The training fields were becoming a second home to Alistaire - if one used the word "home" to mean "place where he spent most of his time," since Alistaire did not, in fact, see Deus Ex Machina as his home, but instead merely a place of residence where he held an occupation.
Even now he was standing in the middle of it, his pristine, classy clothing still not very oriented towards actual fighting; but Alistaire's weapon was summoned, and he was eyeing the practice dummies in front of him with a certain sense of resignation.
There may also have been a slight frown on his face.akina tokuwa HI I'M SORRY THIS IS A TERRIBLE STARTER

The training grounds had become a second home to Hanna since she had come back out of the pod. Some part of her brain reasoned that perhaps she had not tried hard enough the first time around, which had invariably led to her unceremonious deposit back in the freezer. And thus, the Death Hunter had made it her mission to kick her own a** and have her a** kicked at every possible opportunity. Stretching an arm over her head, Hanna was cooling down from a run when she spotted Alistaire, dressed out of place but with determination on his face. She crossed over, coming to stand beside a training dummy. "So I'm not sure if you are going somewhere fancy after this," she said, gesturing to his outfit, "but I might offer more of a challenge than these guys." Hanna flicked the side of the dummy's battered head. "Well, ideally. I assume I would." Quick hands plucked her totem from her ears. As it swelled in size to a hooked twin blade, Hanna looked the center in place, gripping it just below each curve. She vaguely recalled this face -- Sahara? Miss Deus? Something like that, it was hard to say. It occurred to her she was being a little intrusive so she added, "But totally fine if you just want to drill on the dummy."

It seemed he might have heard her at first; Alistaire's gaze remained steadily on the test dummy, and he seemed particularly - and oddly - focused on such a mundane thing. In reality, his thoughts were miles away, on another subject entirely, but after a moment he dragged himself out of his inner musings and turned to look at the young woman who'd spoken to him.
She was vaguely familiar. He wondered where he'd seen her before, and he arched a brow at her, a small smile playing at the corners of his lips.
"Yes, I suppose having an actual moving target would provide more of a realistic challenge," Alistaire replied lightly, leaning back and winding the chains again around his gloved hands. "Though no, I am not going anywhere 'fancy' after this."
He left the I always dress this way unspoken, Alistaire taking a step back as he examined the woman's weapon with interest. He hadn't seen such a weapon before, and it was a rather curious thing, all gold and bladed and sharp.
Yes, Alistaire decided, she was definitely more capable than a crash test dummy. Alistaire inclined his head towards her.
"I accept your offer," he said, and then waited a beat, clearly waiting for her name to be offered.

An awkward silence lapsed as Hanna seemed to miss what Alistaire was waiting for. It occurred to her in a rush, and she fumbled for words: "Oh right, sorry -- Hanna. I'm Hanna -- who are you? Your name, I mean." For whatever reason, she gave him a sort of half-hearted salute, tapping her nails along Adelphe's curve. Why was she suddenly so awkward? She had been the one who initiated all this, after all. It felt like she was meeting a blind date for the first time after chatting him up confidently online for days. Sigh. Straightening up, the Death trainee decided that attacking might be the fastest way out of this. So she lifted Adelphe with the plan of making a quick strike, but the large weapon caught on the grass, totally missing its mark and swinging upward with so much velocity that Hanna almost sent her weapon spinning off like a launched discus. Hanna paused and then laughed like it had been some weird joke, not an actual failed strike. "Some sparring slapstick, to lighten the mood," she said, picking Adelphe up more comfortably. "One of my many features that provide more variation than the dummy." Though maybe Alistaire would prefer the silence. HP: 40/40 Damage: 0 Charge: 0/3

