This little colt's conscience was eating at him pretty bad as of late. He didn't know what was right and what was wrong or if there was even such a thing anymore. There were a few things he did know for sure and that kept him almost balanced. But there were days like today where he would get extremely confused and lost in himself and the world around him. He almost didn't know up from down or light from dark. It all almost blended together because his mother taught him about all of the good, light and positive things in the world. While he heard things about negativeness and bad things happening, terrible and evil things. He was warned to stay away from the darkness and shadows but that was just silly. It always got dark at night, and that was where the conflict began.

He couldn't do right by everything and what his mother warned him about, he wanted to stay safe but what was it he should really fear? The argument went on and on inside his head as he continued to walk through the open meadow. Keir felt nice and safe in the meadow, there was no where that anything could hide unless it was small enough to hide in the grass. If that was the case, he could take it on with ease. At least that was what his ego and confidence allowed him to think. He wasn't as big and bad as he wanted to believe himself to be though. He was fooling himself and everyone he cared about, letting them think that he was neutral and that he was being careful.

Being so young and not understanding how things really work, he was starting to lose the thin ground he was trying so hard to stand on. He had started to walk around in circles in the meadow, not caring if anyone saw him or if he disturbed someone. He was trying to find an answer for what was bothering him. He couldn't really go to Vanya for help because she would just tell him to believe in the light and the good in the world. He needed someone that would be honest with him and tell him how things really are in the world. But where could he find someone like that?

Adalind had almost made herself a nest among the tall, swaying grasses of the meadow. Her varying dark and light coloring allowed her to blend in easily with the foliage and she used her natural abilities to disappear into the meadow and into her work. What work did a young filly have some may wonder. Adalind was committed to learning about the world around her. She entered this realm in a somewhat unusual way. She and her sister had been found as baskets by their parents, and while they both did look like the stallion and mare that took them in, Adalind longed to learn more about why she was, where she had come from, and...just how much she was like her parents.

Her father had been born with a curse. He saw things. He didn't like to talk about it much but...he couldn't really hide it. Out of no where he would still, his breathing almost halting, and stare intently at a spot - looking down some unknown foe. If she or her sister were near the spot he would gently, but firmly, direct them away (honestly it was the only time she'd ever heard her father talk sternly to anyone). After a while their father would rejoin them, looking weary and drained. She never knew what actually happened in the time between, but if her mother was nearby the mare would rush to her father and he didn't look nearly as tired as he did otherwise.

All these events and the odd story of her birth inspired Adalind to look to the world around her for answers. While she explored as much of the area near her family's clearing as she could without her parents (mainly her father) worrying too much, she frequently came back to this spot - as a way to clear her head. Her nest was near a viper pit - poisonous snakes, very dangerous, she knew. But even though the snakes were dangerous and generally feared by the soquili population, Adalind saw something beyond that. They swirled together, an unending mass - but they did not harm one another, only those that threatened their colony. Adalind always made sure to maintain a respectful distance and was watchful when in the presence of these impressive animals. She admired their versatility - how they could both climb and crawl with ease and somehow navigate the realms beneath the earth. She also watched how they grew old, but then shed their skins - becoming like new again. They seemed to care for one another and to her represented a quiet, inner strength. The filly felt a kinship to these often misunderstood creatures. So many saw them as monsters to be feared, but she knew differently. They were fine, as long as you didn't cross them.

Keir was fussing over himself and where he could find someone to share his view of the world with but he was at a loss. A rather long sigh came from him as he stopped walking around in a frustrated circle. He instead started to wander through the meadow again. There had to be someone around close that he could get a connection with and could share knowledge.

There were strange noises coming from the meadow, the closer he got to the center. It was starting to make him curious as to what it could possible be making such a noise. He had never heard such a strange noise that he could remember. Should he avoid it or continue towards it? Keir halted in his steps as the noise seemed to get angry and much louder. His heart started to beat faster with panic. Was his life in danger by an invisible force?

Adalind watched the other small horse with a mixture of curiosity and...well, annoyance honestly. The vipers were all in a tizy now because someone had gotten a little too close to their nest. So much for observations and time for reflection. With an intruder so close the vipers had just become incredibly dangerous, even to her. It was time to leave and she had to get that silly colt out of there too. She figured he hadn't seen her yet which meant she had to be careful about this next part. She didn't need to spook the fellow and hive him dive forward. He would be heavy to drag out of the meadow and she didn't really think there were any helpful unicorns left around (her mother was convinced that horn was for fighting and had challenged any uni she came across to battle - they lost more neighbors that way).

