Melvin hadn't been in his room since leaving the morgue after the first night in his room alone. It wasn't doable. It wasn't workable. It wasn't something he was capable of. The place smelled of her, and he felt his presence there without her presence was unnatural and that it made it more startling when he heard noises in the night and it wasn't Rin moving to go to the bathroom or getting up to go to the greenhouse and finding it was just someone in the hallway or the dorms creaking naturally. Each moment was a reminder of her not being there, and a notice of how long she had been gone.
It reminded him of that time, that moment, and the guilt started to flood his lungs making it harder to breathe.
It wasn't hard to get a cot from supplies, and taking his old covers, he just made a small living space in the greenhouse. It was warm here, quiet, and the work he and Rin did meant nothing broke in. He could sleep here. Work on runic carving here. Read paperwork here. Drink here.
What he needed to do was work on the plants, and he started to look at them more and more, wondering what he was going to do. He barely knew how to water them.
He was reading through, and at least reading kept his mind busy. Off things, and the greenhouse was private enough that he could just sit and read and drink and feel – a little more stable. Sometimes.

It had taken several days before Noah learned that Rin was -- gone. He hadn't seen it. He hadn't seen the body either, and it just seemed surreal that she could be there one day and gone the next. Unbelievable. But she wasn't around, and her name had been removed from all the duty lists, and when he'd asked he'd been told that she'd died on mission. He hadn't even known her that well. But she'd entrusted him with the care of her plants and given him a key to the greenhouse. After his duties were finished for the day, he walked up to the greenhouse, unlocked the door, and stepped inside, heading for the workbench to get a watering can. The plants shouldn't need fertilizer again yet, and he'd check on them as he watered.

There were a pile of assorted plant books on the table that Melvin had been leafing through. Half of them talked about things that were, at his plant-care level, still unable to fully grasp. He understood certain concepts, but he was still very much a beginner gardener dealing with an expert's greenhouse. He was more or less just glancing at them, feeling more and more depressed at his inabilities to keep Rin's greenhouse alive, all the while drinking at…..what time of day was it anyways?
When he heard the door to the greenhouse open, he felt a flutter in his chest, and quickly turned around expecting –
-someone else.
Visibly deflated at seeing Noah, he closed the book he had been reading. "Rin isn't here." He said, wondering if the man was here to talk to her.

Noah stopped short when he realized he wasn't alone, his eyes going wide and his elbows pulling tight against his body, flinching like he'd been caught trespassing. Then he looked down at his key and reminded himself it was okay for him to be here, right, obviously Melvin did too, of course he did, he was Rin's boyfriend. Had been Rin's boyfriend. "I, I know," he answered, muted. "I heard. I'm sorry. I just, I wanted to come check on the plants and take care of them, she'd, she gave me a key so she wanted me to help, she'd have wanted that, right?"

"News travels fast, I guess." So everyone on the island who mattered probably already knew Rin was gone. He guessed that it served him well not having to tell everyone when they already knew, and was one heavy burden he wouldn't have to bear.
Looking at Noah and his key, he looked away. Before, Rin having a helper was a good thing, but now he saw this place as private and wasn't sure if he liked Noah here. However, as he looked to the side were the many plants Rin had devoted every early morning to late afternoon to, he knew he couldn't just watch them dry up an die.
"Yes....she would have wanted that." He said, back to the man as he opened the book again. "Someone who knows something about plants has to take care of them....and I'm just a beginner." He admitted, turning a page. He eyed the whiskey bottle beside him, but didn't motion for the glass just yet.
"This place isn't yours now...I hope you understand that."

Noah fidgeted, turning the keyring over in his hand. "I, uh, I asked someone because I hadn't seen her, and they said." An awkward pause, because he didn't want to say it either. "I just thought I should come and water the plants, if nobody was. And check on the humidity meter and everything and turn the compost pile." He stopped himself. Melvin looked sad and tired, and he had an open bottle of alcohol, and he probably didn't want to hear all this nerd stuff. "I can, I can show you how to take care of things, when you have time," he offered nervously. Melvin clearly wasn't too happy to see him here. "I didn't think it was mine," he clarified hastily. "I'm just, like, her helper," and maybe he should be using past tense but he still wanted to help, "I didn't even think about whose it would be, I guess it would be yours now because, um," and he ground to a halt again, not sure how to say because you were her boyfriend without rubbing salt in the wound, because Melvin obviously already felt shitty and Noah was probably reminding him just by being here that his girlfriend was dead. "I can go," he said in a small voice. "I didn't know you were going to be here, I'm sorry I interrupted."

