I guess back story clues like that are missed when you don't keep up on the out of game lore

He is spoken of in the Calling which is a seriously amazing read, not only does it tell you Alistair's mother it also let's you read Duncan's life within the Warden's and why he is apart of them. I recommend reading it on the Wiki. It's just a rough run down version of the story.
