The light was terrible. She groaned inaudibly, wanting to reach up and cover her eyes but still stuck in the half-stage between sleeping and being awake. Her thoughts moved like slugs, crawling ever so slowly through her mind; every limb felt like gelatine and there was an uncomfortable, stale taste stuck in her mouth - where on earth was she? What'd ha--
Oh. Foggy flashes of memories came back to her, horrible things she wished for a moment she'd never remembered at all. Things that seemed to have led right to this, whatever this actually was.

It took a lot of willpower and not a small amount of avoidance to focus on the here, the now, the fact that she could now move a little bit and the sound of the strange, distinctly electronic noises that seemed to be coming from all around her helping her along in her efforts. The light was abating - or were her eyes simply adjusting? Probably the latter.
Everything seemed to be coming easier to her as the minutes passed, her senses waking up, movement returning to her limbs and her thoughts coming easier. Finley focused on her breathing for a moment and then finally, finally she opened her eyes - and promptly realised that somewhere along the way she'd gone batty, because this distinctly looked like something straight out of a sci-fi movie she'd once seen. "Cor," she murmured, voice rusty and eyes about to fall out of her head. But the things she remembered... no, perhaps she hadn't gone batty after all. She felt distinctly that she'd chosen this, somehow, but a lot of her memories seemed to be obscured by blurriness, even if that blurriness did seem to be retreating slowly as the minutes ticked by. But still, what on earth was going on?

Stormy had chosen to go on pod duty in solitude this time. It wasn't that she didn't want company (if anything, she lived off of being near others more than she did being alone), but today the Mist hunter was in a pensive, navel gazing mood: one of those kinds that demanded a person to look at their future and ask what do you want? And as usual, she had a lot of trouble answering.

Luckily for her, someone was waking up. No time to contemplate her existence when someone needed to be introduced to theirs!

Glancing at the lit up name on her monitor, Stormy quickly darted out of the office and down into the rows of pods, a spring in her step and a smile on her face. The new trainee looked a little dazed of course, so she gave the woman some room and hovered just outside of casual conversation distance.

"Hi!" she chirped, hands clasped before her. "Deep breaths, mkay? It's normal to feel woozy and lightheaded coming out of the pod. Take a moment to get used to standing and stuff, I'm in no rush."

totally fine! I'll grab you a ref pic later but imagine Finley being greeted by a 5'2" bald tanned chick with a few visible scars on her scalp and a really bright smile

Instinctively she did as the other woman instructed, still in a bit of a daze. And after a few moments of focusing on her breathing and getting used to her body actually functioning again, Finley was feeling much better.

"That was some right ace advice, that! You do this often?" Her voice had started off a wee bit croaked, but seemed to be getting better as she went, "only, y'know, you don't quite look like a science fiction lab-manager person, you look like a toughie. Or is that just the scars?" She blinked, momentarily stumped by her own question. "Nah, you look totally cool!"

She actually stopped and considered the question for a moment, counting off on her fingers: Finn, Tobias, Oliver, Tuck, Jesse, Arorangi..."Yup!" Stormy replied happily and held up six fingers, then added one. "You make seven. Welcome to Deus, Miss Finley!"

Drawing closer, she fiddled with the pod a little to shut it closed and get it self-cleaning for its future occupant. "Me, a toughie?" She tilted her head and laughed, though she felt vaguely self-conscious of those scars. "Nah, I'm a big ol' Disney softie, but thank you! Call me Stormy. It's nice to meet you," she said, extending her hand to shake. "Not all of us are the labcoat type here, you'll see.

"First things first: your head'll be foggy for a few days, but you'll be just fine afterwards. You'll remember you signed up for this voluntarily since you could see shadows and stuff, right? Deus is a secret military of the same people called hunters who, well, hunt stuff from Halloween and keep the world safe. With me so far?"

"I, er, thank you?" She was still a bit stuck on the seven people thing - this girl was a right veteran! At least seven was a lucky number, though; that definitely counted for something, surely. A good omen! Hopefully.

Finley fidgeted a bit as the other girl did some fancy stuff with the pod that made it make noises and shut closed again. She felt a bit... not insecure, not really, but off. Not quite sure what to do with herself or where to go from here on. Luckily her companion kept on talking, and the brunette forced herself to re-focus on the conversation at hand. "A Disney softie is likely better than being a toughie, anyhow; you probably make more friends that way." And she grabbed Stormy's extended hand with both of her own, giving it an enthusiastic shake before letting go, "it's nice to meet you too! I'm Finley, but you, er, already seem to know that..." How had the other girl known that, come to think of it? It hadn't really registered as something odd at the time, but now Finley's brain made off on a little journey involving cool mind-reading Disney softies who secretly beat up bad guys and saved little old ladies.