Noah did not have to worry about poring salt into an open wound. Every moment where he stopped and considered texting Rin about lunch, wen he came here and didn't see her poring over some plant or book with equal focus, or when he came to his room and saw no one else there were daily reminders that stung more and more instead of giving him the comfort of going numb. He felt raw all over, and each word was sandpaper and razors inside of him, prodding and stabbing with sharp, twisting jabs at the most tenderest emotions.
No one needed to dance around him when every moment was a moment without.
As Noah fidgeted and rambled on about thing Melvin hadn't known or considered to do, he felt even more exhausted at how in equipped he really was at taking in the huge project that was Rin's garden. He had spent time listening to her talk about her plans, but he only had the smallest grasp of what it all entailed.
"It's still her garden." He corrected. It was still her garden because she would return. One day. Sometime in the future. Hopefully soon.
Rising from his seat, he turned to Noah - even if he was a bit unsteady. "Shoe me what you do each day. I need to do that too."
He paused. "And try to explain things...simply. If you could." He ran a hand through his tussled hair, not proud to admit his lacking knowledge.

"Okay," Noah agreed willingly. He hadn't known Rin well, but he thought she would've liked her garden to be her memorial. He'd always thought living things were better memorials than stones, anyway. He nodded and ducked his head, and picked up one of the watering cans. "Some of these need to be watered daily. Others you can let the soil get drier before you have to water. I wasn't going to do fertilizer today, we did that not so long ago, but when you water you can go through and check the plants to make sure they're healthy. Here, these ones, see how the dirt's getting dry on top? You get the spout under the leaves, you don't want to pour water over leaves because leftover droplets can focus sunlight and burn the plant, and pour gently, not too fast because you don't want to wash the dirt off the roots." He demonstrated as he talked, shooting nervous sidewise glances at Melvin. After a moment, he asked, "Is it okay if I keep coming up here? I, I don't want to disturb you." He'd spotted the cot, and he wasn't totally sure how he felt bout that, but if Melvin was going to live here for a while Noah should really be considerate about the space.

He wasn't steady, and as he walked, he moved carefully behind Noah, glad that the greenhouse provided plenty of walking room between them. As Noah went to demonstrate how to water a plant, Melvin just grew more and more depressed. He hadn't known how to even water a plant properly, instead just thinking he had to focus on how to identify plant diseases and also how to continue work on the water system Rin was halfway completed with. How was he supposed to take care of a garden when he didn't even know that watering leaves would burn them.
He set a hand on his face, dragging it over and then through his hair as he looked at the watered plant. "Okay." He said, and moving closer to see, he faltered in his balance and set a hand on Noah's shoulder to keep steady before looking at the plants.
Fertilizer. Compost. Watering. Water system. He didn't have to worry about planting more – but keeping those that Rin planted alive. He just had to maintain what was here and keep it as it was the moment Rin left it. To preserve it.
He had to still time for her.
At Noah's question, Melvin looked over at him. "She gave you a key. That means you are allowed in here. It's her garden after all. She makes the rules." He said, and looked back down at the watered plant before releasing Noah's shoulder and looking around.
"I also need you to tell me what I need to be doing when you aren't around. Rin takes care of this place every day, and she had years to know about everything she planted and worked on. I don't. I can't even pretend I'm an expert. I just need to keep this place alive and working for her."
But he did notice that Noah had glanced at the far wall where the cot was placed. "I'm only here….for a little while. I just…wanted some time alone." He admitted, looking over to the cot and the desk. "To watch over things….move things…" To change things not out of choice, but because he was forced to change them.
He looked over at Noah. "You don't need to tell anyone. I just need to spend some time here to clear my head." Though the faint smell of whiskey would say otherwise.

