Resupply Mission 5A Location: General Groceries Images:: x, x, x. General debriefing: With portals more or less back up and running, Deus Ex is in sore need of supplies. As the island is currently unable to sustain life and not all hunters know how to hunt or fish AND with the holiday season coming up, it has been decided to have hunters scavenge food from a place they're familiar with: a grocery store. Care has been taken to ensure that hunters do not visit a General Groceries in or near their home towns; civilian outfits requested, leave your coats on the island. Hunters have also been granted a $300 budget. To share. * E class difficulty level (must have a team of three, at least one of them must be an intermediate trainee)
MECHANICS
* MECHANICS: RP assembling a team, as necessary, before heading towards the Lighthouse portal to request a portal to Resupply Mission 5A. Once there, roll a 100-sided dice and match the roleplay to the results below, as well as any reactions. * Shopping Cart: The mission starts with an empty cart: 0/100 units. When you roll a dice, you will either gain or lose units OR items. Keep track of what items you've picked up AND how many units they're worth. The team shares the same budget, however it is up to you and your group whether you want to share a shopping cart. Sharing means you're unlikely to go over the budget, but you're also not going to bring as much back... * Players can continue rolling until any of the players roll a CASHIER, in which case the CHECK OUT begins. See below for check out mechanics. Your cart can also hold 100 units of food. When you reach this (or go over) proceed directly to the CASHIER.
1 - 5: The produce section of the store is pretty decent. And hunters do need a balanced diet. Pick up 5 units of produce.
6 - 10: This store has a section of barrels. It's not too surprising at first until a chorus of screaming kids alert you to the presence of candy. There are clear plastic bags nearby and scoops, so why not satisfy your inner child and add five units to your cart. As in five fully filled bags.
11 - 20: The cart you pick suddenly loses its wheel! Your cart tips over and spills everything out. After grabbing another cart and loading it up with your pile of goods, it seems to be a bit... lighter. Lose the FIRST three items you picked up.
21 - 25: Somehow you "accidentally" wind up in the soda pop aisle. While making your way through it, your inner teenager gives into the colorful labels and you somehow wind up with five cases of canned soda. Add them to your cart, you soda junkie.
26 - 30: You discover the health and beauty section of the store. Shamelessly you pick up some non-Beach soap and shampoo, and other health and beauty products. Add five units to your cart.
31 - 35: It looks like you're in one of those fancy supermarkets. Or the state you're in possibly legalized it, but it looks like a large section of the store has turned into a mini brewery which offers a vast array of alcohol. You add 5 units to your cart.
As you're purchasing the alcohol, a clearly underaged teenager slides up to you and asks if it wouldn't be too much trouble to purchase some for them, too. Do you agree?
Yes:
Roll 1d10. If Even:
Nothing special happens. If you make it out of the store WITH alcohol, -1 unit however you gain + $20 for your pocket.
In addition, when you return a hunter of a higher rank compliments you on your sneaky ways and gives you a bonus of $50. They also seem to help themselves to one of your booze units, but they're long gone before you realize it.
If Odd:
Turns out it was part of a sting operation! You're arrested on the spot, and your division lead has to come bail you out of jail. You are now banned from doing this EM for two IRL weeks. You also are deducted $100 from your personal paycheck.
36 - 40: As you turn to grab an item and maybe debate with your teammates on what to get next, someone helps themselves to the cart. Lose the last three items you picked up.
41 - 50: Another turn in the store leads you to the pasta aisle. You can't go wrong with ramen, right? Add 20 boxes of pasta to your cart.
51 - 60: A group of rambunctious children races by, some in the cart and others pushing it. They narrowly avoid slamming into you. However, they don't seem to avoid the rather large display of promotional pet food that comes raining down onto you! Unintentionally add 10 cans of pet food to your cart; you thought you got them all too...
61 - 65: You know what every kitchen needs? A giant cheese wheel! Too bad it takes up 10 units by its sheer size alone.
66 - 70: You know what else the Deus Kitchen needs? A non-runic Happy Hot Dog Man. Add one to your cart. It would've come with a free catsup critter and mustard monster, but as soon as you pick it up a kid yells "IT'S KETCHUP!" and runs off with it.
71 - 75: You hear the cackling of teenagers with too much time on their hands while in the dairy aisle. Before you can do anything, one of them happens to chuck a giant milk carton at you before running off. Your character is now dripping milk and will start to reek badly. Though if you haven't been taking advantage of the beach soap, the smell of milk manages to make you smell more like a decent human being. Not to mention you've just lost three units of each of your last three items due to gross milkage.
76 - 80: As you move to compare two items, a frustrated mother trying to wrangle several kids accidentally walks off with your cart! By the time you track them down and return their cart to them, you realize that some of your items are missing. Lose two units of all of your acquired things.
81 - 85: At the meat counter, you spend some time considering what to get. Given the popularity of meat on the island, you decide to stock up. Add 10 units to your cart.
86 - 90: You know what's next to the meat? Seafood. You know what's part of seafood? Crab legs and lobsters. Someone's going to be eating fancy tonight on someone else's budget! Add 5 units to your cart.
91 - 100: CASHIER; CUE CHECK-OUT: - Either your cart has hit 100/100 capacity or you've had enough of the holiday rush, but you're now in line for check-out. After a bit of waiting (and being tempted by the gum -- +1 unit of gum if your cart isn't at max capacity).
- In addition, if you have room in your cart, you have the choice to purchase cigarettes. Not only is smoking a bad habit, but it's one you can easily exploit back on Deus... You can choose to add 5 units to your cart.
- If your team is still shopping, let them shop -- you're just going to check out early and wait by the register. First one to the register just so happens to have the money...
- You pile the items onto the conveyer belt and wait in anticipation as the cashier starts to ring your items up...
- FINDING THE TOTAL: This is why you keep a list of WHAT you have and HOW MUCH of it you have. Match up what you have to its price, and multiply it by how many you have. Everything is priced per unit:
Produce - 3.49 Candy - .99 A Case of Soda Pop (Contains 12 cans) - 5.99 Health & Beauty Supples - 6.99 Alcohol - 13.99 Pasta - .49 Premium Quality Promotional Pet Food - 4.99 per can Giant Cheese Wheel - 99.99 A Happy Hotdog Man - 10.99 Meat - 4.49 Crab Legs - 14.99 Cigarettes - 9.89
Multiply the units you have to the price. If you have five units of crab legs, you're now shelling out 14.99*5=74.95 for fancy eating.
Once you have your total, subtract it from the budget of $300.
- Remember, you're SHARING this budget with your team!
- If you go over the budget, you can either pay with your island allowance OR attempt to run. If you run:
Roll 1d10
1 - 5: You're caught and escorted off the premises. You're banned from doing this EM for two IRL weeks.
6 - 10: You manage to run off with the last THREE items on your shopping list. In addition, they have a picture of you on camera so you're banned from doing this EM for two IRL weeks.
Maru's Suggestion for this EM:
Keep a running tally of what you have in your post. No need to keep track of prices, but keep track of your cart and what's IN your cart. That way at the end, you'll know exactly what you have and what you can add to your RP inventory (if you're that kind of person).
I'd personally arrange my post like this:

