((Rock Loot Rolls))

Of course, it was just the six of them. Tohru doubted that six two-leggers wandering through the mountains would attract much Mara attention. He wasn't that great at geography, or anything, but as long as they kept away from the Maralan Project area, they should expect to see less of those strange, legless creatures, right? "It's not just that," Cela murmured, drawing the Kiandri's attention to her. The usually peppy and cheery girl had grown steadily more silent over the past few days, as they spent more time near the port. "We were supposed to meet someone here, but with all this happening... Oh, I hope he's okay."

Vega patted the smaller girl's shoulder. "That's what we're doing. We're going to find him. No matter what we have to blow out of our way to do it. Together we can take on any number of those magical things."

"Wait, so, where precisely are we headed?" And why was Tohru going with them? Besides the fact that he literally had nowhere else to go, and this group actually made it seem like his presence was useful, despite the fact that he'd done nothing to help them. He absently tugged on a strip of bandage that hung somewhat more loosely around his arm.

Zera blinked back at him. "Tohru, keep up with what we're saying, would you? Taliuma. Our other friend, Ash was supposed to meet us here. But after all of this, we don't think he managed to make it out of Taliuma. he was supposed to take a ferry from there to here, but... It seems unlikely that the Mara would be letting too many boats out of port."

Tohru's golden orbs widened. Taliuma? That was on the other side of Eowyn, literally hundreds of miles of mountains and desert stood between them and the other port. Not to mention all the Mara that would be flying about. They may be attacking cities and clusters of Magescians, but they still originated from somewhere, and that meant they were probably still streaming out of the Maralan Project area... They could see any number of Mara between here and Taliuma! Tohru gave a nervous swallow. "It doesn't... really seem like a good idea..." he murmured hesitantly.

"We don't have much of a choice." Tohru glanced to the side to see one of the hybrid twins speaking, either Atris or Niteo. He still couldn't tell them apart, and still wasn't entirely sure what gender they classified with... They looked feminine, but didn't actually have any, erm... Womanly bits... Not that he was one to be able to talk about feminism, anyway... "If we stay, the Mara will attack the port, anyway."

"We'll have to fight them no matter where we go," the other twin chimed in.

"Either way, we're damned if we do,"

"Damned if we don't. We may as well not waste our time sitting about when we can still be trying to meet up with Ash."

"Yeah, I feel bad for the guy. We left him all by himself... Who knows what's happening to him..." The twins sighed and looped an arm around each other. Tohru stared at them curiously, eyes widened and innocent. These two... The whole group was strange, really, but these two were of particular interest to the little Kiandri. It wasn't as if he didn't know what twins were, but he'd never actually met anyone like them before. They really could be one person walking about in two bodies... Very strange. Mesmerizing, even.

"Right." Tohru's gaze snapped back to Vega. "We lose nothing by going in search of one of our own. This family sticks together! For the most part."

It sounded great in theory. As a unit, they seemed to have all their bases covered if they were attacked. The whole lot of them (with the exception of Tohru and Cela, of course) had wings, even if Vega was the only one strong enough to use hers to fly. She made a perfect scout, and could even head up an attack with her powerful physical attacks. Zera could slow and kill any Mara with her ice magic, and Cela was a great medic when someone took on an injury. He still wasn't entirely certain of the twins' powers. They both seemed to be duel mages, so the powers of light and darkness combined probably had reasonable attack force as well. And Tohru was... probably useless among all that, to be honest.

Either way, Tohru was about to get a feel for what his new 'family' could really accomplish together. They'd hardly made it out of the city before a group of incoming Mara spotted them trying to evacuate. The cluster of attackers were just as diverse as the Magescians they faced, and the two groups even appeared to be relatively even in number, so... For obvious reasons, Tohru didn't sense a lot of fear from his own group. They were crazy at best or deliriously insane at worst.

"So." Vega adjusted her gloves, snapping a few buttons into place before taking up a stance. "Who wants to start?"

It was probably a rhetorical question, but something whizzed past Tohru's ear from behind, making him squeak and recede from the abrupt sound. As he moved back, Zera took his place, her bow drawn and ready after firing her first shot. The Kiandri peeked around her to see if she'd actually hit anything, only to find that one of her arrows had lodged in the thick body of a Rock Mara. Where the arrow protruded from it, ice crystals blossomed, spreading across its frame until Vega dove forward, shattering it with one punch.

And then there was a volley of magic and arrows and stone that Tohru would've given anything to be out of. he thought maybe he could stick next to Cela, since she was possibly the least violent of the group... Even with only five other people there, the absolute chaos and turmoil that was happening made her impossible to pick out through all the blasts and wisps of magic being shot about. Never mind if he could actually reach her or not.

Tohru swallowed and back-peddled, deciding to distance himself from the fray as much as he could. The five of them would be fine. Right now, he was just in the way as he sat in the midst of this scuffle doing nothing to help anyone. He whimpered as his golden gaze shot around in search of a way out that didn't cross between the warring parties. The overwhelming feeling of being trapped was starting to creep in on him. He didn't want to get hurt and didn't want to see anyone else hurt. He just wanted out-

Something hooked around his foot, and he went sprawling to the ground with a yelp of terror. A pair of brown boots thundered past his face. Feet, that meant it was one of his. He scrambled a few feet away, clawing across the ground with no small degree of desperation. Only once he felt slightly more safe did he flop onto his back to see the commotion.

Vega had her legs wrapped around the body of one of the Mara. Tohru could hardly identify the exact type with the large woman in his way, but it looked to be at least partially made of stone. Whichever type it was, it could take more than one punch straight to the head and still be holding on. Vega berated it with blows while Cela called upon her plant magic to restrain one of its arms. The other arm was missing entirely, with only a few crystal shards around the shoulder area to show who'd claimed it.

"Okay, lesse..." Someone grabbed the back of his shirt collar from behind and hauled him up. Tohru whined in protest, but somewhere in the back of his mind, he realized it was a Magescian's doing, rather than another Mara. Hands dusted him off. Four of them. And then he was met with a face. "You're fine," one of the twins told him.

"Just a bit scuffled," the other added in his ear.

"But hey, you just can't stand about like that." It sounded as though Vega's pounding of the Mara was drawing to a close as the first twin continued. "It makes you look silly."

"It makes you look like a target."

"Anyway, next time you should just... Pick someone to stick next to. Doesn't matter who."

The second twin looped his arms around Tohru's neck from behind, making the Kiandri wish he had the ability to melt into the ground forever. "It'll be easier for us to keep track of you that way. Dun worry about fighting if you're scared. We won't let anything bad happen to you."

"Probably."

"Yeah, probably."

If it was meant to be reassuring, it had... well, a little bit of success. The twins were strange, but they seemed alright. And if looking at the others around him was any indication, they seemed to be mirroring the thoughts of their other friends. Tohru took a gulp of calming air and nodded. "You're right. I'm sorry. I'll be better next time."
