He woke up in the middle of the night, staring up at the ceiling. His hand reached out slowly, feeling in the dark, and found the place beside him vacant. The sheets cold. His hand curled then, and he gritted his teeth.

In only a few more days, Rin's body would be gone. In a few more days, the physical part of her would be gone – and then he would be left waiting for her return.

His mind continued to cycle over and over and over on that day against Medea - the hell-b***h who tossed her power in all directions and landed an attack right through Rin's midsection. The Lifer had done nothing to the horsemen, yet she was punished for what she was. She was only defending, caring, and yet she was the one who had suffered. The horsemen who continued to take out more and more hunters by the moment, yet it was such a usual occurrence that no one cared anymore.

Did Medea even know who she destroyed? What were horsemen to her just as much as what were horsemen to him?

It didn't matter until you had a name and a face, a person you could bring up again and again. He gritted his teeth and got up. What were the hunters even doing now against Medea? That …THAT THING didn't deserve to even be alive!

Looking out through his broken window, he watched the sun barely rise and his eyes went to the looming lighthouse in the distance. He got up and went to get ready.

When morning came, he walked across the dew-touched training fields before entering the lighthouse. He climbed up the steps and waited. It had only been a few days since he was kicked out of the morgue, and that meant there still had to be missions to and from the Sahara. Cleanup. Investigation. Recovery. Recording of some nature. Something that left him up a chance.

He waited and kept his ears open.

It wasn't long before the first batch of Hunters arrived, a small motley collection of Death Hunters. Most of them looked grim, and all of them well-equipped, carrying just the right amount of equipment.

"Right," the leading Hunter of the group, a non-descript, mousey brown-haired woman, snapped her fingers at the least attentive of the group of four, "Since you know who just had to go put themselves on the line of fire and died that sort of really inconveniences us. We'll do her recovery duty, we'll get the samples they want and then we're out. Those follow up reports better be the most bland reports I have ever seen or god hel-" she paused. And then slowly, turned to Melvin. -"Are you going to leave or are you going to stay and get yourself and us in trouble, Melvin Wood?"

To hear his name from someone he didn't directly know was jarring, and he almost went to check if he wasn't wearing a name tag stitched to his jacket. But this was Death division, and their power was information. Information not just limited to their enemies but to other hunters, though he had to wonder why they would still know his name. He wasn't important, held any position of power, and hadn't caused any trouble (at least before the morgue) to put him on any red-alert listing.

Startled at first, he quickly remembered why he was here and tried to give an air of belonging and purpose. He just HAD to go through this portal.

"They told us in the Infirmary that they needed Life techs to help with several groups out into the Sahara. I was told to come here early in the morning to go on a mission." He didn't bring out his phone but instead pretended that he was just quickly rushed out, as some missions were, with very little information and just going off of barked orders. Seeing as he went on several missions that threw him into danger that way, he hoped that the Death Division group wouldn't question it. "I'd get more in trouble if I didn't go." He informed them, and glanced at the door as if he was just waiting for someone to pick him up before looking at the portals and then back at the Death group. "Are you the only group going?" If so, then he would lie and say it had to be them he was going with.

If anything, he was only helping by being another warm body between them and danger. He at least had his own charge in healing and could defend - somewhat. It hadn't really been something he could brag about now considering how quickly he got knocked out during the horsemen mission and then endangered Rin in the process.
