Gloomwood. A forlorn looking, unkempt wood surrounds a narrow, overgrown path to a deeper and darker section of the woods. You find yourself in a small encampment, with an extensive staff of questgivers and several vendors who sell rookie equipment, with nowhere to go but forward.

Teleport Nexus present in this location

Vendors:

Weaponsmith: Sells rookie weapons for 100 Glint apiece
Tailor: Sells light rookie armor for 100 Glint apiece
Leatherworker: Sells medium rookie armor for 100 Glint apiece
Armorsmith: Sells heavy rookie armor and rookie shields for 100 Glint apiece
Beastmaster: Sells bait for 10 Glint apiece, buys rabbits for 150 Glint apiece
Carpenter: Sells rookie carpenter equipment for 100 Glint apiece, and nails for 10 Glint a set
Woodworker: Sells rookie bows for 100 Glint apiece
Chemist: Sells rookie health potions for 200 Glint a piece, each restoring 2 HP a round for three rounds. You may only drink one potion in six rounds. Using a potion is a roll1 action, or you can throw it to someone else using your roll1, then they themselves can use a roll1 to drink it. There is no chance of missing
Sells rookie vials for 10 glint apiece.
Sells rookie ampoules for 20 glint apiece.
Lightsmith: Sells rookie health crystals for 300 Glint a piece, each restoring 4 HP instantly. Using a crystal is a roll1 action, and you can use one on someone else by saying their name or touching them with it.
Stonemason: Sells mortar for 10 Glint a unit
Trophy Hunter: Sells Preserving Oil for 100 Glint a unit
Lightcaster: Sells

  • uncharged lucent stones: 100 glint apiece
  • simple talisman: a talisman with 2 slots; 500 glint

to reach the dungeon, two encounters must be completed without returning to town. The amount of monsters will be randomly generated each encounter

first: boars. 1d4, 1-3 equals number of boars, 4 equals super boar
second: bears. 1d10, 1-5 = 1 bear, 6-9 = 2 bears, 10 = super bear

when rolling a loot roll, a roll between 1 and 5 by the person who killed it will cause the monster to reappear, with twice as much health and half as much detriment to its stats. It will defend 1-20, attack 21-90 and rage91-100. During a rage post, the monster will attack with +20 attack, instead of any detriment.

When mining the stones (requires a pickaxe) near the Gloomweave Cave, roll 1d100+mining
1-50= 1 unit stone
51-75= 1 unit charcoal, 1 unit stone
76-80= 1 unit iron ore, 1 unit charcoal, 1 unit stone

125-150= 2 units quartz, 3 units iron ore, 3 units charcoal, 4 units stone

Monsters:

While out in the woods, just exploring, roll 1d100.
1-25= encounter a rabbit. 10 HP, roll3 unmodified, roll4 always equals run away. Will only be in combat range for one post, then will be outside combat range for one post, then will disappear.
26-50= Deer. 10 HP, roll3 +10, roll4 always equals run away. Will only be in combat range for one post, then will be outside combat range for one post, then will disappear.
51-75= Gloomweave Spider
76-90= Boar
91-100= Bear

Gloomweave spiders: A large spider, roughly three feet tall and six feet across. A successful attack from this monster will cause poison for three rounds, worth one point of damage a round. They are found near a cave, which is filled with them. Venturing into the cave will start an encounter with at least three spiders. (player gets to choose how many, but it must be at least three, plus one for every additional party member beyond one.) Once those spiders are defeated, notify a moderator for your special reward, before leaving the cave.
HP: 20
-40 to all combat rolls.
Immune to effects.
will always attack (will attack party members at random. 1-100 can be split into as many parts as needed to ensure everyone has an equal chance of getting attacked)

Boar: A large, wild boar, with razor-sharp tusks and a temper to match
HP: 50
-35 to all combat rolls
1-25 will turn to flee. Requires one round to prepare to flee, during which it will not attack, and a second roll in a row will confirm it leaving combat and escaping.
26-50: defend
51-100: attack (will attack party members at random. 51-100 can be split into as many parts as needed to ensure everyone has an equal chance of getting attacked)

Bear: A large black bear, its fur fallen off in tufts, rabid from some disease it seems.
100 HP
-20 to all combat rolls
1-90: attack (will attack party members at random. 1-90 can be split into as many parts as needed to ensure everyone has an equal chance of getting attacked)
91-100: rage for one round, reducing the penalty to all rolls to -10, and reducing damage taken by half.

Loot tables:
when you beat an enemy, it will drop loot. Every surviving combatant will simply roll a 1d100 at the end of combat to determine what was dropped.

