Her skin kept shivering as she made her way through the herd members, doing her best not to step on anyone elses hooves or small critters milling about. She also attempted to be as small and unnoticeable as she could manage, which River felt she was doing a pretty good job at. A few herd members greeted her here and there, to which she nodded shyly in return. But she had a specific Soq she was in search of. One she wanted to talk to and hopefully get some answers as to what... might be expected of her.
River inhaled and exhaled slowly, ears perking up as she lifted her head, spotting a blue mare just up ahead. Picking up her pace, she felt a small sense of relief as she recognized Yayo'jin. The mare she was seeking! And a fellow healer.
"M-Miss... Y-y... Yayo'jin?" She inquired, having made sure no one else was in need of the other mare at the moment. "I-I... I hope I-I'm not b-being a bother." The grey unicorn hunched in on herself, giving Yayo'jin a small smile. "I-I was... w-wonder if w-we could talk?" She wanted to know if this was what she would need to expect in the khalasar life. Having Kalona harm others like Zanza? Fighting wasn't something she hadn't seen. She just had never been this close to the end results. But she wanted to do everything she could. And understanding what would be needed of a healer such as herself and Yayo'jin was step one!

Yayo'jin grazed idly, more out of boredom than hunger. On most days she'd be ranging apart from the herd at this hour, looking for the healing herbs that she needed for her stores. Today she had considered it, but after talking with the guards had decided not to. Though they had seen no sign of any other murderous kalonas in the area after Zanza's defeat, even Yayo'jin saw the sense in being extra cautious for some time.
Her snake familiar Qiaga dozed against her where she coiled around Yayo'jin's neck. Yayo'jin gave the snake a rare fond smile. Though most soquili seemed to find reptiles eerie or distasteful, Qiaga had been an excellent companion to Yayo over the years. She might have gotten even more lost in thought if she hadn't heard a small voice speaking her name.
Chagrinned at having been caught in a soft moment, Yayo'jin immediately composed her features as she focused on River Nocturna. She really wasn't sure why River looked so frightened to speak with her, but she had seen similar behavior often enough to know it wasn't unusual for her.
"Now is fine to talk," she said simply. "What do you need?"

Being as timid and nervous to speak with others as she was, River didn't notice she'd interrupted a private moment between mare and familiar. If she had, there would have been no talking. She'd have been so embarrassed that her stuttering would have gotten the better of her! But Yayo'jin had acknowledged her and now she had no choice but to reply and attempt to ask her questions.
"I... I-It's n-nothing serious." River murmured, glancing shyly at the snake wrapped around the other mares neck but not seeming bothered by it. "S-Since I'm new... t-to the k-khalasar, I-I... was wondering... i-if s-something like... Zanza... is normal?" Hunting Kalonas. Being attacked. Was that what it meant to be in a herd? It was her experience thus far with them. "I-I'm not... s-sure what i-is truly expected of me." She added, letting her head duck down a little embarrassed.
And she probably wasn't making any sense! Curse her stuttering! Yayo'jin intimidated her a little, she would admit. But the uni mare admired the other healer. "I-I am a healer, I know. B-But... " What was she to expect in this new life?

Yayo'jin frowned a little at that question. She could understand why River was concerned. The encounter with Zanza had been... unsettling, at the very least. It was the sort of thing that Yayo'jin had spent some time thinking about herself, wondering whether she should stay with the group or leave in attempt to find safer company.
"Not too unusual, no," she said in her deep and accented voice. She had shed many of the speaking patterns she had learned in her trollish homeland, but the accent remained. "We travel so many places, I think we're more likely to run into bad soquili," she said. That was the conclusion she'd come to about the relatively high number of dangerous situations the herd found itself in. "Before I joined, they passed through a skinwalker's territory and found a dead usdia, I think. After I joined," her voice grew cold at the memory. "We found a foal skinwalker. It escaped. And then there was the damn kalona." She flicked her tail derisively in memory of Zanza.
"If you are a healer, you will get a lot of work in this group," she added dryly.

Her tail twitched a little nervously as she regarded the blue mare, hoping she hadn't asked any question that was silly. It was just what had been nagging at her mind and, well, Yayo'jin was the only one she felt was a good person to ask. The encounter with Zanza had definitely frightened her. And she feared for more like him. Yet she knew, as a healer, that it was unavoidable in most cases.
River gave a soft sigh, ears drooping just a little. "I-It was w-what I feared." She murmured, finding that strange accent a little soothing. It wasn't like it was any worse than her stuttering! She gave the mare a thoughtful nod, glancing back up at her. "That is... t-true." And her previous herd had gone through its fair share of difficult Soquili. Her eyes widened as Yayo'jin continued. "D-Dead?" She whispered. Oh goodness! The poor usdia. She had yet to encounter anyone after they had passed on, and feared for when she'd be faced with such a difficult task. However skinwalker's were certainly worse then a rogue kalona.
The uni mare just stared at Yayo'jin, not even sure what to say as her mind soaked in everything. From the sounds of it, this herd was going to be quite interesting, to say the least. And probably dangerous. "D-Do you ever have... d-doubts about b-being in danger?" She asked quietly.
