It was a surprise to have stumbled upon the basket in the glade, tucked so far into the mountain ranges. It was troubling enough that the mare with her motherly instincts kicking into high gear decided she would stay nearby to ensure it wasn't abandoned in any way.

It was worrying when the days started to tick by and nobody returned to claim the pretty basket.

It was, in fact, downright distressing.

Aleera couldn't fathom leaving her baskets behind, let alone this one when it had nobody to be there. Especially when there were no alarming, predatory sounds coming from inside. The mare had wondered, worried, and finally decided to stay. The world could wait. This little one was clearly alone and her heart just wouldn't stand for her to leave it behind.

It was some time after Aleera's sixth day that the basket started to quiver. Wicker snapped, crackled, and popped as a small, pale hoof poked through. There were grunts, squeaks, and a little nicker of distressed determination before the top of the basket was moved off and the filly within was free to greet the world.

Pale pink eyes regarded the early morning sky with a sort of dazed awe. Overhead, between the shapes above, she could see faint glinting lights...and when he gaze returned to more reachable wonders, she saw the mare and let out a curious breath.

"Nnh?"

Words. Aleera had spoken to her quite a bit, but it was another thing to get her own words out. So she settled for looking at the gold-cream coloured mare in clear question.

Aleera's ears perked at the crackling and familiar sounds of a basket being broken out of. The mare lifted her head and stretched her wings with a breath of relief before pricking her ears forward to wait and watch until the basket's lid toppled to the ground. She smiled, watching the little one enter into the wide world with awe and fascination.

She padded forward, hooves gently whispering on the grass.

Her purple eyes were bright but soft and kind.

She laughed gently at the sound before plodding forward. She spoke slowly, speaking every word clearly for the filly to emulate.

"Welcome to the world, little one... Your name is...Ilanis."

Gently nosing the small girl to encourage her to get up and stretch her legs, Aleera's heart was warm and felt like it could burst. This little girl might not have been hers, but she was all-too-happy to adopt her.

"I am Aleera, your mother."

What was that? The filly's eyes widened at the sound, wondering what it was called as her ears flopped and then flicked forward. She listened intently and then swallowed as she was nudged to her hooves.

She wobbled - she had been laying in the confines of the basket for some time! - and then awkwardly lifted one hoof high, only to misjudge the distance and step on the rim of the basket, jumping at the crackle of wicker and winding up in a heap.

"...m-mother..?"

That kind of hurt! She sniffed, her little tail twitching as she looked up from her sprawled position...and made to try to get up again.

"Yes, Ilanis." The mare smiled and lowered her head so she could brace and help the filly rise, her wing extended protectively overhead. She chuckled softly and let the girl stand on her own but ran her tongue over the pale forelock, after.

"Welcome to the world. Are you ready to explore and learn..~?"

The filly gave a soft squeak and giggle as Aleera stabilized her. Her ears flipped, flopped, and twitched around as she turned her pale eyes up to look at the feathers stretched out overhead. They were attached to her mother. She was so fascinated she nearly unbalanced herself...but turned to look at her own back, finding disappointment in the fact that she didn't have any of those pretty things that moved on her back, either.

"Hnn... Uh~?" She blinked and focused on Aleera as her mother spoke, then smiled. "What is esplore and learn?"

The golden mare blinked before laughing, softly. Oh, this little one was going to be a treat. And perhaps even exasperating at times.

"Exploring means to walk, run, swim, or fly from place to place to see new things, places, and beings. And to learn means to ask questions, just like you did, to come to understand what something means or how it works."

She stretched her wing and dipped the tips down so that Ilanis could see them a bit better.

"I noticed you looking at my wings and then noticed you did not have any after looking at your back. That is part of learning. These wings help me to fly."

Ilanis opened her lips to blurt more questions, but her mother already continued, explaining some of the other things she was going to ask about. She blinked several times, fluttering her eyes quickly and opening them wide as she stretched her nose up to breathe and sniff at Aleera's wings.

"Hmm. Hm." She snorted. "...walk...sw-swim..? What is fly? Run?"

Aleera chuckled at first before a peal of laughter sounded. She continued laughing for a few more moments, looking at the curious little filly as she stretched her wing down a bit further to brush against her pale lavender back. She bent her head and nuzzled the little one's forelock with amusement and care, and the first stirrings of a deeper emotion: love.

Here, this little one held all the wonder of the world, just waiting for it to be explained to her for now. It would be a lifelong trait, as her adoptive mother would ensure she carried her questioning nature to adulthood, and she would try to ensure Ilanis also had wisdom enough to realize that not every reply was truthful.

