It had been a while since Gale had last seen a certain teal haired hunter, which meant that he was vaguely suspicious of what had been going on inside of Jack Cross' head. Which was why, early one morning, Gale, who was sitting out on the training field again, decided that he would see what the former was up to.

He pulled out his phone and jotted down a quick text:

[A.V.]
Text to Jake:

You busy? Feel up to a spar?
PostPosted: Sun Jun 29, 2014 8:00 pm

It was probably best that Gale didn't know what went on in Jake's head.
It was full of many deep, dark, things. Ok, perhaps not that "deep" or "dark" but Jake rather liked keeping his thoughts to himself. Usually.

As it was, Jake was sitting in his room said early morning, staring forlornly at the mission reports that had inevitably piled up due to his negligence when his phone suddenly vibrated.
Thankful for the distraction, he picked it up, half-expecting it to be Sherry asking to hang out. Instead, it was... someone not quite Sherry.

Regardless, he fired off a text.
ANYTHING was better than mission reports.

[A.V.]
Text to Jake:

Caelius would never buy anyone dinner except himself and his shampoo, so no, I'm not Caelius. But if you're so sure you're going to lose...

Gale showed up at the training field in a pair of dark sweats and a dark green teeshirt with the word sniper emblazoned across it in blocky letters (a gift from Bix his first Christmas on Deus). Jinhai wasn't summoned yet, but Gale sat down cross-legged on the field and absently rubbed at his neck, which still felt sore. The bruises had settled a little, and were somewhat less noticeable, only due to the fact that he was wearing a simple blue scarf around his neck.

He spent the time waiting for Jake lying on his back staring up at the sky.
PostPosted: Mon Jun 30, 2014 9:47 am

Jake suddenly had the image of Caelius having a romantic candlelit dinner with a bottle of shampoo, and quickly abolished the thought from his mind. Though he was pretty sure the death lead couldn't read minds, tr very idea sent shivers down his spine.

Rather than respond to the text, he simply snapped his phone shut and shoved it into his pocket. Gale did have more experience and his chances of winning were rather slim in his opinion, but it wouldn't stop him from trying.

Considering he hadn't changed when he left his room, Jake was still wearing what he'd consider sleepwear, which was a simple white t-shirt and black sweats. At least he had taken the time to put his boots on, along with his belt sash so it could hold Chester's totem.

It was exactly 11 minutes when Jake arrived at the training fields, and rather than alert Gale to his presence, he merely walked up to the not-so-blond death hunter, and looked down at him.
"So, sniper, you ready to get this over with?"

It was a moment before Gale answered, and even then it wasn't really an answer. He just settled for making a face a Jake, childishly sticking out his tongue before he slowly sat up, trying not to smack Jake in the head as he did so. Gale got to his feet, brushed off his hands, and gave Gale a smirk.

"Afraid you'll lose?" he asked innocently, and summoned Jinhai, who made a soft hum of amusement in his head.

"I still think winner should buy dinner; I'm running out of food at the house."

While Gale may have his senior in terms of experience, Jake only chuckled when the death hunter made a face at him. Still a kid.
"Oh please." He summoned Chester.
"I thought you said loser buys dinner. Or do you just like me that much?"
By saying that, he was probably suggesting that he'd lose.
"Well, I suppose you've grown... somewhat."

Whoops. "I meant 'loser buys dinner,'" said Gale, with a wave of his hand. "I misspoke, because your ridiculous ideas distracted me."

But there was a grin on his face anyway, Gale swinging Jinhai around. Truth be told, he actually rather liked Jake; the consistent bad attitude and the snarkiness reminded him of an older Otto at times, but there was a certain respectability about him anyway; and Jake was more than capable enough to handle things, even if he handled them...differently than other people. Unlike many on the island, Jake was capable of listening; and when Gale had yelled at him for the first time, he had gotten mad, but he had listened; and that, at least, made the difference between someone like Rep, who just got angry at the world all the time, and Jake, who got angry, but didn't let the anger rule out the rest of his emotions.

It was for this reason that Gale did not dislike Jake Cross, though there were times that he wanted to smack him upside the head.

"I've grown," said Gale testily as he pulled the rifle around to focus it carefully in Jake's direction. "A good inch, maybe even two, since I've last seen you, Jake Cross."

<< Not that anyone would notice. >> Jinhai remarked cheerfully, and Gale sent back a thought that was both high in volume of colorful words and also not really that appropriate to be said out loud. He cleared his throat, trying to balance again.

There were times when he thought it was too big for him (though he'd never admit it), and while his boosted abilities as a hunter allowed him to wield the weapon without needing an excess of strength, sometimes it became awkward to try and use it in the way that it was supposed to be used. Not only that, but the fact that it was a sniper rifle, and not a smaller handgun or a regular rifle, meant that it was best used at a distance, and that closer combat would be more difficult. It was something that he'd long since learned to live with, and he tended to improvise when it came to close combat (using the rifle like it was a swinging baseball bat was one way, for example, and smacking people in the head of it was another). He knew the weight of the rifle by heart, and could balance it the way it was supposed to and the way he needed it to, but still...

Gale pushed those thoughts out of his head very quickly.

