                      THE CHOSEN

User ImageName: Davor Kirilovich Kozel
Nickname: Dave, but—please don't
Gender: Male
Age: 43 (7.18 bday)
Occupation: He'll take what he can get
Homeland: Katchia
Residence: Drifting around Western Palisade
Obligatory Man Man Song: Curtains

Appearance
Although not especially tall, Davor's solid frame and broad shoulders give him the appearance of a fighter—or a soldier, as the case may be. A pale scar mars his lips while another trails out from under his shirt collar to just below his jaw, with doubtless many more healed wounds kept hidden under those heavy coats he's always wearing. The conspicuously empty sleeve often hanging limp on his left side is usually what draws the most stares, anyway, not that he seems to notice much. Despite being so rough around the edges, however, Davor can probably be likened more to a sleepy grizzly than a grizzled veteran, softened a bit by the tired, contemplative look of his hooded blue eyes, his bristly beard and short-cropped black hair flecked with grey. His fighting years are behind him, but he still walks in a heavy, purposeful stride with head held high and shoulders squared, nicely concealing how small he really feels.

Personality
To continue the ursine comparisons, it bears(!) getting out of the way and admitting that Davor is... not actually a teddy bear and has his scary side as well. Left wounded by the war back home in more than just a damaged exterior, his usual amiable calm can be shaken up by a small number of things. It's not often an issue, as he can usually peaceably remove himself from any situation that is making him tense, but if things escalate or are too overwhelming, outbursts are not unknown to Davor, to his great shame. The last thing he wants is to hurt another person, as he prefers to be known by his truer gentle and soft-spoken nature.

In fact, Davor has always gone out of his way to seeing that others are tended to, perhaps a by-product of being the eldest child. He tries very hard to be noble, taking great care to be straightforward and honest, but this can sometimes translate to an oblivious sort of callousness. While blunt, he means well, selflessly serving others should he be given the opportunity. Protective of those he calls friends, family, and comrades, he follows loyally—but Davor is also very self-sufficient and independent, at times frustratingly so.

While putting the needs of others first, he tends to be rather uncommunicative about himself. After all, Davor lost his arm because he downplayed just how bad the infection was, not through some heroic war-feat some might assume. Alright, that's a bit of an extreme example (especially considering not much could have been done anyway), but Davor really does hate making trouble for others, to the point that he will keep quiet about his own emotional or physical pain. Any attempts to ask about him will be modestly deflected and, if pushed, if he even suspects pity creeping in, that uncommon harshness will rear its ugly head. Even Davor has that famous stubborn streak the Kozel family was known for. His experiences in Katchia have made him more distant and withdrawn than ever, unfortunately.

Davor's independence lends itself to restlessness, because while he is generally happy helping others, he does not quite know what he wants for himself and will drift away from friends and family alike once he feels he is no longer needed. That isn't to say Davor doesn't enjoy being around others. In fact, he loves travelling and meeting a wide variety of people! He just doesn't know what to do with himself if there is no clear "goal" in mind. In most cases, this is why he is so keen to look after and defend others: simple companionship is a bit harder to provide when he is so anxious within.

Because of this, Davor tends to be a follower in the hopes of finding purpose, clinging to causes and people who lead them, for better or for worse. It would be a mistake to take his quiet and obedient nature for cowardice, however, as he is unflinchingly bold, even when facing new situations, and will take a firm stance if he senses he is being misused. While Davor is no great hero or intellectual, there is more to him than the simple peasant he so often seems.

History
Spoiler'd for being really long in a long enough profile!

For starters, Davor is no simple peasant, as much as he fraternized with the very people he was supposed to have been lording over. The eldest son of an influential noble family back in the small but prosperous country of Katchia, he held much promise, at first. Keeping strongly to the old saying "children should be seen, not heard," even back then Davor was solemn and silent—and actually, he didn't even have the decency to make himself seen, often neglecting his studies and responsibilities to play out in the forest instead. It was there that he learned many of the skills and hobbies he would continue to enjoy as an adult, such as hunting and fishing and... well, not the scholarly pursuits his parents expected of him.

Davor was at least good at taking care of his younger siblings, but the ever-present friction between him and his father Kiril caused a rift that would only grow as the family did. The second son, Dalibor, proved to be just as impetuous and unfit for politics, and the two supported each other once they became grimly aware of just what miserable disappointments they were. The daughter Tihana made things bearable with her affection and optimism, but the loss of her twin dealt a painful blow to the quickly fragmenting family. It seemed the youngest, enthusiastic and ambitious Damir, would become the favored son as Davor and Dalibor teetered on the edge of being all but disowned.

