With a new room discovered, it meant a new room to tidy up. Still adorned with his newly borrowed hairpin, the Knight once more returned to his wonder with as many cleaning supplies as he could carry for this trip. Armed with several packages of Swiffer Dry cloths, he proceeded to the Resting Quarters once again.
In hindsight, it did make sense that the personal area for rest was somewhat hidden. It made it more difficult for someone to find oneself when their guard was down.
Once within his Ancestor's Resting Quarters, the young knight set to work. After laying out the packets of Swiffer cloths upon the bed, he set to cleaning off the vanity first. With the advantage of modern cleaning materials, the filthy mirror was soon enough cleared up to admire himself. The table top's dust was banished, and any extra compartments were opened up solely so he could clean them. There were a variety of trinkets within the storage compartments, accents to add to one's uniform if one desired. However, none of the ornaments seemed to call to him like the hairpin had his first time in these quarters.
A Millennium's amount of dirt was a terrible thing to clean up after. It took a full package of the Swiffers for just the Vanity. As carefully as Nysa could, he tucked away the used Swiffer cloths back into the original packaging, as to reduce the amount of cleaning up later.
"I am curious as to why you started with the Vanity, young Knight?"
The lad couldn't help but smile slightly as he tucked the final cloth into the packaging. Glancing up, he saw the familiar shape of his Ancestor looming nearby.
"I believe in priding oneself in their physical appearance, Ancestor. It is only logical that I would target the Vanity first."
The spirit's brown eyes seemed to follow his successor as he began to move to a spot where they could be facing each other. "I am also quite curious as to why you selected to wear a woman's hairpin, Young Knight?"
With a gloved hand, Nysa touched the fluffy edge of the feather now in his hair. "I do have a fondness for Swan feathers. I must say, I was rather surprised you had a woman's hairpin amongst your possessions..."
It was rather odd, seeing as his Ancestor was usually minded his manners. However, he interrupted Nysa's thought by clarifying "That is not the feather of the Swan, Young Knight."
Pressing his lips together briefly, Nysa contemplated the interruption. Yet, it would be impolite to ask now. Instead, a different question would be far more logical. "Pray tell, what sort of feather is it, Ancestor?"
The ghost turned with a flourish of his nearly transparent cape and walked to one of the walls. There was a framed painting which had a layer of dirt so thick that the actual contents of the image was impossible to make out.
Gesturing with the back of his hand, the spirit offered "If you would humor me and clean this for me, I will explain as you work."
With a nod, the lad picked up a new package of the Swiffer cloths, then made his way to the framed art. He set the cleaning materials down, then reached to carefully remove the art from its spot on the wall. It was rather fortunate that it was set low enough on the wall for him to remove without much difficulty. Placing the painting down on the floor, he soon enough began to work.
As promised, as his successor pursued cleaning the painting, he began to explain the feather.
"The feather accenting the hairpin is not of the Swan. However, the bird it comes from is quite similar to the Swans you have upon Earth. The bird is called the Odelian, and it is native to the Wonder of Nysa. The Earth's Swans are smaller than the Odelian, and as I recall, Swans are fresh water dwelling birds. The Odelian is actually an oceanic dwelling bird, though more specifically, the species lingers in coral reefs. The Odelians also have far more elegant plumes upon the head and the tail than Swans."
The section of canvas which Nysa had been working upon soon enough revealed what seemed to be a Fleur de Lis upon a stretch of white. Though the Knight couldn't see it, his Ancestor smiled upon seeing the symbol.
"Odelians were large enough for a small person to ride, though none would ever dare to defile these birds in such a manner. They might have been large, but they were gentle creatures, only preying upon the parasites that would occasionally plague the Gardens of Nysa. It was said that they were shy, typically bending to the will of the other animals in the environment so that peace could be maintained. Typically, they are quiet birds. However, when they are near death, they will sing out... beautifully. They were the gentlest of my allies..."
"...Allies? Due to the fact they assisted in maintaining your gardens by removing the parasites. As in the beneficial coexistence?"
The Ancestor remained silent for a moment, as if contemplating the question. "I will leave that for you to figure out, Young Knight..."
When Nysa looked up from the painting he was cleaning, his Ancestor had vanished, clearly done with today's conversation. With a sigh, the lad continued to clean until the image of the Odelian was quite clear. Once more with a gloved finger, he brushed the edge of the feather in his hair as he gazed upon the foreign bird.
"...the Odelian, hmmm?" It truly was like looking at a fancy swan who was resting within the Gardens of Nysa.
Only once the painting was restored to its former glory did the lad return it to its place. He still had plenty of cleaning to do.