Evan read the mission parameters and then read them again, and read them again until he was sure that he was looking at it right and there were really five people assigned to pick up groceries. Why did it ever take any more than two? Looking closer at the team he was going to be working with, it seemed like he was the only intermediate, too. That meant he was going to have to wrangle four trainees around a grocery store with a very, very limited budget. He was pretty sure this was part of his punishment. Well, hopefully they assigned him some trainees who knew how to behave in public.
Noemi smiled at Evan after he was done reading the mission report and cocked her head at him shyly, waving a bit.
"Hi M...Hi Evan!" She corrected herself, twiddling her fingers together. She was dressed very much in layers (Like the avi idec it's cute) as the last time she had gone grocery shopping, TEENAGERS like herself decided to use her as a milk targeting practice.
"Is it just you and me?" That would be okay! She didn't mind Evan, he was a nice man.

Alistaire arrived looking as though this were the very last place he wanted to be.
(Spoiler: It was.)
"And what, pray tell, are we doing going to a grocery store of all places?"
This was the FIRST TIME the petite Asian left the island, when she received the information sheet, she yelled in happiness at the Main HQ buildings which she noticed shortly when several hunters looked at her. She blushed in excitement while she ran back to her room, repeating it time after time to her weapon until he returned to scold her and reminded her that wasn't a shopping trip, but a ******** MISSION. She looked at the date again, "Just two days Z, what should I wear?"
On the day for the mission, Shu magically woke up earlier than the gathering time, brushed her hair, dressed up and double checked to make sure she brought everything she needed: a small bag of candies, the hunter pendant, her phone and something girl stuff.
Grocery shopping, world outside the island, here she comes!
When she arrived at the gather spot with her bunny knit beanie and a rather casual outfit, there were already three people waiting. "Good morning!" The petite Asian greeted cheerfully and then when she spotted a familiar girl, she glomped on. "MIMI! Mimi! We are doing a mission together? That's great!" She paused to look back at the two hunters with one hand raised up, "Greeting, I am Shu, Death trainee come from Asia, nice to meet you all~"
Shu smiled while looking at the hunters, trying to match them with faces in her memory until one of them matched a face she saw on twitter. "You are Mr -Roberts?" She remembered that because she knew a hunter named Robert. "Would you mind if I just call you Evan? Because there's another Robert on the island..." She hope she wasn't too rude for the request.
To another hunter, she nodded and gave a smile, she was quite sure she didn't see him on twitter or face-to-face before. "Mister, how can I call you? If you don't mind me asking."

