It had only taken one hunt for the three of them to come to an unspoken understanding of their roles and places in the fight. Granted, their mara-fighting strategy wasn't all that different from their dragon-hunting one, but they hadn't been on a dragon hunt since Eanah had grown too large and unwieldy to properly run away. They were out of practice, which was why, this time, everything went wrong.
Eanah found herself on her knees in the sand, grunting at the discomfort the act had brought with it. The mara they had challenged—this one gleaming with a silvery sheen—loomed over her and the unconscious Leyn, and just as it reared back to strike, Thren collided with its face, sending the creature reeling. Electricity sparked from the khehora's skin to the metal monster, slowing it down just long enough for Eanah to raise her scepter and blast the mara into oblivion.
She didn't watch it fall. She huddled over Leyn instead, momentarily cursing the unborn infant that prevented her from easily bending and listening for his vitals. When she finally managed to, she sat back with a sigh of relief soon after. He was breathing. Unless she'd missed him receiving a more serious blow to the head, he would be fine. She sighed, sitting still as she caught her breath. When Leyn began to cough, she slapped him hard on the shoulder.
"Don't do that!"
"Do what?" he muttered, scrubbing his hand from brow to chin, his face turned away from her.
"I can take care of myself. If you ever leap in front of me with the intention of... shielding me from some giant, imbecilic hunk of metal again, I will..." She trailed off as his hand groped the open air for a moment before finding and settling on the curve of her stomach.
"That's not only your decision to make anymore."
Eanah opened her mouth to retort, but found she couldn't. They were both silent for a lengthy stretch until she closed it again, sighing faintly through her nose. "All right. You have a point, I suppose. Just don't jump in front of me unless it's absolutely necessary. Leyn?" She shook her head and smirked when she realized he had fallen asleep.
