Early mornings were lovely. They allowed the Wind mare to stretch her wings out and work any stiffness from her limbs as she meandered, tasting sweet grass and cold, clear, water. It would be a nice break before she resumed her search for her half-sister. The lands were large, and none of their family knew where she had gone off to live.

But, it had been entirely too long since they had seen her all the same.

Keflee tipped her face up to the sun and sighed. There was a field of puffy clouds in the sky, which would make for intermittent periods of sun and shade. A pity, in some respects. At the same time, it wasn't a horrible thing, either; it would ensure she didn't get too hot, nor that she couldn't enjoy the warmth of summer.

"A good day for flying. An excellent day, in fact. I can hardly wait to spread my wings."

With Humphrey off digging through the underbrush for treasure, a fruitless task Sigurd would never understand, he'd taken to the skies to stretch his wings. The sun felt good on his back, and it was nice not to have his goat familiar grunting and muttering every step of the way; he ought to go flying more often.

There was a river bending through the hills, though, and it was hot enough that he descended lazily, wings spread fully to skim to a slow stop. There was a mare on the ground, her own wings shifting at her sides, and he debated a moment before gliding down to settle next to her. His hooves thumped against the grass, wings rustling at his sides, and he inclined his head to her.

"That doesn't seem to make much sense," he said, tone level, as he tucked his wings to his sides. "If you were that eager, you wouldn't wait."

The shadow in the sky put a smile on her muzzle. The black set of feathered wings set her at ease as she had to look away for the glare of the sun on the soquili's form. Angeni. The morning seemed to be getting better and better. His cool words didn't bother her as she stretched her wings again and turned with a respectful nod of her head.

Though she saw no classic headwings, it meant nothing; oftentimes on Wind and Angeni offspring, not all of them received the trademark set of precious wings. Keflee herself was proof of that. She did, however, blink at the mask and the horns she assumed were part of the skull mask itself.

She had yet to see his tail.

"Well, Sir Angeni, I need some nourishment before continuing my searching for my sister, but there is nothing wrong with anticipating flight, no?"

"Those who talk rarely do," Sigurd mused, but there wasn't much judgment in his tone. He swished his tail lazily behind him, leafy feathers rustlings. "In my experience."

He's curious, though. His wings are prominent and obviously those of an Angeni -- a gift from his biological mother, he supposes, though he's never met her -- but it's hardly the first thing others know about him. His cloven hooves, the skull resting over his face, his horns, his tail -- these are the traits that are of interest, and sometimes even garner suspicion.

He extends one wing, gesturing to the sky, and adds, "But by all means; don't let me detain you."

The rustle of leaves and the swish of his tail drew her attention. Keflee's sky-eyes flickered and then dimmed, warily. An ear turned back with its partner quirking to the side a little. Not just an Angeni-Wind. Definitely not a pure Angeni. She set her teeth and gave him a closer look over, her eyes continuing to narrow. Some of his fetlocks concealed his cloven hooves at first sight.

And even now.

But his tail?

The mare's disposition changed from cheerful and well-mannered to something Sigurd may or may not have been familiar with: disapproval, wariness, and even some disgust.

Keflee carefully stepped pointedly away from him.

"You won't." She primly stated, and abruptly gave him her back, not just yet flying off but more than tempted to do so. She was now dealing with someone beneath her notice, just like her father said she would. So far she hadn't encountered many. And Unicorns, poor grounded souls they were, were probably the only other breed she offered any respect to. She might have tried not to openly scorn others for having the misfortune to be, well...less, but it all depended on the creature she was dealing with.

Mostly.

So far this one had not been disrespectful, but there was undoubtedly some deception in not outright correcting her. Did it amuse him to be thought of as more than what he was?

Ah, there it was.

This was exactly the reason Sigurd reserved judgment on others; they rarely showed their true colors at first sighting. He followed her glance first to his tail and then his hooves, something not quite disappointment settling in his chest, but close to it.

The further he traveled, the more he realized that the world -- and the creatures living on it -- did not change. It was both affirming and disappointing to find that his family's herd was necessary.

How friendly she'd seemed a moment ago. But then, he'd heard stories from his father and grandmother both, and he'd had enough of his own experiences (though far tamer than theirs) to know how the world worked. It was simply a pity that it hadn't changed.

Voice mild, he asked, "Do you often turn your back on conversation partners you're hesitant to leave?"

The mare cocked her head, turning it to the side enough so she could eye him. The gesture itself was most certainly haughty. She seemed annoyed, and definitely felt annoyed. But of course nobody would think to warn her about what they were, would they?

"Only when my intent is to leave them. Good day, may even you find blessings brought to you by the wind."

And good riddance, she was pretty sure! Keflee had no curiosity, nor the desire, to learn about what this one was crossed with, or any variation thereof. In fact, while she knew she wouldn't be tainted by remaining in his presence, she simply didn't want to deal with him. And honestly, why was it so hard to just find company that didn't offend her eyes and all the good morals instilled on her from her family's herd?

The mare spread her wings and surged up into the sky, making good on the intent to leave him. She didn't know if he was the sort to follow and badger her or if he would simply tuck tail and continue on his way. Either way wouldn't please the mare. Either he was showing all his ill-breeding by following or he had no spine.

There would be no winning for him. Not in eyes such as hers.
