Mimsy had broken in their brand new kitchen by making the only thing she knew how to make by heart, a cake. A birthday cake, even. Robert tried to help with the decorations, but the top had come off of the sprinkles can, and the cake now had a giant mound of sprinkles a little off center, with a candle shoved in it.

And he'd carried that cake as carefully as possible, all the way back to Deus dorms, to wish his best friend in the whole wide world a happy birthday.

Texts had been sent back and forth, vague and short, until Robert managed to find out exactly where he was at that moment. It didn't even occur to him that his own room wasn't where he should have been, because birthday and cake and sugar and six pack-

Well. That last one had been his actual, non-sprinkle-mound addition.

He almost knocked on the door with the cake in his hand, but common sense had him putting down the cake, and lighting the candle, before actually knocking on the door.

"HEY OPEN UP IT'S THE POLICE." He bent down, picked up the cake again, and hopped from foot to foot, waiting anxiously to yell.

"The police sound an awful lot like Robert," the reply came as Jordan opened the door, "but either way someone's going to bust in yelling." He offered Robert a wan, tired-looking smile. He'd been sorting laundry, putting things away; there was no glass in the widow, but he'd hung a curtain over it. The room was fairly bare, and it was generally obvious, if someone were to look, that the person in the room was in the process of moving in.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU," He did not stop to wait and look in case Jordan was tired, or busy, or involved. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!" He did not let his eyes stray from the cake, and the man it honored, for as long as he sang. "HAPPY BIIIIIIIIIIIRTHDAAAAAAAAAY DEAAAAAAAR JOOOORRDDDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN~"

He hardly called Jordan by his name, but it was his birthday. This was special.

"HAAAAAAAAAPPY BIIIIIIIRTHDAAAAAAAAAY-" Was he trying to do harmony for himself? "TOOOOOOOOO-OOOO YYYAAAHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!"

The candle flickered dangerously, and he held his breath, before squeaking out a quick - "Make a wish!!"

It was then, and only then, that he just started to notice what was going on in the room - and how wrong that seemed.

Jordan seemed to flinch, very slightly, at make a wish, but he kept the smile on mostly by force of will and said, "Okay, I wish for world peace, or maybe a vacation," and blew out the candle. "Thanks, man. Do you wanna come in?"

"NO!" Robert screamed, almost dropping the cake. But it was too late, he'd spoken his wish and then blown out the candle. The giant of a man in front of him looked as if he was about to cry.

"Boooossss," He whined, already walking inside the moment he was invited in. "You're not supposed to tell anybody your wish, it's supposed to be a secret, or else it won't come true. Now we're never gonna have world peace!" Because yes, this was the reason for that. Yes.

Robert placed the cake down quickly on the nearest flat surface, turned around, and licked the icing off of his fingers. His eyes were wandering all over the room, taking in everything that he knew shouldn't be there anymore. Jordan was moving back into his room, which meant he was probably fighting with his men. He remembered the last time that had happened - and quietly slid the six pack under the table.

"Mimsy made you the cake. She wanted to come, but I told her, I said, guy bonding time is important, Mimsy. You gotta respect that."

He had done no such thing. He just whined until she conceded.

"But the cake is gooood. Come try it!" The elephant in the room would continue to be ignored for a few more minutes.

"Oh. I'll have to catch a shooting star for that one, then," Jordan said, with a grave nod. His eyes flicked to the other offering Robert had brought as it got slipped under the coffee table, and the smile got a little more genuine again; not because of what it was, but because Robert had remembered, thought of him, and brought cake and a present.

"I'll have to thank her later," he nodded. "I've got forks here somewhere, hang on." The room had a small kitchen, clean and modern but very empty, not even a coffee pot in evidence yet. Jordan took a moment to wash the forks and plate that had been sitting in the sink, then brought them back over to the table. "Sorry, I gotta go shopping," he said, and used both forks to pry a piece of cake loose and onto the plate, then handed one of the forks to Robert before taking a bite.

He wasn't hungry, and he hadn't been eating much, but he'd have some cake, because it had been made for him.

