class together sometime last year? Is it... Natasha?" Zach cringed, hoping he was at least close to her actual name if not dead-on. Nancy? No, that sounded way too old-lady. He seemed to remember the mint-haired young lady had sat on the other side of the room during that year and they didn't end up being partnered together during labs. At least, not that Zach had remembered. And he would have committed such a pretty face to memory. "Ah, anyway," he mused, rubbing the back of his head to think of ways to keep this conversation going. "School sucks but at least it's got air conditioning... And Mrs. Sumpter man, she was so weird during chemistry, talkin' all about her husband and his bead collection... I mean, what man collects beads? And I get Tonka trucks, but at fifty three?" Zach chuckled then, as the strange woman known as Mrs. Sumpter had become something of a meme at Meadowview with everyone having had her class passing more stories of her escapades among the populace. Outside lurked something far stranger than Mrs. Sumpter, hiding from the sun in the cracks and crevices of nearby buildings, waiting, watching... HanaKirei Sorry about the wait! Zach; yeah, okay, she sort of recalled. It wasn't like that many names started with Z, right? (Don't actually answer that, she liked to pretend there weren't and she'd actually succeed at remembering the poor kid's name.) When he made a guess at her name though, she couldn't help but giggle, trying to obscure it behind her hand. "Man, I wish Natasha was my name. When you're Natasha, you're like fifty-percent more likely to end up as a super secret spy one day." Granted, she'd ended up as a superhero. Maybe there was just something to 'Nata'? "Natalie Roux. Nice to re-meet you, Zach." Man, school... "My room usually has air-conditioning, but not today, " she remarked somewhat glumly. The gloom didn't last; it rarely did when she was involved. "School does suck, but at least we've got a great pool." Except he might not care about that; he might even have a pool of his own, lucky. She couldn't help but laugh again, trying to keep quiet as the line crept up and they got closer to the counter. "I saw her husband once, right? - she kept me after school, don't ask - " Long story involving some peer pressure and a lot of glue. " - and he came to visit her - and he didn't even have a beard on! What's the point of having so many beards and then not having a beard?!" Lucifer Force Please, make it up as you go, and so sorry that I'm so slow! crying

Zach couldn't help but chuckle nervously. "It's nice to re-meet you too, Natalie." Their friendly banter would continue back and forth for a while, even after they'd received their beloved ice cream. Zach had requested Natalie sit with him at a booth near a window and she gladly obliged, the two of them swapping horror stories about chemistry class or the latest final they'd have to study for. Schooltime gossip, rumors, hopes and aspirations for the future were covered as well and Zach found himself comfortable and happy sharing this conversation with not only a pretty girl, but a fellow student. Time seemed to fly by when only an hour had passed. One woman's scream and broken the reverie of ice cream and air conditioning, a giant, six-and-a-half foot locust appearing in the doorway with a male jogger's head wedged firmly in a claw's grasp. The man had struggled, his Nike shoes squeaking against the shiny linoleum lining the floor of the ice cream shop. Giant wings had buzzed at such a low frequency, the glass separating patron from ice cream trembled and warped. Screams erupted as people attempted to climb over the counter to get to the employee entrance to the store since a hellbeast had blocked the main entrance. It was broad daylight and there were youma here. Zach swore they were only active at night. His chest tightening, Zach reached across the table as people clambered about, completely oblivious to the two teens and their plight. He attempted to grab Natalie by the wrist. "Natalie, I need you to listen to me." he started, voice low and as even as he could muster. The boy's heart quivered and he was absolutely terrified though he tried desperately not to show it. Zach had to save Natalie. "I need you to get out of here as fast as you can, okay? Call the police, call the fire department or something, but you need to save yourself, okay? Can you do that for me?" It was then that the youma began to speak, crushing the jogger's head like a grape in his hand and reaching for other patrons who attempted to run past him. "Ollie-ollie oxen food~"
