The training fields were all but deserted, which left Alistaire with a feeling of satisfaction. It meant he was free to fight without having to worry about the prying eyes of those around him, which had become more of an irritability as of late, especially with everything that had happened.

Alistaire much preferred the solitude of the field in contrast to the busy cafeteria, or the crowded dormitory hallways; and considering that he spent the majority of his time shadowing those in the Life Division or with Harland, he had had little time lately to practice sparring.

Dressed in his usual pristine attire, he stood off to the side of one field in particular, a look of concentration on his face as he wound the coiled chains of his weapon absently around his gloved hands.

/ Stronger. /

Patience, Alistaire thought with annoyance, but Grimshaw was not really an irritation so much as an instigator; and he appreciated the feral nature of the weapon that was driven by a fierce desire for Alistaire to rise above his own insecurities and doubts and anxieties to achieve his goals.

Too bad that was easier said than done, but at present moment Alistaire was going to focus on training rather than standing around.

Shiloh too was fond of the training fields, earlier incidents not having been enough to frighten him away. They had become a sort of comfort to him, though he didn’t search them our for their silence, he found a certain ease in the way that all he had to focus on was the task at hand, a dummy, a sparring partner, nothing else had to matter but him and Haruko, her chain weighty against his palms. Haruko enjoyed their sessions as well, always anxious to sink her teeth into something.

Between them, the training fields were fun, a place where work masqueraded as play. He’d spent a lot of time training but lately, circumstances that had pushed him there to begin with had pulled him back and he’d gotten away from his routine. So it was with a grin that he’d pulled on his jacket, gathering up Haruko’s charm and headed towards the fields.

It was a grin that, as he set foot onto the grass and noticed its only other occupant, quickly faded.

“Alistaire,” he said, giving the other man a quick nod hello. “I won’t bug you if you don’t bug me.”

He turned his back to him, towards some dummies in the other direction. In his head, Haruko chirped something that sounded an awful lot like ‘We can probably take him.’

“I don’t want to take him anywhere,” Shiloh muttered aloud, not thinking or considering present company.

The very last person Alistaire wanted to see on the Deus Ex Machina training fields was Shiloh Parish, his brother's all-too-protective, overly cheerful, pastel haired boyfriend. In spite of everything that had happened with Ian over the past few months, and their growing (and very, very slow) reconciliation (of a sort), the one thing that Alistaire still could not quite handle was Shiloh, and he couldn't quite determine why that was.

This annoyed him greatly.

The voice that called out to him most definitely belonged to Shiloh Parish, however, and waited a beat before he turned his head, slowly pivoting until he could see the other man in front of him. He arched a brow, then looked back at his own target, keeping his mouth resolutely shut.

At least until Shiloh spoke again. Alistaire turned back to him.

"I beg your pardon?"

“Ah, sorry, I was talking to my weapon,” he said, glancing over his shoulder at Alistaire, running his hand through his hair a bit sheepishly. Even if he wasn’t particularly fond of Alistaire, Shiloh’s natural good-naturedness somehow managed to still slip through, not being one to lie or play down the truth, even if doing so probably would have saved his neck several times over by now. No, Shiloh was one to always speak his mind, openly and honestly, even if it got him into trouble.

That, and he was just a little bit competitive, just a little. It certainly didn’t help that Haruko hadn’t stopped encouraging him since her first outburst, her voice running a mile a minute in his mind.

“She said that we could probably take you, in a spar,” he grinned, with the slightest hint of a threat hiding behind his smile. He turned to face the other hunter.

“Since we’re both here anyway, interested in finding out?”

Shiloh couldn’t help it, like a dog with a bone, once an idea was planted in his head he just had to know. Besides, sparring was always more useful practice than just hitting the dummies and he wagered that hitting Alistaire would probably also be a whole lot more therapeutic.

Alistaire gave Shiloh a stiff nod, giving him a brief once-over. Still the same pale face and pastel colored hair - like cotton candy or Starbursts, perhaps, still the same faint smile that seemed always ingrained into his face, still the same carefree, too-innocent expressions. It was really very annoying, though Alistaire was attempting to just stay out of it this time.

Except he couldn't, not after the offer Shiloh had made. Alistaire slowly pivoted, arching a brow as he tapped one of his knives thoughtfully against the side of his face.

A spar. With Shiloh Parish, his brother's boyfriend. Well, it could have been worse, Alistaire thought, as he dragged his weapon forward, his eyes glinting with amusement and curiosity. He wouldn't have made the decision so easily before, but since Shiloh was the one who had made the invitation, it wasn't really polite to decline, was it?

"Shall we test that theory, then?" he asked, with a tilt of his head.

Shiloh had never been particularly good at keeping his nose out of things, and he probably never particularly would be. He often said things without thinking, this, of course, being one of those times and though he on some level regretted his stupidity, he wasn’t exactly going to back down now. Besides it was just a spar, and like he’d said, they were both here anyway. What could possibly go wrong?

“Sure,” he answered politely, summoning his weapon onto the field. Her chains clinked pleasantly in his gloved hands, and he hoisted her over his shoulder. “My only rule is it’s first one to less than ten percent of their shield. No breaking, its pointless in a practice match anyway.”

There was that and then there was the fact that Shiloh didn’t need another spar gone awry. He didn’t care what Alistaire thought of him, precautions were precautions.

“If you’re cool with that, let me know when you’re ready.”

Shiloh drew back onto the grass, looping Haruko around his arm and facing Alistaire.

Alistaire slanted a sharp-eyed look in Shiloh's direction, but he wasn't about to underestimate him this time. Shiloh may have looked like he belonged in a cotton candy facility, or maybe a My Little Pony shop, but it was quite apparent from past experiences that he was not nearly as casual and easygoing as he let himself be viewed as.