Don't ask, don't ask, don't ask, let him have his birthday and don't ask-

"Why you in here, anyway?"

He asked. He couldn't help it, this didn't look like a place to spend the night during a fight. He looked like he was moving in, and that meant permanence. That was troubling.

But not troubling enough to keep him from taking a mighty piece of that cake, and piling it on his plate, and immediately shoving a forkful into his mouth because CAKE.

He'd been expecting the question, he was going to have to talk about this and more than once, but that didn't help much. Jordan poked at the cake with his fork. "I left," he said, and, as steadily as he could, "This is going to be my room. I put in for a transfer last night."

He didn't want to talk about it. He didn't want to explain. People were going to want to know, especially his friends. (He could have friends, he thought with a low edge of unhappy resentment, and then put the thought away, not ready to deal with it or its implications.) It occurred to him that he was going to have to tell America, because otherwise the red-haired woman was likely to keep bugging Rep about the wedding, with the best of intentions. "We've been unhappy for a while," he said, and picked a crumb loose from the cake with one of the tines of the fork. "We ... tried to fix it, but it's just been getting worse." I made mistakes. I made it worse. "I think they'll be okay without me. I'd rather leave and let them patch up what they have than stay and have everything fall apart."

He took several deep breaths, hauling his voice and emotions back under control for now. Then he looked up at Robert. "I still love them," he said. "That's why I left. I want them to be happy." He swallowed down the lump in his throat. "There wasn't a fight, and they didn't kick me out. It wasn't working, and I don't -- the way things are, I didn't see any way it could get better if I stayed." He didn't bother trying to keep his expression controlled; misery and honesty were written on his face. He believed what he was saying, even though it hurt. "Don't think too badly of them," he added quietly. "I guess sometimes, loving someone means accepting that you're -- just not good for them."

He took a bite of cake while he pulled his composure back into place as best he could. World peace, or maybe a vacation. "The island's too small to keep secrets," he said, "but I'm not ready to deal with the gossip just yet. There's probably a betting pool down in the labs. I know how it goes. I'm not asking you not to tell Mimsy," he clarified. "I don't expect you to keep anything from her, and you shouldn't. But please don't talk about it to anyone else yet."

He didn't need to talk about it. Didn't need to explain. Robert had been where he was, not so very long ago. Without a word between them, he felt every reminder of the painful, dwelling ache left behind by the hardest choice. He put down his cake, as his stomach knotted and closed up from nothing more than the mere memory of it.

I still love them, Jordan said. That's why I left. I want them to be happy.

In no way did Robert ever think that Jordan recalled those same, exact words coming from the man in front of him, the day he explained to Jordan why he'd left Petra. There was no room for thoughts of other people's struggles, where Jordan was. But Robert remembered - and heard the echo of his own voice, just as scratchy and ruined, as he gave up.

I still love her, he'd said. That's why I left. She deserves better. She deserves to be happy.

But in the end, he'd been running towards something. Jordan, the better man - always the better man - had made his decision solely because it was the right thing to do. That was why he was the boss. The man Robert always listened to, looked up to. The better man. The best man.

The bumbling giant lunged forward, disregarding the cake and the table and probably the chair that had to deal with his weight now as he slammed into his best friend with a monstrous, violent hug. "I won't tell nobody, boss." Jordan already knew that did not include Mimsy, a fact he would never be more grateful for. "I promise, I promise. Everything's gonna be okay, I promise. You did the right thing, even though it ******** sucks and it's gonna ******** suck for a long time. But you ain't alone, you got me and Mimsy and Maddie and Jerry and everybody else whose lives you make better which is like half the island, and don't you forget it. You ain't never alone, not ever."

Was he crying? Of course he was. He was Robert.

Jordan startled, flinched a little, as Robert swept him into a hug, remained taut as a wire even as Robert reassured him that he wouldn't say anything, tried to comfort him. Robert was crying, and Jordan remembered then that Robert understood, maybe better than anyone else he knew. He'd dug into that sore spot, unthinking, but there wasn't any way around that. Robert understood, and that was a speck of comfort in a sea of grief, and Rep would have been jealous about the hug, but Rep didn't want him any more, either.