Hanna was an unfamiliar name, though Alistaire filed it away for future reference already, tucking it into the proper place inside of his mind. "Do you have a last name?" he asked, giving her a slight smile that did not quite reach his eyes. "I do prefer to call most by their last names; a habit of mine that seems quite impossible to break."
Not that he ever would anyway, since the only people he called by their first names were Ian and occasionally Harland, when he was caught up in the moment. Alistaire gathered the chains of his weapon together and shifted his feet so that he could get a better position, one sliding in front of other to keep his balance.
"Alistaire," he said, in answer to her question. "My name is Alistaire Rahal-Nazari."
She lunged towards him, but either she was distracted, or she just wasn't paying attention, because the weapon dragged across the grass, and she nearly fell over from the force of her swing. Alistaire easily sidestepped it, arching his brows, and gave her a small, amused smile.
"Have you been on the island long, then?" he asked lightly, as he darted forward. One of the daggers aimed for her left side, while Alistaire twisted and aimed the second dagger for her right side.

Hanna moved to dodge the left strike, which only brought her slamming hard into the right dagger with a wince. She moved away, hoping to spot some kind of tactical advantage. He was more experienced than her; she could tell it from how he carried himself. That made her more determined to do relatively well, even if her progress so far was not perfection. “Last names like the military,” Hanna said, testing the weight of her weapon in her hands. “Though I have always seen calling someone by their last name as a subtle touch of dismissiveness.” An eyebrow quirked, but she smiled behind it. “Nowicki,” she finished. “And as for how long I’ve been on the island? I suppose that depends on what you count as on.” Her weapon chased her words a slash left and then a swing up to the right. HP: 34/40 Damage: 3 Charge: 1/3

She was at least fast and did not try to flinch away from him, instead moving quickly on her feet. And she was not unintelligent either, from the look she was giving him and the comment about using last names as being dismissive. A certain sense of entertainment to him, Alistaire's lips curving upwards in a faintly amused smile.
"Perhaps to some it is," he said easily, which wasn't quite an answer. "But I am grateful for your willingness to both spar and provide me with your last name as it is, Miss Nowicki."
Her weapon swung towards him, quickly, and Alistaire only managed to dodge the first part of it, the horizontal slash to the left. The right backslash caught his torso, sending him stumbling sideways, and Alistaire struggled to regain his footing, sliding one foot in front of the other to keep his balance.
"I should clarify that I mean awake," said Alistaire, with an arched brow. "Were you not awake the whole time you were here? Your word usage suggests that you were on the island, yet not quite on the island simultaneously, which suggests that you were either not awake or you were incapacitated somehow."
He swung one dagger towards her legs, trying to knock her off balance.

Alistaire's dagger bit into the skin of her leg, but bounced back out without wound thanks to the ever-present Fear shield. It was a solid strike and knocked her off balance. Hanna nearly went down to one knee, but got Adelphe up in time to brace the stumble. She tried to move through it smoothly, slicing back up at him. It hit, but without much force. The tide of this current spar definitely seemed to flow in Alistaire's direction. Hanna switched her grip on Adelphe and eased the tension out of her hands. Golden eyes watched Alistaire, hoping to evade the next attack, potentially. "I originally woke up ages ago. Back with Bix and Robert and all those... I guess, older group, I don't know. Things were different then, but I ended up back in the pod about 4 months after that." She rolled her wrist, worked out a kink. "And then two and a half years later, I magically rose from the temporary frozen grave once more. That was in April." Sometimes, Hanna thought she should wear a sign on her neck about it. It would save time, at least. "When did you wake up?" It felt right to ask the question back. HP: 29/40 Damage: 3 Charge: 2/3

A strange scenario, Alistaire thought to himself as he listened. She'd been awake long before he had, years even, but then had been put back in the pod. Out of punishment, perhaps? Or maybe some other reason. He was curious, but it seemed rude to inquire further, Alistaire's eyes moving across the blade of the weapon with interest. He stumbled back as she retaliated, but the attack wasn't as strong as it could have been, and he easily righted himself back into position.
"A few months ago myself," he answered her, a vague smile on his face. "I had the fortunate of following my younger brother here, though our timing was quite a bit off. He arrived several months before I did, strangely, and then I was awoken after him, in spite of being the elder brother. Still, it certainly makes for an interesting situation."
He tried for her side, overshot, and barely grazed her, a frown forming on his face. "I do not think I have met either this Bix or this Robert myself."