Oliver was a bundle of nerves as he approached the small group. This was his first mission ever, and even inglorious as it was, the fear of failure had created a huge knot of anxiety in his stomach. This was the first time he was being entrusted to, well, not be useless.
There were already a couple strangers gathered, but Oliver happily recognized Noemi. He began to feel better almost immediately, her presence seemed to bring out the best in him even when he didn't realize it himself. He smiled, at least until he noticed the other member of the group.
All the colour drained from his face. Good feelings were gone.
He joined the group as far away from Alistaire as possible, looking like a rabbit ready to bolt. Even the meek and friendly 'hello' he had been about to give Noemi died in his throat.

Evan was happy to discover that Noemi was going to the store with them. She was nice and even-tempered and she actually cooked, so he trusted her judgment in picking out perishables. She would be an asset on this mission, for sure. "Noemi," he replied, greeting her with a friendly smile. "Unfortunately not. We're waiting on some others."
And oh joy, it seemed like one of the people they were waiting on was Al. "Fear infestation in the produce. It's turning people into vegetables," he responded, completely deadpan and happy to let Al think that was their mission--for all of a minute, because he didn't want Noemi to think he was serious and panic. "We're going grocery shopping, what do you think?"
The other members of their team arrived shortly after, for which Evan was grateful; he was eager to get going. He nodded a welcome at the two new faces, not missing the way the unknown guy seemed to wilt as he caught sight of Alistaire. Hmm. He would have to keep an eye on them. "Nice to meet you, Shu," he said to the girl who had pounced on Noemi. "Please, just call me Evan."
He was suddenly glad that they were going grocery shopping and not doing anything actually dangerous--most of the members of this group definitely qualified as "too young to be here," barring himself and Alistaire. "Okay," he said, "now that we're all here, our mission objectives are as follows: buy groceries, pay for groceries, come back with groceries. That's it. We've got a really limited budget and a lot of mouths to feed, so use your best judgment when picking things out. If you have to ask yourself if it's really needed, then chances are it probably isn't. Any questions?"

Evan would receive what was best deemed as a withering stare.
"Pardon me for not being stupid or naive enough to believe any of that nonsense," he said flatly. "By all means, keep telling yourself that you are witty and clever it makes you feel better. I, however, am neither amused by your attempts at ridiculing me nor impressed by them, so why don't we just do us both ourselves a favor and act like mature adults on this mission, considering neither of us really care about the other being here?"
His gaze flickered towards the other three, Alistaire's brows raising. "Considering that it appears they've started recruiting children now. Good afternoon, Mr. Keeley," he added, his lips quirking upwards in a faint smirk at Oliver's presence. The other two he was unfamiliar with, Alistaire merely giving the pair of them a brief and disinterested nod. To the dark haired one he said, "My name is Alistaire Rahal-Nazari," mostly because he would rather not have Evan tell her something ridiculous like his name was Al.
He tugged on his gloves irritably. "Let's just get this over with, shall we?"
Ohhhhh It wasn't just her! It was...many others! Luckily it was Noemi's two closest friends and some unknown man. Noemi patted Shu's hands, giving the other girl a hug and then a small nervous smile to Oliver, waving her hand a bit at the life hunter. "H...Hi Oliver. And Shu."
SHE ALMOST THOUGHT EVAN WAS SERIOUS. Almost, because he added on later that it was in fact just grocery shopping and Noemi did want to redeem herself after the disaster that was hers and Cee's shopping.
Since Shu AND Oliver were there, it wasn't hard for Noemi to relax. Even more so that Evan was along. At Alistaire, Noemi wilted only a bit, but automatically corrected herself so that she could at least talk normally to the other hunter.
"Goo...Good afternoon Mister Alistaire." Noemi nodded, then turned to her two friends. "Are you guys exc...excited?!!?" She reached out to take both of their hands, "We can get good food! Maybe some extras for snacks to make! What kind of things are you gonna get Oliver?"

