Verity landed ungracefully. WIth her injured wing, she wasn't even graceful in ideal weather conditions. At a time like now when the wind howled and the sky looked ready for a downpour, she felt lucky to have made it to the ground without injury. The blunt end of her torn wing throbbed dully, but this was nothing new. It almost always hurt her now, except when she chewed on the bark of a willow tree.

Looking around, she wondered if there was any shelter to be found. She was in a mostly open area with a few trees and shrubs dotted here and there. It didn't look terribly hopeful. She would have liked to get out of her armor before she became soaked and it began to chafe, but she'd rather keep wearing it if she couldn't find a safe place to store it. Besides, she might need to move swiftly if the storm became too treacherous...

Unlike Verity, Nicolae Draculesti's wings were pristine. His black and white feathers beat against the air as the wind threatened to overturn him. With the wind billowing through his mane and distant lightning flashing across the sky, he felt full of vigor and life. He usually wasn't one for daring acts, but something about today was different. He hadn't meant to be caught out in an approaching storm, but it had happened all the same. Now, he knew that he should descend but simply could not bring himself to. Something about the air called for him to remain. He may have stayed up there until he was struck by lightning himself if he hadn't caught a glint of gold on the ground far below.

What was that?

He turned a circle midair and peered down at the distant green smudge. It looked like some sort of soquili, but he could tell little else from this height. Curiosity overcoming recklessness, he began to spiral downwards. As he did, he realized that the metallic glinting was reflecting off armor. It was some sort of warrior, then? And a mare too... an angeni mare. Now, even more intrigued, he decided to make his landing.

Though the light under those heavy clouds were dim, Verity still noticed when something passed between her and the shrouded sun. Looking up, she saw it was a flying soquili high above. Even from this distance she could make out the four-winged profile. It was an angeni. Instead of being glad for this, her mouth twisted. She had been with her kin quite enough for some time. She would have preferred if it was a wind instead.

Nevertheless, she stayed put as the other angeni came down to earth. If he wanted to speak to her then she would tolerate it, though he would get little more than tolerance from her in her current state.

A particularly strong gust blew at Nicolae as he was setting himself down, but he kept level. Proud of his descent, he let a satisfied smile creep onto his face. This smile slowly drifted away when he saw the look the mare was giving him. She watched him like he had just eaten her last apple.

Brow furrowing, he blinked at her. "Am I bothering you?"

And now he thought to ask her if she wanted company. Verity bit back a sigh. This was a trait that she couldn't rightfully blame on an angeni bloodline. Truly, many stallions seemed deliberately oblivious as to whether their company was truly desired by a mare. "Bothering me or not," she said, "I will not ask you to leave." She lifted her head and looked upwards. Her long mane was immediately picked up by the wind and whipped skyward like a flashing green banner.

"The skies are no safe place for flight right now, even for one such as you." She referred to his four whole wings. In better days she might have said "one such as us," but she knew that she could not classify herself as a healthy member of their kind at the moment.

"Perhaps not," admitted Nicolae. He had visited many herds and spoken to many soquili in his quest to find information about his grandfather, but there was something awkward about this encounter that made him more uncomfortable about the rest. He met so few angeni that he hoped to be able to speak pleasantly with them when he discovered them. This mare looked like a warrior, something that Nicolae himself aspired to. Certainly, they ought to have things to speak about if she only might listen!

"My name is Nicolae Draculesti," he said, an apology in the tone of his voice. Belatedly, he wondered if he should have introduced himself with his last name. Maybe it was his fangs and red eyes that bothered her now, even though his usual cloud of bat followers were asleep.

Verity had not been in the lower world for long enough for the name Draculesti to have any meaning to her. Truly, she found little about the stallion's appearance remarkable. He was dark in color and the fangs were somewhat unusual, but her own fur was marked with rather morbid colors underneath her armor. She had never judged someone based on coat colors in the heavens and didn't do so on Earth either.

"I am Verity," she replied in response to his introduction, though she feared he would interpret that small concession as permission for him to remain longer. A wind she would have happily spoken to. She would have loved to find a unicorn that she could ask for the gift of healing from. She would have even preferred the company of the mischievous usdia breeds to another angeni right now.

Nicolae paused a little. Was that all she was going to say? He felt the strangeness of the situation grow even stranger. He felt like he should apologize for something, but without knowing quite what it was he had done to bother her, he didn't know what it was he should be apologizing for. Instead, he found his eyes straying to her lower left wing. It was tied with a bandage and the injury looked like it was still healing. Concerned, his brow furrowed.

