There were many things on the island Oliver had learned to accept with a defeated expression and a long-suffering sigh. The public showers, for one. He still hated the public showers. The lack of simple foods, like KD. No internet. Having to run coffee. And having to fight. It was for good reason there were always hunters on the training fields. Although he had never been called to an off-island mission himself, he had heard the rumours of fights between FEAR creatures and "horsemen", and seen the results firsthand in his infirmary duties. At some point the heavy axe of his would mean the difference between life and death. So he had given up, and accepted that looking stupid on the training field was something he had to go through. One more awful thing to add to the list, no biggie. Today he had finished his chores early, and had decided to work on that stupidly huge swing his weapon required. It was constantly challenging his sense of balance, if he was too timid, the weight of the axe head would pull it down too far, but if he was too forceful he would get pulled right over. He needed to get the hang of it, learning where the axe would go, so he could use the momentum to his advantage instead of being dragged around by it.

It seemed that lately Finn could most often be found on the training fields. There was something about practicing with his weapon, especially now that it had changed slightly, it's weight not quite the same as it once was, with fewer areas along it's length to hold on to, that was almost therapeutic. No matter what his mood, it always seemed to help clear his head, peaceful and relaxing, giving him a chance to just think. But, as usual, after a while all of that quiet got a bit boring, and there really wasn't much point in going to the training fields unless one meant to test out what they'd learned on somebody else, just to make sure they were doing it right. So, he took a small breather, jabbing his weapon into the ground butt-end first, to have a glance around at potential sparring partners. It wasn't generally very difficult to rope anybody in, but today it seemed that the training grounds were looking a bit bare. Oh, but there was somebody arriving, and Finn smirked to himself before lifting a hand up to wave the younger man over. "Hey, Princess! Get your a** over here~" There was even a cheerful note to his tone when he said it.

Oliver knew exactly who was calling him, even before looking over. Finn rarely used his name, but part of it was the teen's own fault, since he kept responding to it. Today was no exception. Glancing over, he refused to shout out in reply. Instead he ignored the telltale warning in his gut and joined the older hunter. There were too many conflicting thoughts, part of him was immensely happy to see Finn smiling. Another part of him thought that in itself was suspicious. It was the training fields... But Finn hadn't ever really hurt him. Well. Not intentionally or cruelly. So Oliver returned a nervous smile. "Hi Finn," he greeted, once he was within talking range. Some curiosity slipped into his voice, despite his belief that fewer questions led to fewer uncomfortable situations. "A-are you going to practice?" Now that he thought about it, Oliver had never seen his friend's weapon. What was an intermediate's fighting skills like? He could probably learn a lot from watching one of Finn's sparring matches.

Finn stood and waited for the younger man to approach, his smile widening when he stopped in front of him though not an ounce of it registered in his always cold gaze. At Oliver's question, Finn nodded in response, and wrenched his lance free from the ground, twirling it in front of himself lazily. "Yep. With you. Draw your weapon princess, I don't have all ******** day." Still smiling, still sounding downright cheerful despite the look in his eyes. It was completely eerie.

Oliver's expression turned to shock and dismay. "Ah, b-but I c-can't... Um, w-wouldn't you rather, um, someone m-more skilled?" He took a step backwards, but summoned his weapon anyway. That look in his friend's eye promised the worst consequences if he didn't try to defend himself. "I-I don't think this i-is a good idea, Finn," he protested weakly, his eyes following the path of the twirling lance like a shooting victim would fixate on a gun.

It seemed that Oliver was more likely to run away then to actually summon his weapon, a thought that irritated Finn more then he let show. He wanted to spar. He was trying to sound friendly about it, and was even smiling, and instead of complying, Oliver was backing away. Finn didn't follow, except for with his eye, which stayed locked on the younger man, waiting to see if he would either run or stand his ground. It seemed that the former would most definitely be the case, and Finn was not about to go and chase him down. But then the other mans weapon was drawn. It was drawn, and they were on the training field, and that meant that Finn could engage in combat without fear of consequences. His smile widening, he took a small step forward. "I think it's a fantastic idea!" And then he swung his lance. HP: 50 Damage: 7 Charge: 1/3

Oliver squeaked, and threw up his weapon in a frantic attempt to hide from the blow. It was merely deflected, striking his lower ribs instead of his chest. Thank goodness for shields. "Ow, Finn!" He yelped. This was not how he wanted to learn how higher ranks fought! He swung the axe in a long, horizontal arc, but it did not connect. It only left him wide open for the next attack. As an afterthought he remembered dodging was a thing, but after the last blow he wasn't sure it would do him any good. HP: 33 Damage: 0 Charge: 0/3

"Aw come on now, buttercup! It's just a friendly spar." Finn smirked at the younger man even as he took a shuffling step back to avoid being struck by Oliver's weapon, the air in front of Finn becoming disturbed enough that a small breeze of air fluttered his hair. "Thanks, princess. I was getting a little hot out here." the moon intermediate grinned, his grip tightening on his lance, the temptation to strike while Oliver was off balance from his own swing quite strong. But then, suddenly, Finn's grip loosened, and instead, the threw his arms wide. "Tell you what. Free shot." HP: 50 Damage: 0 Charge: 1/3

