User ImageWell, damnit, if everyone was going to just up and leave--!

Epiphora was too busy for Cataracta, Cranium was off doing something silly for Retinadeath, Anopticyte was on the other side of the world, Tonestue had finally reached the "come near me and I'll bite your face off" stage of pregnancy, she hadn't been able to find Taranis all day...So yes, it was looking for a pretty dull day for the brightly-colored lyra. Cataracta liked having something to do. Being bored gave her an itch under her skin that would not go away. Which was why under the mumbled pretense of "checking for signs of hostile movement" or whatever, she had snuck out of the eastern border of Shadow territory, where the tangled, dark woodlands evened out into a more conventional one that could actually be navigated through without putting every feather out of alignment.

It was an excuse, really--an excuse to go do something different or see something different today. Maybe a time to hone her skills--such as the skill of tracking. There was another star in these woods. Technically, not a trespasser--this part of the woodland was too sparse to truly be Shadow territory. It smelled like a mare. Having never met someone from outside their herd before, the berserker found herself intrigued--who was that? What was she doing here? Hadn't she heard the legends? Okay, maybe they hadn't spread all that far, but...what did she hope to achieve out here?

Angerona was not going anywhere in particular. She no longer had a destination, not since her first one proved fruitless. Since she came from the male line, Ange had not grown up a Kuze and thus didn't take the surname. Nor did she have any desire to. Her grandfather had been one of those rare babies smuggled out before the leaders could dispose of him before he grew too big. She had heard all the stories. Had pressed her grandfather for information when she had been younger, curious about his side of the family. He was the oldest of her family while others her age had great, even many great, grandparents. At the time of the smuggling, he had not been old enough to fully understand what was going on. He had been raised by strangers in a herd far away from the danger, raised to grow bitter towards his mother's side. She would not have abandoned him if they hadn't had intentions of killing him. His own memories of the place were scarce, he had said, but he remembered her clearly. She had wanted her baby. The only one allowed to stay had been his sister.

When Ange had been old enough to take care of herself, she left the herd, saying she had wanted to see the world. Though this was true, it was only half the truth. The bonds of blood that bound the Kuze family was apparently strong enough to capture the interest of third generation Stars raised outside the shrine. She was unsure if she would be allowed inside despite her shared blood, but the curiosity had gotten the better of her. She needed to see these family members.

Unfortunately, it wasn't what she had expected. A darkness had laid across the shrine. It was quiet, like a cemetery. Run down. Shadows moved in the corner of your eyes and were gone when you looked directly at them. It was obvious something had gone wrong here. Her grandfather had said it was a lively place, though very structured in its customs and rituals. It should not have been that empty.

Not finding anyone except the shadows, Ange had left and wandered around, feeling a heaviness in her heart caused by all the unanswered questions stirring in her brain. Perhaps one day she would return. Or perhaps she could find other relatives, smuggled out male relatives, who might hold more recent information.

She found herself now in a wood, unaware she was close to a herd. The wind blew in the direction she was moving, bringing with it the smell of the trees, grass, and scattered critter that roamed the forest floor behind her.

The other mare in the woods smelled like a starborn--there was none of that scent of feathers or chitin about her. Luckily for Cataracta, the wind wasn't blowing her scent towards the other star; unfortunately, that was the closest she could come to sneaking up on her. Cataracta's brilliant coat was utterly useless for hiding unless her target was colorblind. Yet another advantage to being a berserker. She didn't have to hide. She could just charge around willy-nilly. Not that she was going to do that this time. She was curious, and curiosity demanded that she take a step closer. Take non-aggressive actions for once. It would be weird, but perhaps it would be good for her as well. With that decided, Cataracta made her way towards the scent, wings kept tucked against her body.

The stranger, as it turned out, was a slender mare, quite pretty and elegant. The markings, like bloody drops, were amazingly attractive; those bones, though, reminded Cat of Osteocyte and her brothers. Were they related somehow? Or was it just a coincidence. "Need any help?" she murmured. "Or are you just fine on your lonesome?" She leaned her own muscular body against a tree and watched for the other mare's reaction. If she ran, Cat would take flight--literally. She wanted to talk to someone, someone who wasn't out to get everyone else.