"Who is your brother?" Hanna asked, sidestepping the grazing strike and delivering her own blow -- which also grazed. It wasn't exactly a compliment to her form, but sometimes it was nice to have a more easygoing spar. So maybe there was a silver lining. HP: 27/40 Damage: 3 Charge: 3/3

She was more nimble than he'd given her credit for; Alistaire reeled the daggers back in and took a step backwards as she swung her weapon towards him. It was merely a grazing blow; the blades cut across the top of his shoulder, but didn't do much else except make him hiss slightly.
"Ian Rahal-Nazari," said Alistaire, after a moment's pause. "He is a Moon Hunter, an Intermediate, though I have heard his transfer into that division is rather recent, seeing as how he used to be in Mist prior to his promotion to Intermediate."

His missed strike was returned by Hanna's own missed strike -- but perhaps hers was worse as the glow of runes flickered and then sighed back to darkness when there was no contact. Adelphe hissed in her mind. Oh well, too late to go back now. She focused on the conversation instead. Alistaire had only heard that his brother transferred, he didn't know? In spite of social etiquette, Hanna asked, "Are you two close?" She could understand not being close -- after all, she was anything but close to her twin siblings. But it must be hard to stay distant from a sibling who is actually on the island. HP: 27/40 Damage: 0 Charge: 0/3 kuroopu I have had the WORST luck with dice using her Fear attack lately.

The fact that Ian had been promoted to Intermediate before he had left a sour taste in Alistaire's mouth, but he was determined not to show that sort of face to someone he hardly knew. Hanna's next attempt at attacking missed him, though only by a few inches, and Alistaire gathered the chains up again, winding them around his hands.
A slightly amused laugh escaped his lips. "No," he said flatly, and flipped both of his daggers into his palms, wrapping his fingers around the hilts of the blades. "We are not close. But we are family, so I suppose that counts for something here on this island."
He slashed outwards towards her, two quick strikes using first the left blade and then the right, though the latter of the two was merely a glancing blow. Alistaire straightened a little and brushed a few stray strands of hair from his face.
"Do you have any relatives on the island, Miss Nowicki?"

The words that Alistaire shared resonated with Hanna, but she flashed away from those thoughts in order to focus on avoiding his chains as best she could. It was moderately successful — a strike of pain, but nothing debilitating. She bounced on both feet, faking left a few times, moving in a circle, seeking her best option. She swiped her weapon out, but missed... again. Family was complicated for Hanna, too, but she could not even fathom the idea of her twin sisters suddenly appearing at Deus. The thought made her sick. And the fact that it made her sick, made her sad. Shouldn’t she want her family here? She thought of Peyton, how happy she was when Astrid stepped out of a pod. Maybe if the twins joined the Hunters, Hanna would finally have something in common with them — it would be as if a new leaf had been peeled off. Look, we really aren’t so different? But the Death trainee could not even picture it. The thought was ridiculous. “No,” she said, barely suppressing the bile. “I mean… no. I have two sisters — twins, actually — but I could never imagine them here. I tried to convince them that there was more to life than cellphones and celebrity gossip.” She waved one hand in the air. “Even if they were capable of seeing the things that lurk all around them, I don’t think they could ever be unselfish enough to pay attention to it.” A shrug rolled off her shoulders. “I’m better off without them. Which I guess is ******** up, I don’t know.” Hanna did not prod Alistaire for more details on his own situation. Instead, she let her eyes linger briefly, inviting a comment but not directly requesting it. She understood privacy, and the great need for it especially in a place like Deus — even if all privacy was imagined. HP: 22/40 DMG: 0 CHG: 0/3 kuropuu Oh god, did I do the damage right? Hanna only loses 5? ALSO, sorry for taking so long!
