Al had snuck into the kitchens late at night the day before to perform most of the prep-work in secrecy. When the time had come to toss it all together he waited until just after dinner had been completed and the kitchens left mostly deserted. This was when he made his move. The ovens were even still preheated and ready. The results of his efforts were carefully hidden under a dish and a bow stuck to the top. He wasn't really sure where to find him though these days but that didn't stop him from looking. A spicy aroma was left wafting in his wake as he wandered all over Deus hurriedly. Can't let it get cold.
"Jordan!" he called out.

Al's timing was fortuitous. Jordan had come down to the cafeteria after the usual dinner rush, in the interest of not running into too many people. After the conversation with Robert earlier and finding Harrison's gift, he was feeling distinctly tired; the emotional numbness had been relatively rare today, but that mostly meant that he'd been feeling things sharply and intensely. He'd forgotten his own birthday, in the wake of everything that had happened, and being reminded had been both comforting and deeply painful. As he entered the cafeteria, he heard his name, and sighed very quietly. There went the idea of eating dinner without socializing. But it was Al, and the bow on the top of the object the kid was carrying probably meant that Al wanted to give him a present also, and he could be grateful and friendly for a while. He pulled his smile on and called out, "Over here."

The look on Al's face lit up substantially as he approached. "I got you something," he stood there and held the covered dish out to Jordan expectantly. "It's not much but I think you'll like it. Maybe. I mean. If you like pizza or whatever." He was sparkling again... better just lift the lid and get it over with.

"I'm sure I will," Jordan answered, and lifted the lid curiously.

He was greeted first by the sharp scent of spices before the hand tossed pizza came into view. It was topped with several kinds of cheese and shredded chicken that looked spiced and marinated with some sort of mystery sauce.
"I - uh - they called it Curry Kung Paozza," he nodded with a big eager smile. He hoped very hard that Jordan would like it.

Jordan's eyebrows went up. "That smells great," he said, and pulled out a chair at the closest table, taking a seat and putting the lid aside to get a better look at the pizza. "Damn, I haven't had gourmet pizza in, " he thought about it for a moment, "years, literally a couple of years." The pizza did smell really good, somewhat to his surprise; very little had seemed appetizing for the past couple of days, but Jordan found that he actually felt like eating this. "Thanks, man," he said, and picked up a piece. "Do you want a slice? How far did you have to go to get this?" Finding somewhere to get a specialty pizza like this would either take a portal trip or a lot of favors promised to someone who could really cook, and he hadn't heard of anyone here who could do pizza like this. And if there were someone here who could, he was sure he would have heard of it. Good cooks could make bank in bribes.

Al looked absolutely relieved. It was worth all the sneaking, then. Better yet, Jordan was inviting him to have some. He didn't need offered twice and swooped right in to take the seat directly across from Jordan. He was carefully trying to extricate a slice of his very own from the other side as he thought up an explanation other than a blank stare.
"Just some fancy looking digs I came across," he was getting better at completely stretching the truth out of proportion. Whether or not that was a bad thing...
Et is. Excuse me? Stop lyin' ta peoples who matter t'you. You wouldn't understa- Ah undahstan' perfect. Y'just don' trust 'em... an' that's sad. Y'd think the peoples ya care about woul' be t'firs' peoples ya'd trust, but... But?... Y'head be turn'd aroun', just jackin' trust me on et.
Al heaved a small sigh and looked at Jordan, "that's a lie. I don't know why I told you that."

Jordan angled an eyebrow curiously over the slice of pizza, silently inviting Al to explain.

Al looked around conspiratorially before leaning in, hovering over the pizza, as he squeaked a more accurate answer. "I made it."
Good. Nuru fell silent as he was appeased.

"Really? That's awesome. It's great. I can't cook unless it comes in a box and has microwave instructions, so that impresses me even more." Jordan took another bite. It was good pizza, and he wasn't sure why Al wasn't proudly claiming his work. "You could probably make some money cooking for people, especially with the usual quality of food around here," he pointed out.

Al shook his head looking somewhat mortified, "N-no don't tell anyone. Especially not Rep." He heaved a sigh before continuing quietly, "I'd never live it down." This was his new start and he was constantly screwing up. It was going to be like back then all over again. He smiled, false, but he hoped distracting enough. "Glad you like it though." He finally pried his own piece loose and dove right into it.

Jordan's smile faded. "We're probably not going to be talking any time soon," he said. Why did everything have to come back to this? He could forget for a few minutes at a time, and then something would remind him again. "So you don't have to worry about that." He ate slowly, trying to focus on the food instead of anything else. It would be a shame to waste really good pizza just because he couldn't handle his own goddamn problems, especially after Al had gone to the trouble of making it for him.

"Oh?" The question escaped his lips mere seconds before he had noticed the look on Jordan's face. His eyes widened and he really really really didn't want to talk about whatever it was if it made him look that sad.
"Oh, uh. I mean. But yes, our little secret. Yeah?" He waved his slice at Jordan with his smile growing. "How old are you now anyway?"

"I'm in room 207 now." Jordan met Al's eyes, let the unhappiness show, just for a moment. Then he shuttered it away again. "So if you're looking to talk to me, you can find me there." Al tried not to let anyone know that he was sharp, perhaps didn't realize that he was, but Jordan thought that the kid should be able to connect the dots from there. "I won't tell anyone," he promised gravely, pulling the calm masks back into place. He quirked a small and slightly wicked smile; the expression felt false to him, but he had practiced a long time, and few people would be able to tell. "As long as you cook me something once in a while." It was mostly a joke. "Twenty-four," he answered. "You're, like, twelve, right?" His smile said that he was teasing.

Damn it Jordan. Al didn't want to know! He didn't look happy and was really really not sure what this meant now. Was he going to get asked to not talk to Jordan anymore? Was he going to be asked to pick and choose sides? s**t...
He almost missed the black mail. "Hey!" He wasn't sure if Jordan was serious. "There's no way man, I almost got caught so many times. That kitchen is just way too public." He did, however, completely miss the joking part. "AND I'M NOT TWELVE!"