In a desperate bid to find some way to prove himself, Dalibor decided to join Katchia's military, a growing necessity as border disputes became more serious. Naturally, Davor followed, wanting to look after his younger brother as well as he could. They expected to parade about in uniform, see some action but not too much, and come back redeemed as great defenders of their glorious country. Instead, their military careers were marked by disaster—one look at Davor would prove that. No one could say he wasn't eager, at least.

But things only got worse for the brothers as war was officially declared by Okraina, the territorial skirmishes spilling over into an invasion backed by Belastranan might. For years it raged, but really, Davor had stopped paying attention to the passage of time after Dalibor was killed. There was nothing he could do but keep fighting—until he was badly wounded and left to die, as well. He probably would have, had he not been found and taken in by the Order of the Kirghiz Light. Part religion, part rebellion, Davor became an agent of the Light as well as he could in his condition. He was indebted to Kirghiz, and more importantly, unable to face his family after Dalibor's death. He took the bizarre practices in stride, comforted to find another way to belong.

After all the fighting, bringing the countries together again sounded appealing, anyway. Kirghiz continued to organize counter-attacks even after the official Katchian military began to retreat and fight a desperate defense, but the Light's forces were feeble, Katchian morale was low, and practicing even the more mainstream, watered-down form of Kirghiz became dangerous as Okrainan and Belastranan rule took over. The devout retreated to their insular, secret circles, vowing to return someday stronger than ever, and Davor decided to finally return home.

There wasn't much home to return to, as it turned out. His father had been killed in a siege of the district, his sister had fled with her husband to who knows where, and his youngest brother had seemingly disappeared. His mother was certainly glad to see him, but the bad news they both had to share dampened the reunion just a bit. They tried to adjust as well as they could, but eventually, Davor lost his mother to illness (or good ol' heartbreak, he's sure), and he was left alone. He was free to live the life he'd always longed for, cavorting about outdoors and among the people, however many were left, but it brought him no joy.

Just as it seemed Davor was resigned to live the rest of his days in solitude, a letter arrived from his sister, Tihana, desperate to find out what had happened to her family back home, and eager to share details of her new life in Sunderland. Once again, Davor had to be the bearer of bad news, made even more difficult by the fact that, while they got along well enough, they'd never been the closest. Their correspondence was slow and each letter was painful, but it was something. Both siblings were just happy to have someone left.

When Tihana invited Davor to live with her in Sunderland, he only hesitated a little. But there was nothing left for him in Katchia, and he immediately made the journey overseas with what money he had left. It was yet another bittersweet reunion, but his sister was as radiant as ever, his brother-in-law, Vuk, still the charming devil he remembered (though, perhaps, changed in a way he could not quite place), and—what was this? Davor was an uncle? They had a pet deer?

It should have been a wonderful new start, but he could not adjust. He felt like a trespasser in his sister's life, carrying too many dark memories of their old home and old family. The lighter memories were becoming harder to remember, to share and laugh over. Vuk began avoiding him. Their daughter eventually did stop being afraid of him, yes, and they could even get each other to smile, but he decided it would be best to leave despite Tihana's pleading. He assured his sister that they would keep up correspondence, he would stay in the country, and, if he ever needed help of any kind, yes, yes, he knew they were there for him... and with that, they parted amicably enough. There are still a lot of unspoken things between them, but that's probably for the best for now.

Currently
True to his word, Davor has stayed in western Palisade, drifting between jobs and writing when he remembers to do so. It's a bit difficult doing those things when one has only their non-dominant hand to work with, but hey, he'll survive. After all, he's got a Guardian on his side.

Miscellaneous
  • The Old Ways of Sunderland remind Davor very much of the beliefs he's learned as an agent of the Order of the Kirghiz Light. He is enthusiastic about the bond between Chosen and Guardian, but the whole wolf business has him... understandably hesitant. He could probably do with some talking through it all.

  • Having been a soldier for so long, Davor has a whole hell of a lot of combat experience with a whole hell of a lot of weapons, but his skill has been largely diminished by age and injuries. He generally avoids conflict now, but would put up a good fight if need be (and let's hope that's never again).

  • Though Davor's Katchian accent is thick, he's always practicing his Common and gets better every day. Right? His brother-in-law was kind enough to give him a crash course and he's always asking questions of new words he's encountered in the letters he sends. Current favorite word: nidor.

      THE DETAILS

User ImageKatchia
A territory of Belastrana, the Katchia Davor knew was steeped in war with its eternal rival and fellow territory, Okraina. Notable for trying to run its own more democratic government, Katchia was a very political-minded country and once a bastion for free speech—some say Katchia was born of Okrainan writers and philosophers fleeing their more oppressive home, and from there came the infamous, bitter enmity. Compelling! It's small, cold country that was moving towards rapid industrialization, hoping to prosper before being plunged into territorial dispute. Sort of analogous to the Slavic countries in culture and language, inspired by the American Revolution, admittedly a bizarre mix.