As gullible as Noemi, Shu had her eyes grew bigger as Evan said about the infestation but she was glad to find out it was only a harmless joke. Another boy arrived like a scared puppy, a shy boy maybe? "Oliver? You are the friend that Mimi mentioned? Nice to meet you, I am Shu, friend of Mimi~" Still clinging to her best friend, Shu waved and smiled friendly to the hunter.
"Ok, nice to meet you, Mr. Alistaire." Even the hunter seemed cool, Shu still gave him a warm smile and a wave. Shu squished Noemi's hand lightly, "YES i am soooooo excited! I love foods and they're important for a good day." She paused before giving her friend a playful wink. "That sounds like a good plan~" They were going to grocery shopping, but surely they were given more money than enough, the girl's eyes sparkled with conspiracies.
She turned to Evan and raised a hand as if she was in a classroom, "I have a question, Mr- er- I mean Evan, which one are we going? Walmart?" As an Asian never been to foreign countries, she only know one foreign supermarket name.
Evan needed to practice his sarcasm with a less gullible group, even Oliver looked a little more frightened at the mention of human vegetables. He had seen movies like that, and it never turned out well. Never.
But the relief at realizing they were just on a grocery run after all was enough to keep him from jumping a foot in the air when Alistaire actually spoke to him. He was not sure how to respond to the smile. Usually it was accompanied by a thorough beating, delivered in a way that was impossible to refuse. He shuffled another foot away from the other trainee.
"H-hi," he said quietly to Noemi, trying not to look too unsure of himself as she took his hand. "Ah... I-I am not sure what we need, but... um... Kraft Dinner is good?" It was a Canadian staple that even ten-year-olds couldn't object to, so it was naturally something Oliver ate willingly.
He leaned around her timidly when he heard his name, and blushed. "I-I suppose I am...I think," he offered, to have even been mentioned as a friend was a new and wonderful thing. "N-nice t-to meet you, Shu."

Al's glare was met with a toothy grin. "But you're stupid and naive enough to ask why we're going to a grocery store," Evan retorted, then looked at the startled faces of the other trainees--all of whom seemed to have believed him. Maybe Al had a point after all. How disappointing.
He took note of the names of the trainees he hadn't met before; it looked like Noemi would be the leader of that little group, based entirely on the fact that she seemed to be taking them literally by the hands. That would work well, as long as there wasn't really a Fear infestation in the grocery store. Whatever--if there was, they could throw Al at it and be on their way. "We're going to some random grocery store," he told Shu, his smile for her much kinder than it had been towards Alistaire. "It's not a Wal-mart, so it's probably better quality stuff." Hopefully, anyway. "If there are no other questions, let's head out."
OHHHHHHHH It seemed like Alistaire and Evan didn't get along so well! Noemi watched the back and forth with her usual timidness, squeezing her two best friends hands tightly.
She wasn't sure she could handle...~conflict~...
Instead of saying anything though, "L..Last time. Miss Cee and I just went to a random place." She said to the two, "Be careful for teenagers" She looked down now, "I got milk thrown on me...a lot." A LOT. Following after Evan, with a apologetic look to Alistaire, Noemi dragged Oliver and Shu in.
Unfortunately it was not Wal-Mart they were being dropped off in but it was a decently sized grocery store in a large city. Probably to help them blend in.
"So...So we just go here, and grab a cart..." Noemi nodded, "And we get stuff and go!"

Right. Time to go. Oliver had no say in the matter, as he found himself pulled through the portal whether he liked it or not.
"Um... D-do you know where we are this time?" He asked, remembering the last time he had been off the island. It had been a shock in a couple regards, one, it was the first time he had been in such a big city, and two, they had actually sold alcohol in the grocery store. He had probably looked like quite the tourist.
This time he tried not to look around so obviously. There were so many people... He snuck a glance at the others, trying to see if any of them were as disoriented by the large buildings and noisy streets as he was.
Since Shu was on the other side, she leaned her head a bit outward to wave even happier at Oliver's reply. Then, her attention was shifted towards the tall hunters's back and forth, smiling interestingly. They must have some funny history. Shu spent a minute to turn back to her dearest friend and gently patted her hand with her idle one, telling Noemi to relax.
Being too innocent, just like Alistaire said, Shu concluded that Evan was a nice person when he offered her the friendly smile and explained patiently. "Oh..." A sound of disappointment but her eyes lightened up again following his words.
With Evan on the front, the three hand-in-hand walking like good buddies. It reminded her of the good old days she spent with her sisters thus she swung their hands gently like a cradle unconsciously. The petite Asian tilted her head to listen to Noemi's sharing and interrupted with soft low voice when she paused between. "Oh my those naughty teenagers, I hope they don't this time, my clothes are cheap but I like them..." She had a worried face as she was willingly pulled into the portal.
They probably got out in an quiet alley, who will set the portal in the middle of a crowd of people anyway. When Shu walked out of it with the rest, she was giddily charmed. So noisy, so crowded and so busy. Although she grew up in a city, it never can compare to any like this. The first thing she noticed was the degraded air quality and the car beeping and people chatters. Everything was so different from the Island. "Wow....." The only word she said while looking around like a little kid first visiting a zoo. It wasn't exaggerated that they are called sky crappers, no matter how the Asian girl tilted her head, she couldn't see their tops. She was captivated by what she saw, if not Noemi was dragging her, she might just stand there and later they had to go back for the lost girl.
Shu smiled at the pedestrians as they looked at her and didn't worry if she acted strange, she was excited and in a delight. They walked along streets after streets, but the girl wasn't bored at all, there were too many new things to see.
