Liza wasn't too sure about this. Sure, she worked after school in the music department but she'd never had to substitute a class before. The first couple of periods weren't so bad. They took it easy on her aside from a few pranks, but the third class drover her up a wall and she was wondering just how on earth the musical director actually tamed these students. Jazz players, that's what they were. A rowdy bunch that had no respect for her because she was fairly timid because she was nervous.

After that it seemed like the whole school had gone rowdy. By the time she went to the teacher's lounge for her free period before lunch, Liza's nerves were completely frazzled. She just grabbed a cup of coffee and hunched over it while trying to find peace of mind.

"I don't understand," she whispered to herself, brows knitting hard. How could they be such difficult children? The girls and Crystal certainly never gave her this much trouble! Then again, most of them liked music and were taking advanced courses when they weren't in school anyway. The short haired woman sighed and just took a sip from the weak, watery coffee and wrinkled her nose.

Two things announced Eleanor’s arrival to the staff room. The first was the delicious smell of hot brownies straight from the oven and the second was the familiar sound of papers dropping the floor. They fluttered every which way, covering the floor in the shoddy work of thirty or so students. At least she’d managed to save the brownies, which was some consolation to the Home Ec teacher.

"I’m so sorry," Eleanor announced the room in general, even if she really hadn't inconvenienced anyone but herself. "I’ll clean this up right away, I’ll just…" She stepped carefully around and over the papers to reach the only other occupant of the lounge. "Good afternoon!"

She placed the plate of brownies on the table and smiled. "I don’t think we've met. I’m Eleanor. Please help yourself."

Liza's head snapped to the door at the smell of brownies and the sounds of papers dropping to the floor. Getting out of her chair, she waved her had at the apology. "No, no! Don't be silly, I'll help you." The woman just smiled and laughed a little, looking at the brownies before holding her hand out. She still looked frazzled, but a little more calm when another teacher entered. "I'm Elizabeth. Call me Liza. I think I will after I clean up the papers."

Shaking Eleanor's hand firmly, she side stepped and headed over to clean up the papers. "I think I'll be taking a brownie while I can. ..Are all the kids so.. noisy and rowdy? I mean, I remember treating subs differently, but never like that." Nevermind she finished school only a few years ago!

"Oh no, that’s very kind of you, but you really don’t have to," Eleanor said after they’d shaken hands. She hurried over to crouch alongside her fellow teacher, gathering up the scattered papers. "Thank you Liza. My name is Eleanor."

She was pulling papers into a neat pile on her knees when Eliza mentioned the students being rowdy and she couldn't help but chuckle. "You know how they can be. If they can get away with messing around for the new teacher, they will." Eleanor adored all the students at school, but even she had to admit they could be trouble sometimes.

"I’m lucky. Most of them are happy to cook and don’t misbehave."

"Yes, you said your name before..." Liza just gave her a laugh and chalked it up to tiredness and frayed nerves. Every teacher had them, didn't they? Still, she cleaned up the papers, stacked them neatly and handed them back to the other woman.

"I suppose.. Ah, you're the Home Ec. teacher? I always loved that class. I learned how to make cheddar garlic biscuits once. Forgot the recipe but they were good. What I do remember and a fairly good at, if I do say so myself, is cakes." Dusting her hands off, Liza pushed a hand through her short hair, fussing it up and making it stick up every which way before taking her seat again. "You baked these?" She asked, gesturing to the brownies. They literally smelled like heaven.

“Oh yes I did, of course, sorry.” She flushed bright red, taking the stack of papers with a grateful bob of her head. Even if she’d entered the room with a smile and claimed her class was fairly well behaved, there were a few who simply refused to take part and seemed to enjoy making her feel awkward.

“I am indeed.” She carefully placed the papers down on the table; keeping one hand pressed flat against them as if afraid they’d suddenly fly away. “It’s a wonderful role. There’s something about good cooking that can make anyone smile.”

Eleanor sat down as well, one hand still on her papers and looked at Liza with bright eyes. “Really? You should start baking again. There’s nothing quite so calming, especially on a cold day. I bet you’d make beautiful cakes.” She nodded, smiling. “Yes, I did make them. They're nothing special but I do hope you enjoy them.”

"Oh, no no no. It's fine, really!" Liza laughed a little and gave a little shrug. "Teaching tends to frazzle the mind after a certain time without coffee, right?" The woman laughed a little more and just reached out to take one of those brownies onto a napkin and sighed.

"Oh, God no. Who has the time anymore? I'm taking college courses, I'm teaching after school, subbing in my spare time. I don't have much free time anymore! Weekends are dedicated between home work and house work and it's a nightmare. I miss being a teenager where all I worry about is what to wear." Slowly, Liza took a bite of the brownie and made a pleased little noise. Her weak spot was sweets when she wasn't eating eggs and cheese. Licking her lips a little afterwards, she looked at Eleanor over before grinning. "These are really... good. I haven't had fresh baked brownies in a while."

Eleanor laughed softly and pushed a stray bit of hair behind her ears. "That’s true. Sometimes my husband tells me my job looks easy, but I doubt he’d last one minute in a classroom." It didn’t help that he didn’t like children.

"Oh gosh. You’re so busy! That’s very impressive." Her eyes went wide with admiration. "I know your dedication will pay off soon and you’ll be able to relax. Don’t stress yourself out too much in the meantime."

She tried not to look too eager for a reaction as Liza went to try the brownie, and when the reaction was a good one, her smile was like sunshine.

"I’m so glad! I trained as a chef before taking this job and would gone further into patisserie if I’d stayed on, but teaching suited me more."

"Husband, hm? How many years?" Liza was always envious of people who were married. It meant they found that special someone. Grinning a little, she ran a hand through her hair before eating the rest of the brownie with a low hum. She could get seriously addicted to these.

"Mm. I like to keep busy. Staying still isn't my strong suit, which is why, despite being frazzled right now? I like teaching. I like subbing. I just need to figure out how to calm the kids down." She laughed a little and waved a hand in front of her face before humming. "Mmm... So Home Ec. is just perfect for you. You can do both."

"Six years now," Eleanor replied with a fond smile. "But we met well before that at university. He was my first real relationship. I’d never met anyone like him before." She grabbed one of the brownies and turned it over in her hands a few times before nibbling on the edge.

"Oh, I know!" She gave the brownie a triumphant little wave through the air. "What if I bake something for your class? I guess it’s a bit like bribery but as long as it works, right? Though my real advice is just not to get too frazzled and don’t pay attention to their antics. They’re just looking to see how you react."