But she would try to give her those truths, all the same, and build the innate trust the filly had for her, too.

She made a few steps around her, explaining as she did so: "This is walking. Running is to go faster. Swimming...is a bit more difficult. Some soquili have an easier time because they have fins. And to fly means that my feet will not touch the ground when I use my wings to go into the air."

The gentle chuckle had ears flicking forward, and the laughter set the filly's little eyes to sparkling. That sounded nice. Happy. Joyous. Comforting. The wingtips brushing against her back had her jerking, surprised, pale eyes rolling back in trepidation before she saw it was the wing that was attached to her mother.

She breathed a sigh and then relaxed, finding herself comforted by the gesture and content. As Aleera moved around her, her pale lavender eyes followed, wide. Intense. She watched every move her mother made, how her knees and hocks bent, how her feet settled flat against the...ground - it had to be the ground, because that's what she said, right? - as she walked around her.

"Fins? What are fins? Will you show me to fly, Momma?"

Her little fuzzy tail flickered, excitement colouring her voice along with an eagerness to learn.

Well, goodness. Wasn't her little girl progressing. A few less questions, more desire to see things happen. Aleera wriggled her lips against Ilanis' ear, just to hear her giggle.

"Why don't I show you later, sweetie? We should wander around and relax a bit, first, and I do not want to leave you unprotected for right now."

She lead them off, tail swishing, and discussed fins and other such things with her little girl until the questions were less and less, mostly because other things distracted her and she could only take so much in at once.

"...okaaay..." Ilanis mumbled after giggling at her mother's lips against her ear.

That was no fun.

But, taking some steps after her mother, she quickly perked up again as Aleera explained fins. Fins were traits that kelpi and mer and seathi and nixie had! Cool!

"...what...what are all those things?"

She blinked and flicked her tail as she leaned against Aleera's side, keeping up well. She listened. Breeds?

"What are breeds?" And again. And again. "What are other breeds, Mom? What do they do? What do they look like?"

Oh boy. So much to learn! And she had more questions, and hoped she wouldn't forget any of them. With a sound that told Aleera she was trying to process...she asked perhaps one of the most important question.

"What do you mean, pure? Cross?"
PostPosted: Sun Sep 07, 2014 4:06 pm

This was starting to lead into territory that was... Well, it was an uncomfortable subject, one she had been brought up to believe in a certain way. She had never conformed, but the mark was left all the same. She had simply raised her children to be mindful of themselves, to respect themselves and respect others. She had never actually had a little one that questioned everything.

So she took a breath and began explaining.

"Breeds, like the names I gave you for some, are a set of defining characteristics that enable us to tell if others are what some refer to as pure or crossbreeds. My defining breed is Wind, but my father is not a Wind, but an Angeni, with two sets of feathered wings instead of one. A Wind or Angeni will have completely feathered wings. My mother is a Wind, as were her parents, and their parents. You look to be a 'regular' Soquili, which is the most common sort, but you are special and unique, just like everyone else."

And then the question that she dreaded. The mare slowed to a stop and settled to lay upon the sweet grass to better look at her adoptive daughter.

"Pure breed means...to have untainted lineage. So like I said, my mother is a pure bred Wind. My mate, your father, has Kalona and Regular blood running through his veins. It has always bothered him...but he has come to accept it. And I love him for who he is, not what." And that was perhaps the biggest revelation she had ever had in her life. She had went out, done what she termed as her duty by her father (and to a lesser extent, her mother) and birthed some beautiful children.

And then, determined to seek out her own happily ever after, had deliberately gone to seek out a mate that was not a pure Wind. Ideally, not even a Wind. Upon meeting the injured - and extremely cranky - Persephonix, she hadn't thought he would be the answer. But as it happened, as she slowly found she had feelings for him, it wasn't about the fact he had no Wind blood running through his veins. It was about him.

And it was the most humbling experience she had had, aside from birthing children of her own.

"Some do not like those with crossed bloodlines, sweetie. Some think it makes them somehow...less than themselves, which is a flawed view. It truly comes down to the individuals, themselves, not their breed, that defines who they are."

She smiled and lifted her head to nuzzle her nose gently against Ilanis' cheek before blowing softly into her little ruff of mane. It would quickly grow out even more than the short strands were. And she would change, grow, develop...into a beautiful mare, no matter if she lacked physical traits that made the others feel special. Sometimes, they were also the ones that were arrogant and prideful. But she would let Ilanis grow and do her best to direct her to become fair and compassionate. That was all she could ask, in the end.
