Deep in the woods...
On an old estate up in what used to be called the United States of America, the civilized world lays in ruins.
There is an old villa, hardly more than piles of rubble, that holds a secret more terrible and deadly than any in the decrepit world today.
It is the Landon estate,
once the home to one of the most powerful families in the country, if not the world. Over a million acres in diameter, it has escaped the ravages of an apocalyptic world.
There, the birds still sing sometimes and the woodland creatures are beginning to return. The grass is growing over and vines creep up stone walls like yearning fingers, but nature still reigns here.
But, in all its beauty, there is one spot in this oasis that is dead. One spot that is darkened with rot and mildew. A small basement door, fixed into the very ground, stares up into the empty trees above it, never to be disturbed.
And it must never be, as long as the world continues in its downward spiral. For there are few of us left now.
And the end is near.
But this tragedy has all flown by one woman.
Blind, she is the only semblance of humanity on the Landon estate and has remained so for a lost number of years.
She sleeps in the last standing wing of the villa, not bothered by the encroaching greenery. She eats with the squirrels and the rabbits, for she means them no harm.
She has never ventured out beyond her small circle and probably never would have.