Rabbit: roll 1d100
Deer: roll 1d100

Spiders:
1-50: 1d50 Glint (meaning you just take the number you rolled as Glint.)
51-75: 1d25 Glint + 1 rookie health potion
76-100 1d50 Glint + 1 rookie health potion

Boar:
1-50: 1d100 Glint (times two the roll, or re-roll the 1d100 and keep the latter result)
51-80: 1d100 Glint + 1 rookie health potion

Alyxandeyr took a deep breath of the humid, forest air. It may look like a horror movie, but it still smelled like a forest, albeit a moldy one. He exhaled slowly and rolled his head on his shoulders to crack his neck. Beginning to walk forward, the man rolled his shoulders back and raised his shield slowly, facing a spider of colossal size. It was his first day playing the game after his training, and he'd picked up the hunt quest for the Gloomweave spiders to start getting a leg up. Even this early in the beta, there were people peeling away from the pack, trying to rush forward and make themselves immortal. Alyx had other plans to achieve that same goal.

The spider lunged forward, practically a feint, but Alyx' shield still caught the fangs and repelled the motion. He smiled coolly. This was as good as it got. The comforting feel of the thump against his shield reminded him how far this game had come. The man shoved back against the spider, but didn't clear too much distance between them. He tested his shield's weight on his arm and readied it to block again, watching over the top of it to keep an eye on the spider's fangs. He tried to count the seconds between the attacks, but it came too quickly for him to get an accurate reading. He didn't know if it was even possible, but if he could learn to read enemy movements as a science, his abilities would only benefit from the knowledge.

The spider rushed forward with a powerful attack and drove Alyxandeyr a few inches backwards, He dug in his heels and pressed against his shield to remain upright, drawing his sword and shoving against his shield to throw the spider back, he sought to exploit the opening in the field left by this maneuver. He threw all defense to the wind, and sought to end this in one swing. You weren't supposed to ignore your footwork. You weren't supposed to leave yourself open to risk an attack. It was reckless, but he didn't care. He was having fun. He felt invincible. What was the worst thing that could happen? It's the first monster in the game, it can't possibly be that much of a risk, can it?

Alyx felt his blade strike true, but he watched in terror as the huge, dripping fangs of the spider buried themselves in his sword arm. He watched the spider's healthbar deplete to zero, and watched as his own slid steadily down to the halfway mark and then some. As the spider despawned, he helplessly watched the affliction drain his health to near a single quarter of his bar. He was shaking. He hadn't expected the terror that came along with almost dying. After all, it was just a game, right? He sat, panting, against a tree as his status returned to normal and his health began climbing steadily. He almost completely forgot about looting the mob, and a message appeared in his HUD, letting him know what he'd gained from the battle.

He'd gotten cocky. He couldn't believe he'd come so close to dying on his first day in the beta, no, worse; his first fight on his first day in the beta. He shook his head and tried to clear his thoughts. He'd have much more caution in the future. He couldn't possibly survive if he was that reckless again. Any thoughts of DPSing were put out of his head like they were never there to begin with, and he resigned to his life as a tank. There was simply nothing else to it. If he was going to have to solo (as he was very likely to do, considering the low number of players in the beta) then he'd have to be a lot more focused on survivability than damage output. And focus he would. Stepping forward, he entered the aggro range of the next spider.

Without missing a beat, the spider leaped at Alyx. It was with luck that the man threw his shield into the path of collision, and it was less calculated defense maneuver than reflexive, self-preservative twitch. however it happened, Alyx managed to get his shield up, and the entire spider had crashed full-force into it. Were it not for the tree that his back ran into, Alyx would have fallen over backward. The spider jumped off of the shield and landed a few feet away. This would be so much easier with someone sneaking up on this thing. Come to think of it, Alyx hadn't seen many players at all. he wondered where they all were. It wasn't like the dungeon had been cleared yet. What if... No. That's impossible. Not everyone could be dead.

Another attack, hastily and barely blocked, brought Alyxandeyr back to to the real world. Well... To the real, virtual world. The virtual real world? Yes. Yeah, that's the one- OH GOD! The giant spider rammed into the shield again, burying its fangs into the metal as if it were trying to bite through the object standing in the way of its food. Shuddering softly, Alyx stared into the huge, black eyes of the monster just inches from his face. There were a lot of things you can prepare for, but seeing something so terrifying on a primal level so close and so large is an experience you just can't get used to. He shook off the shivers and threw the spider back, raising his sword to ready an attack.

