Image from hereSet. Oh where to start? Set is considered one of the most ancient of the Egyptian deities. There is evidence of his worship since the Predynastic Period. Set started as the local god for the city of Ombos in Upper Egypt. In her book Egyptian Mythology, Geraldine Pinch stated that there was a theory that the wars between Upper and Lower Egypt was the source of the myth of the conflict between Horus and Set as Horus originated in Lower Egypt.
Even with the first versions of The Contendings, Set was not seen as evil. In myth, Set would ride on the solar barque and protect Ra as he traveled through the Duat. Set was said to be the strongest of the gods. It wasn't until the Hyksos dynasty that Set severely fell out of favor with the Egyptians and his cult declined.
Set had three wives in mythology, Nebt Het (Nephthys) and two foreign goddesses Anat and Astarte. And while Maga is called the son of Set, Set's association with the desert leads some to believe that he is sterile.
