Gainesh rarely traveled this far away from the forest. He was used staying in large old-growth forests, and sometimes up to the coniferous forests in the mountains. But deserts, never. If he didn't have to be here he wouldn't. The first day Gainesh had tried to fly during the day, but the unbearable sun had soon deterred him of the idea. Instead he took to the sky after dusk, when the temperature plummeted and the moon came out as a guide. Currently he was alone. His two companion's had stayed behind in the forest...both had come down with a sickness. A terrible sickness that had swept the land. But there was a cure. The rare blue well cactus flower had been known to cure the ailment. So here Gainesh was, scouting the desert for a cactus he had never before seen.

Eyes scanning, Gainesh peered at every cactus as he glided above the desert floor. His silent wings beating every now and then to keep him aloft. He knew that soon he'd need to break off from the search and spend some time hunting. Without stamina he'd be useless to his friends.

Bonebreaker's belly was full from his gorging; having found where a young bison had succumbed to a broken leg; he had been following the poor beast for days as he struggled. It was hard for most to understand, but Marrow actually admired the heart - when dying many just gave up and waited for him to come. This one, this one had fought hard.

But it wasn't enough.

He feasted as much as he could before tucking some of the larger bones into his thick feathers, planning on eating them later. As he walked, too burdened to fly at the moment, he let his eyes look up into the clear desert sky. His eagle eyes narrowed; someone was nearby - gliding silently in the air. He curiosity was piqued, but he didn't try to approach; his stench gave him away long before he could be seen.

Gainesh's nose was the least effective of his senses. His eyes and ears were much more handy for the owl Hippogryph. That didn't stop him from catching a whiff of something decaying. The stench indicated that whatever had died had been out for a while. Gainesh adjusted his flight slightly, angling towards the malodor. Even if it was already dead there may be a chance that something living was also going to investigate. And perhaps, it would be something that Gainesh could eat.

As Gainesh flew a little closer his golden eyes scooped out the area, immediately tracking to a few shapes that stood out amongst the desert sand. One appeared to be a pile of bones, picked clean. The second, a bird-like creature, probably the one who had just finished feeding.

Gainesh pondered. Would it be best to leave the creature be? It certainly looked intimidating, and who knew whether it would want company or its next meal. On the other hand, it appeared more desert oriented than Gainesh. Now that he had gotten closer, Gainesh recognized the Vulture-like appearance on the creature. It might have a better idea where to find the elusive blue well cactus. Decision made, Gainesh dived, tucking in his wings and then snapping them out before he hit the ground. His landing was as silent as his flight, as he set down before the creature.

Marrow Bonebreaker's golden eyes widened slightly as the creature landed nearby; it was exceedingly rare when anyone approached him; many thought he was a skinwalker but even those with enough sense to realize that wasn't the case usually avoided him because of the nearly tangible cloud of death and decay that wafted from his feathers. Unseen under his thick mane of feathers, his equine ears perked forward as the thing landed; so graceful and quiet and with a air of confidence and mystery that piqued Bonebreaker's curiosity even more.

The other, like him, was covered in feathers; even moreso. He almost was an unrecognizable as a Soquili as he, though his size and back hooves meant there was no mistake. He gave a nod in greeting, his muscles still clenched with uncertainty, but he didn't turn away.

Gainesh's eyes took in the creature before him, paws, claws and feathers. He had seen Vultures before, but this creature seemed to be a strange mix of bird and cat...but with the musculature of a soquili. Though slightly puzzled by the creature's origin, the fact that it didn't attack him immediately pleased Gainesh. And now that he was so close to the creature, the owl realized that the stench that had drawn him in wasn't in fact the creature's meal, but actually the creature itself. Mildly amused at his own assumption, Gainesh's beak curved upward into a smile as he gave a formal bow in return to the creature's nod. "Greetings, I am Gainesh, currently herd-less. You stride this valley wing-brother?"

Marrow Bonebreaker could hardly keep the surprise off his face. So much so, that his eyes narrowed in suspicion. Was this some kind of a trick? Of some kind of a game? He snorted and shook his head, causing a ruffle of scents to break free some the crusty feathers on his neck.

But he was smiling. He had no good reason to suspect that he was up to no good; just personal experience. But he also couldn't deny that he was finding himself a bit excited to have company - to talk to someone else for once. He hoped he remembered how to do so...

"Marrow Bonebreaker," he said, his voice dry and soft. "I have no herd," he said, like it was the most ridiculous things he ever heard; a heard of death-eaters like himself. He couldn't even imagine. "I'm just passing through," he said. "I mean, I just go wherever there is food I guess."