"So," he said, readying the weapon. "What's been happening in your life lately?"

He twisted the gun around, held it by its barrel instead of the way it was supposed to be held, and did just what he usually did when dealing with someone that had a weapon like Jake's - namely swung it towards the other man and hoped it connected with some part of his body; in this case, Gale aimed steadily for one of Jake's legs, hoping to knock him off of his feet.

"You and Sherry still together?"

"W-what ideas..."
Gale couldn't read minds... right?

It seemed strange that they'd come such a long way. It was a vague memory, but he was pretty sure he and Gale weren't that close at first. Or, er, not "close", but on such friendly terms. But now... heck, he almost saw the fellow death hunter like a brother. Kinda. Or some kinda mentor. Which was kinda weird because he was pretty sure he was the older one.

Strange thoughts aside, it was a good thing he couldn't read Gale's mind, or else he would have scoffed at the idea. Though... perhaps he had gotten a bit better than the time he was still a trainee, there was a lot he had to learn, and even now, he didn't feel capable of anything. If anything, he just knew he didn't want to hurt those close to him anymore.

"Well, I suppose you'd have to grow up sometime," he laughed. "You've even gone and dyed your hair too, you rebel."
Not that... he was really one to talk.

"Uh. Not... much."
He winced as the rifle smacked into his shield. He saw you aiming at his leg, Gale, he saw you. At least he wasn't shooting him... yet.
Jake retaliated with a swipe from both his blades.
"Yah." He flustered slightly. "How 'bout you and Stormy? Everything alright?"

Gale just gave Jake a knowing look as though he could actually read Jake's mind.

(Spoiler: he couldn't.)

Still, Jake had improved, at least both temper and personality wise - and apparently physically as well, because his quick, careful strikes to Gale's sides were simultaneous and hasty, but not messy. It wasn't the attack of someone running on emotions too heavily, but on someone thinking carefully about where to next strike.

"Yes, well," said Gale, leaping back and rubbing at his side, wincing a little. "I thought it was time for a change. I got tired of being mistaken for Otto all the time," he added, with a slight smirk. "The color's starting to wear out, though, I should do something else with it." He tugged at a lock of his hair, which was currently pulled back into a small ponytail at the back of his head.

Gale twisted around and swung the rifle towards Jake again, still not actually shooting it just yet.

"Things are good between you, then?" he asked, and then flushed a little at the mention of Stormy, his cheeks tinting a pale red. "We've been together a year now," he said, and the concept still blew his mind. A whole year with Stormy. Had they really progressed at all? Sometimes it felt like they hadn't, especially with recent developments in their relationship, but sometimes it felt like they had gone so far forward that it was hard to remember a time without her.

"We, ah..." he trailed off a little uncertainly. "We're doing okay."

Jake stared back, wondering what was on Gale's mind.

"Otto?"
The name sounded familiar, and he knew he had probably encountered him several times, but Jake was always bad with names... and faces.

Oh... well, they didn't look THAT similar...

"Why don't you dye it brown and grow it out?" he snickered, swinging at Gale. "I'm sure a ponytail would look good on you."
If only he knew...

"Ah, yah..." he rubbed the back of his neck subconsciously. "Time sure flies, doesn't it?"
It had probably been around the same time he and Sherry were together. Of course, it may have been longer if he hadn't been a complete douche.
"That's good to hear."

"Blonde hair, about my height" Not taller because Gale was still in denial about that. "has a chip on his shoulder the size of Outer Mongolia most of the time. You'd know him, he's been here as long as I have and he used to be in Death Division before he transferred to Sun.

<< The traitor. >> Jinhai laughed good-naturedly.

"Brown is boring," said Gale, with a smirk at Jake. The rifle was spun back around, Gale slamming it against Jake's legs as he tried to knock him off balance. "Besides, it's long enough now that I can pull it back already, I just forget about it most of the time. We can't all be as crazy haired as you, though," he added, with a look at Jake's brightly colored hair.

"What else is new with you?"

Your explanation was only making him more confused, Gale.

"A... chip?"
Well, at least Jake vaguely remembered seeing him with a Sun coat, and that he was in death division. And blonde. And Gale's supposed not-twin.

"H-Hey, I have-"
He didn't get to finish his sentence as Gale swept him off his feet. Literally.
Jake let out an "oof" as he hit the ground hard, wincing. Guess that was what he got for not paying attention.
"I have my reasons." he groaned.

"Oh, you mean besides smarting right now?"
He pushed himself up and took a swing at Gale.
"Not... much, besides the whole horsemen thing going completely out of whack. What's happening with them now?"

Gale just looked at Jake.

"Haven't you ever heard that expression?" he asked in exasperation. "Having a chip on your shoulder? Means you have a grudge against the world? Come on, Jake, work with me here!"

It was very satisfying to have knocked Jake to the ground and Gale leaned over him, a smirk on his face. "I'm sure you do," he said, in a consoling sort of way that was probably not very consoling. He grinned, stumbling back as Jake swung at him, Gale wincing a little on impact.

"No idea," he answered with a shrug, attempting to swing at Jake's torso. "I've gotta do a bit more research, get some intel. They're changing up their strategies, we should be more prepared the next time we have to deal with them."