The spider lunged forward, and as it did, Alyx stepped to his right, turning with his shield to keep it between him and his enemy. A sudden thrust of Alyx' blade and the spider was sliced wide open along the side, a glowing red line slicing its way through all the way along the monster; the game's way of showing damage dealt. Alyx watched anxiously as its healthbar decreased rapidly to about three-quarters empty, stopping short of killing the mob. Alyx sighed. This was going to take a little longer than just one attack. His proficiency surprised him, though. The system wasn't guiding his actions too much, what with him not having any skill points, but he was still able to hold his own, and that was something he'd not expected to come easily. In his previous Dives, he'd always used a two-handed sword, so using just one and being able to survive was not necessarily something he'd been counting on.

The spider turned sharply and leaped back at Alyx' left side. Acting on instinct, the man batted it away with his sword, spiking it into the ground and depleting its healthbar to zero. Taking a deep breath, Alyx touched the prompt that appeared to tell him what he'd won from the fight. He didn't even read the text, he just touched the button and sat down quietly, his breath shaking as the adrenaline left his system. This game was going to shave years off his life. He couldn't imagine what it was going to be like at the later floors; things were already this bad on the very first monster. He supposed that the other quests might have been easier, but normally for hunt quests, they assign fewer as the difficulty increases. Maybe he was wrong, though. Maybe they had wanted to make the quests easier for newbies. Maybe bears were the simpler target. They at least didn't have venom.

Leaving the spiders behind, Alyx set off back to the main encampment in the middle of the forest. He decided that instead of jumping to the opposite end of the spectrum, maybe taking a look at the middle ground could reveal the designer's intentions. Once he arrived at the camp, Alyx listened to the plight of a hunter who frequented the area, concerned about the ferocity of the local boar making it impossible for him to hunt for his family's food. Alyx listened politely and touched the button, adding the quest to hunt boar into his journal.

Setting off into the forest, following his quest prompt to travel toward the boars, Alyx readied his sword and shield. If the NPC had been right, then Alyx had to be ready to be ambushed from any direction by a monster.

And suddenly it was on him. A slight ruffling of grass, a sudden, instinctive twist to put his shield out, and then a boar half as tall as a man stumbled past Alyx, hardly attacking so much as running forward. For a moment, Alyx wasn't sure who had surprised whom. But as it turned to him and its eyes flashed with intent, Alyx was suddenly sure that it had simply rolled extremely poorly. He felt himself relax a bit. Sure, it was a bit meatier, but it was a lot less monstrous, and if this altercation was anything to go by, it wasn't going to be doing much damage. He must have made the right choice in picking boar; the designers had given the players a break to get them started right away.

The boar turned and charged again, but it was painfully slow. Alyx stepped lazily to his left, more listing than darting, and struck a swift, piercing blow into the boar's right flank. He was marveling at how lucky he'd been, getting his practice on the spiders before coming here. Compared to those guys, this combat seemed almost relaxing. No giant monsters, instead a familiar face to stick a knife in, and no wicked, cruel speed or toxin that made your insides feel like ice. he could get used to this. But he shouldn't, and he knew that. Game designers are always trying to get their players to grow complacent, especially hardcore game designers. A million easy mobs does not mean that the million-and-first isn't going to be as strong as that entire army you just laid waste to.

Level: 1
HP: 18

Boar HP: 26
-35 to all combat rolls
1-25 will turn to flee. Requires one round to prepare to flee, during which it will not attack, and a second roll in a row will confirm it leaving combat and escaping.
26-50: defend
51-100: attack (will attack party members at random. 51-100 can be split into as many parts as needed to ensure everyone has an equal chance of getting attacked)

This time, The boar grazed Alyx' thigh as it passed by, drawing a thin red line across the metal plate as Alyx took his lumps. It wasn't too bad, though, and the man's health barely even dropped. The boar's health, on the other hand, suffered greatly from the wound ripped open along its left side, a thick red line shining down its body from snout to tail. Alyx smiled a soft sort of smile and his eyes tightened into a determined focus. "Time to end this." He raised his sword high and slashed down with all his might, his old DPS days coming back to him in a rushing red haze.

There was something so satisfying about abandoning your resolve and cutting loose with a vicious attack, marauding your way through hordes of enemies, carving a swathe through the fields of battle to whatever bauble your eye had locked on to this time. In this case, it was power. Alyx was only out here to get stronger. To become superior, so that he might conquer this world. He laughed as his sword plunged deep into the boar and buried itself to the hilt even as the boar tried to run away. With his next movement, Alyx would rip the sword free, but at an angle, opening a whole new hole in the beast. Its HP hadn't even finished dropping yet, and Alyx was already calculating his next move.