So when she spoke, it was softly, but firmly, much as her father did during one of his visions, "You need to back away Slowly Now."

The poor colt was confused even more by the situation he found himself in and what to do to get himself out of it when he heard a voice. It startled him even more than the weird noise but it was a voice he recognized to be normal. It was something that he recognized and it wasn't so strange to him even though he didn't know who was talking to him. He looked around briefly trying to find the source before doing what he was told.

Keir didn't really want to listen to a stranger unless he was introduced to them first but the situation demanded otherwise. As he backed away from where he stood as slowly as he possibly could, he noticed that the noise was growing louder. It was starting to scare him all the more, he had done what was asked of him. "What's going on? I'm kind of scared.." His voice trailed off and he continued to slowly back away. His amber eyes looked around trying to find the one responsible for his safety. Were they in harms way?

Adalind swiftly followed after the colt and continued to nudge him along as he slowed. "Let's give them a little more room," she said softly. "They get a little upset when you get too close to them and they're faster than you'd think."

He didn't have to look long because she appeared on her own within seconds. He judged her on her actions and words, he was starting to think that she had more experience with this type of thing than he did and probably ever would in his life. "You know from experience don't you?" He spoke the words but with a more curious tone, he had to learn more about the one that just saved his life.

"I'm Keir Drexel Airay but you could call me whatever is easier for you. I know it is a mouthful.." He was almost a little shy because it felt like her blue eyes were staring into his soul. She almost looked like something that would cause him harm if it wasn't for the fact that she had just saved him. "Er whats your name?" He was hoping to redeem himself by knowing her name, maybe it would put him more at ease somehow. But really he was starting to realize that he was getting emotional over nothing. They had just met and she saved him, there was nothing more or less to it right?

"Observation," she corrected him. "I've learned about them through observation. One doesn't have to be bitten to know it shall hurt, but to begin to understand their nature does take a little more time and study." She sized up the colt and shook her head. What was this fuffy foal doing all the way out here. It was Dangerous, as her father frequently told her, and certainly no place for some innocent little child (of course she did not count as innocent or as a child - Adalind knew she was quite different from others and was comfortable in the fact).

She nodded slowly as he introduced himself, silently agreeing that, yes, his name was a bit of a mouthful. But so was hers.... "Call me Adalind," she stated plainly, selecting to omit any mention of her family name. Though the name did well to describe her nature, it was not worth adding to the colt's confusion. The poor fellow seemed overwhelmed enough as it was. "Um...Keir," she began deciding to stick with his first name attempting to keep things simple. "What on earth were you doing out here?"

"Do you spend all of your days here then?" He was starting to get more of an idea on how this filly was personality wise or he could just be assuming. "Thank you very much for saving me Adalind, I owe you." Keir owed her a great deal for what she did for him but he wasn't going to admit that much out loud. He swayed his tail and looked at her with his amber eyes, debating on if he should be honest with her or not.

"Well..I'm not really sure of anything anymore. I don't really know what is right or wrong anymore, it is like everything has turned gray on me and I can't figure out the difference." He decided that even though he had just met Adalind, there was no sense in being dishonest. She had saved him so he owed her honesty and an explanation for what he was really trying to do out here. "I was just wandering around trying to clear my head and somehow figure out the answer." He said it like it was easy but it was more complicated and he was overwhelmed. He had no idea how to even start to try and figure out what to do first to sort out his thoughts and feelings.

Adalind held her tongue while the colt explained himself, though it was somewhat difficult (when with her family she and her sister had a habit of just blurting things out, but that didn't seem wise outside of close familiar relationships). "Keir, darling - regardless of your reasons for wandering you really must be more careful. Taking a stroll into a viper pit might solve all your problems very quickly, but it will make a nasty mess in the process."

Her short tail flicked as she considered his situation. "As for right and wrong..." she laughed softly. "I'm afraid I'm not the best counsel on such things. From what I've seen few moral compasses consistently point true north. It's really a matter of what you can live with. Some time ago I couldn't live with the though of some foolhardy colt being devoured by serpents who were truly only trying to protect their nests. No matter how much some long to label them as so, the snakes are not evil, nor are you - but that would have been a disastrous event regardless."