Noah jumped at the hand on his shoulder, shooting Melvin a wide-eyed look and faltering for a moment, but when Melvin let go he kept going down the row, watering each plant carefully. "O-okay," he said meekly. "Mostly, mostly it's maintenance, you water when the soil gets dry, some plants like it drier than others but that's easy to remember, or I can write it down so you don't have to memorize, and the hydroponics and the grow lamps need their power checked daily to be sure they stay running, and the humidity and temperature should be checked too to be sure conditions in here are in the right ranges, all that's just like once a day, it's not too hard. Um. The compost pile needs turning weekly but that's my project so you don't have to worry about it, I'll do that, and I can check the pipes too, since that's a weekly thing and if I do it when I do the compost that'll help me remember." He wound down, glanced again at the cot. "I won't tell anyone," he said, subdued. "It's ... none of their business or anything." His elbows tucked in close to his body. It was really none of his business anyway, and he was sure nobody minded if Melvin was drinking, Noah was sure he'd be responsible with it, and it wasn't like Melvin would be driving or anything. It was fine and nobody needed to know about the cot or anything else.

"Write it down. Write what you know. About the plants. About their schedule. About the pipes. Even the compost." He looked at the plants, touching one lightly with his gloved fingertips.
"Just in case you don't show up one day." He informed him, and looked over at Noah. "I can keep your projects going until you show up again, too. So if you can, and if it isn't hard on you, I would like to have that information written so I don't mess it up. I want to keep this garden going."
He also looked up at the watering system that was overhead that was only half complete. "Do you know who might be able to finish that? Can we contract a Mist or someone who might know how to fix it completely? I think it would be a nice way to make it easier on us." And a nice present for Rin.

"I will. Um. Should I get you a -- some books to read about the basic stuff?" Not reading list, because some people got offended about being given what sounded like homework, especially if they were older or higher-ranked than you. In retrospect, that was probably the reason for three days of scrubbing test tubes, even if he'd meant well. He nodded quickly. "It's a good idea to have it written down. Yeah. I'll get it all written up so if I can't help you can do it all. I want to keep it going too. It's a really good garden." He followed Melvin's gaze up to the watering system. "Um. People talk about Moons building things? Do you know any Moons, like personally, we'd probably have to pay a lot more if they're not friends? I can draw out a layout of what she was doing with it so it'll be easier to get done."

"I was thinking of maybe picking up a few when I get off on leave. All the books she left are a bit too advanced for me. Maybe I can see about watering systems if whatever help I get doesn't understand your notes." He ran his hand through his hair and then looked down at the plants.
"I just have to hope they all make it in time." Until Rin came back. "If I can somehow get this place self-sufficient enough where even I can't screw it up, then I think I can breathe a little easier." As of right now, he worried they would all die on his watch.
He looked to Noah again. "Whatever you can give to help, I'd appreciate it. I'll even pay you if you want." He never expected anything for free here.

"I can give you a list of some good basic books," Noah offered cautiously. Melvin seemed both reasonable and interested, so maybe he wouldn't take offense. He was admitting he didn't know much and seemed willing to research. Noah respected that. "I'll help. I want this to succeed too," he nodded. At the offer of payment, he blinked and shook his head. "No, I don't, no, it's fine, I don't need to be paid, I like doing this, I already said I would." It hadn't even occurred to him that he might be paid for the work he was offering to do here; it was a favor for a friend and an independent project. He was still getting used to the thought that he could get paid for the lab work he did in his duty hours. It was like an internship with work experience, except that it came with an actual paycheck.

"Then if you need anything, even if it's just help with a project of yours, tell me. I would still like to repay you somehow for this. I insist." And he wouldn't hear Noah deny the offer any more.
As he rose, he looked at the plants still around.
"I think......it might be a while before she comes back. It might be a while...with waiting." It had already been weeks. "So.." He looked back to Noah. "I want to keep this greenhouse alive and thriving for her. As much as I can. I don't know what I'd do if it started to go to s**t because of me."
It would be another way he failed Rin.