Oh! But there was a conversation going on, wasn't there?

"Sorry, I zoned out for a wee bit there." Que awkward laugh. "What were you saying about my head? Before the, um, secret military part. Wait - secret military?" She looked genuinely baffled for a moment before the dots connected, "oh! Oh, of course! Yeah, I totally remember, pardon the brain fart moment. Like super heroes, but a lot less flashy and a lot more stealth-ish, right?" A lot more gritty too, if what she could remember from before being podded was correct. That put Stormy's scars in a somewhat more somber perspective - had she gotten those hunting monsters and scary things like straight out of someone's nightmare, rather than beating up bad, but essentially very human hoodlums trying to mug an old lady?

"It's good to be a mix of soft and tough," she agreed with a sagely nod. "You'll find your balance with some time! But s'okay, there's a lot to take in." She didn't mind Finley's absentmindedness one bit: Stormy remembered how she had thought it was all some dream and talked about airplane food straight out of the pod. Then again, she had been podded for almost a year and a half before waking up...

"Right! I mean I hear we have some contacts of course in the--the world." She almost said "human world" and wondered. "But otherwise, this is a little stretch of the Bermuda Triangle no-one else can detect, yeah. We travel to places via portals. So!" Stormy clapped her hands together. "Lemme give you the run down. We fight with weapons who mentally bond with us and can talk! It's the only way to actually hurt Halloween things because they're made of something called Fear; otherwise it's as good as hitting a fist against a concrete wall. When we're done here, I can take you to the Cove where you'll find yours. Then you'll get your room and coat and find out the division you're in!"

"I hope so. I'll do my best, at least." She nodded, determined to see her words through and find the balance Stormy talked about; she was a bit afraid that at the moment she was probably still more soft than she was tough. But she'd change and learn how to fit in here, because this was all she had left now. So she'd do it. She had to.

Nodding along as the bald woman explained how things went here, Finley made as many mental notes as she could. This was important stuff, stuff that needed to be remembered. "That sounds neat! Can I ask you some things though?" and then before waiting for an answer, she barrelled on, "So, this weapon - is it sci-fi stuff like the pods? Whatsitscalled, an artificial intelligence or so? What's it made of, since it can hurt things made of Fear? And what are the divisions?"

If there was one thing Stormy loved, it was questions. She looked positively delighted to answer them all and clapped her hands again.

"In order! Firstly, totally ask away~ Secondly, sorta! Weapons are people from Halloween who were converted to our cause, mixed in with some sci-fi-ish stuff through weaponization process." She put as much pep as possible into the explanation, because she knew not all weapons were willing participants. "Thirdly, that's why they've got intelligence: it's just the former person able to live vicariously through you. They don't really remember anything of their former lives, but they still have names and personalities and stuff; some of them are real characters," she said with a laugh. "I don't know exactly what they're made of--mostly metal? Fourthly, they've got runes, too, but I think a Life tech could explain those better than I could. And fifthly, there are five divisions!"

She held up a finger for each. "These are really short summaries, you could totally get more info from someone in that division. There's Sun, which is our first line of offense; Moon, which focuses on defense and fortifications; Death, which prioritizes information gathering; Life, which works on consolidating the information for use and handles the infirmary; and Mist, which is the jack of all trades!" Naturally the last in the list was given extra energy, and Stormy pointed to her coat. "We're the ones who have to keep up with all the division work at once. It's tough sometimes, but I never have a boring day. Any more questions?"

She was so ready for more.

When Stormy began answering the questions with good cheer, Finley relaxed the slight tension in her shoulders that she hadn't even noticed she had. So questions were alright, even if they were a super-secret and important organization fighting horror story monsters. That was good!

"Right," nodding along and doing her best to remember everything, she had to admit that it was all a bit overwhelming. Maybe there'd be more questions later, but for now it all seemed to make pretty good sense to her, "thank you! I think that was it, for now anyway. You're really good at explaining things!" She clasped her hands and smiled gratefully at the bald woman - it was dizzying how many things she'd learned about in such a short amount of time since waking up, but Finley felt much better equipped now to handle life after being podded, whatever it might throw at her.

"Glad to help!" Stormy visibly preened, bouncing in place. "No doubt you'll have plenty of more questions pretty soon. Whatever division you end up in, just talk with some people and you'll get settled in fast! We're good at watching our own."

Usually.

She beckoned for Finley to follow her. "Now, time to get you to the cove for your weapon. Then you can start the real journey~"