"I'm sorry for asking, but you didn't receive that injury nearby, did you?" He looked around, as if he might see a lurking villain. "This place is not far from where my family lives, and we don't tolerate dangerous interlopers."

She wasn't pleased at being asked about her injury, but she understood why he would wish to know. "There is no danger here," she said after a moment of brooding thought. "This was an injury I received in the jungle. It's possible that the ones that did this to me still follow, but I find that unlikely." Even with half a wing missing, she still expected that she was faster in the air than anything that wasn't an angeni.

She really wasn't pleased about being asked about that. Just thinking back to that time darkened her thoughts. She had known that great evil existed in the world, but she had not realized the depths of it until then. As if sensing her thoughts, the sky let out a rumble of thunder. It was not close, but also not so distant.

The jungle. That made Nicolae frown. This was not the first story that he had heard about misdoings in the jungle. He'd spoken to a kelpi several months ago who had spoken of being chased from his river home in the jungle by a pack of ravening kalonas. Now that he met this mare, Nicolae wished that he had asked more questions of the kelpi. Could it be the same kalona pack that had chased the kelpi that had torn off the wing of this angeni mare as well? He opened his mouth to ask about it when he heard the thunder.

He looked up at the sky, watching the clouds and feeling which way the wind tugged at his mane. "That storm is coming closer," he said. "I'd suggest that we find shelter, but I don't know that there is much of anything to be found here." He looked at the mostly featureless landscape. What few trees there were could provide them with barely more cover than standing in the open would.

Pain and inconvenience made her snappish. Verity wanted to tell this stallion that they were not a "we." She had neither chosen him as a companion nor accepted him as one and didn't intend to start doing so just because of inclement weather. These were all things that she would have liked to say, but she managed to hold her tongue. She knew he had done nothing wrong, or even unkind. Everything that had befallen her was no fault of his.

She willed herself to stay calm and not berate him, instead saying stiffly, "There is no purpose. We will not find shelter in this landscape and even if we did, it would make us more of a target if lightning struck. We are better off not wasting our energy and lasting out the storm here."

Once more, Nicolae looked to the approaching clouds. He really didn't like the look of those, but perhaps she was right. There was nowhere to go, and no soquili had ever died from being rained on. He had very rarely seen lightning strike the ground. Though it wasn't pleasant to think that it might be arcing over their heads, they would probably be safe, if a little damp.

"You're right," he replied after going through these thoughts. "As long as we're not in the air, we should be fine."

Irritably, Verity realized that she would have to ask Nicolae for some assistance. She was used to wearing her armor much of the time, even though it chafed her when she kept it on for too long. However, in a storm like this, it probably would be better not to be wearing metal. She'd heard stories of angeni that flew in storms wearing armor and were struck down by massive bolts of lightning. Something about the metal attracted the electricity. Grudgingly, she engaged Nicolae once more.

"I was wondering if you might assist me," she asked primly. "My armor. I need to take it off before the storm comes." Rumbles and flashes in the distance told her that it might not be very long before it did. They needed to work quickly.

"Of course," replied Nicolae swiftly. He knew little of t he fate of armor in storms. He instead imagined that it would be horribly uncomfortable to be wearing armor when the rain struck. Even his small collar could become soggy and uncomfortable when it was laden down with water. He imagined that armor would be all the more unpleasant to wear with wet fur beneath.

He was not adept with straps and latches, but he mouthed at them the best that he could. With Verity's guidance he was able to work his way from armor piece to armor piece, detaching them and trying to lay them carefully on the ground. A few slipped through his lips to clang noisily to the ground. He could feel the stares that Verity gave him whenever he let one fall, but he tried not to let that spook him. The armor was already dinged from use. A tumble to the grass wouldn't do it much harm.

It was clear that he hadn't handled armor before. Verity found it surprising that some angeni could be so far distant from the martial arts. She had grown in a herd of warriors and had a hard time imagining any other situation. She supposed it was nice that some could afford to live such pleasant and peaceful lives, though she considered those lives only possible by the sacrifices of others.

She grimaced when her helmet fell from his mouth onto the ground unceremoniously. Her armor was part of her being. It irked her to see it handled so carelessly. He was helping, but apparently had limited ability to do so.

Times like this made her wonder if she shouldn't find a raccoon or something to travel with her, something with nimble hands that might be trained to do these tasks for her.
