Kaede is extremely shy and tends not to speak very much, keeping her emotions hidden. As such she's often seen as distant and cold. However if someone manages to make her open up they'll find that she's actually a relatively cheerful, outgoing girl. She can be somewhat naive when it comes to dealing with others as she's always been somewhat of a shut in at home, but Aincrad has removed some of her innocence.

Kaede is an only child and has always been rather frail and weak. Confined to her bed for most of her life she's always used games to escape real life. She's never had any real friends and finds it very hard to trust others. She joined SAO during the beta test but due to her illness she didn't get to experience as much of it as other beta testers. However that little time was enough for regular players to label her as a beater, reinforcing her loneliness. Unlike the majority of players, Kaede loves being in Aincrad. In the real world she could only dream of travelling outside and experiencing what it is like to truly live.

Extremely frail and weak, Kaede is pretty thin and pale. Her hair is pretty well kept as her mother brushed it every day, sitting by her bedside. She doesn't have much in the way of muscle and is barely able to do more than walk.