Finn shouldn't have been quite so nonchalant, even though Oliver was a small kid, often struggling to handle the momentum of such a large weapon, he had been 'ambushed' on the training field often enough to learn a couple things about the skeletal axe. Without slowing the weapon's movement, Oliver shifted his grasp on the handle, and used the existing momentum to turn it upwards and over his head. One step forward brought him within reach... And the axe came down fast, whistling as the air rushed past the spine-like protrusions. He exhaled quickly and pulled the weapon sideways again before it could strike the ground and come to a stop. Oliver knew his stamina was very limited, it was easier to let inertia do the work for him, all he had to do was control it's direction. Coming out of his previous swing, it was already winding up for the next. HP: 33 Damage: 7 Charge: 1/3

Finn had only a moment to admire the fact that Oliver did not fall flat on his a**, following the axe in it's downward swing, before that wicked blade was sent slicing his way, with nothing at all held up to block it from hitting him full force. The strike was enough to send him stumbling back several paces, surprised, though it did not seem to register on his perpetually smiling yet coldly non-expressional face. Straightening back up, he hefted his lance up in two hands again. "See? Now that's more like it, princess." He took a step forward, eying the way that axe was already swinging up and around for another strike. And in one of Finn Connors most favored of moves, the moon intermediate quickly took what little opportunity he had to jab at the life trainees midsection, sliding the lance through his hands like a giant pool cue, aiming to hit him with it's barbed and spiked butt end. Oliver wasn't expecting that move at all. But he certainly felt it, the spiked blade just barely missing a clean impalement. It sliced into his side, somehow missing any of the important parts. He gritted his teeth, but for the boy the pain itself was not as disturbing as the fear of pain. All those stammered words, the avoidance and nervous skittering around, it somehow seemed less important, less mind-encompassing, when the pain actually hit. Perhaps it was the steady and constant motion of the weapon that helped keep the life trainee calm, it was hard to flinch back when the weapon was striking out. The swing came out as a horizontal slash as Oliver stepped towards Finn, his footwork having actually improved somewhat over the weeks he had fumbled around in fights. One short, twisting step backwards, and his body was once again gearing up for a swing. HP: 29 Damage: 5 Charge: 2/3

The kid had some power to him, that much was becoming surprisingly apparent, as the force of yet another swing went barreling into Finn, though he managed to twist to the side so that the brunt of the blow didn't hit him straight in the stomach as the other had. Finn was still more inclined to believe, however, that the majority of that power came from the momentum of the weapon, and not from the trainee's skinny little arms. But it was....satisfying in a way, to see Oliver like this. To not be crying or even so much as acting like he might break out in tears at any moment. This was actually a side of him that Finn hadn't seen yet. And he liked it, because it would make kicking his a** all the more enjoyable, and less like giving a spanking to a toddler. With a grunt, Finn turned his weapon around in his hands so the more deadly end was pointed Oliver's way, before swinging it up ward, his knee coming up in a half jump with the motion. If it were possible, Oliver would have backpedaled, and fast. The cut from the end of the spear stung, but not as much as the attack from the business side of Finn's weapon. While the first had not put a dent in the flow of Oliver's attack, the second strike did. The skeletal axe crashed down, a little too far away to do any serious damage. Oliver was starting to feel it in his arms, the strain from keeping the weapon off the ground, and the tension in his neck and shoulders began to grow in the periphery of his attention. The kid panted, pulling his weapon back from where the blade had buried itself in the dirt. "Finn, y-your smile is kind of scary today..." HP: 23 Damage: 1 Charge: 3/3

This time, when the ax blade swung down, Finn jumped to the side, but ended up clipped on the ankle which, actually, hurt like a b***h even if it didn't damage his shield too terribly. Taking a few steps back to put some distance between them, while drawing his lance up higher, Finn watched the other man as he began to lift his weapon up out of the dirt. "Really?" He frowned a little, though the smile remained. "Is it somehow different then how I normally smile?" Finn doubted it. He'd practiced this smile for years. Then, he ran forward, jumped, and brought his lance down in a heavy arc. HP: 37 Damage: 9 Charge: 3/3

"N-no, but it feels different when you're attacking- Ah!" Oliver hadn't expected the downward slash, not when the approach had been so direct, he couldn't even raise his axe in time to block the lance's sharp blade. He was able to jerk his head back, but the blade cut dangerously into his neck and chest. Before Finn could get too far away, Oliver brought the weapon up, levelled at chest height. It clicked, like the sound of flint striking steel, or mechanical gears, and then a beam of ice cold energy shot towards the intermediate. Oliver's aim could have been better, the beam nicked a training dummy a few feet behind Finn and completely demolished another farther down the field. The force of the blast recoiled hard enough to knock the Life trainee backwards a couple steps, for a second it looked like he was going to topple right over before he could regain his balance.