Despite its try for a democratic government, Katchia was still rather feudal in system, with clear class distinctions. Only nobles had the liberties of voting, free speech, and so on, peasants widely looked down on for their rampant illiteracy. Ideally, the upper classes would have worked in favor of the common good and their toiling subjects especially. In practice, the upper classes generally tried to keep the status quo or strengthen their own power. While being an intensely nationalistic and proud country that believed in equality for all of Katchia's blessed children, there was some mass hypocrisy going down.

Another dividing factor in Katchian society was the strength of the church. Politics were supposed to be the religion of the country, if you asked some older gentlemen shaking their fists at nobles these days, but the Order of the Kirghiz Light had gained strong influence in the government. The lines between the separation of church and state had become blurred, adding to its instability as constant in-fighting brought measures to a deadlock. It didn't help that many peasants and rural communities had their own wildly divergent beliefs. If the different schools of thought weren't soundly ignoring each other and making their own insular parties, they were fighting viciously for their supremacy in the government.

Davor does not miss Katchia. A part of him feels like a failure.

The Order of the Kirghiz Light
    Quote:
The First-fruits were a common Oblation to their Deities; but the chief Part of their Worship consisted in sacrificiing Animals : And this they did out of a real Persuasion, that their Gods were pleased with their Blood, and were nourished with the Smoke, and Nidor of them; and therefore the more costly, they thought them the more acceptable, for which Reason, they stuck not sometimes to regale them with human Sacrifices.

--1743, Thomas Stackhouse, A Compleat Body of Speculative and Practical Divinity

The political-minded nobility of Katchia's budding democracy were very vocal about decrying the Order of the Kirghiz Light as a dangerous cult built on primitive beliefs. In response, the Light was largely silent. An enigmatic but nonetheless powerful religion, Kirghiz reached rural peasants and those in power alike, uniting the Katchian people in the belief that they—Katchians, Okrainans, Belastranans—were all children of the same motherland that should never have been divided.

Most anyone could become involved on the surface level of Kirghiz, following the basic tenets of common decency and welcoming each other as comrades while remaining mostly ignorant to the more occult side of the Light. Those who delved deeper into Kirghiz, the most devout followers of the angry gods who needed animal sacrifice to be appeased, those who knew the ancient tongues and secret rituals, practicing self-flagellation and feigning madness—those agents of the Kirghiz Light sought power in the government in order to overthrow it, to bring together Her Children once again.

So, yes, perhaps Kirghiz's opposition was right in calling it dangerous, but the agents were careful about keeping the more extreme sides under wraps, content to have a growing, albeit largely ignorant following lending legitimacy to their cause. However, with the collapse of Katchia's government and a less-than-understanding Belastrana taking over, the Light has had to retreat further into secrecy. Kirghiz has grown quiet, but the fight for reunion is not over.

    SPOILERS: ACTUALLY THE ILLUMINATI

It should be noted that, while there is a large pantheon of gods in Kirghiz belief, the chief deities the agents serve are the Harbinger of War and the Bringer of Peace, inextricably linked and no doubt borne from the constant tension the sister lands of Okraina and Katchia have known. It is War that is in fact peaceful, War that fights to defend Her Children from whatever may threaten their lands, not causing strife among them but imbuing them with Her strength so that they may conquer.

But Her Children rebelled when they turned against each other, and thus Peace stepped in, purging them in great numbers as the war between territories raged on. Death is the ultimate gift of Peace, the agents of the Kirghiz Light once intimated to Davor, and maybe they were trying to comfort him. But if they wished to secure a future for their people, they would have have to quell Peace's wrath and stop the in-fighting. The greater gift would be the strength of War to further their power to new lands.

Now that Davor is in a new land, he sees no need to bring the Light to Sunderland. He still thinks about his time as an agent, but not too hard.

[The Choosing] -- Soon

Name: Nidor
Gender: Male
Stage: Fawn

Personality
Despite being just a fawn, Nidor is already proving difficult. He's seemingly inherited his Chosen's independent streak, but on a ruder level, snubbing others with suspicion and distaste. Even Davor is not exempt from being given the cold shoulder on occasion, as Nidor tends to keep his distance even as he follows, seemingly begrudgingly. It's got Davor worried their bond is somehow incomplete or damaged, and he tries to win the fawn over with offerings. These gifts often go ignored.

The Companion

User Image
Harlusha is lucky Davor didn't mind a stowaway in his coat, once he got over the shock of something distinctly warm and living in his pocket when he was only looking for some coin. Since then, they've been inseparable, as the precocious mouse has proven surprisingly affectionate and even helpful with her clever little paws, scuttling after whatever the old soldier may be fumbling with. He likes to think it's genuine friendship that keeps Harlusha around, not just the food he supplies—and he supplies a lot, always saving scraps even if it does look weird to be shoving food into his clothes.