Jordan turned his head against Robert's shoulder and let himself take one deep and sobbing breath that shook his whole body and let himself be hugged, because he needed it and he hated to admit it even to himself but he hadn't had to ask.

Robert hugged harder when he felt Jordan sobbed, and patted his back in strong, comforting pats. "That's right, you ********' let it out. You let it out as long and as much as you want, 'cause that's what friends are for. That, and cake, and making you smile when everything else in the world makes you feel like s**t. But smiling comes later okay. Right now, we cry."

He stopped crushing the man, but remained hugging him nonetheless. He couldn't solve all of Jordan's problems, or make the pain go away. Nothing could do that, but time. But he knew what he could do, and this was it. He knew he wasn't going to ever let Jordan have to suffer alone, because he had people who cared about him. That was all he could do, and it would have to be enough.

Jordan stayed where he was for a little while, he would never be quite sure how long, while the tears escaped. If anyone was going to have to witness this, he was mostly okay with it being Robert. Eventually he got it back under control and pulled away, rubbing a hand over his eyes to clear away the remaining wetness there. "Thanks, man," he said, shaky and rough still. "It, yeah, it sucks."

He straightened his back and shoulders and visibly composed himself, drawing the appearance of calm around him like a suit of armor. "The cake's good," he said. "I actually almost forgot it was my birthday. The past couple of years there was some kind of crisis going on, and I missed it."

Jordan gave in and let go for a little while, and that was more than most people could say about themselves. So Robert was happy to let him pull away, and returned to his seat and his cake. This time, however, he just stuck his finger in it. Because cake after heartache should be eaten any damn way you feel like it, and right now, Robert felt like eating with his fingers.

"It's real good. Super good. Mimsy's made like, a thousand cakes. She used to bring me like three, because she couldn't stop making cakes. It's a good thing I had somewhere to pack it all," He chuckled out, patting his stomach.

Then he realized he'd just patted his stomach with his cake finger, and just wiped his hand on his shirt now that it was ruined.

"Yeah, the last time I like, actively celebrated a birthday - well, I don't know. Before Deus, definitely. I think we don't like to be reminded we're getting older, here. HA! Plus I think I was on a mission. I think they make it a point to make you be on missions on your birthday." He sunk his finger into his cake again, and licked it. "******** class="quote">

Jordan winced internally at the casual ruining of a perfectly good shirt. Well, Mimsy probably did laundry, between the two of them, and she probably knew how to get all kinds of stains out of fabric, which was a good skill to have when you had to deal with the kinds of weird stains that tended to get on hunter coats. Not really his business, but it was possible she had better techniques for getting blood out. Maybe he'd ask her sometime.

"Yeah, I wouldn't put it past upper management around here," he agreed with Robert's suggestion, and applied himself to his piece of cake again, determined to at least produce the impression of being okay, even if Robert knew perfectly well that he wasn't. It was less about faking it around Robert, because he trusted Robert not to be an a** about it, and more about himself. If he could act like he was okay most of the time, he could tell himself that he was okay, or that he would be.

(If he'd done that less, whispered a part of his mind that he didn't notice, maybe his guys would have realized how much they meant to him. If. But letting himself break was unacceptable, because in the end nobody else would hold him up, nobody else would protect him, because everyone abandoned him eventually, voluntarily or otherwise, and if he let himself rely on the comfort of others he would have nothing at all left when they were gone.)

If Robert knew what Jordan had been thinking at that moment, he would have socked his best friend right in the jaw.

Instead.

"I brought you a gift. BUT." He waggled a finger carefully. "We're gonna be responsible this time, 'cause oh man what in the hell did we get up to last time." At least this was just a six pack of beer, and not a bottle of vodka. It would be a miracle if they managed more than a happy buzz off three beers apiece.

He pulled the beer out, the same brand Jordan would always bring him when he was down, and dumped it on the table so hard the cake jolted and wiggled. "Tadaaaaa. BIRTHDAY BEER."