There was intelligence behind those eyes, Alistaire just didn't want to admit it.

He smiled a little, Alistaire pulling his weapon towards him, and he looped the chains around his fingers, already curious as to where this little spar would lead them. Shiloh was a rank above him, but Alistaire had managed to hold his own against those of his own rank, so perhaps fortune would favor him today.

It was all up in the air, really.

"Your move, Mr. Parish."

Shiloh, on the other hand, hadn’t really sized up Alistaire at all. It’s not like it would have mattered, his judge of character being as poor as it was, but he was far more inclined to let their spar prove their mettle. Words were cheap, easy to throw out, easy to cut someone down. Words were fallible, they could be twisted, they could be lies; they could not mean what they said at all.

For the most part, battle was different. Shiloh knew first hand just how dirty a spar could turn, but he felt better prepared for it now and as a necessity for survival, he hadn’t let that one incident tarnish the thrill of a good fight, hadn’t let it keep him away from honing his skills.

This was no different, as he waited for the signal from Alistaire and then, once given, launched forward with Haruko in a straightforward attack, testing the waters.

Alistaire wasn't sure what exactly he was trying to prove; whether his desire to understand and pick apart Shiloh Parish stemmed from his peculiar and terrible relationship with his brother, or whether it was because Shiloh simply broke out of the molds that people had put him in.

It was this, really, that made him curious.

Shiloh's weapon swung towards him, catching him in the side; Alistaire stumbled a little, regained his footing quickly, and spun the chains around. The daggers held tightly in his gloved hands, he lunged towards Shiloh and drove them into his side.

Shiloh had been one of those kids who, while he liked winning as much as anyone else, was never particularly crossed by losing, telling himself that no matter what he’d gained an experience, and that alone was prize enough. Losing was nothing to get upset over; it simply meant he’d have to do better next time. This sort of mentality had come in handy as a child, Shiloh not being especially good at either sports or academics; he learned there was nothing wrong with being average, with being just ‘okay’.

That being said, as pointed edge of the daggers bit harshly into his shield, Shiloh really didn’t want to lose against Alistaire. It wasn’t that he hated Alistaire as a person, but he really couldn’t understand his behavior, nor could he excuse it. He was judging rashly, without knowing all there was to know about the other hunter but perhaps it was because Alistaire’s first words to Shiloh had hit closer to home than he would have liked, and Shiloh would do anything to not have to believe him.

He gritted his teeth, trying to ignore the burning pain in his side but it hampered his attack. Taking a misstep, Haruko’s teeth went long of Alistaire, just barely grazing him.

He wondered if Shiloh would be like the others; the same sort of impulsive nature that stemmed from too many conflicting emotions. Fighting entirely based on feelings and emotions, rather than careful consideration and footwork, was bound to be messy and unhelpful.

One got nowhere if they relied purely on their emotions, at least in Alistaire's point of view.

Shiloh's weapon careened towards him, and Alistaire could feel the teeth grazing against his arm. He pulled himself away and spun around, the chains of his weapon clinking as he raised the daggers, his hands gripping the hilts tightly.

Shiloh was of the impression that feelings were every bit as important to battle as were the calculations, not that he considered it often. Though his sparring had been considerably more light-hearted before the incident, there had never a moment he hadn’t thrown his heart into it, both he and Haruko diving headlong into the offensive. In truth, it didn’t always pay off, sometimes they were uncoordinated, and often times they missed.

But when they did hit, as Haruko’s jaws snaked towards Alistaire, they were a force to be reckoned with.

Shiloh's next attack was more impressive than Alistaire was willing to give him credit for. The weapon shot towards him, slamming into his stomach and sending him careening backwards, his feet skidding in the grass. He gave a wheezing, hacking gasp, and stumbled, nearly falling, but managed to right himself at the last moment. Alistaire straightened, wiping his gloved hand over his mouth and staring out at Shiloh.

// Heheheh...lookit the little one. He's fighting hard FIGHTING HARD! //

Be quiet.

"Interesting," Alistaire said. "Very interesting. You're certainly a surprise, Mr. Parish."

He lunged forward, daggers at the ready, and aimed for Shiloh's sides.

“A surprise?” he grunted, Alistaire’s daggers slipping past any defense he’d tried to put up, slicing cleanly against his sides. It was a sharp feeling, unpleasant and enough to throw off his step, and he pushed away from Alistaire as he tried to regain his footing – and his composure.

Whatever sort of surprise he was to Alistaire, Shiloh couldn’t imagine. The spar wasn’t exactly giving him any brilliant new insights into Alistaire, other than that he could hold his own and was a capable hunter, something Shiloh hadn’t doubted in the first place. Alistaire didn’t seem like the type to slack off or to put anything less than his best efforts into anything, and sparring seemed to be no exception.

Spinning around, he gathered Haruko’s chain, using the weight of her head to gather the necessary momentum before throwing her once again in Alistaire’s direction, her jaws whistling through the air.

He felt Shiloh's hands against him and instantly shivers of anxiety began to rise in his throat, Alistaire gritting his teeth to try and prevent the onslaught of the emotions. He pushed them forcefully away and tried to keep his composure as it was - calm, cool, and collected. It was made marginally difficult by the fact that Shiloh's weapon collided with his side like a bat, slamming into him and sending him staggering sideways, Alistaire collapsing onto his knees on the ground. For a moment he knelt there, winded and gasping, and then he looked up at Shiloh, eyes narrowed slightly.

"You are extremely stubborn," he said finally, one eyebrow raised as he got to his feet. "But I have misjudged your tenacity, it seems. Not to mention your ability to fight."

He dived forward, the chains flashing, Alistaire attempting to nick at Shiloh's legs, knock him off balance.

"I suppose I will have to give you credit where credit is due."
